    Hey Marine Mike over in Wisconsin You have helped me most in my journey in hammock camping. Plus I ve been to many of the same places you have on my adventures. Small world. I wanted to tell you about my underquilt protector. I took a US poncho liner and opened the ends - pushed some shock cord through and wha - la. It might be considered a little warm at times but I like to fail having too much gear on the warm side. A plus, if its to warm to the bottom quilt it makes me a great top quilt - thanks for being a great teacher and keeper of the safe way to take outdoor adventure.

    Watched while making kombucha :) Great information, thank you so much! We used to sleep in a hammock in our barn. Now knowing about the angle sleeping and underquilts it will be so much more comfortable and warm. We're a big family in Northern Alberta and we're on a bit of a hammock craze right now. Our brother made a hammock using fence and strung it up with a bunch of twine in the barn! Works awesome, but not ideal for back packing - lol! Like a floating spring bed. One of our sisters made a hammock using canvas and sewed alpaca hides (from our alpacas) to the bottom as her underquilt and did that ever keep her warm. Really appreciate the quality information you share with your viewers. Thumbs up and a new subscriber!

    So if you use the under quilt protector how do you access and adjust the under quilt for covering your body?

    • @AdventureswiththeMarine
      @AdventureswiththeMarine  2 роки тому +1

      When I use an under quilt protector. They can be adjusted on the sides. I will adjust it just a little over the under quilt. This way when I adjust my under quilt. I just slide my fingers inside the under quilt protector. And the under quilt is right there. It is not for covering you body. It is to cover the under quilt. To protect it from moister and the wind. They really work well in the wind. It you happen to have any gaps in the under quilt. The protector will block that cold wind. Thank you Ed for watching. I really appreciate it.

    If I only has a budget for 1 underquilt, top quilt combo, but want to be able to use it year round what would you recommend? I horse camp, backpack camp, and car camp, so weight isn't a top concern, but it is something I look at for the backpack trips. I have been looking at the hammock gear economy line. I am just unsure of what temperature rating to go with. My thought process was leaning towards getting a 10° underquilt, and a 30° top quilt. With the thought that the underquilt can be adjusted to allow airflow in the summer, and snugged up in the winter. If it is lower than 30° I will have more layers of clothes to keep on if necessary. Then I can add a 40° underquilt later to cut weight when the budget allows.

    • @AdventureswiththeMarine
      @AdventureswiththeMarine  2 роки тому

      I have the 3 Hammock Gear Phoenix and also their top quilts, but in goose down. I think that you have it perfectly figured out. That is exactly what I would do. The most important way to stay warm is underneath. With that 10° under quilt. with temps in the 20's Because heat rises. That 30° top quilt will be good enough to keep you warm. If not. Just put on a light jacket and you are good to go. Thank you B Lowe for watching. I really appreciate it.

    I would like to update you on my progress, I have had some very nice naps in backyard. Fall is here in the black swamp finally so with nighttime temps between 45 to 60 do you think a diy poncho liner under quilt would work? A couple of grommets and some shock cord and it should work . My plan is do it on the diagonal with a grommet on ends with shock cord and the a cord on bottom with a double/triple layer overlap in middle that is concept . I seen a plan using one rectangle like but I am 6’5 so I’m thinking long ways with core area doubled up should be great . What do you think worth a try ?

    • @AdventureswiththeMarine
      @AdventureswiththeMarine  3 роки тому +1

      I believe if you adjust the poncho liner just right. It will definitely work. I always wanted to try doing that. But I like to use mine ( now forty years old ) as a light blanket instead of a sleeping bag or a top quilt during the warm summer months. I like the way you are thinking. Always improvise. Semper fi

So now time to do it right with the poncho liner and right now they are in sale for like 22 bucks at sportmans guide for a real one tie strings or not with the grommets it should be good and still can use with a poncho as a recon roll if needed . When experimenting in my back yard (I only have a neighbor on one side) trying to build confidence for subzero temps I heated up rocks in the "camp" fire threw the coals down below the hammock and then the rocks on top of them. No snow yet so I covered them with a thin layer of dirt idk what the temps were I'm guessing 30's but the rocks were still slightly warm by morning. Wish I had some of your gear :^) I really want to go subzero! scared I won't have my wits about me and wake up with frost bite or a popsicle. I want to make my own because I'm ultra picky about what goes into my bag and spending large chunks of change.

      One way is to make your own under quilt, if you are creative and know how to sew, or know someone that can sew. If you have any thrift stores around. Or if you can find a good used sleeping bag that you can purchase ( which can be very inexpensive ). You take the material. Cut and sew and create a under quilt. I know of a few people that have done that with great success. Keep on improvising J Cronk.

      I have used some Velcro sticky back tabs to attach a cheap costco down blanket or similar Double Black Diamond Packable Down Throw - Ultra Light 60 Inch X 70 Inch, Stuff Sack Included (Navy Blue) by Double Black Diamond www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B018FBBS9W/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_bk33Bb4GNQJHC to provide some trapped air 'loft'. Put some brass eyelets in around the edges and some shock cord. Works fine down below freezing if i use my tarp as an effective wind break. Pitching the tarp so the ends cross over to close the head and tail end traps a bit of warm air. Might add some snappers to reduce the fiddle factor.

    To cut down on how much the mat shifts during sleep, would it help if I just slide the sleep mat inside the sleeping bag?

    • @AdventureswiththeMarine
      @AdventureswiththeMarine  6 років тому +1

      The mat will shift a little during the night. You want to try to get the widest one you can find. If you put the mat in the sleeping bag. You will get condensation inside the bag. You will have to air out to dry. If you are staying in one spot and have all day to hang it up before you get back in it. You will be fine. If you are hiking and staying at a different camp everyday. Then that can be a problem.

    Your videos are great! What about weight are hammocks heavier than tents? So complicated to set up also. .

    • @AdventureswiththeMarine
      @AdventureswiththeMarine  4 роки тому +1

      In most cases. The hammock setup is lighter than the tent. I have a hammock with a tarp and a under quilt that weighs under 3lbs. ( 35oz. or 992 grams ).
      There is definitely a learning curve to hammock camping. But if you are creative. That's a good thing. You will be able to handle most situations.

    I'm curious if you could say more about ridgelines? I saw some in Episode 1, but of all the parts of an 'ultimate hang' kit, the ridgeline is the part that never comes to mind when visualizing the setup. Can you just use any rope? Is it really as simple as tying (or looping through) to the gathered ends?

    • @AdventureswiththeMarine
      @AdventureswiththeMarine  6 років тому

      I really like to use amsteel. You can get it at Dutchware Gear ( www.dutchwaregear.com ). Dutch also sells ridgelines. They are that simple to attach and very effective. You want it 83 percent of the length of your hammock. ( a 11 foot hammock would be 110 inches and a 10 footer would be 100 inches ) When you set it up. You will have almost the same sag every time. And if you have to go lower then a 30 degree hang ( because the trees are farther apart ). It will take the added pressure off the hammock. And it is great to hang things on it. Plus, if you want to add a bug net. It will hold it away from you.

    • @gregu4791
      @gregu4791 6 років тому

      Thank you so much! How does amsteel compare to paracord? It looks like some sort of synthetic. What makes it special? Thanks again!

    • @AdventureswiththeMarine
      @AdventureswiththeMarine  6 років тому

      Amsteel is lighter and a lot stronger. great stuff.

    • @arweninnj
      @arweninnj 5 років тому

      @@gregu4791 Paracord absorbs water when wet, is heavier and stretches. Amsteel and Zing-it/Lash-it don't. Much greater break strength over paracord. You can splice loops in Amsteel so you don't need to use knots- can't do that with paracord.

      @AdventureswiththeMarine  6 років тому +1

      With out testing it. I can only give you my opinion. Everybody is trying to come up with a new cool design. In some cases. They look cool. But they do not function very well in certain conditions. First, because of the spreader bars on the ends and its design. It has a higher center of gravity which makes it Tippy and hard to achieve a flat lie in it. The air mattress will help. But you would be only able to, maybe get down to the mid 50s ( 13 Celsius ). It would be fine for car camping because it is heavy and bulky. Because of the design of the rain fly around the hammock. It provides little, if any ventilation. Which can make it hot and humid and cause condensation. Plus the more seams in the tarp. The more chances for it to leak. I don't mean to nit pick. I just want to be honest with you. I hope this was helpful.

      I am starting to shoot video tomorrow on tarps. A two parts. 1. Styles, material and what size that would work best for you. 2. Some of the ways to set-up and pitch a tarp. Part one will be out a week from Thursday. And part two the week after. I am planning to do a lot of tutorials in the next couple of months. Thank you Kris Sawle for watching them. I really appreciate it.

      Trout Whisperer, it's been really crazy. I did two trips that I have to edit. Next week I am hoping to shoot a video on tarps. I have in-laws coming out for 10 days. Since I have been gone, my wife had a list for things that need to be done. Crazy, but good stuff.
