Elliott Smith's Right Hand Technique, Yet Again, With Words!

This is a special request but hopefully it's useful for others as well. Note: I once again profess wholeheartedly that I'm in no way an authority on this technique or even claim to be doing it right at all, but I've made these videos because I feel like I've gotten pretty close. Elliott has a way of making his fingerpicking and strumming blur together in a way that not many others seem to have ...
Elliott Smith's Right Hand Technique, Other Times

Sorry for the sloppiness. Songs are "The White Lady Loves You More" and "Easy Way Out". Again, not even kind of a little bit of a tutorial - more an attempt at a demonstration of why this is tricky and weird and fun. Elliott has a way of making his thumb so much louder than his index and middle finger in these songs and it's difficult to replicate - for me anyway. His thumb is so much louder th...

...in which I try to scratch the surface of the elusive half-strumming/half-fingerpicking technique that pervades so many of Elliott's songs allowing them to inhabit this tricky world of, "wait, is that one or two guitars playing?", etc. By no means a tutorial, this video is just an attempt to replicate the tricky thing myself and maybe provide help for other people having trouble figuring out ...

thia was a random reccomendation for me on youtube's new algo,. LOVED the intro, what a cute dog! Labrador? And the music at the end transifed me, who was playing and which song please?
thanks :) we’ve yet to figure out what kind of angel dog she is and the music at the end is katypinke.bandcamp.com/track/one-coin
You did the most simple but best video I seen trying to figure out Elliott Smiths…magic like slight of the hand. I’ll literally watch him play a song live that I can finger pick very well but it’s that sleight of hand that even zoomed in I’m like…”Alright…I’m over here trying to be articulate as possible with a surgeons wrist and he just made it look like…nothing (punny).
Are you playing standard tuning on No Name #3? And are you starting with your index and pinky on 3rd and 7th Frets on High & Low E strings for the first chord?
I’d love to see an explanation of his strumming on his live version of Southern Belle. Amazing video btw
that song is 100% beyond my skill level - sorry!
@@brushstrokemedallion All good 😂 Thanks for the reply
@@brushstrokemedallionI really don’t think it is. I used to be able to play it pretty well when I practised it, always with a few blemishes but had the idea for the most part. And you picked this technique up way better than I ever have. It does take a lot of practice and focus at first but you could definitely play it better than me in a week or two from now
1:00 what song iss ? or chordssss plssss
1:04 what song/ chords is ?
oh man i used to own that danelectro on the wall 😭
Mbira, toscana, cornetto…good selection❤
Your guitar sounds great, how exactly have you modded the bridge?
it's a balloon
@@brushstrokemedallion oh wow! Just pulled under the strings and laid over the bridge?
yep!
Do you keep your nails pretty short to make it easier to strike with the fleshy part? The look pretty long from the video, I feel like I can hear a tiny bit of nail but it's super soft. Heaps thinks for this - it sounds great the way you're playing it
Also if you have the chord voicing written down, we'd be forever grateful :)
Thank you so much man. I can’t wait to try this. By the way your voice is so nice to listen to, bob Ross energy. I wish I had your voice in my head guiding me through life 😆
the intro sounded GREAT
YES, i need an extended version of it, or even an entire song on any streaming platform!!
Hii! I discovered your channel thru your pencil video several years ago and I found it super sweet and very human. I am also a musician based in Brooklyn so it was cool to find that out about whoever you are. I can't make it to the show Friday but I would love to see your stuff at some point soon; where can I find out about future shows? The guitar/clarinet duo sounded sick. Also very cute dog.
aw thanks! my IG is @zerostairs and the guitar/clarinet IG @dotmichaeldot. shows will always be posted there
thanks so much for doing this 👍

Great discovery session!!!!!! This is how you teach. I heae a lot of Arlo Guthrie in your picking and strumming. Check out Arlo Guthrie songs. You will dig him. You would be a great guitar teacher just doing this with students
Awesome training!!!
Terrific tutorial, medallion
On New Disaster, do you use your index? Maybe only to slightly touch B and E?

@@brushstrokemedallion oh thanks a lot!
thanks a lot mate, i was just wondering what guitar strings u use to get that lovely warm sound or is it your guitar?
put a balloon over the bridge and you’re good to go. it helps dampen some of the higher frequencies and clips the sustain a little. having a tiny parlor guitar will help too but this is my sister’s guitar and the strings probably haven’t changed since 2010 so i don’t know if that’s where the secret lies.
@@brushstrokemedallion thanks mann!
What a great short and sweet lesson, you do the song great justice
I trust no one on youtube but this seems trustworthy
haha thank you
Beautiful playing!
Noice!
Is that a Norma?? I just bought a guitar with a pickguard like yours for 15 bucks at a antique store. It’s a Norma from the 60s.
Great explanation of Elliotts right hand technique! Spot on!
I really love the way your voice sounds if you ever wanted could you drop a cover? Please?
ua-cam.com/video/cSRWzVz1zJ8/v-deo.html
@@brushstrokemedallion that cover is really good thank you!! but I meant specifically of new disaster but no worries❤
@@losemylove ahh sorry!
u sound like elliott dude!
This is pure gold. Thank you.
absolutely amazing
Thanks!
Great job playing these songs!! Learning these were for sure landmarks in my playing. I hope this doesn't come across as nit-picky, but the way that Elliott does that style is a tad bit different than you demonstrated although there's nothing wrong with playing it like this. It's a bit closer to the flamenco guitar technique where the index and bird fingers play the same string back to back, but Elliot's version of it is a LOT sloppier and more haphazard, watch either of these songs or Tomorrow Tomorrow live and you can kinda see it. He kinda just throws his hand around lol truly order out of chaos. Point is, don't apologize for the "sloppiness!!" I think often times some of Elliott's spirit can be lost in a cover when its super clean and polished.
very cool, i'll work on that - thanks!
This is really cool. Thank you.
pencil forever
Hello, May I share the most important news you will ever hear in your life? God the Father sent His holy Son Jesus Christ(Y'shua Ha' Mashiach) from heaven to earth, to be born of a virgin. He grew up and died on the cross for our sins. He was put into a tomb for 3 days, and then Abba Father raised Jesus to life and He appeared to people and went back to Heaven. We must all sincerely receive Jesus to be a true child of God. It says in John 1:12 "But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name." Will you genuinely believe on Christ Jesus and truly receive Him today, before it is too late?
that’s amazing, man
This is incredible
Hahahahaha I love this so much. What’s the name of the band? Edit; nm, just saw a bandcamp link
Wild. It’s almost a flamenco technique mixed with like folk and classical thumb stuff.
I am getting more depressed feeling so inadequate. You are making me tear up. I feel so emotional hearing this
so damn sweet
wait, there's Sean Mullins too?
buon occhio :)
I really hope you see this - could you do a tutorial for The Last Hour?? It's so beautiful, but I just can't figure it out by myself :)
i made a video on the right hand a while ago. the left hand after the intro is just simple bar chords. hope this helps: ua-cam.com/video/Q7wCGazQgiE/v-deo.html
@@brushstrokemedallion thank you so so much!! I didn't know that you already did a tutorial on that one - this made my day! :))
Is there a way that you can play it in standard or just this way?
pencil forever
Ofc this came out a few days after i learned it by ear 🙃🙃 still learned a lot though. Thank you.
Besides the rhythm hand, this song is really not very difficult to play. Thanks for the lesson!
Do you have any tips on how to do the rhythm?
@@Bodhiz26 hard to put into words really. But it’s just a constant back and forth between thumb and pointer finger. Very much a signature Elliott style of rhythm. I think the guy who posted this lesson has a video on Elliot’s strumming technique, but I don’t remember if it touches on this particular song or not. My tip would be to keep learning Elliott songs and developing good fluidity with your rhythm hand.
I somehow never knew about this song, or New Moon, despite being a fan of Elliott for well over a decade lol. Thanks for the tutorial!
Where did you find this specific song? I can’t find it on bandcamp
we filmed it in a mcdonalds parking lot coming back from the catskills one morning. i believe i got the oatmeal.
Only now realizing you use your pointer for stroking the open A and C, already said it before but you’re a legend for this vid, don’t think I could learn this song without it.
happy to help :)
