I'm not generally a "one-size-fits-all" kind of person when it comes to anything. But one thing I believe every woman is underestimating is the power of capturing every task, list item & idea as it comes to mind. This has been a powerful change in my life and I feel so much less stressed & anxious...you might want to give it a shot!

Hello Dawn, thanks! It is as usually a very thoughtful video. - Is the app for free? someone wrote in the playstore review it is for 4 dollars/euros a month. Is that true? Maybe former versions? On the website they advertise it as free for android and iOS. I am not sure. I do not like
subscriptions that regularly cost me something. You then lose track of them and may never deregister them. So I am careful what I am installing on my phone. Thanks a bunch for helping me out to start with-

What I have realized with age is that I will never be done with my today list. I used to feel anxious feeling like I was behind because I had so much to do and thought I should be able to do it and be done. That’s not possible. I feel much more relaxed now that I have realized this.

My today list only has tasks that if I don't accomplish today, it would ruin my life lol. So the urgency is motivation enough to complete a very short list. Then I go into my future list and accomplish some of those tasks, and it feels WAY better that way.

    *TIPS FOR NON-DIGITAL ORGANIZERS*
Great point about capturing everything! I just wanted to mention that for those of us that don't do well with the digital way, there are small dry erase boards you can get that stick on a wall or any surface with velcro. So if you're in the bathroom, you can jot down what you're thinking of in the moment, then take the board (when you have time) to your main list and transfer the items. Yep, it may look weird to guests, but you have to do what works in your life! (I actually just thought of an idea! If company is coming and you're embarrassed about your bathroom list, take if off the velcro, hide it away, and replace it with a lightweight little picture you've affixed velcro to!) These boards can be put anywhere and everywhere you need them!
Your MAIN TASK LIST can be a bigger board of some kind in your CENTRAL organizing area with each to do, grocery item, etc. on INDIVIDUAL STICKY NOTES (they make sticky notes in an abundance of sizes and colors!). These sticky notes can be physically moved around much like Dawn did digitally on her computer! Put important items on brighter colored and/or bigger sticky notes. Have the days of the week across the top and your other main headings could be Special/individual Projects, Grocery List(s), Work Stuff... whatever you want across the lower half.
I have ADHD, which means I have severe executive function difficulties, motivation problems and memory issues, and a thought can literally go out of my brain in a fraction of a second and be replaced with another thought, plus I'm a VERY visual person. I find I need to WRITE a thought immediately (the very act of writing, rather than typing, helps me to remember it also!) or it may be gone indefinitely, EVEN IF IT'S IMPORTANT. The ACT of opening an app on a phone and having to type or getting into a computer is enough of a barrier to me that I will forget what I needed to type or won't take the time to actually do. Like Dawn emphasized, capturing the thought is HUGE! I am also a very "out of sight, out of mind" person, so I HAVE to have things where I can see them... the more in my face, the better! Just having them on an app on my phone does not work for me, because I have to open the app and it's not consistantly in my face enough. Might sound weird to some, but that's what works for my brain! You have to realize your barriers and work with your brain to overcome them. Good luck everyone!!

    • @korriefisher4545
      @korriefisher4545 11 місяців тому +7

I have ADHD too and most of what you said is 100% the same for me! Out of sight out of mind (sadly for me this includes people sometimes so I have to task calls and check ins too). I have to keep a paper planner and paper to do lists, but I do send myself messages all day long about things to do and once a day or every few days I add them to my master list. When I was in management at a previous job I had to use my sticky notes to prioritize my day/week and would move the tasks around as needed if a meeting went late or something like that.

Having lists like this really help me prioritize what actually matters. I try to look at my lists and then think about what is actually very important in this moment- it really helps me with intentionality. I realize things like: I need to spend time with my son or intentionally hug my kids more often. I can clearly see where I have space to make sure we are playing family games and taking vacations together. I think these systems can actually really help you be intentional as a mom, wife, friend, etc.

@@candicemast4209 - absolutely. And this is where reframing helps because, for example, I've got a task of going through a lot of old papers and materials for projects. I can think of it exactly like that. Or, I can think about how happy my husband will be when that space is clear. I can think about the joy of being able to demonstrate success for my child to be inspired by and encouraged by. I can think of the anticipation of inviting others into that space to teach them a little something about sewing when they've asked to learn about it. These things are ministry to others. Not just to me. It's part of my bigger purpose of being on earth at this time and in these circumstances😊. i'm here to show the love of Christ to others, and sometimes that means leaving my to do list behind to go help others with their to do list, to visit, to cheer up, etc. I definitely benefit from having organized list that can be Easily updated to accommodate unexpected challenges during projects, or to remind me of the one teeny tiny thing that I need to do to move things forward even though I don't have time to do much on any given project.
Our paper and/or digital organization should serve the greater good that we are here for. 😇 ❤!

I mostly love laundry because when I'm doing it I can either think about nothing at all or ponder interesting things or watch a little television so it's like a break. I do a little bit on most days, and it's like a little treat most of the time unless I have to put extra effort into stains. I also pre-sort my laundry as it comes off of me and I trained my husband to do the same thing. I literally have a basket called "tumble and ignore." That's for stuff that gets washed on hot, then goes into the dryer and I don't have to worry about it wrinkling. Other loads usually involve hanging things immediately or partial drying things on cold air and then hanging them up, or just drawing things and being right there to catch them Before they wrinkle. I know that when I'm doing towels or my "tumble and ignore" loads that I'm going to have a TV treat! 😂

I usually find Dawn's videos so peaceful... this had a different feel to it. Our culture tells us we have to live at such a frantic pace. If a paper To Do list doesn't cut it anymore, it probably means we're doing too much. The world doesn't stop spinning if we don't capture Every. Single. Thought. that comes into our heads. It's OK to let some of them go! I know Dawn mentioned "task inventory," but the video still felt like a departure from her usual message of simple living - more like a tutorial on how to organize all your clutter instead of releasing it. Set yourself free from the pressure to be perfect and keep all the balls in the air! We're all juggling too much. Yes, I have a To Do list. But I'm gracious with myself and my limits. My body and brain weren't designed to handle a constant barrage of ideas, tasks, and pressures. Take a deep breath and know that you are enough, even if you sometimes forget an Amazon return.

As a minimalist, we still have things that we consider important to us and we still need to prioritize those special and important things. To see your ideas on paper, you can study the ideas and wonder if it’s necessary/actionable/appropriate or if you should declutter it.

Just a quick tip- those shower curtain liners- toss them into the washing machine with bleach. I promise they come out fine. I actually throw the liner and cotton curtain (I always choose white for this reason) in together, with the plastic clips still attached like a maniac. Every once in a while, a clip breaks. I should swap for the hook style. But I just keep an extra roll of clips. It is just easier for me as a short person, lol

I use the container method for my to do list. If there are too many things to manage on paper, then I let go of some of the things.

Love the idea of that to-do app but for me if a task isn't in my Digital calendar then it doesn't get done. So I use Google tasks which integrates with my calender. It also helps me say "Not Today" to more tasks because I can see what I actually have time for. Thanks for another great video!

I have felt completely overwhelmed lately. I accomplish so much, but panic about not getting it all done or not remembering it in a timely manner. I am using a paper planner as well as the notes app on my phone to jot down (capture) things as I think about them. Most importantly I have recognized that I cannot do it all so some of the tasks get outsourced so a project becomes a phone call to someone to do the project, or I prioritize it so that I am only focusing on the most important things that day/week/month, but not forgetting projects for the future. I also TAKE THINGS OFF THE LIST! Some projects just aren’t worth my time and effort. Most importantly, I am making sure I schedule time for my want to do’s with my have to do’s. If I am just trudging through a to do list from one end of the day to the other I am not enjoying life.

This has probably been your most helpful video for me. I already declutter and own less as that is my personality, but the mental clutter and organization is what I really struggle with. Please do another video that shows what categories you have and how to keep all the mental clutter organized :)

Yes, I really like thinking about this as mental inventory. Many parallels with what you've taught us about managing physical inventory...

I've always loved pen and paper, but I will say, with how busy my life gets with three little ones, I've been known to have multiple "to-do lists" in my notebook...and I always end up going back to my phone to-do list, because it's easier to keep up with. 😊 I love pen and paper, but sometimes it isn't as practical when you're super busy all the time and can't always go back to the paper to write stuff down/mark stuff off.

Dawn -this has been my problem for so long - everything flying around and not capturing it. So many times I do the brain dump and then have a huge melt down trying to prioritize. I’m going to give a try - I’m hopeful!! ❤❤❤

  • @laurenkate7162

I’m not sure if it was mentioned, but sometimes it is also ok to not capture everything and let some things go! Or remove them from your to do list it if they’ve been sitting there for a while.
I know Dawn talks a lot about the amount of inventory you can manage in the season of life you are in, and thoughts/to do inventory is no different! I have a habit or capturing too much and it results in too much anxiety and overwhelm as I just don’t have the time to complete it all as a sahm of a toddler. I thought it was better than having it all floating around in my head but turns out if I still write down the most important things then it actually feels better to have the less important things not captured. If I write every single thing down, it makes me even more aware of it and makes me feel like a failure because I just don’t have the capacity to complete as many tasks in this season of life!

Thanks for the tip on digital notes! I looked on my phone and apparently already had an app called 'reminders'. It works perfectly for my grocery or to-do lists. Bye bye post-its!

If you use an iphone, their Notes sll allows you to create color-coded, bullet point lisrs with sub-items. For recurring tasks, you set them to bd crossed off but not deleted. Yes, you van set reminders for time-sensitive items! Its not perfect, my task lists is jumbled with other notes (recipes, QR codes for mailing irems, etc.) I need to weed it out ecery so often, but its a really good tool.

I like the idea of capturing to get something to stop rattling around my brain, like in a pinball machine that won't stop - do this, do that, I am almost out of whatever, I almost forgot whatever, and I have used the "brain dump" concept advised by Dawn to help with that, or just write it on a scrap of paper if I don't want to find that list. But also, for this stage of my de-cluttering, I really need to hesitate a little before capturing. I agree with a comment below that it makes life too worrisome and frenetic, and I don't want to accumulate volumes of captured ideas and then have to sort those. It is essential for me to have some early discernment or I start to mingle in "to dos" that I would only have time for if I had 50 hours each day and much longer to live than I actually have - and I start to think I am supposed to or need to do all that and then I don't like my life. So for me I need and sometimes use a "to do maybe" and a "to do, maybe never", and when I stop to think in those terms, I actually feel good to realize that many things I do not have to do ever. That brings a sort of satisfaction much like getting new space in my closet, and for a hoarder that feels really good. Also, I sometimes run across an old unfinished list and lots of the "to dos" have turned into "hell nos" or at least "what was I thinking" or "no way because it would take hours or years." Like the wardrobe ideas, I guess we have to find what works for us, but I know one thing and that I have been a follower of Dawn for years and my life is incredibly better because of her. There is time for peace, which there wasn't before.

I like the idea of creating your own categories. The way you prioritize tasks depends on what matters most to you, which can change from season to season.

Very helpful tips to capture, organize and prioritize. I started a clumsy version of this about a year ago but now I think this helped me find a more efficient and visually easy way to manage the many tasks. I used to get so overwhelmed to the point of depression. You’re right that listing it took away a great deal of stress. Like many people here have said I was feeling depressed about all the things I had to do until I realized that I was pressurizing these tasks and I never put myself in there. If I did do something “fun” I was constantly downing myself or preoccupied with the things on my list I wasn’t getting done. I NEED to prioritize time and fun activities with my family. So often I felt that I wasn’t allowed to enjoy free time because “look at my to do list!”. Work first, play when it’s done. But the list just grows and grows daily so that is not sustainable and it had me seriously burnt out! So now I put family time and me time specifically on my to do list. It has helped tremendously. I don’t get things completed at the rate I used to, but my mental health is no longer suffering like it used to. I don’t get sick as much from over extending myself to work on tasks. I have a more realistic expectation of what I can get done and some things even came off the lists because they will likely never get done and it’s not worth stressing over. Kind of like a time will tell but for a to-do task.

The app you shared is pretty brilliant. I've tried everything and paper does NOT work for me. Electronic is always better for me but most apps are needlessly complicated. With the customization of the lists, the calendar and the tabs plus the recurring tasks...this little app is simply elegant. I'm trying it now and I think it may work really well for me. Thank you for sharing it!
