Behind the scenes fact when co-creators Miles and Kerry where discussing The Apathy Kerry described how they killed people and Miles said "That is the darkest thing I have ever heard you say" the skeleton in the tunnels in meant to hint on how they kill.
I never saw that. All I knew about them was they’re not physically strong but just chase after you and make you feel so apathetic you don’t want to move anymore. Is that what they said or was it something worse?

Fun fact: The bag that Ruby got at the beginning of the volume contained Friendship Bracelets for the group. Apparently it was meant to be an important plot point against the Apathy but the concept was cut.
Honestly for the best, that would have been so cheesy.

This episode is genuinely one of the best horror episodes I’ve ever seen.
Best episode in the volume.
It’s insane to me how short a moment Blake’s “It’s fine.” is, with how much of an affect it had on me when I first watched this episode. The complete lack of movement, flat shading in the eyes. It’s chilling.
Flashback to volume 3, Qrow in Ozpin's office, "I've been out there and I've seen the things she's made, and let me tell you - they are fear."
In an earlier volume the writers were asked their favorite Grimm and Miles Luna at the time said that his favorite wasn’t in the show yet. He later confirmed the Apathy was his favorite design.
The Apathy and Nuckalvee are the peak of creepy looking grimm and I love it!
The Apathy are Miles Luna’s favorite. As a reminder, he’s one of the show runners and Jaune’s VA. At one point, I believe in the lead up to Volume 6, he was asked which grimm was his favorite and responded along the lines of “you’ll see them soon enough”

Not only are these his favorite Grimm, but he said this episode and the previous one are his favorite episodes.
The Apathy were one of the very first Grimm ever designed, but they held out on using them since they were too powerful to be beaten early on in the show

Fact 1: The idea for the story that takes place in this episode existed before Volume 1 was written.
Fact 2: Miles based the episode's plot on the short story Bartleby the Scrivener by Herman Melville.
Fact 3: Maria is colorblind, which was evident in the episode when we learn she couldn't tell Ruby's eye color immediately.
Fact 4: According to the writers, seeing the burning Apathy made Qrow realize that he almost let everyone get killed and now start to hate himself
Apathy. One of the most insidiously effective Grimm.
Originally they were meant to appear in Volume 1 or 2.
Surprised Salem never mixxed it with the Nuckaleeve.
Surprised she never made a Nuckaleeve version of a deathstalker.
@@CircuitReborn Deathstalker is already a complete armored package. All it would need is a ranged attack. But making Apathy more mobile? That would be an absolute nightmare.
Still get chills from when Blake said, "It's fine," and the last line Maria read from the book. It's really haunting how you can lose your will to live and let yourself slowly deteriorate
I absolutely love your discussions and how you two so easily link situations to real life (apathy/depression and their effects, our shared humanity), as well as pick up on the subtext in the show itself (like Ruby "losing her shit" and throwing the bottle).
This is such a highlight chapter, and like you said it's not because of lore.
Thank goodness Maria is a speed-reader! If she hadn’t read through 8 journals and figured out the apathy were involved, she might not have been able to get the girls out of the cellar tunnels in time.
The Apathy were partially inspired by the story of Bartleby the Scrivener. To sum it up, it's basically a story about a man that became so apathetic to the world that he refused to eat or drink or move, stating that he'd "prefer not to" until he died. It was revealed by the writers that these Grimm were supposed to have made an appearance back in V1 but were deemed too powerful for that time in the show. They kept getting pushed back until, finally, V6.
They seemed to have been made for this moment, in all honesty. Our heroes are at a severe low point. Their ability to trust Oz not to lie to them has been reduced to nothing (and he's abandoned them), they just found out their final boss is immortal. Their morale is completely shot. They have no other objective than to get the Lamp to Atlas, which to them in this moment, seems so pointless after learning the truth. "Delaying the inevitable," Oscar calls it.
It's such a perfect time for these new Grimm, that it wouldn't be unusual to not second guess the fact that they're all Tired and questioning why they must do all this. But as the scene outside the house goes on, we get more on edge. The music comes back in with these strings, and the characters' pupils are blown and dull, and their voices become more and more lifeless until even Ruby starts to succumb.
God I just really love this episode and I love these Grimm. Crwby just really blew it out of the park with this one.
I adored this episode. The setup, the execution, the suspense, the new Grim that is ciminally underused ...its the early highlight of V6 imo. The best part is Yangs Eyes when she hears Ruby scream, waking her up from the lethargy instantly
There are a lot of interesting character moments here, such as Yang coming out of the state because Ruby screamed, Blake being the one in the most danger, Maria being snippier than usual, the huntsman's corpse in the tunnel, and I think that's what makes this pair of episodes really sing. They make sure to put in these little details that fill out the narrative so it doesn't just feel like a sequence of events, it's a story in a lived-in world.
This chapter is hands down the best horror movie in the past few years.
I really like that the Silver eyes are rooted in the wish to protect life because they are the counter to the Grimm and Grimm are designed to destroy life.
One should always remember, that Remnant is a very cruel and unforgiving world in the constant near-apocalypse state
Qrows missfortune being the thing that saves them (the bottle falling and awaking Ruby) was a nice touch. Showing that there are uses for his semblance outside of combat.

Ruby is the Simple Soul, but also the Silver-eyed Warrior. So she's always UP - but even she can be brought Down.
Congratulations on meeting the second most terrifying Grimm in all of RWBY.
In my mind that grim is the most dangerous one because you can't fight apathy, if you have ever felt apathy you know just how soul destroying it is
Remember some qrow once said "those with silver eyes are destined to lead a life or the warrior"
Believe it or not you've seen two individuals use silver eyes, one was rwby so can you remember the other?
Apathy are to me to this day the most interesting Grimm in the series. Also loved the little mystery with the town unfolding to this and how they tried to use the Apathy.
Based ONLY on design, do you find the Apathy more unsettling than the boss of Volume 4? Also I want to say that I really love how it was WEISS who set the alcohol on fire! Based on what Whitley said about their mother in Volume 4, and what Weiss said to Yang in Volume 5, it was fitting that Weiss was the one who burned the alcohol
This or Lost Fable is a lot of people’s favourite episode, even after some of the crowd pleasers in Volume 9.
I for one always look forward to watching reactions to the next one…
It’s also undersold how big a moment that was for Qrow to be wasted and watching burning Grimm that almost killed his family. His drinking could have made him lose everything for the hundredth time.
And at the same time, having his drinking being the thing that saves them (the bottle falling and waking Ruby), it was a very cool detail.
This is my favorite episode of RWBY. Roosterteeth is good at horror.

There's actually a cartoon called "Milo Murphy's Law", where the basic premise is that the main character has constant bad luck, all the time. He's actually really upbeat about it, though.
American dragon. good future and bad future sisters. The one that only sees good futures is negative because she knows all the good that will happen to her. Nothing surprises her and takes all the fun out of it. The bad future sister sees every good thing more special than anyone, each moment makes up for all the bad.
I have been looking forward to this episode for so long! The Apathy are so freaking cool, hands down the scariest Grimm in the entire show. I have a soft spot for the Nuckelavee from season 4, but the Apathy are my favorite. And I usually don't even like horror!
Edited to add: Next episode...no spoilers, but anyone who has issues with eye injuries might want to be braced for what happens.
So the fairy tale Qrow mentioned to Ruby in volume 3 is correct. Silver-eyed warriors can kill Grimm with just a look. Every fairy tale referenced so far has been history, not myth.

Ah, the highlight of my week, more RWBY! This is one of my favourite episodes. The horror movie vibes are real, and the Apathy are such a fantastic design. So glad you enjoyed this one ^_^
The most scariest Grimm in 6 Volume.
For a 2 and Half episodes, this was a great set up episode that made things very interesting!

It was told to Ruby at the end of the 3rd season, when he first talked about silver eyes, that they were known as the greatest warriors around. Assume that anyone who can use Silver Eyes are also able to use weapons and have experience with Grimm.
One of the things that really make the Apathy so impactful is the fact that they're the only Grimm to date that the heroes did not defeat, merely *survived*. While Ruby managed to disintegrate a small group with her silver eyes, there were plenty of others down in the cellar, and while Weiss lit the place on fire, the fact Qrow saw some still stalking through the flames makes it ambiguous if they were really killed, or if merely contained after the house burned down and closed off the exit from the cellar.
I find the Apathy so interesting as a Grimm concept since we know that Grimm are drawn to negative emotions yet here’s a Grimm that removes all emotions both positive and negative. If you’re dealing with the Apathy chances are good you won’t be dealing with many if any other Grimm. Not that the Apathy really need help though.
One of RWBY's best episodes for sure. The tone was PERFECT throughout. I wish they would veer off into different genre mini arcs more often.

Herman Melville wrote a story, "Bartlebee the Scrivener" about a man who wastes away to death due to his own apathy.
The Apathy are my absolute FAVORITE Grimm. They are almost the complete opposite of every other Grimm we've seen; slow and relatively weak on their own. But the idea of slowly just losing energy until you curl up in a ball and die, despite hunger or fear, is WAY more terrifying to me. I have an Apathy Tshirt from RTX and I can't get over how cool an idea this short arc was. It is also one of my favorite Qrow moments, when he realises just how close they were to not making it out of there, the horror on his face says it all.
The phrase "I am just so tired" has never inspired fear...until this episode.
What I love is how you could tell something was off with the characters. They weren't themselves. In animation where you can control the physical aspects of something, it paid off really well to have little colour changes, and little details in their eyes disappear and flicker. Yeah, Qrow is going through it right now. Also! Ruby only gave in to the effects when the people who followed her gave up on her. Love picking up new things with every watch.
Out of all the craziest things I heard from Weiss, “They’re locked!” was wild. Ma’am summon literally ANYTHING 😂
It's fear, man. You can see it in their eyes. Fear makes you do stupid things and not think of the most obvious thing right in front of you.
these 2 episodes i think were meant to show our heroes why giving up isn't really an option, as they have been questioning their lives after they learn the truth ozpin was hiding. So even though apathy was enhancing their doubts, they themselves were already doubting and questioning the fight before them.
Now they know they cant give up , although they could use a morale boost
The Apathy is by far my favourite Grimm in RWBY and this was my favourite story in the whole show.

I told you people this chapter was scary.
The Apathy is, in my mind, the most terrifying Grimm out there, due to their humanoid appearance. While the Grimm are terrifying in their own right individually, they are more Badass looking. The Apathy however, Nightmare Fuel. One or two aren't so bad as their passive apathy(which is strengthened by their screams) isn't so bad, but a whole pack in a place where they can't get out, well the results speak for themselves.
Next chapter is both Badass and Adorable and that's all I will say.
Maria Calavera is the best secondary cast member, and she only gets better as the series goes on!
And this sequence in the dead village might be my favourite mini storyline.
If that bottle hadn't fallen, they might have never woken up.
The opposite of love isn't hate, its indifference.
The Apathy, definitely my favorite Grimm till now. It is such a dangerous and terrific entity, which means is so well done.
The Apathy reminds me of The Pax from Firefly/Serenity. Ironically, the motivations for both are very similar.
- Jaune was pretty pissed about Oz holding out on the whole 'Relic attracts the Grimm' factor back at the start of the volume. I think he even did the 'slam against the wall' bit.
- yeah, my thoughts when this ep came out were along the lines of some sort of sleeping curse as well, Ken.
- in Maria's defence, she doesn't know about Qrow's semblance.
- it's not so much Ruby is immune, she's just more resistant.
- the fact that she just mentions that she had silver eyes and that she has a good knowledge of Grimm seems to be a clear indication that she's a retired huntress. We get her backstory next episode.
- I don't recall the Apathy showing up, but I also have only seen up to partway thru Vol 7, so it's possible they'll appear again.
- The Apathy (and the Geist RNJR fought at the start of Vol 4) do illustrate that not all Grimm attack directly, with teeth and claws.
It wasn't a TERRIBLE plan, but there were sapposed to be only 2, NOT TWO-DOZEN!

As someone with hardcore bad luck pretty much all the time I relate to Qrow on such a personal level

Favorite Grimm reveal I love this Grimm so much and Its basically based on their design and how they do what they do but basically they just look so creepy and i love it, idk why i like them more then any grimm before but i do lol, sadly I'm busy for a little so I don't have time to watch your reaction but as soon as I can I will I can't wait love you guys 💞

My favourite episode of the entire volume and part of my top5 of the entire series, its awesome how brilliant writing it was 😍
it amazing how much the Apathy remind me of Redead from Zelda games, yet it seem like they were never really use as inspired from them
The concept of apathy, not the Grimm, just apathy, is something I find very difficult to describe. At the most basic level, 8 would say apathy is an emotion of a sort, but it also isn't because it's a lack of emotion, specifically caring. I can't call it dangerous or problematic, because dangers and problems have solutions. But you can't fight apathy, there's no solution to it. You can't make _yourself_ care about something, let alone anyone else.
This was another benchmark chapter in the series. And one of the most telling...... It truly showed how really human our heroes can be, especially after learning the truth of their situation!!! I knew you'd break that down well, Ken & Beth.
And the APATHY!!! Talk about nightmare fuel....... A living reminder that your greatest foe in life feeds not on your body but your soul. Great storytelling!!! I'm sure that Remnant has many stories like that. That reminds me........ Have you read RWBY's Fairy Tales of Remnant yet??? 12 tales in one book and 6 have been animated!! Check them out probably after this Volume.

IMO, this chapter felt more like a horror film. So much that I think RT kind of missed an opportunity to make some non RWBY related content that may have helped boost their brand. Some fun, feels, and excitement are a coming (spoiler not spoiler). See you two next Saturday, granted YT doesn't throw a wrench into that.

Luck is usually perspective. Was the blown tire bad luck? Blowing at the farm with a spare and a compressor? Miles away would have been way worse. And Qrow dropping that bottle saved them by waking Ruby.

Do you have any plans of reacting to the RT serious GenLock? They have an interesting take on apathy and how it's related to modern media and news. Essentially pointing out that when we're bombarded with the worst things happening with humanity every second of the day, our brains adapt apathy to stay sane. And this makes up complacent to things that should HORRIFY us as a society.
Now all thats left for scary grimm so far is the most PG form of body horror ive ever seen.

My Favorite Episode!
I think RWBY is honestly at its best when they lean into the horror aspect. Grimm like the Apathy and the Nuckelavee are genuinely terrifying creature designs with equally terrifying power. I love it.

My favorite episode in my least favorite season.
This was unironically the most flawless execution of story telling in a single arc yet for multiple reasons. Not the least of which was the fact they really showed the True Horror the Grimm can bring and to top it off this exact episode was a Halloween special when it came out. They timed it just perfectly. 🫡
