Yet another solid video, Adam! You've mentioned this point a few times in other videos but I think it didn't get stress in this one: Time/Commitment. As you know well, when well cared for a lot of animals have long lifespans. I've seen so many people taken on pets without considering how long they live. It's odd to think that my mammals (cats and dogs, 13 to 15 y/o) are some my shortest lived pets.
Definitely looking forward to being able to be watching movies with my new ball python, Loki. Right now he’s still settling in though (he ate his first meal at home right on schedule last night), so I’m trying to be patient for his sake :)
when I was 14 in 1998 I got my first iguana, he got huge. i'v had monitors, tegus and water dragons . In 2008 my daughter was born and I gave all my lizards away. after 15 years my ex left and I had the house to myself. I knew from my past that if i was going to get back into lizards I only wanted agamids. I found a water dragon on craigslist it looked like it was dying .the people who had her said they had her for 3 years . she's the size of a baby. I can't exlpain how happy it made me to take care of her. I got another water dragon and a sailfin dragon. they have a huge space in my garage with a t5 and a window with sunligh.t I put a rubber screen in front of the window so they won't rub there frace I have basking lights everywere. I have a lemon tree , avacado tree ,kiwi vine and a blueberry bush for them to climb on. it feels's like the tropics in threre. They have 8 feet of water. They are the perfect reptiles for me. They brought so much happiness to my life when I needed it most. I swear they mean more to me than silver and gold..
I think another thing to consider I are emergencies in general. One reason I don’t want animals that are difficult to handle is that I live somewhere I may need to evacuate due to fires. I don’t want to have to chase around an animal when we’re trying to evacuate. I just wanna grab it, put it in the bin, grab the supplies, and GO!
Me having a Blue Tongue Skink in the dryer parts of Arizona. 👀 It is definitely harder, I have to mist the enclosure down three times a day. Luckily i have two people locally that also own Blue Tongue Skinks, so I can have them take care of my boy when I'm gone.
Adam encouraged me to finally get one !!!!!! I’ve learned that having some foil on top of the screen cover if you have one, it might not be pretty but it helps maintain the humidity for me pretty well. I live in the desert too(west Texas)hopefully this little life hack comes in handy
I know too many people that will just go out and by a pet on a whim, without thinking about it properly. Meanwhile I've been thinking about get a pet for a few years and all these things u have mentioned have ran through my mind and I still don't have one yet lol.
Hey adam! Would you consider doing a Madagascar snake conglomerate video? Like go over dumerils boa, Madagascar ground boa, Madagascar tree boa, and Madagascar giant hognose all in a single video. Seems like madagascar has some awesome snake diversity! And there is an astounding lack of video on the latter three species.
when it comes to humidity here its a lot easier to have reptiles that need high humidity. its on average 80/85% here in the netherlands. but it does get pretty cold in the winter.
Hey! So I commented on your video a little bit ago, and you sent me a link to the video on how to convince your parents to get you a reptile. My parents said yes, and how I’m working on saving up a little more, cause I really want a bearded dragon. My birthday just passed and I got a really good amount of money, and of course I’m very thankful for my family, cause I got $300 total. What I’m trying to say, is thank you for making that video, it really helped me out, and now, I’m getting a male bearded dragon, and I’m naming him Titan

Wickens Wicked Reptiles awesome!!! Sorry I was so excited I finally figured out how to work that patron thing so I’m so excited. Haha but so excited!!! I watch your videos like at least twice a day haha
I love that you took the time to really dig deep and talk about all the little things that pop up when it comes to reptiles. I was a little the same when I first got into reptiles. I knew I wanted a lizard, and flip-flopped between leopard gecko or bearded dragon for a month. And because I lived with roommates and only had the space on top of my dresser to house whatever reptile I decided on, I went with leopard gecko. Then, once I got my own place 1 gecko turned into 3 and I got a shelving unit to put their tanks on. Then I decided I wanted a snake. So I asked around on different snake and reptile groups on a good starter snake and of course got ball pythons and cornsnakes as answers. I didn't want to "settle" for a "basic" snake that everyone and their brother had. So, just like you mentioned, I came up with a list. Top spot was a bullsnake. Unfortunately, they aren't very popular in my state, and there weren't any at our local reptile expo. So went to my #2 pick, which was a Mexican Black Kingsnake. Again, not a lot of local breeders. So now I was down to my #3 which was a ball python. Which, no surprise, half (if not more) of the expo was full of ball pythons of every color and pattern morph you could think of. Found one that I absolutely fell in love with and brought him home. Now I have 2 balls, 2 bulls, a Cali King, AND... a cornsnake. Yup. I found a cornsnake I fell in love with and got him. lol.
When I got my first apartment, out power was janky. I remember one winter so thankful I had heat packs! During the day I spent hours wearing a hoodie with my dwarf boa and 2 hatchling in bags stuffed in my hoodie to help keep them warm. Things happen. Stay prepared!
I got my coastal carpet python 2 weeks ago or so, and she still hasn't eaten, seems fine other than that, but I never even thought of the humidity! I'm misting it down all the time! We finally got a fogger for the cage so it should be good now
This is such a good vid. Not just for reptiles but really any animals. Do the research, be realistic about if you can give them the care they need, and go from there.
UVB / UV A-B bulbs are relatively inexpensive and range from $25. - $40. each (depending on the brand/wattage) here in NYC. Online - and outside Manhattan they’re less expensive. One doesn’t need an expensive UV meter if you change the bulbs regularly every 6 - 8 months and keep accurate track. The bulbs and fixtures are usually cheaper at “big box” pet stores like PetCo & Pet Smart, etc. and are virtually always in stock.
Our Dumerils hasn't been pooping much this year. So I took him to the vet. X-rays, blood work, 3 enemas, soaking in a tub, etc - $720 (US). And a check up in two weeks for even more $. Some vets don't want to deal with a 7 1/2 foot snake. Years ago we lost heat in January - power was knocked out which put our gas furnace off line. So I put our Dumerils in a pillowcase, put him on my lap, and then wrapped myself in a sleeping bag for the night.
I took cate of my friend’s geckos a few times each summer a few years in a row. My cat is 8 now but when I inevitably help him along in his sunset years. A leachie is on my radar. 😍😍😍
I agree with the climate in which you live in, where I live it’s constantly like 70-80% humidity and I feel like if I wanted to keep say a bearded dragon or a leopard gecko it would difficult, possible, but a bit of a challenge
I checked to make sure there was at least one accessible vet with experience treating reptiles before I even considered going any further with deciding which one I'd want. There are a few. If it weren't for some fairly restrictive state laws regarding keeping any native species, I'd have looked for one of the several colubrid species from the area since the climate in the enclosure would have been almost a no-brainer. The reptile enclosure will be in my room. That means I don't want the necessary enclosure climate seriously fighting with what I maintain for myself. I have room for a reasonably decent sized enclosure 4 feet long 3-4 feet deep and as tall as needed. If I wanted to fight the room climate, I could house an arboreal snake without much issue. As it is, we get back to the oft mentioned Dumeril's boa. While not the only reptile I'd like or hope to keep at some point, given my current situation, that's the best snake for me taking into account the other criteria. Besides, they are really neat snakes.
I want something that's: Handleable, smallish 3-5 feet, something that looks really cool (in my opinion), and doesn't need a lot of large prey, and doesn't need high humidity or heat, or extreme cold. I'm not really looking into aquatics right now though. What I have my eyes set on right now: Mexican black king snake, western hognose (sable), tricolor hognose, and I'm thinking about terrestrial geckos (mainly looking at fat tails, but haven't made up my mind) My thing is that I need to look into where I can get all the stuff for the snake, and where I can get the actual reptile, since I really don't want to go to petsmart or Petco for this kind of thing. Right now, I'm definitely going to need to save up, but I'm not going to get any of this right now, I'm saving up for something else.
To be honest with you, I feel like it all depends on how much effort the owner wants to put in. I love chameleons and because of that. I made sure to build a 65 gal tank that was bio active, plenty of branches, built in water fall, and a fogger just for one veiled!!!!! Btw Adam I love you channel and your videos, you’ve helped me learn so much and shown me animals that I otherwise would’ve thought wouldn’t be great pets
Do you know anything about the Mozambique rain frog (breviceps) ? I saw some online and they look so cute. Japanese and Koreans have them but I don't see much english info about them , not many english world keepers too.
Luckily where I live there is quite a bit of humidity. Upwards of 90-100°. The good thing is my beardys lights get rid of most of the humidity for him!
i just like easy, cute, and handlable. but I'm also just starting. i live in vegas with 30% humidity and i just spray my pvc and mulch down. it works great.
Hey you compare the bearded dragon to a blue tongue skink and you never compare a ackie monitor to a bearbed dragon and a blue tongue skink. Wonder what would be your prefered one, easy to care etc...
Great video! I've been in this mode myself. I want something diurnal, easy to feed and not often like once a week so obviously snake. A small to medium size would be best as well.
For me propably boa imerator. I adore beardiea and leopard gekkos too but if I could own only one reptile there is not better for me than BCI. Just overall awesomness, my BCI is my best friend 🐍💙
You are awsome love your videos but I have to say it. Its hygrometer it is used to measure humidity a hydrometer is used for measuring the relative density of liquids based on the concept of buoyancy.
Great video!! Can I get some more advice from you? My hubbs and I are looking into getting a salifin within the next year or so, and we were going to make it a paludarium (?) with archer fish. Do you think the archer fish and the dragon would be able to be in the same enclosure?
Hi! Do you know Philippe Gillet? (the herpetologist not the criminal XD), I'm now volonteering at his facility, and now has the possibility to mess with a lot of species including crocodilians, spiders, even venomous reptiles! He owns more than 400 reptiles!
So have you ever looked into Gargoyle geckos, or do you lump them in with cresties most of the time on your vids? (I say lump them in, on account of them having nearly identical needs, aside from being unable to cohabitate with each other for the beginning keeper.)
Rainbow boas should require a permit to own, honestly. You mess up their humidity just once, for just a few days, and it can kill them. Where I live in the desert, even the super experienced herp guys and breeders don't bother trying with them. Yeah you can technically do it, but it's so much work, it just stops being fun. Rosy boas, on the other hand, are awesome. And easy to keep healthy. And the melanistic ones look cool af. I get way more compliments on my rosy than I ever did with my retic (when he was small enough that I could take him out) or my ball python. They're small, but they just have this _presence._ People notice them. And they're rarer, while literally everyone knows what a rainbow boa or red tailed boa or boa constrictor is. So it's cool having a snake that not everyone knows about.
The more I think about it the more I realize I may not be able to have a reptile, I can handle doing the lights and all the food, but I live in maine where it's cold and humid most of the year
Hey is there a company that can take care of your reptiles when you are away like on vacation or for an extended period. I couldn't think of any but it seemed like a cool idea.
Life expectancy is something to consider also. Do you want a chameleon or frog that on average live about 5 years or do you want a life long companion like a tortoise.
I actually found a vet that I walked in and walked out with a visit , fecal, and worm medication for my Beared dragon for 100 bucks. But before that I was paying 200 just to get seen.
If people want something they never touch or interact with, surely a Tokay gecko is the best choice. Don’t need a huge enclosure, relatively simple care requirements. You just have to be aware that they’ll have your hands at the first given opportunity.
I went and got a colony of rats, soft furred rats and mice. So I just let them reproduce...There upkeep is less than buying frozen or even live feeders. However I love them, you are oh so right about living in the desert...I do live in Arizona in the desert regions . It is very difficult to keep the humidity up, I have to work on it and will be converting to enclosures that are better at holding humidity. I love watching you and brian and billy....You all teach me so much, when I was growing up they did not know nearly as much on reptile care as they do now.
Yet another solid video, Adam!

Hi! Do you know Philippe Gillet? (the herpetologist not the criminal XD), I'm now volonteering at his facility, and now has the possibility to mess with a lot of species including crocodilians, spiders, even venomous reptiles! He owns more than 400 reptiles!
I don't know him no but sounds like a cool collection
Should I get a leo or a long tail grass
leo
Can you do a corn snake guide

Thanks to this video, I'm going to go out and get a King Cobra!
King cobras are the best beginner reptile... haha
I got my first reptile
Next month (well it’s not confirmed when but I know that’s when I’m getting the set up )
It’s a hermanns tortoise
Great video! I also love your PC setup. Maybe do a reptile and PC setup video? I'd watch for sure :)
🐢🐍🦎👾🎮🕹🖥🖥🖥
So have you ever looked into Gargoyle geckos, or do you lump them in with cresties most of the time on your vids? (I say lump them in, on account of them having nearly identical needs, aside from being unable to cohabitate with each other for the beginning keeper.)
the are both similar
Adam, Should I get a Leo or a long tail grass
leo... 100%
@@WickensWickedReptiles thanks
I am having trouble deciding between rosy boa and rainbow boa
one is small and easy, the other is neither
Could you plz do best medium sized lizards as pets around the same size as lets say bearded dragon or uromastyx
sure, I like it
Which lizard is better the blue tongue skink or the fire skink
that'd be a great video
There don’t seem to be any reptile specialty stores, much less an exotic vet in town. The best I’ve got is petsmart...
that's the tough part about some areas
I'm lucky kingsnakes are my favourite reptiles.👍🐍😃
nice!!!
I'm getting a baby blue tounge skink in about a week or so any name suggestions I'm thinking maybe Borris
How about Victor
Picklehead III
wow!!! Love that
thank you!
The more I think about it the more I realize I may not be able to have a reptile, I can handle doing the lights and all the food, but I live in maine where it's cold and humid most of the year
lots of people keep reptiles in Maine
exact process I used to pick out my Bearded Anole! Great video Adam!
Awesome! Thank you! !
Hey is there a company that can take care of your reptiles when you are away like on vacation or for an extended period. I couldn't think of any but it seemed like a cool idea.
like dog sitting but for reptiles
I like em all brand new socks and draws lol.
My first and only reptile was and is a ball python cuz they r my fave snakes and so r MBK
nice!!
can you make a video on aquatic lizards no snakes
maybe
Do u have a web footed gecko
I do not.... yet
Awww pikachu is so cute
isn't he!
@@WickensWickedReptiles yes he is 😍😍😍😍
What part of Canada do you live in?
southern Ontario
Could you talk about choosing reptiles to breed?
I'd always say pick the reptile you have a passion for
@@WickensWickedReptiles guess I'll do cresties
Life expectancy is something to consider also. Do you want a chameleon or frog that on average live about 5 years or do you want a life long companion like a tortoise.
great point!
Me: *gets leopard gecko* "BOA TIME"
hahaha yup!
We can get 3 seasons in a day in the UK
Canada is much the same
It really is like that nd sum ppl dnt take all these in consideration
for sure
Why is there a little spots on Pikachu
Nice.
Thanks!
I know what reptile i want i just can't find it or afford it. The classic problem.
for sure!
What’s the best reptile for me? One of each 😅
The 'list': 10, 15, 20...100... That's the truth lol! The list is long!
right!?
Battery power heat lamp
Or wolly shirt
I actually found a vet that I walked in and walked out with a visit , fecal, and worm medication for my Beared dragon for 100 bucks. But before that I was paying 200 just to get seen.
that's amazing!!!
If people want something they never touch or interact with, surely a Tokay gecko is the best choice. Don’t need a huge enclosure, relatively simple care requirements. You just have to be aware that they’ll have your hands at the first given opportunity.
this is true!
I love watching you and brian and billy....You all teach me so much, when I was growing up they did not know nearly as much on reptile care as they do now.
thanks for the kind words! good luck with your rodent breeding :)
