I don't think you guys saying this have actually (properly) cut down trees or watched it being done. Loggers felling trees know how to set a cut up so that it goes towards a removed V-shaped section, but both sides are usually cut in that type of felling. There are three primary cuts in total, two for the V, and the back-cut is last, so the tree falls...AWAY from the saw, on purpose. Nothing good comes from a tree falling towards a saw or the person using it. Either the saw or user may easily be mangled by that happening. The falling tree should release the saw immediately when the remainder starts cracking off.
There is a newer way, but that involves a big vehicle with a claw that grabs the whole top of the tree while a single chainsaw slice is made. If and which way it falls from there is up to the operator.

A saw could actually be used to carve wood blocks into stairs or fences, the way a stonecutter carves into stone, except its in your inventory as an item.
Finally, no more excessive amounts of wooden stairs when I wanna make them

No it wouldn't. Trees fall in the direction being cut because when being cut, more unbalanced weight is put on the parts not cut yet, causing it to tilt to that side, think of a straw half cut then you tape a metal ball to the top, the weight of the ball will make the start bend towards the part not cut yet as the part that is cut is able to lift up so there no reason for the weight to go there. Plus if trees went opposite of where they are cut, then cutting trees would be seen as more dangerous than it is
@Jjo_Han-wen I guess the angle of cut would have a role in which way it would fall as well as the shape of the tree. If the center of gravity(CoG) wasn't in line with the tree stump, it would fall in whatever direction the CoG is to the stump... I think
@@noahcarlisle4470 no, it is more common for a tree to fall the opposite direction of the saw, as the part cut is relieved of stress it practically is like a really slow moving rubber band snapping. And in the case the tree might have too much weight on one side from branches and such, they either try to cut where the weight would help the best with pulling the tree down or they try to add weight to the desired direction they plan to have it fall when cutting. But a normal tree typically falls away from the cut
Felling a tree usually involves three cuts, not one. Two remove a V-shaped section on the heavier side of the tree, if there seems to be a heavier side. (Experience and examination help here.) The last cut (called the back cut) is on the back side, allowing the tree to safely fall away from the saw and person using it.
If you can't tell or easily control the weight by removing limbs, a rope or strap being pulled would be the most common way to control the direction the tree falls, rather than adding weight.

If mojang actually adds a saw, the only way it could work is a way to customise wooden blocks, so you could carve out 1/8th chunks at a time, so you could make stairs, slabs, vertical slabs, and it would have potential for a lot more detail and something everyone would want ( but mojang would never add this because they barely ever listen to the community )

I think an interesting function would be if you mine wood with a saw, all of the leaves dependent on that wood would disappear, dropping everything instantly.
You could use the saw to make vertical slabs; also 1:1 recipe, wooden stairs like stone stairs have, with the stone cutter.

that is actually a great idea you can cut the tree with the saw and you cut it completely and you get all of it but it takes more time and not only that they can add a plank version of the stonecutter like everyone wants and you'd need a saw for that

Oh dont mind me, just kinda hyperfixating on Phoenix mentioning the best and my probably favorite mod of all times. I have no idea why this gets me this much but this just kinda made me happy for a bigger youtuber to give it just such a random shoutout. I know its well known but even if some dont, they may still check out the amazing mod that it is ^-^
SO. My theory is a Vertical Slab. You can make the saw out of different ingots for the stone slabs, and iron one for blocks. It will give you one normal slab, and the block will become a vertical slab.
