- How to make a ring - from start to finish.
I've been wanting to make this video for months. I want to show you what is the difference between handcrafted piece and mass produced jewellery, fast fashion. The slow process of deep thought and focus. Original silversmithing techniques and skills that took time and effort to learn and practice. The essence of what I love about silversmithing the most. Every piece is different and unique, there are never two the same ones. And knowing that it becomes a part of someone, their style and personality. Of someone who wears it and bonds with it.

I've never felt more at ease watching someone make jewelry
Wow, thank you so much Austin! That really means a lot and makes me happy :))
@@TheArtOfMetalsmithing it was a pleasure to see you work, even learned a thing or two. Keep up the good work!
Couldn't ask for better motivation! Thank you
right? i'm going to watch this to go to sleep so i can dream up design ideas ;-)
I know you probably will never read this, but what a simple yet elegant silver ring, I would buy that!
That's so sweet! Thank you so much :) I agree, there's beauty in simplicity
I truly have never felt more at peace then I do making rings.
Rings for me means life a never ending cycle of search for happiness.
ahh, I know what you mean! I LOVE sawing in particular, it's like a meditation for me 😍
@@TheArtOfMetalsmithing maybe some time I could show you some of my work. I've only been making rings for 3 years now. I started to make rings to raise money for animal rights. And it worked. Now some company wants to contract me in their antique stores. Lol ok
good for you bro but i swear at my self and the ring when it doesn’t go right 😭
@@frankofthefilth295hi! i would really like to make a ring with a little stone in it. i’m a beginner, do u have any recommendations? i don’t know where to start
Rings for me mean something very similar..... An ever lasting peace and order. All hail
Sauron
I took 8 semester of Metalsmithing on college.. I loved it so much. Maybe it is time to start again. I have all the tools still….
I made an account just so I could comment on how beautifully well crafted this breathtaking video is. Amazing work, the way you were able to capture the essence of using hand tools and ancient methods to create your heartwork was memorizing. Well done love!!
This is truly the most amazing comment I have ever received! Thank you so so much for such lovely words, I really appreciate your support! 💗 You have no idea how much it all means to me :)) It keeps me going and gives motivation to create more! Thank you!
I do glass work but am delving into jewelry and your videos have been super vital! So well thought out and organic and the videos themselves are pure art.... Thank you! (((((((((((
You are the sweetest, thank you so much love! 💗💗💗Glass work is really amazing and I'm sure you'll find making jewellery exciting too :))
I have lots designs and just looking into what it would take to manifest them in metals - you are a big inspiration, I love that you keep it simple... will definitely watch alot!
aww, thank you! I really appreciate it! ❤ Metal and stones truly give lots of opportunities to go creative and play with forms and designs :) You can literally make anything, all it takes is imagination, practice and tools, everything within our reach :)
This has been more informative then any of the instructional courses I have watched previously on other channels. It was clear and to the point. No talking. I love it and will always be a fan of your work!
this is the first video ive come across where it is so simple to see the step by step process of making a ring. ive been wanting to get into it for years now and this helped, so much, especially knowing that i already have some of these tools at home :)
wonderful! I'm glad you've enjoyed it and I hope this can inspire you to create ❤❤❤ Good luck!
It's pretty nice work space you have. Thanks for sharing
Well you just inspired me to start a new hobby!
Omg I love this video. It's so soothing.
Thank you so much, Sunny! 💕 I need to make more videos like this 💕
A simple but essentially complex work. Thank you.
My mom got me a metalsmithing kit for my birthday, like I asked for, and we both want to learn how to use it… I definitely need more detail than this video, but it was beautiful to watch and got me so excited to start!
Oh this isn't the best tutorial, it was one of my very first videos. Please check out this one, hopefully it will be more detailed and easier to follow: ua-cam.com/video/kFDSynljVDw/v-deo.htmlsi=1a-BnBJyE3nnNRz5

Great video to watch the art of ring making, but you tell us nothing about supplies you use of any how to do anything.but it was nice watching you
Oh no, god forbid you have to do some RESEARCH
She does in this video but she’s got multiple videos on her channel with step by step guide in the best products to use 😊

Amazing video and amazing channel and amazing job friend 😀😎👍🔥❤
thank you so much for your lovely comment! Made my day 😀😀😀
Had to subscribe. Loved the video!!
thanks a lot for your process, love the ring and the video itslef. Now I really want to try doing one
That's a great foundation for what ever you can imagine. If I may suggest , for the hammered part I would not use a ballpean hammer, I suggest a planishing hammer, it gives a bright indention , that creates contrast. I just made one . Put side by side , night and day. GREAT foundation. Good job 👍
I love this! Thanks so much for the great tip, next time I will try to do it :) And thanks so much for watching!
In the next episode you'll see how to make engravings inside the ring, the one after will feature creating your own Ring of Power, with the climactic ending taking place on a little field trip to Mordor for some special, "One" of a kind creation. Stay tuned!
hahaha, spoiler alert! Spoiler alert! HOW DID YOU KNOW!! No spoilers, I say! :D

Love your work and channel 💗
thank you so much !! :)))
Your videos are really good & instructional. A joy to watch..so good to see you enjoy your work & your professional approach..
I was horrified earlier watching 2 women making jewellery, using a torch with long hair flowing all over the place.
My concentration was on whether they were going to go up in flames..I will never watch them again!..
Oh no... hair and fire is a recipe for a disaster! And it only takes a split second. I can totally see why you felt horrified. I've had my fair share of (unnecessary)accidents, but my hair is always up in a pony tail or a bun, I'm not taking any risks here haha :)
Super happy you enjoy my content and videos, I appreciate your comments a lot 🥰

This will be my first project from scratch. Several of them, in several sizes. It should be good practice, and show me what sizes sell best.
excellent! Good luck
Can i ask you what's the product u used and how did u make it that way ( 1:25 )
What is your preference on solder? Which one do you recommend using for a 16 gauge gold filled ring? I’m just soldering the one joint together. But I see in your video you used hard ?
Hard gold solder is the purest and will look most like the gold over time.
That was beautifully shot, really enjoying learning from you ,Thanks!
aw thank you! I'm really happy to hear that :)) Really wanted to show the whole process, kind of from my own perspective, hence all the close ups :) It's mostly what I see when I look at pieces and tools in my hands. I'm glad you can learn something here, are you teaching yourself to make jewellery too?
You are good, really good your video make me motivate in your working smith ,one thing may i know how the flux is prepare. is it expensive, i like to try soldering at home myself.
The white bowl is unglazed in the middle, this makes it a bit rough when fired in the kiln. So moving the cone across the surface fakes off small particles of borax that are held in suspension in the water. It is probably the cheapest way of fluxing. Stay safe...Steve...

How did you get the length from the ring sizes to cut? Also what gauge is good to use for general ring making?
Hi, great stuff! I'm currently trying to learn silversmithing, Can you briefly explain why you have to anneal, quench and pickle? what is their purpose?
Hi, thank you for your comment! :)
- To shape a ring you might need to soften the metal (if it's a thick piece of wire), that's called annealing. Also, metal work hardens while working, so it's good to soften it (anneal). It's because hardened metal can break. This is a helpful quote: "Annealing silver is the process of heating the silver to make it soft enough to work with. You may have to anneal the silver several times during the making of a piece of jewellery, because working with the silver makes it hard again"
- you are quenching the metal after annealing to keep it in an annealed state. Also after soldering to cool it down, before putting in the pickling solution.
- pickle is used to clean the metal, especially after soldering, "to remove baked on flux and oxides that have formed on the metal"
Hope that helps! :)
@@TheArtOfMetalsmithing thank you so so much!! please keep uploading videos! i'm learning alot :)
That's wonderful! I definitely will xx
Hi. Does quenching necessary for making ring in mold and what is that boiling fluid?@@TheArtOfMetalsmithing
such a great video, thank you for making. I have a question, the video quality of your video is amazing.
Can you please tell me...
a) what type of camera/lens you used to create this video.
b) did you use any external lighting?
Could you do this with platinum also?
Such a calming video. Beautiful craftsmanship. Thank you for sharing it with us. What is the pestle mortar kind of thing you used for the flux? Is that whole thing flux and adding water dissolves a little at a time? What is it called?
Thank you so much.
Thank you so much for you lovely comment! :) That is borax cone that you use with this small dish to create flux - by adding water and moving around :)
@@TheArtOfMetalsmithing Thank you very much for that. I cannot stop watching your videos :)
@@copperbeech61Me too...
Can I make a signet ring with this stuff?
Hello, I’ve been interested in making silver jewelry. And I’m trying to learn as much as possible online before actually getting my hands on it. I have a question....in this video, after you cut the silver to the size you want...there was an “anneal” step where you heated the metal with the torch, quenched it, and then put it in the pickle crockpot. My question is...why to do this step? Is it because heating it and then putting it in the pickle helps to make the metal softer for bending? Also...what is the difference between the solution used in the glass bowl where you quench it and the solution that is used in the crockpot? Thanks so much!
Putting it in the crockpot is how to clean the oxidization off the silver. The heating with the touch does the softening. The glass bowl has bicarbonate of soda and water mix which is to stop the slightly acid effect of the pickle. As a self-learner too, may I recommend getting your hands on all books you can on silver jewellery making, there are so many. It can help so much to see it written down and the photos they use. Some great tutors have written some fantastic books. Use them if you can. I think I got that all right...Steve...
@@stephencoster9532 Thanks so much for all of advice!! I’ll definitely check out some books too!
I love all your videos. Started off wire wrapping jewellery.... but would love to get into metalsmithing. What are some basic tools to start with if I were to go into metalsmithing?
you're so amazing! i'm speechless how excellent is the work you do! keep goin'!!! 😘😘
Michał, thank you so so much, no words how much I appreciate it! :))))
Hypnotizing video!
thanks my love! I'm really happy how it all turned out. Well, with one actually nothing is difficult anymore to be honest but we will get to hard parts in next video as I will be progressing with the pieces I show :) With this one though, maybe closing the ring as the wire is really hard for me (and my little hands!) even after annealing haha
working with metals, they are so perfect in and of themselves. Though it takes time to let the material convey itself to you, through mistakes. There isn't much difficulty in learning from mistakes but there is work.
completely agree! :) I find working with metals really rewarding.
What metals do I need to get started? I want to try a simple approach. I hear Nordic gold is good? Any suggestions?
I'm sorry, never heard of "Nordic gold", but now I'm curious to see what it is :) As for metals, it depends on what you'd like to start with, silver is much easier to work with, but it's more expensive, than brass for example or copper. I enjoy working with brass, it's a fun metal and looks beautiful
What type of hammer does she use when texturing the outside and sides of the ring?
a hide mallet i think
@@nadiayusuf6934 Hide will not mark the ring to make it a 'Hammered' ring, the black hammer is a metal hammer!
I just started making some beaded rings yesterday watching your videos. They’re so helping and easy to follow. 🤩
I have a doubt about if I should use the polishing attachments only on the soldered joint and then put the rings in the tumbler or if I should polish the whole ring with the attachments and the tumbler too 😫
Wish I knew the names of everything you use is so can buy and do this myself at home
Beautiful video! I would like to try to make a ring, but dont have money to buy all of the equippment. Do you have any advice on what the most necessary tools are to make a really simple ring, even though it may not look as beautiful and finished as this one?
What do you put in your quench bowl?
Bi-carb and water
Would the process be the same with white gold?
sorry if that’s a stupid question lol
Similar in terms of the basic process, but also very different 😀 white gold is a very precious metal, has different properties and handling it will be different. I never worked with it, so I won't be able to tell any details though, sorry!
Stardust Mine Jewellery okay thank you !
The only stupid question is the one you don't ask, it would be the same with white gold. Steve...
i love the way you make your videos =) continue
ah, thank you! ❤️
What hammer was used to create the texture?
A metal ball-pean hammer.
Thanks for the video. What type of brush are you using in your dremel to polish? I'm confused at all the different types there are.
Thank you for watching! :) I'm most often using 3m abrasive bristle discs. They are really great (especially that I mostly work with smaller pieces, so they work fine for me)
Another awesome video 😊 I just wanted to ask, what is the purpose of the tumbler to polish if you have already polished it with the handheld one?
A book has just come out by Stephen M goldsmith, it is wonderful, yes I'm reading it. He says for tumbling, put the water, I use pure water, no calcium, in the drum with the shot, he takes out, OK does not put in the pins, he says their sharp ends mark the work. Add 1 teaspoon of 'Barrel Bright' tumble for 4 hrs, clean everything repeat, yes another 4 hrs, but what a difference. I can see why he is paid a lot of money by the top people to polish their precious metals, he is the best!!! Stay safe...
You make it look so easy! Lol I love your videos. My rings keep getting so dark with fire scale no matter how quickly I try to go. Your ring stayed so silver through the whole soldering process. Any idea what I am doing wrong? Thank you!
I truly LOVE your videos!
How do you ensure that the ring ends up the size you wanted since sometimes it stretches on the mandrel? I guess rawhide won’t stretch…
Let's see if I can still do this;- Use the ring gauge to read what size you need. measure the diameter from the gauge, (Or use a chart in a book.) Add the thickness of the metal, multiply by 3.14 phy. That gives you the length. Using a metal hammer will thin the ring, the metal has to go somewhere so it gets longer. Bigger ring, a rawhide mallet does not do this, nor does plastic, in its various forms. The 'Harder' the solder the more pure silver it contains, hard solder has nearly the same as sterling silver, so use hard where you can. Use a polished hammer, no dents in it is best as these will transfer to the silver. A 'clean' hammered ring just looks better. I think I got that right, stay safe...Steve...
Please could you make a video step by step talking us through it x
I have been watching all of your videos and find them so incredibly helpful. I just got a ton of equipment to start learning to silversmith.
However I am having such a hard time soldering.
I am using solder paste, I am also flux with the borax cone, i make sure the joints are together, flux, heat up the piece and add the solder but it doesnt stick. It just beads up and rolls off. I've tried without the flux since the paste already has it just to experiment and still.
I am not sure what else to do, I've watched videos, read trouble shooting and still no luck. Any advice? Or would you perhaps do a soldering video with trouble shooting?
Try using gel flux from Rio Grande. The solder sticks where you put it and doesn't roll away.
See if I can remember, the joint must be very clean, any grease, like, off your fingers will mess it up, use something like wet & dry paper. You may not be using a hot enough torch, add more gas. I hope that helps. Steve...
Hey, do you use soft, half hard or hard wire? Thanks💞
Most jewellers use soft, but Basia anealled it as well.

is the hammering at the end just to give it a "Rough" look? If you were going for more of a smooth look then would you skip the hammering at the end?
Yes, I hammered a lot to achieve that rough look, for the smooth look you'd definitely skip that stage! :)) Hope that helps :)
Your awesome which gauge is that?& what shape wire?
Thanks! :) Half round wire, if I remember correctly, it was 3mm x 2mm
what's this white paste you put in the metal before soldering?
that's flux! :) You need it for the solder to flow. You will use borax cone and dish for example, add some water and create a paste, then apply where you want to solder. Check out my other videos, where I show a bit more :)
@@TheArtOfMetalsmithing Thank you for answering my questions! You are lovely!!
My pleasure, ask away if you have any more questions, I'd be happy to help
this is so beautiful!what gauge wire did you use in this and was it sterling silver?
3mm x 2mm D half-round wire, and yes stirling.
Could this method work with platinum?
I'm sorry, I have no experience with platinum, so I won't be able to answer for sure
I can’t find who you said to look up to buy the ring template .. gnomeow? I can’t find him again.
Does this method also work with gold?
It depends on which method you have in mind, but if you mean the soldering, then yes, I believe so! Just with gold solder of course!
Once you measure your ring size, how can one guarantee they cut the right length of wire?
How do you make the flux?
Brilliant !
Thank you!! Yes, the song is amazing, I love it too
That's a lot of fancy equipment
Hi Basia, I absolutely love your channel and you motivated me to get back to jewellery making :) I would like to ask what size of wire did you use for this ring, which gauge? Thank you so much for everything you do
Hiya, if I had to guess I would say 3mm x 1.5mm D shape wire. I'm sorry I don't know what that is in gauge. Stay safe...Steve...
Sorry Basia thinks it was 3mm x 2mm, and she thinks that is gauge 12
What gauge wire was this? 7?
3mm x2mm D wire, Steve...
Beautiful! What gauge half round did you use? Thanks!
Hi Renee! Thank you :)) So the wire is 3mm x 2mm, so that is I believe 12 gauge? Hope that's helpful!
What gauge is the wire?
I think it was 3mm x 2mm? I don;t remember exactly, sorry. It's a half round/D shape wire
For how long do you keep it in a pickle?? And can i use something else to hold the borax or it has to be that sombrero looking(😂😂) pot?
It's best if it's a dish like thisone, not sure if you can use something else, as I've never tried. This one provides the surface needed to create the flux paste from the boraz cone. Ileave pieces in the pickle for about 5-15 minutes, or for how long they need to be cleaned :)
The inside of the dish is an unglazed ceramic pot, therefore it is rough and grinds off tiny particles of borax.
Excellent. Thank you so much for posting this. What type of flux did u use and what type of attachment did you have on the Dremel when polishing?
Borax, and a 3M finger wheel
I know this is really old but what gauge wire did you use
aw man haha :) Hmm, I think it was D-shape wire and it was 2mm x 3mm? Something around these dimensions
@@TheArtOfMetalsmithing awesome tysm
What gauge wire is this?
How much is something like this worth?
The music drives me insane
I know... my original music got removed, so I had to add something from the library and the choices were limited 😭 I'll check if there are some new tunes available now, to swap it for something better
How do you do the flux? borax and water?
yes, exactly. I use borax cone, add some water and make a paste in the dish :)
OMG!! Do you know where I can find the borax cone? thanks :) I love this video btw. I saw your workbench and im going to do the same, and recomendations?
I'll have a look, where are you based? Thanks so much! I'm very happy with this little bench and it allows lots of customisation (attaching tools etc). It's not big but should be enough in the beginning. It's from Ikea, just a simple kitchen trolley (smaller one, called BEKVÄM but if you have more budget, I would go for FÖRHÖJA, much better!)
Im in amsterdam! :D
Hmm, then I would recommend checking Amazon and Ebay and even more, your local jeweller's shop (also online). Unfortunately I won't be able to help because of the launguage but I'm sure you will be able to find something without problems! Good luck :)
