As the world reflects on the ANC's struggle since 1912, South Africa also remembers a leader who is often overlooked by the international community: Robert Sobukwe, founder of the Pan-Africanist Congress.
Sobukwe would never see his dream of "South Africa's youth, walking tall, in a country they call their own." He is a man with a remarkable legacy. In particular, his monumental call to action against the pass laws, on 21st March 1960. Heeding the call, thousands of black South Africans left their pass books at home and marched to their police stations, demanding arrest. "You had to give non-violence a chance. That was Sobukwe's mission." Protesters paid the price: police opened fire in the Sharpeville massacre and Sobukwe suffered years of imprisonment. But the protest left an indelible mark on international consciousness and helped clear the path for the ANC to change South African politics.

Its sad that not even a single recording of this man is available. I wish I could hear his voice.
He was so powerful, they would not even let a video be available online of him, while all others are there, ei madoda.
Thank you so much. I was at university in Cape Town in those years and even on that campus we did not know everything. Robert Sobukwe is the true Africa. I left South Africa in July 1978 as I found I could no longer live in an Apartheid society, either professionally or morally. South Africa is extremely important for what happens there is a blue-print of the world's future. "It is not only the whole of Africa that is at stake, but also the whole of humanity. Only humanity is asleep to itself and too lazy to think. This was to be the role of South Africa. The Apartheid law was not a law only against the non-white, but in truth, against Man himself as a sentient being with a mission to fulfil for Creation." This is from the Postscript of my book on S.A. "White Witness". I quote not for publicity but simply to say that this is what I believe to be true. The road is not easy but neither is anything of value. Thank you again for the video. Bless you. Marianne
Okay
May his soul Rest in peace, he is without a peer after his death in 28 Feb 1978. His honest and couregious leadership is missed by the world globally
He could have been the prime minister of his own people...not ruling the whiteman...he would have been great in that context...just look at South Africa now....completely stuffed
@@davidverster9523i love this great Honorable Afrikan Warrior King! and i'm sure those that knew and know of him miss him but we must Celebrate our great Honorable Ancestors keep there spirit alive and we as Black Afrikan Jamaican people need too learn to tell our own stories!!😒🥺😕🧐 and stop listening to his-stories 😕🤔 We must Celebrate our Ancestors and teach show there videos 📹 reach one teach one!👍🏿🫶🏿💪🏿👊🏾✊🏿🙏🏿🤲🏿💜💫
He would be 100yrs this year.. one of the greatest leaders ever lived
One thing that always stands out for me about our forefathers (freedom fighters) was their eloquence and intelligence
The ANC, EFF and MK represent a false sense of that especially the last 2. These guys are leading people down the wrong path. I wonder if the PAC led us where we would be
I also thought the same thing! They dressed so respectfully and valued education! WOW! Our forefathers, our roots.
and that is how they took the challenge to the oppressors .. nowadays we have a bunch of miseducated fools carrying out the enemies agenda without a blink
@johnfelixnatalatru6777 is waar broer ✅
The man hu fought 4 south africa, but the Nation nver new him, i salute ROBERT MANGALISO SOBUKWE, rest in peace

These guys were incredibly brave.
I purchased his book atRobben Island, a world away, decades later, the lessons live on!!! He was a hero not nearly enough credit like Mandela. AN AMAZING MAN! GOD BLESS HIM AND HIS CO-AUTHORfor telling his story!! He makes me be a better woman in this crazy world!
What is title of the book please?
yho Im in tears. Siyabonga Mr Sobukwe
A real leader, a man who sought nothing for himself but dedicated his whole life to his people. Men like him only come along once in a lifetime IF YOUR LUCKY.
If all politicians were just 1% of this man then the world would be a much better place.
It's a travesty that Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe is not more well known, especially by all South Africans. He should be held in higher regard even than Nelson Mandela.
fully agree
Even the ANC government still banned him
@@mkanyisihlalukana6760 why did they ban him?
Even this our government is still banning him we want to hear his Voice
Yes indeed Madiba compromise to much and today we sit with the fallout , poverty, inaquality at a very high rate, cause the weatlh is Inthe hands of minority ueropeans.
Madiba ensure their comfy, luxurious, lavish lifestyle s in this day and time.
It is not surprising that, when the triumph has been finally achieved, there would always be unsung heroes. and the story of Robert Sobukwe endorses that. But, for those who are concerned about their own history, the legacy of Robert Sobukwe lives on. This was was really a life well lived! RIP Sir!
To a last speech Mandela delivered, in parliament, he mentioned Robert Sobukwe, and in many interviews, asked about his jail life, he would talk about Sobukwe. I would like to believe that if Sobukwe lived to today, he would appreciate that we compare him to Mandela or Mandela to him.
True leadership, he was such a treath to the regime, that they separated him from other prisoners.
R.Mangaliso Sobukwe is one of my revolutionary heros.
Read about him in my English book(India),,really proud of every leader of Africa!!!
God bless Africa!!
My Brother Sobuukwe Steve Biko the many who have & continue to suffer & die know that we must dare to struggle/fight ,Dare to WIN!!!Amandla Iswelethu!!!Medase'Asante Sana!Tears I my eyes & heart!!!No justice NO PEACE!!!

And thank you mr Progrund for keeping robert story relevant till today. With your notes, letters annd books ahbout sobukwe. Thank you
the only man who has mastered the true meaning of black struggled, remember Africa, remember sobukwe.
There was also Luthuli and still Prince Buthelezi. There are others too and not only African. Important things are always difficult.
That's not true. Didn't Steve Biko fight for the rights of non whites ,That's why he was killed
L:eaders like Sobhukwe come once in a lifetime. Let us always remember
A white man is ensuring that we remember this phenomenal Soul, while the ANC wants us to forget... Chris Hani, Robert Sobokwe, Sisulu, and Steve Biko and many more (out of the spotlight) were for us and the ANC against us and still are.

We are highly inspired by you,Jambase! We will continue conscientizing our children from hence forth without fear of dying, just as you did.All of us, the human race, like dust, will rise again.Afrika is not yet Free. And this ugly state of affairs is what compels us to struggle until we realise the dream of a united Azania🖐🏾
You did your part, you are a Hero, live from Zambia.

Thanks for sharing, We were robbed a leader who remains a hero. We were sold the myth of Mandela of peace preaching in the expense of lives our real heros and Mangaliso Sobukwe remains one. We barely hear about him and for parliament to have a clause just for him, He was more powerful than all apartheid masters combined.
Great Leader indeed, may his soul rest in Peace.
Truely enjoyed that. Another great man lost to history
Izwe loobawo. Inyani yona yinyani. RIP Prof, soze sikuphoxe. I just realised that we Africans ourselves are not yet ready for Africanism.
I like the fact that all quotes about Sobukwe uses "K" for Afrika not "C".
What is the significance of the K in the spelling of Africa?
You would agree with me that Dhlamini is different from Dlamini. The black consciousness movement of Steve Biko and Don Mattera believed Afrika was a proper representation of the continent and it's people across all it's languages.
Phonetically "Afrika/Africa" sounds very European to me, and is believed to have Roman imperial origins, spelling it with a "k" instead of "c" doesn't make it any less European than it is. The additional "h" in Dhlamini serves to soften the pronunciation in the Swazi language as opposed to a harder pronunciation of Dlamini in the Zulu language. In Afrikaans, Africa is spelled with a "k" and pronounced differently, so I don't get the obsession with how Africa is spelled in English.
The significance of Afrika being spelt with a k and not a c is that some South African languages don't even have the letter c, I think Sepedi, Tswana and Sesotho. The linguists will correct me. In the reamaining South African languages that do have c and k, the sound of c and k are not the same and hence the the replacement of c with k. I would have though that this would be obvious to someone with a surname like Nkosi. I'm sure Nkosi and Ncosi aren't pronounced the same in your language as well.
Correct, and where it is used it's not pronouced the same
Even martin luther king visited him after his release
This are our Leaders .We need our South africa back
sobokwe can be best described as simply the best and rated as second to none
Impeccable character of a man... Thank you Nadia!

African's greatest, educated, humble, intelligent, courageous, fearless passionate and with deep conviction of what a human being is.He was not a racist! Personally I feel he was the greatest South African black leader too difficult to forget by true Africans like me.Truly he is no more, nevertheless his spirit did not go with him but still lingers on among us looking for the correct route to spring out again maybe through Julius Malema and others. Big, Bob, rest in peace but the struggle continues for the rest of us still living. I am crying everytime i watch diis i see SA political leaders now and i compare them but i see no match guys

Such leaders are needed today especially after #FEESMUSTFALL exercise we experienced in the past two weeks in South Africa. What can we do to reclaim such leaders who were true leaders..he once said, "true leadership demands complete subjugation of self, absolute honest... selfless... integrity... fearlessness.... and above all, a consuming true love for ones people" his legacy will live on. We will always salute you Mangaliso Robert Sobukwe at Redikopantsitse Trading & Projects without your contribution, we could not be where we are. SALUTE QHAWE LAMAQHAWE!!!!!
I don't know how I missed this. But so far I like It. This Is going to my playlist.
Thank you for your information . He was one of true leaders of our time🙏

It is unfortunate that Sobukwe Clause remain Law even in eternity, the current Gorvenment also fear his ideas which will expose the Historical distorttions they made about who is a Real Revolutionary, except for "The Prof" others such as Onkgopotse Mothibi Tiro, Tsietsi Mashinini, Uncle Zeph Lekoane Mothopeng, and more other African True Warriors. Robert Sobukwe should be celebrated, also Chris Hani not Mandela
HE WAS A GREAT GIANT INDEED I WISH I COULD WALK AND FOLLOW HIS FOOT STEPS IZWE LETHU.
If South Africa is for us all, why the heroes who fought for freedom are never mentioned if they are not ANC?, is it ANC people only who have to be mentioned as freedom fighters?. We have to acknowlage all our South African heroes even if they are not ANC comrades.
Ask your grandmother PAC military wing was powerful apla ....every stay_away was mobilized by them not Mk... All Mk did was sing in exile ...and Mandela took the bargaining by fw... Codes a .....apla army are still in prison ...know your history ......
Robert sobukwe suffered. I don't think there is anyone that suffered in roben Island. Being solitary confinement and guarded by vicious dogs when other prisoners are guarded by warm bodies. And he rerily mentioned or recognized. Madimo ke yena a tsebago
If Judad did not betrayed Jesu christ and if sobukwe and Mandela had lived what could have happened?
this is the real hero of africa among others...robert sobukwe...
One of less credited heroes
I guess that's why Mandela understood this man really well❤
As a Grade 6 learner attending a Convent in 1966 I was made to believe that South Africa, my Africa, would be named Azania ... why has this never materialised, I have often asked myself?
Sounds like that was a convent for satanists..
What I love about this man, is that he had courage and heart ♥

What happened to PAC is sad :/ Sobukwe was the greatest, Mandela doesn't even come close. This ma was a serious threat.
That Mandela does not come close is wholly incorrect. In his own words, Mandela said that, "The apartheid regime never wanted I and Sobukwe close to each other, and where it would happen that we come close, we would discuss and I believe if Sobukwe lived today, he would have joined African National Congress." Don't compare them please, it is a serious mistake.

Sobokwe broke out from the And baba. Y would he go back wen he never believed in compensating with the oppresser unless they saw us as equal to them???

This was a great man indeed and a leader......
Respect
The only man with a clause kikikiki the apartheid government implemented a clause specifically for him, the most feared man during the struggle. He had his own house in Robben Island in fear that he might influence others.
What a great Man.
None a leader is Saint even Sobokwe as much as we claimed to be the greater compared to Mandela delivered no freedom b4 he died. All these leaders play their roles. Mandela deserve every beat of credit given to him. No leaeder in Sa come close to what he did and risked. Mandela was not spreading Propaganda against anyone but fighting for liberation of this country with all those around him. So people stop taking issues to an individual as if he was leading blind people. He never went around and autlawed other political leaders instead he galvanized everyone to be part moving forward. There is a lot of leaders in SA that lost their lives in the struggle. They were not sold by Mandela. Mandela answered all these questions when he had his full faculties and the whole globe quizzed him about his decisions and belief. He refused to take any credit and put it straight he was part of a collective. Now stop it he cannot answer to u again. I would have said my say about my leader Sobukhwe I just have to put this out of the way it does not sit well with me.
I did history until grade 9 but I don't remember being taught about Mr Mangaliso Sebukwe. I never had interest in history because they were busy feeding me Russian history, the whole year I was reading about Hitler. Our educational system is literally failing us.
In codeswitching2020 we teach school content using indigenous languages.💝
