Elliott Smith's Right Hand Technique, Other Times

- Sorry for the sloppiness.
Songs are "The White Lady Loves You More" and "Easy Way Out".
Again, not even kind of a little bit of a tutorial - more an attempt at a demonstration of why this is tricky and weird and fun. Elliott has a way of making his thumb so much louder than his index and middle finger in these songs and it's difficult to replicate - for me anyway. His thumb is so much louder that a lot of people ignore the triplets all together and just play eighths instead, which is almost what it sounds like is happening if you're not listening closely enough.
Left hand is likely not accurate; just figured it out by ear real quick so I could work on the right hand.
His strumming technique combined with his tuning and chord selections made him very unique, it was all magic
Beautifully played, thank you.
I realized how essential his thumb is to his playing by watching your vids. the independence of it. like how travis picking works but he applied it to waltzes and strumming. I have an fg180 red label too. one day I hope to play as good as you!
please keep doing these
as a self taught guitarist, i develped that picking/strumming style on nessesity. I never had picks around and when I did it felt wrong. years later I started learning Elliott's songs and was supprised how naturally it came!
The white lady loves you more was the first song i heard from elliott. It played in a Gus Van Sant movie called Paranoid Park. Got hooked and 10+ years later, still one of my favorite singer/songwriters. You played this and Easy Way Out beautifully
Oh shit I love Gus Van Sant I think I heard of that movie I need to watch it
So good to the ears! thank you for this amazing short video
I love these, they’re so super helpful. Many thanks!
life saver!!! please don’t stop
so beautiful
this is amazing and sounds just like him
beautiful, thank you
So smooth, I don't even play guitar but I did enjoy every second of this clip.
Beautiful man ❤
very interesting - thank you!
This is incredible
easy way out is immaculate, would love to hear a full cover . even if its purely instrumental
🥲so good man... sounds really like his unique way of playing it's crazy
I got, stuck on a side, you know, I never chose
Great job playing these songs!! Learning these were for sure landmarks in my playing. I hope this doesn't come across as nit-picky, but the way that Elliott does that style is a tad bit different than you demonstrated although there's nothing wrong with playing it like this. It's a bit closer to the flamenco guitar technique where the index and bird fingers play the same string back to back, but Elliot's version of it is a LOT sloppier and more haphazard, watch either of these songs or Tomorrow Tomorrow live and you can kinda see it. He kinda just throws his hand around lol truly order out of chaos. Point is, don't apologize for the "sloppiness!!" I think often times some of Elliott's spirit can be lost in a cover when its super clean and polished.
very cool, i'll work on that - thanks!
Elliott Smith is a cheeseball and I love him thank you
No Elliott slander
@@punisher2511 you're right im sorry. He was a good man
@@EllieLindhorst ahha you’re good. I was just thinking I’m definitely a cheeseball myself. Fucken stoner ass.
I recognize that signature Elliott sound
great video thanks
Tiny. Mind. Blown.
So impressive! This is truly awesome!
super smooth transition between the two. still tryna get my thumb to be a little more accurate haha
Nice guitar
You should do a left hand to these too so we can learn the entire tune .
u are such a beautiful guitar player i hope to meet you one day
Absolutely loved this video! Is there any chance of getting a more in depth tutorial of The White Lady Loves You More. One of my favourite songs!
i already forgot it, sorry!
@@brushstrokemedallion Ah that's alright no worries!
Noice!
youre a champion
please more content bro
amazingggg
I think you should protract the thumb a bit more forward, but it sounds great. I love your guitar sound.
what’s your guitar? sounds exactly like his
fg-180
I really need help with The Last Hour, you got any insight on that one? These videos are super helpful.
are you referring to the right hand pattern?
made a tutorial for you. hope this is what you were looking for: ua-cam.com/video/Q7wCGazQgiE/v-deo.html
Could you maybe make some more in-depth tutorials? I've been trying to replicate this and the other video. It seems so subtle but it's so tricky 🤣
do you have a specific song you're interested in? i can do my best.
@@brushstrokemedallion hey mate thanks for the response. I'd be interested in Roman candle or new disaster. But it's my other fingers in having trouble with. I'm getting the bass note down but in not sure what I should be doing with my index, middle ect. More refering to the other video as the technique in this seems more straight forward.
@@ryanagar7498here you go. i made anther video. hope it's helpful! ua-cam.com/video/Djk7g5pO7N8/v-deo.html
How do you play it that fast
For me, impossible
Can you play the same but where we can see both hands?
already forgot it, sorry!
@@brushstrokemedallion No problem😄
Is that a Kay guitar?
it’s a yamaha
Can you do a video on Tomorrow Tomorrow?
sorry, i don't know it but there's a couple good tutorials out there. good luck!
