How to do a Blended Distressed Paint Finish

  • I recently posted pictures of a bar I painted on the IOD Creative tribe group and several people asked if I could show the technique I used to create the piece in a video. To keep things simple I have shown this painting technique on a small table . However it's the exact same way that I painted my bar.
    Step one
    I applied Annie Sloan's old ochre to the table using a stippling method covering the whole piece.
    Step two
    I then applied French linen and olive. both by Annie Sloan again stippling and alternating the stippling. mixing and mashing and blending the two together.
    Step three
    After the paint was completely dry I applied some florals from the IOD transfer brocante.
    Step four
    Then I distressed my edges using a rough grit sand paper and a wet cloth.
    Step five
    I then applied CV clear wax all over the piece to completely seal it.
    Step six
    I applied dark and white wax to create highlights and lowlights to the table and add depth giving it an aged feel.
    I hope this is useful but this technique can be used with lots of colours and shades and is easily achieved.
    Happy creating
    Lel X ❤️

    You are much braver (and neater) than I am. Probably the first thing I would do is dip my scarf into the paint. Then massive amounts of Old Ochre would smear across the bustline and belly. And finally, I would have paint all over my bracelet, as well as my hands and nose.

    Again, a beautiful piece with many layers.
    I have a question that I hope you will be able to answer… I have an old (60s-70s) French Provincial laminate dresser that I am redoing to use in my living room under the tv.
    I used an oil based primer. I bought a very pale green latex semi gloss paint. [this is the first piece of furniture I’ve painted]. I’m leaning a ton from your videos.
    Anyhow, can I use dark wax to give the latex paint some depth? Or will it not stick? I bought a satin polyurethane to put on as a sealer.

    • @MadebyMarley
      @MadebyMarley  Рік тому

      Hi Susan thanks for your question sorry its taken a while to reply back I have had a sick bug.
      I don't use the paints you have used as I only use chalk paint so I think I'm correct. I can't see any reason why you couldn't use wax to add depth however I would apply your sealer then your wax it should then cure as normal applying the wax before your sealer could be an issue as your sealer will not adhere.
      Hope this makes sense x

      No Tracie I didn't however usually I do. It had been drying for a few days and I knew it would stick. Generally I usually always do especially if I'm in the studio in the stable. I use furniture laquer under and over my transfers.
      Thanks for watching ❤️

    Thank you for sharing stippling technique. It's pretty cool.
    Now, this question is neither here nor there, but i am just curious as to why you didn't fill in the little nicks and dents with wood filler. Is it because the wood filler doesn't stay put in small places like that or is it because you chose to keep them to add character to this piece?
    Thank you.

    • @MadebyMarley
      @MadebyMarley  Рік тому +1

      I didn't fill them because I don't try to make furniture new.... Its old unless there is a huge hole I don't use fillers..... Vintage and antique furniture is old and has charm and I think that this come from ware and tear that should not be covered up.... Its just my opinion.... If you are an Annie Sloan follower stippling and and paint should keep the charm.
      Thanks for the comment eve

      @@MadebyMarley thank you for taking the time to respond and to explain. I was just wondering. I see 2 extremes in furniture upcycling. On one hand, some people rebuild old furniture pieces and make them better than they were originally, i.e., perfect! On the other end of the spectrum, upcylers celebrate the worn down look and add more chipped off paint and fun stuff. I don't seem to fit in either category.
      I am coming from "perfectionist" school and am still trying to find my own "groove". I am not brave enough, at this moment, to let dents and chips just be. But, perfection is something i can never reach. I might be different in 6 months from now. I am changing rather quickly these days. Thank you

      Ahhh I get it I see two camps furniture restorers who want to reset the furniture. I am an artist being a furniture artist doesn't mean in the background that my furniture is not sound or has not been fixed it just if you Consider a canvas when you start painting on a canvas you want to lay down texture you need a heavy body applied to highlight and enhance your work.
      Furniture restorers are not artists and I am not a restorer ( although I could) we are all different and doing our own thing.
      If you want everything to be perfect it can often be difficult to start a project because you fear it will not live up to your expectations.... And I understand what you are saying.... There could be a fine line in between for you... Perhaps a smooth factory reset of your work and a small well planned piece of art work on your furniture.... Nothing crazy and maybe on a drawer front... If you don't like it you could paint over it..... Its taken many years for me to feel comfortable as sometimes I would not be happy with my finished work for lots of reasons and sometimes it still happens but I'm comfortable just doing me and I don't worry about anyone else my journey is not there's and my mistakes have taught me so much... So I just show what I like....
      I hope this helps if you want to start start small x x x

    i have an old circle table that my mother-in-law had in her hall and she had plants on it and watered them there also. I'd like to use blues. i have a floral print on off-white material. Some of the cushions are blue ticking. So same as you did this table but with blues. i don't know what color to use.

    • @MadebyMarley
      @MadebyMarley  2 роки тому

      I use Annie Sloan paint Linda so I'm not sure what paint you use. I would suggest a light blue as your first coat then a slightly darker blue and maybe a off white or a grey white to go over it with this will prevent it getting two dark.
      However if your looking for a slightly darker blue start with a grey and blend a blue colour and a slightly darker blue on top.
      Remember you don't need to run out and buy more paint just by adding a little white or black can turn your blue into 3 shades that will all work together.
      I'm hoping I have answered your question but if your insure just get back to me. I am always really happy to help.
      Lel X ❤️
      If you use Annie Sloan I think old ochre Louis blue and maybe Greek blue...X
