Power Carving a Briar Pipe

- My first attempt at carving a pipe! It starts out a bit questionable… but develops into a piece I’m quite happy with. Even if you’re not into pipes, you might enjoy the art, or the process of power carving.
I used a wide variety of bits for my rotary tool (I’d provide the brand name, but I don’t really like it enough to recommend it, or not) from 150 grit diamond bits (inexpensive) to some nice carbide burs. It was a learning process for me, so I can begin my next briar pipe carving with more confidence!
November 10th is the birthday of my beloved Marine Corps! Born on November 10, 1775, in a popular bar… yep we have those bragging rights… Tun Tavern in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. So, Happy Birthday, Marines! Be smart and safe when you celebrate, and don’t compromise yourself or others.
Thank you Glenda and George Graves! Wow, do I love that Marine Corps Emblem art you made and sent me. Outstanding.
Sticking with the Marine Corps theme this week, a leadership principle we’re all taught is to know yourself and seek self-improvement. This is something we can all apply to our lives by just a small amount of self-evaluation followed by a plan of attack.
As a Christian, I need a lot of improvement. I need to set a better example in my personal walk, inward and outward. The food for thought this week is what I believe God’s answer is to that need:
Psalm 119:9-11
9 Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed thereto according to the word.
10 With my whole heart have I sought thee: O let me not wander from thy commandments.
11 Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.
We need to fix what’s’ in our hearts before we can fix anything else. Memorize scripture so you have it to fall back on and refer to in your daily walk. This plan of attack, I say to myself first, and share with you.

As we speak my grandson is going thru the crushable to end Saturday morning at 6am parris island. He will graduate on the 19. We are very proud to be a grandparent of a future marine as of Saturday 6am
I think auto-correct got you. I think you meant crucible.
Outstanding, Ronnie! I know you must be vary proud indeed! You're going to see some amazing changes in your grandson the next time you're together. Congrats to you and your new Marine! Semper Fidelis
My best to your son. The crucible is a tough event and will definitely tell what your son is made of as a Marine. If he got this far in basic, he should do ok during those 54 hours of hell at PI.
Marines; the toughest job you’ll ever love. If I could, I do it all over again.

Beautiful piece.👌Happy Birthday US Marine Corps.from an English friend, another great video. Please say Hi to Susan 💖
Hi to you
Thank you very much! Always great to hear from England!
Any pipe-smoking Marine would likely be pleased and proud to add that pipe to his collection.
Thanks so much!
I always read the scriptures you put on. Thank you.
You are so welcome, Bonny!
Stunning Leatherneck!... I am absolutely honored to have served with you in Battle and have you as my friend.
Thank you so much, and I appreciate that very much! The honor is mine though, as you were a leader we all looked up to. There are few true mentors in any Marine's career, ...I count you as one. Semper Fidelis, brother!
Absolutely beautiful Rod! You did a great job and tribute for the Marines 246th birthday!
Thank you very much, John, I really appreciate that!
Good Heavens, man---is there no end to your talents? A splendid-looking briar, and a terrific tribute to the Marines.
You're very kind, my friend! I appreciate it very much!
thanks for the video, great talent. now I will try to make a pipe that just looks like a pipe.
Rod your talent never disappoints. Almost makes me want to take up smoking.
LOL, well... don't do that! 😁 thank you!
Semper Fidelis! Thanks, Rod. Beautiful.
Thank you, my friend!
In the process of carving one myself, but it will be no where as beautiful as yours great work
You can do it! Enjoy the process, and thank you!
Rod you never cease to amaze me outstanding job. And I love your dedication to the Core. I see you still have all your fingers and no Band-Aids good job supper fi
Thanks very much, Tom! Yes, all digits present and accounted for... the band-aids are always on close standby though 😊
Terrific work Rod...a definite keepsake and labor of love...stay safe...press on 😎 Joe

All I can say is WOW! That’s just plain awesome. Beautiful pipe Rod. See ya soon Brother!
Thanks very much, my friend!
Rod it is another beautiful piece of craftsmanship. I love your work. God bless you and family and His peace fall upon you. Russell
Thank you very much, Russell, very much appreciated!
What a cool way to remember the birthday of the Marines. Thanks for being an inspiration for all of us to get out of our comfort zone. Thanks for sharing the Word.
Thank you, I appreciate that very much!
Very gratifying to watch and it gives me ideas as someone who doesn't own a lathe. I've tried carving on 3d printer filament ala "Hoo's Mini World". I haven't kept at it but one thing I found helpful, since I was mostly using little files to work on a piece, was to put a rag on the head of a tripod so I could rest my hand on it at whatever hight I needed but there would be space around the work piece so the tool could move freely without hitting a table or whatever. It increased the force I could apply to the strokes and kept my other hand from having to fight that force. Much better accuracy and less fatigue on my back. I have to get back to that again this winter. I also have a tree root that I want to build up some resin on and carve that in a similar fashion. God bless you for your service! ❤
Thank you very much. I also really appreciate that tip, it sounds very usable!
A true artist, and a true Marine. Thanks for sharing your artistry.
My pleasure, Jean, and thank you very much!
WOW that is so beautiful! And thank you for your service Sir! Rod that is truly a work of art.
Thank you, I appreciate that!
I smoke a pipe almost daily. I'm a little disappointed in myself for having missed this video when it was uploaded. It's truly a beautiful pipe, Mr. Humphrey.
Thank you very much, Marcel!
Fantastic job Rod! It's still dark here but your vids bring a ray of sunshine, thanks for sharing. God bless and Semper Fi.
Thank you, my friend, very kind of you to say!
Well done, Mr. Humphrey. I don't smoke anymore, but I still make Tobacco Pipes out of scrap or unwanted woods like ornamental plum, lilac, scrubby bitternut hickory, honey locust and slippery elm. It is so satisfying to see what would otherwise be thrown away show a small bit of beauty. You can buy good pipe making materials from Vermont Freehand and cheap pipe stems from Pipes and Cigars online. That is a nice pipe, indeed.
Thank you for the Psalm, here is a passage that this video brought to mind. Exodus 35:30-35 (The recognition of the Craftsmen Bezalel and Oholiab as gifted by God with skill, wisdom, and the ability to teach.)
Thank you Pete, and I appreciate the tips! I have bookmarked both sites. Nice scripture reference too!
Beautiful Absolutely Beautiful !! God Bless You Mr. Humphrey 😊
Thanks very much! 😊
Beautiful work and Briar Pipe, looks amazing! Congratulations & Happy Birthday to your beloved U.S. Marines! 👏👏👏
Thank you, I appreciate that!
Very nice pipe. This is coming from a guy that served 20 years in the navy. Keep up the good wood working.
Beautiful pipe sir and thank you for your service and sacrifice and your family ‼️‼️‼️
Nothing like an early morning carving video! Got my cat on my lap (she adores your videos, actually sits and watches the screen!) and the early sun through the windows. Hope you have a blessed week!
haha! I love that. I'm a big fan of cats, all animals really, and appreciate that mental picture very much! Give your girl a good chin scratching for me 😺
You are such a multi talented man. Seems anything made from wood and you can turn it into something beautiful. Fantastic!
Thank you so much 😀

My brother just got into pipe smoking and he served Marine Corps as well. I am going to try making a version of this. I'll have to hand carve the details, though. This one looks great, thanks for sharing!
Thanks to all our Marines for their service! Thanks Rod, for this neat project and for your service-well done.
Thank you very much!
Thank you, Friend, for sharing such another perfect project. I just ordered four of these to try to make three Christmas gifts. Well done! ❤️🙏🏻
Thank you! Nice, I'd love to see what you do with them!
Though not a Marine, the Corps is my absolute favorite branch of service! I AM a Chesty Puller fan and a WW2 enthusiasts. I remember stories from Guadalcanal and after a Nip bombardment, the smell of Chesty's pipe and his "everything is gonna be ok, son." was a definite sign of relief! Chesty is definitely my hero!! Last but nit least, thank each and every one of you Marines for your service! ❤ 🇺🇸
Fantastic, Ron! Such detail and style, meaning and heart. Appreciate your important messages near the end of your recent videos.
Thank you very much, and I appreciate the feedback!
Beautiful. Love that, color, rustication, attention to detail. Master peace, Thank you
"9 How can a young person stay on the path of purity?
By living according to your word.
10 I seek you with all my heart;
do not let me stray from your commands.
11 I have hidden your word in my heart

Absolutely truth. We must allow the word to abide in us and live in accordance to it. Thanks for the gentle reminder at the end there. God bless you and yours, and thanks for the lovely inspiration. I can't wait to get back to the shop and try my hand! Although I'd be hard pressed to make anything that beautiful.
Thank you very much! 😊
Happy Birthday Marine, Semper Fi
Thank you, brother! Semper Fi

@@RHumphrey You’re most welcome🐝🤗❤️
Oorah! That’s a nice pipe, Rod. Wish I could smoke pipes again, but neck and throat cancer stopped that years ago. But, it would be fun carving one even though I can no longer smoke. 👍👍👍👍👍
Our beloved Corp birthday just a few days away.

Thank you very much!
Completely stunning, Sir.
God Bless you and the Marines!
Much appreciated!
It looks beautiful, Rod!
Thanks very much! 😊
Very cool. I didn't know such a thing as a power carver existed. My grand dad used to carve, but he only used chisels and carving knives as far as I know.
Reminds me of my grandfather's pipe, except his didn't have the Marine Corps emblem. Very nice!
Thanks so much!
well done - i love it - my talent is not in the carving arean but in textiles. i have crocheted afghans for 53 yrs. currently doing baby afghans for underpriviledged children
Thank you very much, Margie! What a wonderful way to give, thank you for that! 😊
I just ordered a kit, I am going to give it a try, Looks like a fun and rewarding opportunity for something different. Great work brother!
Outstanding! Enjoy the process, it is fun!
Thank you Rod! I enjoy seeing your many different talents. It's a great tribute to the Marine Corps. I've always had a special place in my heart for the Marines as my stepdad is also a Marine and I wanted to join, but unfortunately I didn't have the opportunity. I continue to look forward to your future projects.
Thanks very much, Jennifer, and Semper Fi to your stepdad!
hey great project and great honour shown to those that severed and are serving
Thank you kindly! Cheers!
Carving my own pipe and I came across your video. Gave me great ideas on how I want to finish it. Thanks!
Happy Veterans Day to you! I used to see pipes a lot here, they used to be made out of meershaum. I remember that word from my childhood.
A subscriber just gifted me a Meerschaum kit! I'll be carving it as soon as I decide what design I want... Thank you!
Some people do what they want, some what they can. You obviously do what you want! Great job!
lol, to succeed or fail and learn... either way is experience gained. Thank you!
A talented man you are.
You're very kind, thank you!
Rod that came out perfectly. I would almost go back to smoking a pipe with that beauty.

Great job Sir! That is a beautiful pipe. GOD bless America!
Thank you kindly, and Amen to that!
I loved all the detail you put into the pipe, and your choice of color was spot on. I'm curious when you served? My brother was in between June 1980, and June of1984. So I'm wondering if the two of you could have crossed paths.
Thanks very much! I signed up in 81, so yes, we could have. I was in the infantry (2nd Bn 1st Marines) back then...
I'm Army but that's absolutely awesome buddy. Love your a patriot ❤ Love My COUNTRY U.S.A. ITS BEAUTIFUL 🇺🇸
Thank you, brother! Yes indeed, I'm a patriot down to the marrow of my bones and always will be. God bless America. Thanks for your service.

Excellent work for a newby.
Very nice work.
I use a carving knife to make figures , it's very relaxing . Old men like to "whittle their life away" it's fun.
Thank you, Ken! I like to carve little people too, though it's been a while since I've done so. It is fun and relaxing for sure.
Looks amazing.
Rod, a truly magnificent pipe! I do believe you tend to seriously understate your talents.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE!
Thank you very much, Paul, I appreciate that!
