I stopped by my local Ferrari dealer last week, and they completely agree with you. While they have both cars available, they believe the 458 is over hyped, and not as usable as a 488. As a result I am actively considering one of these. The only problem is the US market carries a significant premium to the UK market. Perhaps there is an arbitrage possible here.
Got to say and this is very much against opinion but I've got to say I think the 488 looks better than the 458. The front end of the 458 just doesn't do it for me now. The front variable pitch vanes just look a bit tacky and out of place...

Sam I love the bigger films you make with the gorgeous b roll and the fastidious attention to production quality but this more 'raw' content is a lovely addition. I hear you when you say you're flat out but some additional content filmed in the 1 take style would be amazing and I think you'd potentially deliver tye same ROI as some of the more blockbuster stuff. I even think there's space for a '10 minutes with a.....' type format to plug the gap between shorts and the longer form stuff for the main channel and the BTG channel. Basically what I'm saying is that I think I speak on behalf the majority of viewers that we'll welcome all variations of content you put out so the more the better 👏
The Ferrari 488 GTB is indeed a remarkable supercar, blending elegance with performance. Its sleek design, refined lines, and aggressive stance make it a standout. I looooove the 488gtb.
I didn’t need convincing, I’ve always held this view. In fact, the 488 is what the 458 should’ve been to begin with but with a NA engine that delivers the same as the 488. I don’t mind the forced induction though, I actually like it’s performance.
Thank you Sam! Currently on a (re) watch of the Drive The Wolrd videos and can I say, thank you for all those epic adventures, what a drive that was indeed. Standout videos, I watched the wild and crazy, Kansas Porsche 917 city drive video and the cool Biarritz stop over video, first class 👍
The 458 will forever have the reputation of being the modern day pin up car. It’s the one car that even people who aren’t interested in cars know the shape of. It’s quite literally the car of the era (early 21st century)
@@Doko88 I can’t count the 911 because the silhouette hasn’t changed much since it’s conception in the 60s, so it’s not really a car of any particular era
The only thing the 458 has better than the 488 is the sound. Maybe that provides more emotion than the load of extra performance we get from a 488. I doubt it!
Appreciate this video, as I was (fortunately) in the situation you describe. I had a 458 for a short period, it was the best car I'd ever had the experience of driving or owning. Fairly soon after buying it, I wanted to find a better spec / low mileage 458 "to have forever" and quickly realized I was practically in 488 price territory. I asked several long time Ferrari owners what I should do, and shockingly, all of them said "go for the 488". I ended up finding a heavily optioned 488, and was blown away by the performance after the 458. You can't go wrong with either, obviously, but I do agree too many enthusiasts rule the 488 out just because it's not NA. When I first got my 488, I admittedly was not happy with the sound, but after a full titanium Ryft catback, it sounds great. Does it sound like the 458? Of course not, but that doesn't mean it doesn't sound incredible. I've been extremely happy with the 488, it's a special car, and know anyone with an opinion would agree if they actually drove one instead of compared it to the 458 "just because". It's apples to oranges, anyway, and it's evolution from Ferrari. The NA feel of the 488 is just insane engineering.
So ironic my co worker just purchased a 488. And I couldn't agree more. Although my Boss daily drives the 812 they're really horses for courses in this instance.
As much as I have forever disagreed with you and Tony on the 488 over the 458 opinion, you stood true to the mantra of "show don't tell".... annnnnd now I'm heavily & stubbornly reconsidering my opinion 😅. My average electricity bill is as much as the value of a small holiday these days, so I'll never get the chance to consider purchasing one but if my bank account randomly filled with money I think I would end up following yours & Tony's advice. Thanks for the great content mate! I only get to drive my ST150 once a week for a fun blast on a Sunday, but I look forward to doing so while listening to your podcast.
Congratulations for the video ! Guys, anyone moving to 488 from California T? I am considering this to have more fun, am I right ? (previously owned an FF, an F12, a Cali and a Cali T but never a v8 central one).
It's a close decision between 430, 458 and 488 for me. (With my imaginary purchase). 488 probably comes on top because it has much more interesting specs to choose from.
I think it’s hard to argue from a depreciation standpoint, you acknowledge the 458’s legendary reputation. That in and of itself will mean that you lose far more money owning a 488 most likely.
Lose money? Ha! Not in the long run. This is truth for most any prancing horse. This current EV trending away from internal combustion will only exacerbate that further.
Big 488 fan… 458 was the ‘poster’ Ferrari bar the laf for a long long time… the pista for me is a podium car of all time… any 488 sub 150k is a bargain imo
Great car, no doubt. I’m casually shopping 4.7 V8 Vantages. Manual, NA V8, good reliability record and tons more up side for the future. Not to mention less than 1/2 the price. The prancing horse is an irresistible magnet for lots of folks, so the 488 can scratch that itch.
Sold. That is as soon as I can afford a high-maintenance, fair-weather, novelty, minimum 200k USD car that you can't park nearly anywhere without people complaining about grocery prices keying it. It won't be long before owners of said cars don't park one anywhere but home and the country club. Which they seemingly do now anyway. I don't recall the last time I saw a Ferrari parked after leaving Hermosa Beach.
@@michaelmich00 first 7 yrs are covered for routine maintenance by Ferrari. Yrly or every 12000 miles which ever is first. The extended warranties of V8s cost about 5300$ after the initial warranty at 3 goes off. The power 15 warranty with annual service costs about 6200$ for cars in their 8th yr. The warranty covers a lot of the most expensive parts, engine, transmission, turbos, just paid for my exhaust vacuum solenoid, including replacing the hoses, which was making some noises. Covered services mean that the diagnosis is then covered too which can cost hundreds especially when they've got to take off the rear bumper to diagnose. It also covers towing the vehicle with a 24/7 service. I personally budget about $10000 a yr between warranties and possible routine wear and tear stuff like a tire. My husband has hit two potholes in his Audi and ruined two nearly new tires. You Cannot predict anything these days. I’m now getting a v12 Lusso cpo added to my garage with a two yr warranty but without the maintenance because they don’t offer it on the Lusso after its 7 yr. I’m figuring all in yrly costs after the first 2 yrs at around $13000 all in, car insurance and registration, warranty and yrly maintenance but a note of caution where I live my insurance is cheap. $2236 a yr for 3000miles full replacement coverage. It’s an expensive hobby or love affair….take your pick. But when you get in and start it up, you'll never stop smiling.
@@carolneumann2860 did the math in europe and will be 20k a year, not making me smile enough to see 20k evaporate as weekend car lol. thanks for your full answer. i need to move to the us or buy a cheaper model
@@michaelmich00 I’d have issues with 20k too for one car.The one thing with Europe is the cars are usually much cheaper than in the states. I paid 275k$ for a cpo spider, 3 yrs ago, and they're still asking up near there for the same aged car with a little less mileage at dealers. So depreciation has been nil especially since I’ve maintained the warranty. However in the case of my 488 which I love, will it be a 30+ yr keeper like my 308GTS? Not likely. With all the computers valve controllers etc etc etc, it will eventually become a nightmare, unless Ferrari has an aggressive aftermarket in parts for the 488, but I will enjoy it for a few more yrs. Now that Ferrari is offering battery protection on their hybrids that will protect the eventual second owner of a 296 or SF90, maybe my next with a trade in. Or I trade in both the 488 and Lusso that’s incoming for a Purosangue CPO’d in a few yrs. Not sure I’ll ever get to spec a new one. It would be tempting .
prices in the UK are crazy (RHD...less people want them). In Switzerland it's still 200k for a 488, same as an F12. I think i'd go for an F12 at that price
Great vid Sam. I'm thinking of selling my 430 Scuderia after 12 years of ownership and have my eye on either a 488 or 992 GT3. Which route would you go?
You're dead right, I could buy one of these instead of the SF90 I was looking at with by company bonus this year, which leaves me with enough money to install a swimming pool in my holiday home.
Didn't need to be convinced. Was always my #1 mid-engine modern Ferrari. Now, please never mention it again... Keep the prices relatively(?) reasonable.
If your buying a Ferrari it’s a great day regardless of model. I love both the 458 and 488 and although at first I didn’t like the look of it at first I think the f8 might be the one to have in the long run.
Hi sam, you have been very excited previously about the 458 and even considered buying one but now you said you won’t consider buying a 458? Just want your perspective and opinion.
Didn't like these when they came out, now I'd prefer one over a 458 which I think looks a little awkward. Given the choice though I'd still pick a 458 Speciale over either (very different price point I know).
Excellent video, for me the 488 suffers from people being too purists and wanting to fit in with the community. Like, established figures in the enthusiast world and other people who think the same will say, “I like a clean looking car so I don’t look like a wanna be loser”, “I must have a N/A engine because sound is the most important part of the driving experience”, blah blah blah. Hence the 488 vs 458 battle will always be won by the 458. Everybody then latches on to these opinions and makes it sort of folklore, because they like these journalists/influencers. I wish all car lovers could be more themselves and not be afraid to share their preferences and opinions, without fear of being ridiculed for it. I always thought the 488 looked better than the 458, those side air inlets, the angry lights and bumper and the beautiful rear end with the sculpted taillights. Will always be right up there in my dream Ferrari wish list.
You mean like being the owner of a V8 Ferrari back in the 80s when they were frowned upon by the V12 crowd. Those aren’t real Ferraris they’d say. They’re Dinos. Well, my ‘79 308 GTS said Ferrari and it still does.

@@dddd-uk4vn You have seen Ferrari styling since they dropped Pininfarina and went 'in-house'? Disaster - Half Lambo half Corvette 🤢
@@BombSponge like i said a lot of hte pininfarina designers stayed at ferrari, anyway the newer ferraris look much better. they also have a lot of design elements from classic 60s/70s/80s ferraris
I absolutely love the 488, especially the looks!
If money wasn’t a problem for me, I’d love a nice 488. Probably the same spec as this too with the red interior. Lovely.
The 488 have grown on me in such a positive way. I love that car and if I had the money I would choose that over the 458 any given day and put an exhaust on it for more noise. It's a stunning car to look at aswell!
I've had my 488 for over two years now and absolutely love it! Can't see me changing it, where else can you go without spending 80k more. Great video, trust sam and buy one if you have the budget.
720s 😅
488 is a massively underrated Ferrari. The Pista is probably the pinnacle of the V8s
Recently you were talking about buying a Portofino. Why not 488 instead?
Got to say and this is very much against opinion but I've got to say I think the 488 looks better than the 458. The front end of the 458 just doesn't do it for me now. The front variable pitch vanes just look a bit tacky and out of place...
Ive just brought a 488 in may 2024 so this title made me smile!
I've only owned a few Alfas, 4C and the Gulia Quadrifoglio and I'm new to the channel but I love this video and fully respect Ferrari. I live in the US and I know there's an exchange rate difference but dang the prices here are are insane 😢 Great video! The 488 GTB is legendary and its looks are galoriousness 😍
Amazing video! These one-take videos are nice
Who didn't see Sam's video with 488 and Sebastian Vettel, look it up now. You will see what a beast this car can be in skilled pair of hands.
I heard a cold start of one of these the other day and it sounded like thunder or a speed boat starting up. Either they had an aftermarket exhaust or they actually sound good on start up
Sam I love the bigger films you make with the gorgeous b roll and the fastidious attention to production quality but this more 'raw' content is a lovely addition.
I did a similar review a few months ago in a 488 Spider and came to the same conclusion.
I didn’t need convincing, I’ve always held this view. In fact, the 488 is what the 458 should’ve been to begin with but with a NA engine that delivers the same as the 488. I don’t mind the forced induction though, I actually like it’s performance.
Sold here mate! Never really been desperate for a Ferrari on the dream list, but you've added a 488 to my lotto win / dream job list.
Thank you Sam! Currently on a (re) watch of the Drive The Wolrd videos and can I say, thank you for all those epic adventures, what a drive that was indeed. Really enjoyed, hopefully a new DTW video series for other parts of the world, will happen soon. Standout videos, I watched the wild and crazy, Kansas Porsche 917 city drive video and the cool Biarritz stop over video, first class 👍
No comparison. I honestly don't understand the dilemma. The 488 is the better car. And looks the part to.
The 488 was the first supercar I ever drove, and it remains my dream car to this day. Above anything else even HyperCars
Yet you have a Koenigsegg agera r as your profile pic. Not hating still good choice😂
Same here I rented one back in 2019 I been love struck since lol
488 is the best Ferrari as long as you mount a Novitec exhaust.
Never thought like this some years back, but the 488 does age better than the 458 from a visual standpoint
I always thought it looked cleaner than the 458
Nice video Sam. I agree. 488 is a great car. 👌👏
It still looks better than most new Ferraris of today. Beautiful.
The 458 will forever have the reputation of being the modern day pin up car. It’s the one car that even people who aren’t interested in cars know the shape of. It’s quite literally the car of the era (early 21st century)
People who aren't interested in cars think the 458, 488, and F8 look the same
Dumbest comment in yhe comments. @@macnugget
I think the Car that you Are Talking about is a 911 😂
@@Doko88 I can’t count the 911 because the silhouette hasn’t changed much since it’s conception in the 60s, so it’s not really a car of any particular era
@@macnugget true, but they all look like the one that came first, which is the 458
It might be a controversial statement but I love the sound of 488!
@@amanalisaiyyad9281 not controversial at all. I find it exquisitely intoxicating
Been saying this for months. Good looking, fast, 800 bhp with a map, it can compete with any new super car and it’s got the handling to match.
Love the looks tbh, still „classic“, but a modern beast underneath
I wasn't sure, but NOW I'm buying it.
Agree about the 488 being spec dependent, that all red is a million times better than the red & black from your ferrari factory video 👍
Same car in Australia is nearly AUD500,000
Yes a 488 for me. Excellent review!
The 488 looks absolutely gorgeous! I would choose it over the 458 just for that reason alone.
So ironic my co worker just purchased a 488. And I couldn't agree more. Although my Boss daily drives the 812 they're really horses for courses in this instance.
How about a 599? 612 horsepower Enzo derived V12 for 90-odd grand. Sounds pretty good to me
Looks ugly for me, much worse then f12
Get equal length exhaust headers(manifolds) for your 599 and it's gonna be pure heaven.
Better not get it straight-piped though. Way too loud and would become a poser's edition imo.
Until you have to have it serviced………
I love the 488!! Keen for this!!
I drove it before Covid , it’s was fantastic.
I think it’s hard to argue from a depreciation standpoint, you acknowledge the 458’s legendary reputation. That in and of itself will mean that you lose far more money owning a 488 most likely.
Unless they've already bottomed out
Lose money?
Everyone was anti turbo when these came out. Now everything is turbocharged. Worth the money
I got to drive the Ferrari 488 GTB at the Austin Drive Way Track.. Good times!
The 488 is the better car but Ferrari is all about passion and so the N/A vehicles tend to hold a higher place in enthusiasts' minds.
I've had my 488 Spider for a year and it's a tremendous machine. With the stock exhaust even, it's pretty loud. It's a keeper for sure.
how is maintenance costs?
@@michaelmich00 Its still under the 7 year maintenance program
I guess i was a little early. Last year chose a 488 spider over a 458 spider. Have had a blast.
Sound is on point imo, want to upgrade? Listen to the novitec video of the 488, to good
prices in the UK are crazy (RHD...less people want them). In Switzerland it's still 200k for a 488, same as an F12. I think i'd go for an F12 at that price
I'm all 488. If the 458 had the intakes like the 430 and the 488;I'd be for the 458. But 488 reminds me of of my favorite, the 430
If you ever get a chance to view a 488 parked near or next to a LaFerrari and 458, see how much more the 488 resembles the ultimate modern Ferrari.
Couldn't have said it better!! Totally agree..... Absolutely fantastic, and very handsome looking car 👌
Shout out the subscriber who lent you his car to you to film with.
Great video, Sam! I love the 488 however the F8 Tributo in a few years might be even a better bet. I love the rear window that references the F40 🖖🏼❤
If your buying a Ferrari it’s a great day regardless of model. I love both the 458 and 488 and although at first I didn’t like the look of it at first I think the f8 might be the one to have in the long run.
Agree Sam, the 488 is a masterpiece :-)
Hi sam, you have been very excited previously about the 458 and even considered buying one but now you said you won’t consider buying a 458? Just want your perspective and opinion.
Didn't like these when they came out, now I'd prefer one over a 458 which I think looks a little awkward. Given the choice though I'd still pick a 458 Speciale over either (very different price point I know).
Will choose the 458 anytime over the 488
Excellent video, for me the 488 suffers from people being too purists and wanting to fit in with the community.
I´m buying a 458 Italia or a 488 GTB for 2025. This video helped a little bit!! I´ve owned both before but it´s actually hard to decide!! Great video Sam!!!
Looks so much better without the black roof.
Its funny i was doing my deliverys last week and i parked next to a red 458 and had a look and still WOW what a car. Still looks so good and has such presence. And of course it would be more than fast enough that anyone would want.
