    When you consider how they went on to dominate the commercial airliner market, probably nearly impossible to quantify the value of the institutional knowledge Boeing acquired creating the B-29. Same can be said for several WW2 warplane manufacturers, but the B-29 in particular is just very directly adjacent to the requirements for a successful commercial airliner.

    • @truekisoka
      @truekisoka 15 днів тому

      well, the airliners following up to ww2 bombers were not really successful

    • @antikythera42

      Douglas and Lockheed dominated the post war airliner market. Only 50 of the Statocruiser (Development of the B29/B50 with the R4360's) were used in airliner service and weren't well liked due to poor reliability and high costs. Some did see success as the Guppy planes. B29's themselves only really saw military service with very limited civilian service as testbeds or mothership planes for test aircraft.

    I still think its crazy how the amount of money the US threw to develop the B-29 was WAY more than the money they threw to develop the A-Bomb.
    I mean, the B-29 has a pressurized interior, remotely-controlled guns, could fly higher than anything it went up against at the time . . . could fly farther too! The Superfortress was at the cutting edge of aircraft technology at the time. You know a design is good if the Soviets copy it too. I've seen FIFI fly over me while I was at the beach. I've seen the Enola Gay parked happily at Udvar Hazy. It's an absolutely gorgeous airplane.

Doesn't really work though and they risk collision with their own if they make it too complicated. High attack speed is the fighter's best tactic, but just a narrow window. then a long repeat positioning if you don't screw up.

    Just wondered... Why aren't the bombers up at the altitude where the enemy fighters were making their approach from? B-29s were supposed to be nearly unreachable by enemy fighters. "High and fast!"
    But this run looks like a B-17 run!

    • @Fishyyy
      @Fishyyy  16 днів тому +16

      The USAAF recorded a little over 11000 fighter attacks on B-29s. B-29s flying too high and too fast for japanese interceptors is a simple myth / misconception. Something someone at some point said and everybody else repeats. There is an image of a japanese twin engined fighter ramming a B-29. The Ki-84s shown in this video have very similar performance charachteristics to P-51Ds. You don't outspeed or outclimb those in any bomber. The B-29s are going at 60% throttle in these scenes. They had to fly ~2400km in order to get from the Marianas to Japan. 150 B-29s were lost to engine fires. It was wise to not gun the engines all the time. That's why I made the crew talk about their power settings. I tried to simulate the crews having to fly slower then they could. The higher you fly, the less accurate bombing becomes, too. Especially with the heavy winds over Japan. The B-29s still have a speed and altitude advantage over other bombers. The B-29s advantage is that it gets attacked less often, because the fighters need longer to catch up or overtake. A Ki-84 can execute way less attacks on a B-29, then it could on a B-17. The B-29s here still reached 500 km/h TAS, with 70% fuel and 20 500 pound bombs. That's a higher speed then a B-17 can reach at 1% fuel, with no armament carried at all.

    • @jameslanning8405
      @jameslanning8405 16 днів тому

      @@Fishyyy Well! I stand corrected!!
      And maybe it's simply the graphics of the video. that make the bombers look lower than they were.
      But the bombers wouldn't need to outclimb the fighters. They usually worked on that on the initial climb from takeoff to some point over the water, before reaching any initial waypoint for the bomb run.
      I guess by the time the B29s were hitting Japan, the Japs had designed fighters and interceptors, that could reach the bombers... But I always thought higher was better for the bombers.
      Here we see the fighters approaching the bombers from some thousands of feet higher than the bombers.
      That gave the fighters an advantage on the attack... It would be suicide for them to attack at bomber level!
      But... "Nuff said!"
      Have a great new year...

      @@Fishyyy How large can these scenarios get on modern computers? Probably can't do a true "thousand bomber raid" but it would be interesting to know just how many there can be.

    • @Fishyyy
      @Fishyyy  15 днів тому

      I'd say the upper limit is 200 - 250 aircraft at a time. The bottleneck there is CPU power. IL-2 1946 only uses one CPU core, which limits it to ~5GHz of computing power. Just in theory, if the game ever got multicore-support, 1000 bomber raids would be possible.
      You could always "spawn in" aircraft during missions. The theoretical limit of aircraft per mission is therefore gigantic. You can have a 200 aircraft RAF bombing raid and then have a 200 aircraft USAAF raid later in the same mission. Our own "Zonk mod" even adds functionality to spawn aircraft mid mission without causing loading lag spikes. With zonk mod, making a functioning 1000 bomber raid would be a matter of minutes, by the way. The list of things it currently adds is way too much to list here, but making a 240 bomber stream has become trivial. When we run really big missions, I am using a second PC to host with. It stares at the ground on super low graphics settings, so it can use a maximum of its computing power for the calculation of the objects. The player's client PCs don't have to calculate all of the AI processes and are therefore relatively less burdened.

    Is Ypack 1.2.3 somekind of Inside Joke?
    I find like 100 forum threads talking about it but no place where a download is provided...

      Yeah, it's a bit of a stupid situation. Make sure to use mediafire and to ignore mega:

    do they have the fire control system available?

    • @Fishyyy
      @Fishyyy  16 днів тому +1

      The B-29s fire control system isn't implemented in IL-2 1946. The B-29 isn't even flyable without mods. The gunners in this are (zonk mod improved) AI, which basically use aimbot. Guess it kinda looks the same on the receiving end, lol.

    Happy new year Fishy! When will zonk mod v1 be released?

    • @Fishyyy

      Thanks! It all depends on how busy DarkenedFantasies is. A few core features are still missing and we have trouble with some minor things. I'd say at least a few months.

    I keep trying to get the Ypack, have tried about 5 times now with different email addresses but I never get the registration email from Ypack host so I can download the mod. Any idea or help?

      I think the free modding page is broken at the moment. The ypack download links are available in our discord. Link to the server is in the description.

    Where are our little friends???

    • @Fishyyy
      @Fishyyy  12 днів тому

      Most B-29 missions weren't escorted. No fighter had the range to fly from the Marianas to Japan and back. Escorts became available only after Iwo Jima was captured, very late in the war. Since you are probably referring to P-51 Mustangs, here is a fun fact: Only a total of 9 B-29 missions were escorted by Mustangs.

    No AI slop voices next time in my opinion.

    • @Fishyyy
      @Fishyyy  16 днів тому +2

      Yeah. I don't think I'll be adding them anymore. Had to create 600 audio samples and invest a huge amount of effort overall. It's not something I can do on a regular basis anyway.

    Nice looking game, don’t see many sims on B29s. Really poor dialogue but otherwise looks like a good game

      What do you dislike about the dialogue?

    • @scarletkinkajou1
      @scarletkinkajou1 16 днів тому +1

      @ it’s just flat. The multiple mentions of how clear it is on CAVU conditions, the callouts stem randomized. It’s not totally horrible, but it just needs to be punched up and reduced in frequency. I’d still play the game but I’ve just heard better dialogue. Just my opinion.

    • @Fishyyy
      @Fishyyy  16 днів тому +3

      Fair enough. I was just interested in your opinion, cause i wrote the dialog and added it with AI. Well, never thought of myself as a writer and it was a first try. But believe me, it's way better then the game's radio callouts.
      Had to use good weather, because of technical limitations with Graphics Extender. Historically, the weather over Japan was basically always terrible. I don't think it would be unrealistic for B-29 crews to talk about the good weather.

      @ I thought it had an AI feel to it, dialogue wise. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a great effort and well executed, far better than I could have done.

    • @Fishyyy
      @Fishyyy  14 днів тому

      Yeah. I got it. Next time i'll either have silence or use the game's default terrible built in radio sounds. There is no way i spent this amount of effort again, just to receive this type of feedback.

    • @Hey-now
      @Hey-now 14 днів тому

      @@Fishyyy I liked the dialogue. I found it much better than the silence from the last video. I also liked the chatter from your friends in multiplayer even if it wasn't always specific to the time period. I always thought it was the kind of talk that these airmen would exchange on the long routine parts of the flight. I recognize the enormous amount of work to create the script, generate the AI voices, and then sync it up with the video. So thank you, Fishyyy, for creating a video that at least some of us really appreciated.

    • @Fishyyy
      @Fishyyy  14 днів тому

      Thank you. Unfortunately, I don't have people to record with at the moment. I personally also really enjoy having the multiplayer voice recordings, but it seems like the algorithm doesn't like them. All of my really popular IL-2 videos don't have our voices in them. I guess our modern gamer conversations don't match the ww2 themed videos. Not sure about what to do, yet.

    HSFX7 B-29 cockpit has more details than this ;-)

  • @matydrum
    @matydrum 15 днів тому

    That's not very ultimate. The analog computer sights looked nothing like this. And you'd have to put and maintain the enemy plane in a bracket and the computer would adjust for lead and bullet drop.

    • @Fishyyy
      @Fishyyy  15 днів тому +4

      You are criticizing something I have no control over. This is the best, which can be done il IL-2 1946 at the moment. Therefore it is ultimate. The gunners in this are AI and use aimbot. They precompute lead and everything just like the sight would.

    • @matydrum
      @matydrum 15 днів тому

      @Fishyyy you did good. As you say you have no control over it. But call it ultimate? It's the only sim with controllable b-29, so that's like saying I won the race when coming back from jogging alone. That plus those very inaccurate turrets images... But the rest is very good. But don't mind me, I'm just an old picky WW2 aviation nerd.
