      Hi Brooklyn, I have been learning aquaponics tech for about a year now from you, murray's, robs backyards and affnan's. You guys are great! As for now i have been working on medium commercial aquaponics farm designs and somehow i have not come to a conclusion. Since i am about to finalized my design 'The Aquarius S' (S for 'S'tarter :p) How can i share my design to you for your comments and workaround. I am from architecture education background but being a CG artist and director for animation production studio for the last 12 years.

      Thank you so much for these valuable information. What I want to ask is: Is tilapia grow rate in this system is the same as in nature?6 months to get 450 grams,does it take the same period in nature?

    One thing that would enhance this episode would be links in the description to the plans or details of the UVI system referenced in the commentary. Thinking about it, having a critical breakdown of a known working system in a seperate article might be as educational as your excellent plan reviews. Keep up the great work!

      Hey Peter,
      I'm not sure where a descriptive link for the UVI system is available online as we receive our references from purchased books. You may be able to do a quick youtube search to see if there are videos. Also, the majority of commercial aquaponic farms use the UVI setup, so it might be helpful to look some one those up.

    with this setup that you recommend left out allot of the very important information. One, don't do aquaponic system for a commercial use due the labor cost as the lack of profit with the fish of choice. Two, this system will be acting like a Hydroponic system due to fact that it has no Bacterial Surface Area for the money maker microbials. You have to have the microbials to produce quality plants and to get rid of the NH3 and/or NH4+. Three, vertical tower are far Superior to those deep water cultures. You can grow 4 time as much food in the same space with the same labor and that equals to a larger profit margin.

    I am unclear about the math. Is it possible to provide numbers starting from tank capacity, like 5000lt, how much can be grown and what is bed size allowed for 5000 ltr capacity.
    Or can be made more simpler like, 100gal tank, what are the other specifications needed for remaining dependent/required items. Thank you very much all the information you being providing.

    Hello! Before jumping into this business, I have decided to spend more time on understanding how things work. Pretty sure the build of any sort won't take that much time but it's one mistake one goal and thus wastage of time and money.
    I have been thinking of somethings that are abit different after going through lots of your useful videos.
    Is it possible or more convinient to devide the fish-filter-sump system into many different systems? This means, I will end up having a few number of grow beds per fish-filter-sump system than having all the grow area in one big system? My concern here is that, if I have a system such as that in this video, it's easy to screw the whole system and kill everything but not likely when things are split. Do you believe the extra cost of piping, pumps and power required are worthy than risking the whole project when something bad happens?
    Secondly, is there a company offering electronic logging equipment for aquaponics? I would like to log each and a very useful parameter so that the real time data/recorded can be used or analysed to prevent bad things to happen as well as to increase efficiency, provide a wider picture on how to improve things. This system can assure that the people working on the plant are doing their job right by revising the history of each parameter.
    Your input is highly appreciated in advance.

      Hey Saeed,
      Are you referring to a decoupled aquaponics system when you're talking about dividing the sump? Do you have a diagram of what you're referring to? When I understand this then we can answer the remaining questions you have.

    i have 40,000 litre pond with about 60 koi fish.
    i want to implement aquaponic system to help filter out the water whilts providing some educational benefits. i am hoping to grow veggies to feed the rabbits chooks and fish out of the system.. i am hoping to raise talapia so that children may come and catch the fish with simple bamboo rods and cook em fresh over a fire.
    with the limited amount of space i know that it wont be optimum to process 40k litres of water. we have an under gravel filtration sytem in the pond but lacks plants vegetation to further filter the water of nutrients.
    my question is would the veggies and fish be safe for human consumption in this enclosed environment where by the system is undersized.
    one other way i was planning to filter the water is using a underground flow system planted with vertiver grass in a gravel bed.
    Excess solids would be dumped into the banana circle for compost.
    Pond water would be used to water the landscaping and lawn and the pond will be replenished with water from the well.

    Hey there, I am planning on building a system that will supply my family of 8 with most of our veggie/fruit consumption, which consists mostly of tomatoes, and lettuce. I would like to build a system that I can fit into a greenhouse, and by looking at your formulas it seems I will need a large greenhouse. 60x20. So in trying to reduce the size of space needed, I am looking for a creative solution such as using some flood and drain beds rather then a bio filter/mechanical filter and having worms in those beds to consume solids. And also combining the fish tank/sumptank. What advice or thoughts can you offer me? Your time is much appreciated.

    When calculating the annual fish weight (4,268.5 KG Annual Fish Weight in light green at about 10:37) where did the .5 KG figure come from? You mentioned combining the initial stocking weight, but that would be .05 KG. Did you mean to say desired harvest weight? Or did I miss something?

Do you have any Natural Alternatives I've heard that some styrofoam have fire retardant in them. Is there a chance of some type of cross-contamination? Love the channel keep up the great work one person can change the world. Kind regards Terron Titus Australia.

Or is these a complete system? PS I perfer the Aquaponic do to the fish. I like to also add shellfish will it change the system or make it better?

    Your videos are great. They really help me design my (soon to come) (hopefully commercial) system. But I still have a problem with the UVI Feeding Rate Ratio: it's given in g/m²/day so how does it apply to NFT, zipgrow, vertical aeroponics...? And it feels like it should depend a lot on whether plants are vegetative or fruiting, and on how close together they grow (for example microgreens vs melons).

    • @TheSchoolofAquaponics
      @TheSchoolofAquaponics  7 років тому +2

      The feeding rates are significantly lower for NFT and Vertical systems since they have significantly less water. It's generally recommended to decrease the feeding rate by 75% to accommodate for the 75% less water volume in NFT and vertical. Fruiting crops are a bit more challenging as they require denitrification to occur to lower the nitrate levels for fruit growth. The feeding rate g/m2/day does factor in spacing since crops that can be spaced close together will use less nutrients, and those that are space further will require more. The feeding rates will compensate for spacing differentials.

  • @smiller9112

    I have built a spreadsheet that does the math for me based on your "How Many Fish" example. The one things that bothers me is I learned in your other videos is that it is feed that drives the system which in turn is driven by water volume to get to nutrients in parts per million. Yet the UVI Feeding Ratios are based on Meters squared, not volume. I get how M2 drives the fish and feed numbers based on your example. What it doesn't tell me is the depth of the UVI DWC beds which has to be the assumed depth for all DWC grow beds if M2 is to work as the driving calculation and the UVI Feed Ratios are to work. So can you tell me what the Depth of the UVI DWCs are? From there I can figure out the total water volume more or less and adjust the feed ratios for other types of systems or different depth DWCs. You showed this in episode 35 but the DWC bed you used in that example was 1 ft and the one in this video is 40CM. That is a huge difference and again why I say the M2 has to assume a set depth for the feed ratios to work. Thanks allot, you are really doing some great work with these videos. I am working my way up from the bottom, taking notes, and finding myself re-watching different ones as I continue to learn and better understand. Again, great job.

    • @TheSchoolofAquaponics
      @TheSchoolofAquaponics  7 років тому

      Good questions.
      "UVI Feeding Ratios are based on Meters squared, not volume" This is not the only thing that the feeding rate ratios are based on. When you read the literature from Dr. Rakocy he states that there are other factors such as water volume, flow rates etc.
      "So can you tell me what the Depth of the UVI DWCs are?" the standard depth is 12" This means that the water level is 12 inch, but the actual DWC sides may be 18"

    • @smiller9112
      @smiller9112 7 років тому

      Thanks. After I posted the question I found a PDF with the UVI dimensions. When I did the math it came out to a water depth of 12.4 inches & yes you need running boards on the side above that so 18 sounds about right.
      Did some digging and found the variables you are referring to
      1. Type of System (I.e. water volume)
      2. Type of plants
      3. Composition of source water
      4. Degree and speed of solids removal
      5. Water exchange rate
      So that helps put things in better perspective.
      Thanks again.

  • @MsBigbird2012
    @MsBigbird2012 7 років тому

    Another very good vídeo explanation.
    I was taking a look at the aquaponic system of the UVI and just to clarify, in their system the "clarifier" are the biological filters? Is there a degassing because of the amount of fish? Is it really necessary? "Base adittion" is a separate tank where they add the supplements (calcium, potassium and iron)?

    • @TheSchoolofAquaponics
      @TheSchoolofAquaponics  7 років тому +1

      The UVI system doesn't use separate biological filters. The underside of the floating raft sheets, sides and bottom of the tanks provide enough biological surface area in a properly size DWC system. The clarifiers are the first stage in their solids removal process.
      They are degassing to vent off toxic gases such as carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulfide, and methane, which can affect plant and fish development.
      Degassing is necessary when you're growing at moderate to high stocking densities. Bacteria colonies also increase as stocking density and feed inputs are increased. Bacteria contribute heavily to these toxic gases. Degassing is simply aerating the water to vent the gasses. It's nothing fancy. They use the separate tanks because it help collect the fine solids before they enter the hydroponic component and for a few other reason as well.
      Correct.The base addition tank is where they adjust pH and with calcium and potassium, and also where they supplement Iron.
