Yeah, i definitely wished i was white too, growing up. I wished i was American too as a South African Indian girl who sees Africa described as a country where everyone is either dying of starvation or has HIV/AIDS. And in media, where the whole Asian continent is seen as the same thing. I feel you guys. With Asians, the model student stereotype can be annoying, but not as actively harmful as an excessively violent portrayal the way it is in media with Latin American people.

    • @itsdivyag
      @itsdivyag  6 років тому +45

The issue with these is that it perpetuates this stereotypes and people who may not know better start to believe it. It gets so ingrained and we consume so much media that when this message is actively being redistributed it's annoying but also harmful. I think when people say "it's just tv" or "it's just a movie" we tend to underestimate the impact of the media we consume and how it can act in shaping our view of the world.

I’m Afro-Latina, and even though I’m not Asian, I completely relate! When I was watching the movie, I loved seeing the family scenes and watching them bond over food and music and art. Even though our cultures are completely different, I find that there are still so many similarities.
There were honestly three moments that almost made me cry in CRA:
    (SPOILERS)
-The Wedding. I kept it together, but omfg it was beautiful. And the husband was crying, and the wife was crying, and Rachel was crying, and I was almost crying. It was so gorgeous, it melted my ice cold heart.
-When her mom came. Listen....LISTEN. Even though we’re all supposedly grown ups, we still have moments when we need a hug. When her mom showed up to take her home, and she cried “Mom!” and held her. I felt that. And I felt for her.
-The ending. After all the shit this girl went through, he races to the airplane, and it’s tight and crappy and it’s so cliche but Yellow is playing in the background and everyone’s crying, and the engagement ring was the mom’s. I’m getting emotional just thinking about it, my dude.

That feeling of not really feeling like a part of your own culture resonates heavily on me. I can barely speak my own language anymore, I've grown up predominantly in white private schools, always wanted to be an actress but from a young age I barely ever saw dark brown skin girls represented in the media. I feel like I'm so integrated into a Western Culture and yet I even live in an African country. It sometimes makes me feel so sad but it was nice to see that someone could relate and understand. In black culture I'd typically be known as a coconut or an Oreo, black on the outside white on the inside 😒 Edit: ABSolutely faBulouS

I think it is important because it doesn't just relate to movies but permeates in everyday interactions with people too. Movies are a form of escapism but also can be an exaggerated glimpse into the world we live in today and culture. In casting, for example, it's harder for non-white actors to even be considered for roles that may not have race as an important factor and they're automatically shut out from opportunities. Same goes for modeling. It's true, Bollywood is the largest movie industry and there are other sources besides Hollywood but I think it's beneficial for everyone if we were more accepting to learn about different cultures. It's also better for kids growing up in western civilization to at least see diversity on screen.

I live in Indonesia (for those who don't know: Indonesia is in Asia) and I used to go to a private school where almost everyone was rich so when I first heard of this I thought that it would appeal to my best friend more because she is crazy, she is rich, and she is Asian meanwhile I am just an American-Indonesian mix that's just middle class. Who knew I could relate so much? It's like how I don't feel accepted into the Asian, richer, side of the family. And how people still don't see me as one of them even though I have been living here for most of my life.

Honestly, Crazy Rich Asians was such an enjoyable film (this is coming from someone who isn't necessarily the biggest fan of rom-coms) and I think it's so great to show diversity within media like this. I think so great that we are seeing more represntation in media (though it is a slow process). I'm white so I have had representation in media in that respect, but I realize that seeing a character that you can relate to in some way or other can be really impactful (I happened to read a book in which the main character had asthma and it didn't automatically make them useless and I was really happy about that when I was younger) and I think it's important to feel represented and valued in media and not like a sidekick or background character the whole time

I feel like I should get this off my chest: As someone who is of half Filipino descent, I can’t help but feel jealous of people who are East Asian/of East Asian descent. In the US, I usually only see East Asian representation, and that makes me very, very jealous. No one I know of thinks Southeast Asians/other Asians are “cool”. It’s only the East Asians/people of East Asian descent that are considered “cool”. Sigh...

-Did you hear that CRA just became the highest grossing (domestically) rom-com in a decade?
-I wonder if the book got the same criticism of "it's called Crazy Rich ASIANS but the book isn't representative of ALL Asian ethnicities." There have been significantly more books made than movies made by and about Asian Americans that went on to be commercially successful, so I imagine that in the literary world there's significantly less pressure to represent and please everyone.
-Yeah, the abs are nice. I thought it was hilarious when we're introduced to Astrid's husband and we see him in the shower and we see him toweling off and we see nothing but his pecs, abs, and back, and it's a while before we end up seeing his damn face. But, I suppose more important than the abs are Henry Golding's charms. He's very warm and sweet and he's not cold and cruel.
-I'm glad that I was committed enough to watch the whole video and I got a room tour sneak peak! I moved into my new place months ago and I still have shit in boxes, I still have nowhere to hang my clothes, and my bed frame broke like a month and a half ago (the night I saw Crazy Rich Asians) and I moved my mattress on the floor and have been sleeping there since. So your room looks great to me.

11:27 Seriously?! I have a very strong Asian-face bias (as in, I feel like Asian faces are marginally more attractive than anything else, don't worry, I don't treat non-Asians like crap) so this is really hard to believe.
....then again, I'm one of those idiots who would take a 2D character over a 3D person.

It's a broad statement and I'm not saying no one finds them hot! In an every day personal preference it doesn't apply but in relation to western media, there's a trend to emasculate Asian males. There's been statistics surrounding online dating apps (tinder) where it's been found that Asian males have the most trouble finding matches or being deemed to be attractive, comparable to black females!

The quote from your friend resonates exactly how I feel. I always feel like I belong nowhere except with my siblings who speaks English as a first language. Thanks for this video, it was entertaining and yet comforting xx

My favorite video out of the 4 I’ve seen thus far, like how you spoke on identity, culture, and mainstream media having unrealistic standards and also “white” standard bc idk how else to encapsulate that, but I’m multicultural mess in America, never really integrated with any one category, don’t fluently speak Spanish, but can speak it colloquially and read and write, but this country does make you feel ashamed or inferior for not being that mainstream standard, which is very sad since there are many people of all cultures in America. With my family being scattered everywhere, it’s impossible to feel that support for self identification, although maybe one would say this is a better way to identify now bc you truly know who and what you are. There was a point I thought I was white, until I had people tell me I wasn’t, then I realized I don’t want to be white, I like being who I am, but being “brainwashed” by the media isn’t cool. Women have these absurd standards to measure up to, then if your beauty doesn’t align with those standards your viewed as inferior or mediocre. So yeah that’s my spiel.

hi lol i found your channel a couple of months ago and immediately subscribed bc i found your sense of humor to be absolutely hilarious. i just wanted to tell you that i relate to you sm, growing up in a foreign country, like you i felt the need to fit in and be "american" and throw away my culture. I felt ashamed as a kid bc I got teased for my culture, for wearing chapal and for the food my mom cooked for me. I grew out of that mindset but i always felt so guilty for feeling that way even for a little while. I've come to embrase and love my culture but the fact that there are so many people that still feel that way bc of our society is really saddening. I would say that media's portration of asian people has played a huge role in all this, as they are always protrayed to be kinda just in the background. Even main character roles that are meant to be asian are given to white ppl like theres a sortage of asians or something when LITERALLY asians make up more than half the population of the world!! like wtf does it make ANY sense!! *cough ghost in the shell, avatar the last air bender live action cough* anyways aside from my rant im so happy that asians are FINALLY starting to be represented in the big screens !! Llike you said although it is not representing any nepali culture, i still felt a sense of pride and belonging that i could relate to the culture and that these ppl on the screen looked like me and for once they werent just thrown in the background, it felt like we actually do matter and that we are good enough. And like you said, we shouldnt have to feel greatful that a minority is given important roles bc it should be a given that these ppl also have just as much rights to be represented however our society has such a lack of it that i cant help but feel greatful. I feel greatful that we are finally being represented and that this has created opportunities for other minorities as much as asians and bc of this sm ppl have found a platform to speak up about their personal experience and stand up for their culture. With that being said, i would like to conclude and say thank you to divya for sharing yours, it inspired me to share mine :)
(the g stand for gurung bheda ;)
