- In this episode. We are going to look at hanging two hammocks, side by side on the same set of trees. Not only am I going to show you how this is done. But some of the reasons or situations to why you would want to use this method or system. What are the pro's and con's. Ans what gear you will to achieve the ultimate side by side hang.
I made spreader bars from 3/4" PVC with T fittings. I run the suspension through the T fittings. It works fairly well, not too heavy, and only cost a couple bucks.

Great video Marine! I have the Beatle buckle suspension for two reasons. First it’s easy and second because of the option of using the spreader bar in the event I would need to do a tandem hang because of lack of trees, etc. but I’ve never had to yet. I think that would be the main reason for using that option because with both set up that way when one moves the other will be disturbed at night. But it’s good to have it if you need it. Thanks for sharing this! 👍
Who ever hangs next to me. Will not be able to sleep in the beginning. And when I get up in the middle of the night. They are going to experience a elevator ride. When do you think you will be on the trail again?
@@AdventureswiththeMarine I bet. I saw your grandson go pretty high when you got in. Lol. I did a bunch of trips in June so I have two more from then as far as videos coming up. Black Forest trail and the Loyalsock trail. Two of my favorites. I was hoping to be back out on trail by mid to late August when my wife recovers where she can drive, etc. but late last week she took a down turn and has been the hospital again. Not sure what’s wrong yet. Suspect some kind of infection that they have slowly been battling. She’ll be here for a while longer until it gets under control. But I’m sure she will overcome it continue with her recovery.

Thanks Marine. I am going up to Emily, MN for Labor Day with my granddaughter and I got her a 9' netted hammock. I will have my Chameleon. Not sure I can line them up, but since you mentioned the movement I may have to find 3 trees spaced well. That will keep her close and I will be comfortable.
Three trees would be best. That is so cool that you are taking your granddaughter. She will remember that trip for the rest of her life. It is amazing how Grandfathers can change the world. Have a great trip.

Hey Marine - another great video. I watched it closed caption so don't know if you slipped in that if the spreader bar suggests sea sickness (or murder) to the other person, it can be left out and just look for two larger diameter trees. Or maybe there are three trees so run the head end of both hammocks off the largest one and run the foot end to the other two.
For that wide tarp, look at Dutchware Two Person Tarp.

I am thinking about doing a tandem hammock with my friend for our BWCA trip and do you think that the 12 foot hammock gear journey would be enough coverage?
Yes, absolutely. That is a very nice tarp. Well made. You guys have a great time. Hopefully the bugs will be thinned out by then.

i wonder if someone clever could design some sort of "caps" to fit over a walking pole as an alternative spreader bar? it would save weight seeing as you`re likely to be carrying one anyway
I know someone makes them. But I don't recall who that was. I have the carbon spreader bars that weigh a couple of ounces. But you are right. You can save weight and space if you can convert the hiking poles. Thank you waynus for watching.
Always love your videos! I have a question for you about a specific hammock hang. Wondering if you can give me some advice. I have a double wide gathered end hammock and for a specific situation I need to remove the continuous loops from the ends and run a carabiner through the end channels of the hammock and then attach to a tree strap. Is there any reason why running a carabiner through the end channels is a bad idea? We have researched other solutions for this particular problem and this seems to be the only one. It is because we are using a hammock stand, and with the continuous loops attached the hammock is too long for the stand. removing the loops and replacing them with a carabiner solves the problem, but I am concerned if this is a safe idea. I also need a large enough carabiner to handle the mass of gathered fabric (double wide hammock) and the weight load. Any recommendations? Thanks for your time and expertise :)
You can use a large heavy duty carabiner. There are some hammocks that come with them attached. The reason why they are not popular is because of the weight. But in your case, they would work just fine. Another option is to replace the continuous loop with shorter ones. That way you can keep the weight down if you want to carry it. You can get them in length of 3",4",6", 8"...

It is not ideal to use the carabiner straight to the tree, as it receives lateral push and might bend. I mean. You are not climbing… but as a climber it hurts to see the carabiner used like that…

I'm not a climber, but I'm sure there won't be any problem with the carabiner. People use this straps with ultralight titanium hooks from Dutchware (they are much weaker than the carabiners). But I have a question. What would you suggest to use with the tree straps for a hammock used by kids to swing? I want it to be really safe.
The use of carabineers with the straps is common and has been discussed on forums and videos by other hammockers. The position, as shown by the Marine, is such that it takes minimal bending load.
I personally use what is called the Phantom Grappler Shackle, a type of soft shackle.
