Stephen Lee got banned in 2012, found guilty for match fixing. He is thought to have influenced the result of snooker matches for snooker bets.
He played against Stephen Hendry and this first frame was questionable, to say the least.

11 minutes in - Stephen Lee spent ages trying to work out how the hell to convincingly fail to take advantage of a red over the pocket, all the others lined up perfectly, and pink and black on their spots. Hendry played like a man with no arms! What match were you watching? He missed several easy balls for someone of his quality and the red ended up woefully short on what should have been gimme safety shots. I see absolutlely no evidence that this was a “fixed frame” thrown by Lee. If anything Hendry played the worse shots. I think Lee was fitted up by the snooker authorities because his face didn’t fit, or maybe he was too fat for the image of the game.

The pros are better at detecting suspicious choices and shots than you or I, plus they combine it with weird betting activity. Despite all that, people should realize that just because someone is 'found guilty' does not mean they are guilty. We are not omniscient gods, and the courts can always make mistakes. As very unlikely as that is. A lot of people treat the courts like some kind of verdict from God himself. Like if someone is found guilty they are 100% guilty and if found innocent 100% innocent.

Although bets were made on an opponent, they were regarded as an insurance policy against losing i.e. the bet on the opponent winning would have yielded far less money than actually winning it himself. Of course it must be outlawed because it's too difficult to police, but it's easy to see how a player can justify it so long as a winning bet would yield far less than winning the game.

He ( LEE ) didn't dare lay hendry in a snooker for fear of being presented with a reasonably easy finish which he may very well have perceived as being far to obvious to miss . It doesn't matter, because in this level of betting, everyone bets alot, and Henry was definitely favourite right?! So it's very natural that the majority would bet for Hendry, making it betting for Lee to lose...? So either way, it's still natural betting, regardless of he did match fixing or not... Unless there are evidences like the tape which John Higgins was involved... If the bet was live and started after or when the game was ongoing, then there's no way he could've suddenly chose to lose (because he wouldn't have known and it wouldn't affect the match anyway)... If the bet was made before it, then it also won't matter, since the majority would vote for Hendry anyway, unless, a big guy who initially supported Lee changed side to Hendry's, which I don't think was possible either, normally you can't cancel your bet right? Half way through the first game of 17, neither player at his best. Some of Hendrie's shots weren't very well received by the commentators. But they didn't suspect any match fixing at that point. Let's see how the frame evolves.

I suspect that the WPBSA were alerted about the betting patterns and had a word with Hendry to play badly. Same with Peter Francisco's match when Jimmy White played appallingly but still won 10-2, just as the betting predicted.
