    The orb said "No escape. I have failed. We have all failed. The Astartes defy our touch. You must return! Break your seal! We'll never survive. You must take them!" And then the Inquisitor says "Recall them immediately!" then the Inquisitor gets possessed. Had they not put him down, he would have been the epicenter of a nuclear sized explosion of psychic energy, killing everyone and ripping the ship apart.

    This redefined fan films, and honestly the only way Games Workshop could reproduce it was to hire him. This should have been up for short film awards galore. You mentioned the creator joining Games Workshop, so lets be clear, when these videos were made the creator DID NOT work for Games Workshop. This is a fan passion project. The creator joining Games Workshop coincided with a wave of cease and desist letters to all the creators who did not join, and taking down the original on the creators channel. The foot very much was on people's necks. GW was trying to make their own subscription service to monetize people like this in the community. It has failed miserably, and only managed to damage what little good will existed between them and their community. My personal view which seems fairly common in the community pretty much boils down to "I love the universe, but hate the company that owns the rights. I like that talented creators like this get paid, but I hate that they end up under the control of that terrible company in order to get paid."

    • @d8bChris
      @d8bChris 11 місяців тому +9

      This is a bit strong. You have to keep control of your IP or everyone can take a slice and profit from it. They’ve spent decades creating this universe and a multi national company and want control of the quality …..you’re telling me you wouldn’t protect that……and if they hadn’t employed him they would have been stupid. No doubt the best 40k animation. 😊

    • @broutefoin
      @broutefoin 11 місяців тому +27

      @@d8bChris no, you don't need to police it, but even if you feel the need to police and "protect" your IP, there's way better and less destructive, heavy handed ways to do it, can surgically cut off brand damaging/mediocre content without nuking the good, "ambassadorial" content for example, or offer licensing and promotion to good creators, etc. IP/copyright protection does NOT have a burden of protection on it unlike trademark (which HAS to be asserted and defended or you risk losing it). This was just GW being greedy and lazy, they had plans for WH+ to cash in on their lore, but couldn't compete in quality and output with passionate fan creators, simple as. and GW does what it always does, abuse and spit on its fanbase.
      they tried to get in on the streaming service bubble (as its popping) and had the brilliant idea of doing it by A) Pissing off its existing fanbase, the ones most likely to join their very niche service in the first place and B) kneecapping their own growth by gating fanmade content behind a paywall instead of leaving it out as lure/beacon to attract the ever elusive "wider audience"
      Astartes was a net positive for GW before they tried to cash in on it, it introduced a bunch of normies to the setting, got them interested, got them talking and that got more people's eyes on what they offer, (books and models) look through the comment section of any reactor when these were originally posted a few years back.
      there's a concept called Network externality/Network effect, in that you benefit indirectly from 3rd parties promoting (through the incentive is cashing in) on your thing as it promotes awareness and adoption of your product, you can look to the telephone and DnD for examples of that, basically, the more people know about you and use a product that ties into your stuff (even if you didn't make it/sell it yourself) you gain value from the growth in audience/adoption.
      the passion put into something like this only really comes from fanart, from hunger, without an oversight committee and corporate "quality" control. GW cannot produce an Astates level product, bureaucracy kills creativity, (at best GW could sponsor or patron it) nothing they've released on WH+ measures up, their trailers don't measure up (and I like most of them), Pariah Nexus doesn't measure up, Hammer and Bolter, etc, and as far as I'm aware, I don't think Syama worked on anything released so far, but GW is notorious for not crediting artists so, i can't tell one way or another, will we ever see an Astartes 2? (he had one in the works before GW scooped him up), they announced it for 2024, but will WH+ die off before we see it?

      @@d8bChrisProtecting their IP is one thing, they kept the fan community on edge for years after the policy change. Thankfully it was only the fan animators who got hit and not the lore, battle report or painting channels. The way they worked their policy made them public enemy number one and the community still has a bad taste in its mouth from that change. 5 of the best fan projects got shut down because of this change despite them picking up the Astartes project. It's sad and it did more harm than good

    • @grantharriman284
      @grantharriman284 11 місяців тому +18

      @@d8bChris Look around. Nearly every game company would literally KILL for a fanbase this invested and this creative, the wrongful death settlement would actually cost them less money than they would make off of it. The community members are producing higher quality products which do more to grow that fanbase than GW a lot of the time, and GW doesn't have to raise a finger. This isn't about control of an IP. Some of these fan creators have been working for literal YEARS and not in secret either. They never went after them before, so why now? It's about MONEY. Almost none of those creators are making any great amount of money, but GW was getting 0. THATS why GW put a stop to it. They tried to force that thriving community onto their own subscription platform, and the community said no. The result? They are cannibalizing their community in a failed attempt to make a profit because they can't match the talent that they have grown.
      Yes, GW would be stupid not to offer Astartes a job, but the carrot had a stick in the other hand. THATS the problem. If they just offer those creators to come do what they already do, but get paid by GW and have their work be official 40k canon I would not be writing this comment. That offer was paired with a threat to RUIN those creators if they didn't play ball.

    Ok to answer some of your questions: the Astartes are genetically enhanced super soldiers that have extra organs put into them that turn them into seven to eight foot tall demigods that can outperform any baseline human physically. We're talking combat stim producing glands, we're talking two hearts to pump more blood, we're talking a tortoise shell like rib cage. Then slap on a literal ton of power armor, and you have one of the scariest defenders of humanity, the Space Marines. As for 14:15 the man in the red robe is an inquisitor, a kind of psychic detective with some of the most political power in the entire setting. The reason he is put down is because he is being possessed by some kind of demon. What the marines did was standard procedure to prevent it from manifesting physically in the material world, and while it may seem like overkill it's really not. Possessed psychics can wipe an entire world if allowed to run wild. Honestly killing him there was a mercy.

  • @PureYang0

    They aren't clones, people are specially trained and cultivated to be strong enough to even wear space marine armor. You should watch the video where it shows the guy putting the armor on, his whole body has been modified and experimented on since he was a child just to prepare him to be able to use this armor when he's an adult.

    These guy's would use clone troopers as toilet paper every one of them have survived things that would make Vader sht his gimp suit just for the honour of trying to survive becoming a space Marine. If they survive the uplift process they become ten foot tall demigods who will spend the rest of their lives possibly centuries battling their traitorous brothers, super advanced aliens, planet eating hive minded giant insect swarms, battle mad fungal monsters who view defeat as just another chance for a good slaughter, insane cultists worshiping mad gods, undead terminators and literal demons from hell.

  • @vegladex

    Who are even more elite than the Astartes? I'm glad you asked! There are two major groups that spring to mind:
    The Grey Knights, who are a specialised, hyper-elite branch of the regular Astartes (Like how Retributors are a "Chapter", the Grey Knights are categorised as a "Chapter" despite being practically incomparable) who use a lot of teleportation technology, and all wield Psyker powers, like the two guys in the gold masks.
    And the Adeptus Custodes. While the Adeptus Astartes are a genetically enhanced army of supersoldiers, the Custodes are a genetically enhanced palace guard of *one-man armies.* Even the most common, unremarkable Custodes is the equal of a leader, hero, or champion of any common Astartes chapter. However, they aren't built to work together like Astartes are; the comparison I like is "Lions to Wolves".

    Welcome to the grim darkness of the far future, friend.
    To answer some questions, Astartes (Space Marines) are the elite super soldiers of the Imperium of Man, enhanced from normal humans through bioengineering. The enemy they are fighting seems to be an original creation but is likely related to Chaos, the otherworldly forces from a parallel dimension called The Warp.

    That boarding craft is called a Caestus Assault Ram, which can carry an entire squad (normally 5, up to 10 max), and is fitted with twin-linked Magna Meltas, big fucking microwave guns which quite literally burn a hole into the hull of the enemy ship being boarded. A single squad of Space Marines can at a minimum cause immense havoc, and potentially pacify the ship, that is how dangerous they are.
    Their power armour is the Mark VII Aquila-pattern armour, constructed of ceramite and able to withstand fire from a multitude of weapons (including that multi-las that barely touched the Sergeant). They are servo-actuated, equipped with nutrient and med dispensers as well as micro-grenade dispensers, and can be entirely vacuum-sealed for low-pressure or space environments. Their helms are fitted with a variety of sensors and a sophisticated HUD, and a fully internal vox system for discrete communication.
    Sergeants will usually carry a special weapon such as a plasma pistol (that blue glowing gun) as it can be used as a contingency for more difficult targets, although plasma guns are dangerous to the wielder as well since they have a tendency to overload after a few shots (which is why he dropped it in the 4th scene after two quick shots). The standard boltgun fires what are known as bolter shells, .75 calibre mass-reactive RPGs that detonate when surrounded by mass (aka *a body* ). It has also been said of Space Marines that nothing that big should move that fast; they can sprint upwards of 55-60 mph. Imagine a full ton of enraged superhuman in tank-level armour barreling down on you at highway speeds. I don't know about you, but I'd shit myself.
    They are models of killing efficiency. They are His Angels of Death, and they shall know no fear.

    The fun thing about this is that even people who are deep into the WH40K lore were in part wondering what was going on, because the Happy Fun Ball antagonists were entirely a fan creation. Supposedly, there's a very obscure alien race from the canon setting that comes somewhat close, and when the absolute deepest of the Deeplore Nerds were like "OMG, you made them the bad guys?!?", the creator said more or less "Oh that's neat, I never heard of those before. I see where you might see some similarities, but my guys weren't that."

    to get a space marine you should take 100 11-13y.o children from their families, push them hard through months of deadly training. Then you have 10 children left alive and well, put them on a surgeon's table, give em 2nd heart, 3rd lung, a bunch of small but very important organs, and a black shell - 2nd skin under the normal one which contains ports for armor connection . Then you have 1-3 children who survived it. Push them hard through years of deadly training even more. Give them power armor with a bunch of cool stuff inside, like stimulators, magnet boots, a set of artificial muscles, bolter, which shoots with small rocket projectiles. and here you go :)

      With his different videos now, I suggest that reactors watch the 40k timeline first, then the 2 40k faction videos, and then if they are interested in the Space Marines, they can do the Space Marine Legions video. I'm not big on the Legions video because it feels like more meme that fact, which is fine for the experienced viewer, but newer reactors usually walk away confused or misunderstanding key aspects of some of the legions. I'd much prefer Arbitor Ian's Heresy 101 series to learn about the history of the legions over bricky's.

    The "sci-fi Knights Templar" is most accurate for the chapter called "The Black Templars". Most of the other Astartes chapters are less religious than the average human in 40k. The man that was preying is known as an Inquisitor; a people with power second only to the Emperor himself. Their job is to root out heresy wherever they find it, be it xenos, hereticus, or even internal corruption. The man was also a psyker; essentially a space wizard. They can do all kinds of tricks: read minds, telekinesis, launch lightning, anything. However, they have to use the Warp to do so and that plane is inhabited by Daemons. If a psyker is possessed by a Warp entity, then they need to die before possession is complete, otherwise, they become a host for a Daemon which MUCH harder to kill.

    You asked if they were a hive mind, because you can't hear them speaking. The short answer is no.
    When they speak, they do have radios in their heavily armored helmets, so you won't really hear much from the outside unless they either want you to via a loudspeaker, or they are yelling. If you notice when the Marine commanders told the one marine trooper something and he sprinted out of the room with the orb, you can hear a little of him through the helmet saying "Get them out of there!" or something similar.
    But also, Marines are elite troops with likely hundreds of years of service together, and so they don't need to communicate very much in a battle to understand what they each are doing.

    Clone Troopers is.... both not accurate, but kind of close.
    Space Marine Initiates are chosen from regular humans on regular Imperial worlds. Some are recruited from Hive Worlds, where they're part of a gang vying for control of territory, others recruited from some harsh world where only the strongest of the strong can survive.
    These Initiates stand out from the crowd, and are noticed by a Chaplain of the Chapter. Once chosen, in their early teens, typically, they undergo severe physical and mental training, the type that would make the Spartan training from 300 look like a playground. They also receive, over the course of their training, 19 new organs, some implanted, and some induced to grow through genetic manipulation. Their ribcage becomes and interleaved carapace of Ceramite. Their bones and muscle mass grow significantly, turning them into titans among normal men. Through psychological conditioning, they gain a fanatical devotion to their Chapter and to The God Emperor of Mankind.
    And with how powerful you see them here against normal soldiers and against a pair of Pyskers..... now know that there are things that want to destroy Humanity that even Space Marines struggle with.

The animation didn't show them talking, because their suits are soundproof and they're all connected to each other through radio (called vox). All the humans are religious zealots who believe their leader is an actual god (and at this point he might be, he's the most powerful psychic in existence). But to tell you that the lore is crazy extensive, there's a single storyline called the horse heresy, that book series is I think over 50 books of this point. Keep in mind that's probably the most important story in all 40k, but still that's a single storyline.

    2:38 - Unfortunately, it was very much a "join or die" situation. Games Workshop put the foot down on fan animations because they want to push everybody to Warhammer+, which is their own streaming service with nothing but Warhammer content (Sigmar and 40K both). On the upside, they hired amazing talent from the community. On the downside, a lot of beloved fan works cancelled and some animators stopped making 40K content altogether. I think Flash Gitz is the only animation channel that has the guts to make animations that involve anything that remotely resembles a Space Marine.

    "Its almost like these guys are clone troopers or something." In a way, yes. They were normal human kids, albeit the tough ones from tougher planets, who are then geneticly and surgically altered via injection, genetharapy, and the implantation of custom-made artificial organs to make an 8 foot tall gorila-man that gets stuffed into some power armor and made into a religious zealot for the God-EMperor of Mankind... and yet they still die in droves when fighting alien forces.

    Side note: the Space Marines are super humans given enhanced organs and cybernetics depending on the specific space marine chapters they are part of in addition of enhanced genetic profile from one of the Primarchs who are the sons of the Emperor of Mankind who leads humanity in the 40k universe. To put it lightly. And the metal studs on the Space Marines head are service studs, signifying his centuries in service as a Space Marines, since he has 3 studs he's been a space marine for 300 years at least.

    Far from clone troopers. Space Marines are the opposite of SW Storm Troopers. An average human in 40K May never see an Astartes their entire life. And if you are an average citizen and the Space Marines show up on your planet you better get on the first ship off the planet because something really serious is going down.

    U said no prisoners? Damn right, there might be forces that prefer prisoners, as the dark eldar, but trust me on that. U dont want to be a prisoners? Any imaginable death is far better then being a captive of the dark eldar. Go and watch Bricky Vidoes, every faction explained and every space marine legion in a nutshel. A very good start for your journey into the grim dark future.
    Let me share u a few basic informations:
    The Astartes, or better known as the Space Marines, or Angels of the Emperor, are genetical modified super soldiers that put every super soldier u can imagine to shame. They are viewed as demi gods and that "clunky" armor, nah not rly, did u see the guy sprinting? Look up the start of Astartes, u might realize what monstroues people are in those armors, regular humans walking on the side, go and take a look and rethink. ;) It is actual said, nothing that big should be able to move that fast. It is actual extremly terrifiying, think of a giant super human in literaly a ton of power armor that makes him even stronger, faster and tough as a fucking battle tank. And the weapons, oh bois, thats not a rifle if u thought so, its basicly a gun firing rocket propelled grenades as "rounds". And the armor is far more then just a armor, u saw when the eys socket get cracket infight, what u see there, red shinign stuff, actual different types of cameras giving informations to the wearer, shown inside visors inside the helmet and, or, via link straight to the Astartes brain. Armos has everything u can imagine, aimbot included, not that they would really need it, but they got it anyway.

    Would suggest Bricky but with a huge but. He mixes memes and screws up a few lore facts. He's not a savant in warhammer lore but he's fun. You want a savant, go Lutien just be warned he's going to go iff on tangents that could be summed up must faster and a more entertaining way. Bricky on the other had is very entertaining, just don't be surprised if another creator has a totally diffrent take on something.

    A reminder that Games Workshop hates the fan community and all fan content and are hell-bent on destroying the IP they own.

      @@WeAINTseenITREACTIONS It really does suck. The fan community created an absolute golden age of fan content around WH40k that brought in legions of new people, and GW decided there must be a market for it so they destroyed every single one with a legal Cease & Desist and then created Warhammer+, their streaming service. No one has heard anything from this creator since they did that.
      Their streaming service has been a near complete failure, costing them tons of money and almost all community goodwill. They didn't learn from Nintendo's overly-litigious actions against their fans at all. Hell, they've never even learned from their own no matter how many times it blows up in their face.
      I'm hoping someday better people get in control of the IP. This setting is so ripe for potential it's actually mind-boggling.

    The owners of the WH40K are treating a franchise that could have become popular not only among fans. To do this, you need to take a person like the author of this video and give him the money to give his best. This fan work has something that modern Hollywood films lack - a complete script, logic, thoughtfulness and attention to the universe. Because lately it’s very fashionable to make films/series without reading books/without knowing the universe you’re filming about, and even be proud of it. Sorry for the Google translation.

    So you meantioned them being a hive mind or telepathic and the answer is no. Those things absolutely exist in this unaverse, but the Astartes, or Space Marines, have helmet to helmet vox. If they don't want anyone outside of their armor to hear them speak, they just switch their speakers off. All communication is helmet to helmet, man to man. And they are just men. Heavily augmented men, but men all the same.

    If you are really interested in lore, stay away from bricky. He is a meme channel, not a lore channel. I suggest Templin Institute, their videos on 40k are short and accurate. If it doesn't cut it, try Lutein or sandman of terra. For great stories, try baldermort or A Vox in the Void, they really have great stories. Or if you just want more cool videos like this, search sodaz videos, he got couple of good ones. Dread fall and walking dread are good ones too. You can find more fan made stuff, but 9th and 10th edition videos and game videos are also quite good.

      @@grantharriman284 I can name several mistakes he which portrays as lore, but the worst one is, his idiotic take "no good guys in 40k" which is completely wrong. If nothing else, lamenters exist. Memes are fun, but you need to know the lore first to even understand it. What people do by suggesting bricky is like recommending reddit meme page of lord of the rings even before people read the books or watch the movies.

    • @grantharriman284
      @grantharriman284 11 місяців тому

      @@randomdude8202 First; Lamenters do not break from the usual Space Marine pattern of being the tip of the spear wielded by the xenophobic religious zealots that are the Imperium of Man. They are still a subordinate faction to a massive evil. They are sympathetic to the audience because they have such massive misfortune, and they do admittedly risk their lives to defend civilians on multiple occasion, but it's not like they are out here trying to make peace with rebels or offer traitor marines an option to coexist peacefully. They also still have the red thirst drinking blood stuff going on, and the black rage showed up too as the lore kept going. They have the same flaws and dark secrets as any other Blood Raven successor chapter. They are not "good guys", they are just sympathetic bad guys.
      Second, you seem to be prioritizing a by rote almost academic approach to this universe, and that comes at the direct expense of any contact with the community of other people who enjoy the universe as well. That's probably the worst way to approach this universe I could think of.
      Bricky is ideal for introducing people into the community and getting them up to speed so they can actually participate in discussions with other members of that community and have a good time. If you give them nothing but raw lore with none of the community discussion what are they gonna do when somebody butchers Blueball Gulliweeny's name? They are gonna be thoroughly confused.
      Bricky gets them enough lore that they can pick up pretty much any 40k standalone novel or series and figure it out while also giving them a good starting point for the community. He isn't trying to write a sourcebook, he's trying to make the universe accessible and entertaining. He succeeds.
