Great reaction! Fun fact: Jaune’s sweatshirt is also another connection to Pyrrha even though he’s had it for forever. When we first met her, we learned that she was on the box of Pumpkin Pete’s Marshmallow Flakes cereal for a while.
It's always funny to later go back to the second episode of season one, where you can clearly see the very bottom of the rabbit face, but have no idea what it is until this episode.

The Geist Grimm can possess objects to fight but a fun fact about them is the giant knight Weiss fought in her trailer was a Geist possessing a giant suit of armor that her dad Jacques made her fight under the deal if she won she goes to Beacon and if not Atlas academy.

I've never known it was a geist in the armor that's cool I always thought it was winter controlling it to spar with
To add on the Grist is called the Arma Gigas when possessing the Knight and Petra Gigas when possessing boulders.
I think what's more interesting is the ice queendom anime canonizes that bit from the manga explaining the Arma gigas but also canonizes the strategy of lowering aura in a fight to risk taking a hit but ensure you still have reserve for fighting with a power or enhanced stats a bit longer. Also explains why Weiss did it cause her aura is pretty crap and is priorly explain theory crafted by winter that it can only hold up against at least two attacks full force like that.

The saddest thing but also the most respectful moment is that when ever them JN_R is always together. They always stand next to each other leaving a open space for her. Even though she is gone.

1:20 if you listen closely you can hear a instrumental version of the song Lusus Naturae playing. Until this point, the song was only used in the game RWBY: Grimm Eclipse. It was then added to vol 4 soundtrack.

I know people like to rag on Jaune, but I personally thought it was neat seeing how far he’s come(or will go I suppose).
Jaune has come a long way for sure. We have him lot of crap in the beginning and feel that he earned it haha, but he also has earned our respect for growing so much as a character 🙂
This is when RWBY really takes off as its own show. I loved the new style and the story.

Salem is the wicked witch of the west, Arthur Watts is based off of Sherlock Holmes sidekick Watson, Tyrian Callows is From the Scorpion & the frog, Hazel Rainart is Hansel, and Klein Sieben is the 7 dwarves to Weiss' snow white.

Yeah Tyrian is basically what you'd get of the Joker actually served someone. And some of the episodes from Vol 4 and 5 don't seem to match up Chronologically to each other when they shift focus as well as being like 3-6 months after the Fall of Beacon. So there will be moments of "That seems to happen too soon after This".

Its less of a problem if you watch the entirety of Vol. 4 and 5 in one go.
If you mean her story it is explained albiet in a one or two Lines in 4 and 5 respectively

Srsly though, this theme fits its volume soooooo well.
The Grimm possessing the stones and tree was called a Geist, but a Geist actually becomes classified as a Gigas once it gains some armor. When Geists possess natural materials they seem to become Petra Gigas, but when they possess a suit of armor like the one Weiss actually fought in her season 1 trailer, they become Arma Gigas. I'm excited for you to find out more about our little unnamed (currently) friend because he has a very interesting story. And finding out what happened to Ozpin will be just as exciting to see your reaction to.
We really want to know what happened to Ozpin. Feels like the biggest mystery of this season 😅

I'm pretty sure they all knew the face was the geists weakspot. The problem was it kept protecting it and they weren't really getting through. They could kill its limbs and the geist was more than willing to sacrifice said limbs to protect itself, but then it would just grab something else to replace them. Jaune's strategy of "just hit it harder" actually makes the most sense then, because hitting it hard enough to break multiple limbs at once removes the bits that are getting in the way and protecting its vital spot, and if it tries to go for more it's going to be vulnerable. As it was, it instead abandoned its core and tried to flee, letting Ruby snipe it down. So, the strat worked.
Funnily enough this is the same kind of grimm that Wiess fought in her first trailer, and notice how she took it down back then too; she paralyzed all its limbs and then hit really hard in the core whilst moving really fast, exactly how RNJR dealt with this one.
End of the opening theme lyrics: "Move Onward, Not There Yet (MONTY) so let's just live".
It's not juat Jaune, I think this volume does a very good job allowing all of the characters to process what happened in the last one in a believable way. Which must have been hard to do, for a show that started as such a light-hearted and goofy way.
The characters grow up just as the show does 🥲
Jaune was clear, though; he said it was only protecting the face, then gave them specific routes of attack. His plan was plenty detailed enough for them, and it was only Ren's weapon that wasn't doing anything to the rock. Nora and Ruby could hit hard enough to break the limbs, which is why Jaune got them to do the combo attack at the end there ("Ready to try out the new upgrade?" to Nora, talking about the electrified hammer head). They played it off for a bit of a laugh with how simple it seemed, but Jaune's always been a good strategist. Even back when they fought the Death Stalker (the scorpion Grimm) in Volume 1, he's the one who called all their shots.
In my personal opinion this is where the show truly gets good.
I agree, sadly I know a lot of the fandom seems to think this is where the show drops off. But I'd say the reverse, the first three are great volumes. But I think the show honestly gets better with time.

In my personal opinion this is where the fandom starts unpleasantly disagreeing about the show's quality.
For me that's Volume 6. Though 4 does have that nice tone shift to it I really appreciate (Yang's and Ren's parts especially)
The "Hit harder" was instructions to remove the limbs so it couldn't use them to guard the eye. Which Nora could do because she can charge up as a "new upgrade".
Neat note: The voice actor who played the blacksmith also did the voice for Dr. Gero and Cooler in DBZ Abridged. Very distinctive voice.

So, I will preface this with the fact that V4 is my least favorite volume of RWBY. There’s just a lot of specific things that don’t particularly work for me. However, there are a lot of good things which I’ll talk about as we go, I’m sure.
For now, episode 1.
We’ve got a whole new group of characters, which for brevity I’ll call Team WTCH (witch). Watts, Tyrian, Cinder, and Hazel under Salem. They’re fun. Particularly love the detail that Watts doesn’t sit until Salem does. Such arrogance.
Speaking of our wicked witch, I love that there’s an instrumental of Divide as she makes her entrance. Best song from V3.
Unknown boy is unknown.
Loving the new designs for RNJR. Particularly Ren’s. But I also think Nora’s is really cute. Love a good bomber jacket.
And another musical cue from V3 with Mirror Mirror part 2 playing when we see Weiss.
As I mentioned last reaction, they switched from Poser to Maya between volumes and while that was indeed the right call, it does mean that they had to build everything from scratch, and thus there are some growing pains. The color saturation is a little off, specifically on the models, and there’s a lot of floaty moments in the combat. Minor issues for sure but something I noticed.

Not sitting until a superior does is actually a sign of respect in most European cultures (Watts seems to be British-equivalent). The Queen/King is always the first to sit at any gathering, and it's the reason military protocol is for everybody to stand and come to attention when an officer enters the room. Watts remaining standing until Salem sits I actually take as the opposite of arrogance; it's a sign of his respect and deference to her.
EDIT: I had forgotten the part where she does actually gesture for them to sit, so I definitely see where you're coming from. Old British etiquette is to stand while speaking to a superior, so I still think he's showing respect because he's replying to her question, but it is a bit more ambiguous.

Volume 4 may be slow, but reactions to the Nuckelavee and Qrow's fight never disappoint.
I like the intro fight to this volume. They are still students, so I give Jaune a little leeway. It's also our first encounter with this kind of grimm.
The timeline between characters in different places doesn't always line up, but it isn't a huge deal. The writers didn't want to have to be strict with the timeline when our team is scattered across the world.

Back when this episode first aired on RT, where it's shown that Pyrrha's circlet has been incorporated into Jaune's shield, the original subtitles read: (audience crying). Bastards.

Tyrian (crazy guy at the beginning) is usually loved or hated. I don’t think I’ve seen anyone who’s indifferent about him. The farm boy, however, is widely loved by almost everyone

This is the season they retired the old animation software and graduated to MAYA. The shaders in MAYA aren’t as resource intensive as they were in Poser so the visuals really pop for the environment. They do however mute the colors in general

Fun Facts
Fact 1: As with previous Volume premieres, when the episode was released at the scheduled time of October 22nd at 10:00am CST, the volume of users attempting to access the Rooster Teeth website was so large that it was inaccessible for some time. Director of Technology at Rooster Teeth, Adam Baird, even received calls incorrectly informing him that the website was under attack by DDoS. A delay in export also meant the episode also had to be re-uploaded, compounding the problem. It was announced that the episode release would be delayed to 3:00pm CST. In lieu of the episode, the Volume 4 Opening was released to the public. The problem was fixed sooner than anticipated and the episode released for Rooster Teeth First members at approximately 1:00pm CST.
Fact 2: The title of the episode, "The Next Step", is a reference to a similarly-titled episode in Volume 1, "The First Step". This pattern of nods to titles from The Beacon Arc continues in Volume 5.
Ruby also says "Bad landing strategy!" while falling through trees at the beginning of the battle against the Geist, another callback to the episode.
Fact 3: A portrait of the Arma Gigas appears in Weiss' room.
Obviously the ideal solution would be RRNJ. Pronounced "orange", which is not only a color, but specifically the color you get when you mix ruby red and jaune yellow.
That's not one I've heard before, but definitely works. Ranger green is at least a thing, and just sounds better than junior, in my opinion, which is why I always preferred RNJR.
Klein, Weiss's butler, is voiced by J. Michael Tatum, veteran anime voice actor....better known for voicing Sebastian in the anime series Black Butler, "simply one hell of a butler" (he's a demon).
Chris Sabat too (voicing Watts). And the blacksmith this episode is the English voice of Lord Ainz from Overlord.

It wasn't until rewatching this so many times that I noticed something. The violin piece at the very beginning is a slowed down part of Lusus Naturae from the RWBY video game
A note of defense for Jaune's strategy: Yes, you need to get the head to take down the geist. However, it constantly protects it with "his limbs" which he can easily "reattach" so to speak. So it is actually quicker to take them all out at once if possible - which they did - and then you have a clean shot to the actual target. He just... needs to learn to communicate better in battle... which, by the way, we also saw during the tournament so it's a work in progress for him. 🤷♀
I JUST realized Pumpkin Pete is a reference to Peter Rabbit.

- The common thread between Cinder, Watts, Tyrian, and Hazel is that...they're kinda what their inspirations would be like if their stories went in much bleaker directions. What if Cinderella's Prince Charming let her down? What if Dr. Watson followed the example of Moriarty instead of Holmes?
- ...Also, Tyrian's reaction when he was told to merely bring Ruby is hilarious.
- Compost King! Aheh...sorry, RWBY Chibi can explain that. I hope you'll at least check that out after you've caught up on Volume 9.
- The Grimm that Team RNJR fought here is a form that Geists can assume. The Arma Gigas that Weiss slew is another Geist type.
This just in: Helluva Boss Season 1, Episode 8 episode finale is finally out after it was delayed for so long.

so here is the fun fact about weiss's buttler
his name is "Klein" wich is german for "small" and it's pretty easy to see what fairy tale refference he is
So one thing that's I have an issue (which will be a recurring issue from Volume 4) are how the characters movement when in the air, it just seems like they float in the air like gravity doesn't exist for a short moment
The rabbit was a mascot for pumpkin Pete. The only thing jaune knew phyrra was famous for.
The best thing for phyrra an jaune is that they treated each other as normal people.
"The eye's the weakspot" and they just said it's protecting its weak spot. Just "Shoot it in the eye" doesn't work if you can't hit said eye.
The Schnee butler’s name, Klein Sieben is German for Small Seven => ie the seven dwarfs
I've mentioned this in other reactions, but Jaune said way back in Volume 1 that his weapons were 'family heirlooms'. So, by merging Pyrrha's equipment with his, he made her a part of his family, in a way.

Fun fact: Hazel's (the big gruff voice villain) VA William Orendorff also does all the sounds for all of the Grimm! (with the exception of one very notable Grimm in one of the more recent volumes.)
Jaune is really a good strategist "We hit it harder" is actually a good plan, the grimm doesnt protect its limbs, but its face (not an eye, it was not exactly a ciclops, but more like a phantom), so, if they destroys the limbs from one hardest hit, the grimm doesnt have how to protect its face, that's why it tried to escape when team RNJR destroyed its arms, Jaune was absolutley right.
The full name of the butler that was talking to Weiss is named Klein Seiban. Which translates to "Small Seven" in german, keeping up with the Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs only in this case he has seven different personalities.
If you take the first letter of each word from the second to last line from the new intro "Move onward, not there yet" you get Monty. The composer actually held a contest to see who would catch it first and as a reward the winner got a CD of the complete Volume 4 soundtrack. Also the very beginning where we see the 4 colors going on the map show's where each of the 4 RWBY girls are.

Also fun fact! The debate Nora and Ren had at the beginning of the episode about team names was actually one us fans had during the wait between volumes.

If jaune sent in 50 boxes of pumpkin pete's cereal that means that he did in fact know who pyrrha was the whole time. since her face is on every box, and he still treated her no different then anyone else.
I'm not sure but it's possible they needed to get the geist out of the rock and reveal it's whole body to be able to actually kill it so Jaune may have been trying to figure out how to draw it out. Also to be fair the other three didn't even figure that out so...
So I'm not going to give you any spoilers other than what they show has stated or hints of motivations for characters. For the motivations Salem is not motivated by power or money. Ozpin is officially dead....................................... I have watched all the volumes that have been release.

Not 100 percent, but I think Shion Village (The one that they couldn't communicate with) was where team JNPR was supposed to be going to when they were all doing missions in Vol 2.

Volume 4 is very slow with not that many fight scenes in it and due to that it’s one of the less appropriated volumes. However it has some great character development and interactions and I look forward to you watching it

Jaune's new armor is neat and I do like how it's using Pyrrha's old set, but it bothers me that the shoulder guard is on the same one he holds his shield in. It'd be more useful on the sword hand since his shield already protects his upper body.
Jaune as the strategist is also a hard sell for me lol
When he gets the chance to think about something he comes up with good strategies. It just getting that moment.

I mean... you yourself said the geist was protecting it's face. Jaune laid out his strat pretty clearly. Knock off the arms so it can't protect the face. I guess I'm not getting where his strategy was wrong.
To be fair to Jaune's strategy your right he didn't get it across well at first. But his plan was to knock t9 limbs free to attack the face as it defends its face when attacked. The only reason Ren hit it was because it was distracted with Jaune.

Jaune's a great leader and commander, not necessarily a good strategist. He's got the field charisma, good judgement and quick decision making, but he isn't necessarily great at planning and strategizing.
