    Hi Gerald, good stuff. Txs for that.
    For the lunchbox it should be mentioned that it does not fit with the Atomos Connect Module for two reasons
    a.) it is too thick
    b.) you would have to unscrew the Atomos Connect Module if you want to change drives (the lunchbox is simply too short).

    YOu dont need write speed if you are downloading footage from SSD to your computer, isnt it? You just need read speed. Write speed u using during your camera/recorder records on it, and there is no usage of launch box reader.

    Sorry, i notice a misunderstanding in this video, The Andycine may have faster write speed, but this will not be much used, because the writing takes place with the Ninja V,
    On top of that, the Atomos manual says also not to delete any files from the SSD with a computer
    So the cheap WaveLink SATA reader, is a better choice, faster in reading, that's all it has to do.

    • @noth606
      @noth606 11 місяців тому

      He was just comparing them when connected to PC because a lot of people edit directly on the media they record onto in the Ninja, instead of first copying the footage to the PC. Write speed matters for editing as you'll know.
      Atomos manuals can say what they like about deleting, it doesn't mean much. As for readers etc the Atomos ones aren't good, never were good, and I seriously doubt anyone uses them except if they have nothing else... I have the Atomos one but have never even plugged it in, I have a generic Sata -> USB thing instead.

    Awesome setup - Ive been using the Ninja V for less than a month now - However looking at the prices of the SATA drives I searched around and found your video on how to use the Andycine Lunchbox - which saved me hundreds of pounds in money as I built two Andycine drives for the Ninja V - Thank you so much for that - I am now interested in that Andycine power supply you showed in your video - How long would that power the Ninja V for? And are there any other portable powering solutions for the Ninja V?

    • @GeraldBertramPhotography
      @GeraldBertramPhotography  2 роки тому +1

      Glad I was helpful! So the NInja V will typically draw 10W while occasionally going up to near 20W. On the 95wh AndyCine battery you should be good at close to 3 hours shooting 4k 60fps. I'm not aware of other portable power solutions that would be this cost effective and wouldn't overly weigh down your rig.

    How do you use the Ninja V with the FX3? Do you record ProRes or ProRes Raw? I'd love to check out ProRes Raw with the a7SIII, but since it's not supported in Resolve, I'm not what the point would be (color tools in FCP are so limited without additional plugins, IMO).
    Nice setup. I like the Andycine Lunchbox. That's a cool little device

    • @GeraldBertramPhotography
      @GeraldBertramPhotography  2 роки тому +2

      So with the FX3 and I assume the A7S3 you can record in 12bit ProRes Raw up to 4.2k 60p which is what I do when I'm trying to squeeze out every bit of the image quality I can. You can also record in regular ProRes & DNx at all the resolutions and frame rates the camera supports. If you buy the addon you can also record in h265. I just really like recording to the little SSD vs memory cards. I can edit directly off the SSD when I hook it up to the computer or just transfer the files off of it a lot faster than I can with the SD cards. The lack of support for ProRes RAW is pretty much the last thing holding me up from switching to Resolve. Fingers crossed they work that out with Apple some day!

    • @willmannering
      @willmannering 2 роки тому

      @@GeraldBertramPhotography Resolve is hands down the way to go, don't wait! It really takes your color grading skills to the next level. For me I'm still getting used to the editing functions of Resolve in order to fully switch over. But working with color it is an absolute game changer. Spoiler alert I doubt they will ever have ProRes Raw support since it clashes with their own products. What you can do is transcode Raw to 4444 XQ, file sizes go up but you retain 12 bit color and smooth editing. If the production is high budget and demands Raw and 12 bit color in post production than you can easily justify the increase in file size.

      I just got my Andycine reader and wanted to ask if you experienced issues or inconsistencies in reading the lunchbox? I have two lunchboxes, one with a Samsung T5 and the other with a generic Leven drive, both 1TB. But only 1 out of 10 attempts to read the drive on my MacBook is successful. I have various usb c cables and the only one that gave a 50/50 success rate on both, is my MacBook usb c cable. Nor even my Angelbird usb c drive cable worked consistently. Yet my generic Startech mSATA reader cable works flawlessly on both drives. A friend believes I need a Thunderbolt usb c for this reader. Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again.

      @@GeraldBertramPhotography Hi Gerald..Ok..so update for information.....a film colleague and tried different tests between last night and this morning to figure this out and with same results. Then we observed two things..the sata connector on the lunchbox reader had some wiggle play which I assumed as normal so we decided to open it up and saw thar the controller card sits in the casing similarly to the contollers and drive in the lunchboxes themselves, except with a point something mm of headroom space. So I decided to use strips of leftover heat sink tape from the lunchbox and sandwhiched the controller card between them and closed it back up (making sure the msata connector was close to or maxed out to the exit as possible). Nice tight fit with no wiggle. Eureka, all cables and all drives work. The connector on the lunchbox reader is actually half the length protruding compared to the generic Startech cable which means the connectors were not making full connection. lesson learnt. Also, when putting together the samsung T5 drive into the casing, it's actually a few micro inches deeper than my generic drive which also contributed to the connection not being fully realized. So just sharing, but I will still invest in a thunderbolt cable.

    Hey thanks for the information. Question. Does it matter what year ninja v someone has? I seen one for sale and it had a 1920x1200 resolution… but others have 1920x1080. And new to this and I want to purchase one but not sure about certain specs. Will a firmware update change the resolution from old to new? Or should I just buy a newer model?

    • @GeraldBertramPhotography
      @GeraldBertramPhotography  2 роки тому +2

      As far as I am aware the newer NInja V+ is the same dimensions as the original Ninja V. That being said this video was done with the original Ninja V so just keep that in mind as far as stuff like the cage goes. All the other accessories would work just fine with either version. The only reason to spend the extra money to get the newer Ninja V+ is if you are wanting to record things like 4k120p on the monitor or higher resolutions like 8K. Now obviously you would need a camera with those higher specs like the Canon R5 for 8K. For my FX3 the original Ninja V is perfect when I want to record 4k 60fps ProRes RAW. So if you tell me what camera you have and the kinds of things you shoot I can give you a better recommendation. Thanks again for watching!

      So you could use the Ninja V just as a monitor and do all the recording in your camera on a SD card. However most people get this monitor because it can record the HDMI signal out of your camera often with much better codec than your camera has. For example on the FX3 you can record RAW video with the NInja V and you cannot record RAW in your camera on a SD card. So when recording with the Ninja V you need a SSD in the monitor for it to record with.

    what does a t5 SSD translate to in terms of recording time for 4k?

    • @GeraldBertramPhotography
      @GeraldBertramPhotography  2 роки тому

      So it all depends on the bitrates of the codecs you use. So for example ProRes 422 at 4k 24fps is about 471Mbps which equates to around 211gb per hour. So you’d get a bit over 4 hours on the 1tb drive. If you went 4k24fps at ProRes HQ you’d only get about around 3 hours. If you were shooting ProRes HQ at 4k60fps you’d get a little over an hour because of the higher bitrate. That’s assuming my math is right!
