Carving a briar pipe kit

  • Here is a video of me carving a briar pipe kit I got off of ebay for $10. It has a flaw in it, which is why I got it so cheap... but I figured it would be a fun, skill-building project that might turnout to be a family heirloom..jk.. not really;) All in all, it was fun to do and even if you're not a pipe smoker, it can be an interesting small project to work on for that pipe smoking relative or just as a small and interesting woodworking project. As always, thanks for watching!

    Be careful with the stain you used. Some stains don't take well to the heat of a pipe and will have issues on warming up. Also, be very careful not to get any inside as, even if it doesn't hurt you, it will likely affect the taste of the tobacco. Yes, I smoke pipes and just started carving my own from blanks. But my first was carved with carving knives while I relaxed in front of the fire place like the old man I am.

    There is an epoxy that gunsmiths use called Acraglass gel that works like a dream with wood. Its advantage is that you could have mixed the sanding dust from the pipe with the Acraglass to fill that imperfection and it would have taken the stain so your repair would be, largely, undetectable.

    • @homesteadonomics
      @homesteadonomics  7 років тому

      I'm gonna check into that Don... thanks! i have an old gun stock that is cracked and that might be the trick:)

    • @dtlongrifles
      @dtlongrifles 7 років тому

      homesteadonomics , It will definitely work for that. Larry Potterfield of MidwayUSA has some videos here on UA-cam that'll show the best way for fixing a cracked stock. Midway doesn't sell the Acraglass but they have a product that is just as good. Brownell's sells the Acraglass. MidwayUSA and Brownell's are both great companies to do business with. I was a gunsmith for 29 years and had them both on speed-dial.

    I have never seen the fire staining.. interesting. I will try it myself when I get the chance. I have the buffing bits, but for some reason, I never thought to use them on my drill press. I have used them in my hand tools.. Look at that.. your getting me to look outside the box... If you haven't guess, I have been going through your back videos to catch up. +Charles Hibbs lol! People can be a bit crazy for sure:) I'm not a smoker, regularly at least, but have enjoyed a few bowls in this pipe! You should definitely give it a try... I'm so glad I did and now I want to do one from a complete raw chunk of briar... or mesquite (which I have an abundance of). The nice thing about a kit like this is that you only are worrying about the shape and looks of the pipe... all the inner workings are there and drilled.
      Anyways, thanks for watching Charles... and good luck on your kit!

      yoopersurvival Thanks YS! I just told him you liked it...he literally plays like 5-6 different instruments at an awesome level! Really cool guy too... I've been trying to get him to start a YT channel just to show off his stuff, I think he'd do really well (the ladies would love him..lol)
      As for the stain... that's something I read to help the stain set and keep it from darkening too much in one area over another. I actually wasn't sure on doing it either but I think it turned out well.
      Anyways, hope you're doing well up there and getting ready for winter:)

      +homesteadonomics I hear ya Joe. I've got an old apple tree out back that got blow down in a wind storm this year and I'm wondering if I shouldn't try aging/drying it and trying my hand.
      I've heard of people using pare wood; it's just like you said though, the worst that could happen is I might learn a thing or two.

    • @homesteadonomics
      @homesteadonomics  8 років тому

      +Beardly Gentlemen Yes! That sounds like a 'windfall' to me... free wood and I'd think it would make for a beautiful pipe... and if the wood charred too quickly then at the very least it'd be a great wall hanger or special occasion piece! I want to try with some mesquite... it's very hard, similar to briar but tends to crack and probably doesn't have the fire resistance that briar does. But another option would be to try with olive wood... I've heard that makes a nice pipe too:)

      awalrus1 Hey Steve,
      I can't remember what it was called exactly but it's a carving bit that is shaped like a cylinder with a rounded end. It might have been called a cutter or carver bit, i think. I want to say it was like $5-6. It cuts really easily and I don't think it'll take much longer if you're using the dremel bit alone either.
