Motorcycle Coils - Testing Primary and Secondry Resistance.

  • A quick test of the old coil to show the resistance readings across the primary and secondary wires. Nothing wrong with this coil but the HT Lead was shot so had to replace. You must make sure you know the resistance readings you are looking for so check your manual against not just make and model but also the year.

    Check the resistance without the plug cap, it could have 5k ohms resister in it, it might say on the side of the cap. It's for suppression.

    All the bike coils are actually the same.
    Primary if zero ohm thats fantastic
    Secondary not higher than 7k ohm
    And you can install a zero resistance spark plug also.

    Thank you for a great instruction video. I have a bike with 2 x CDI's powering 2 spark plugs each. I have a no spark situation at the plugs in caps. Using your method I have a Primary figure of 4.3 ohms on the LH CDI and fluctuating 4.3-5.1 ohms on the RH CDI. The manual says Primary should be 2.3-3.5 ohms. The Secondary on all 4 leads/caps is ZERO no reading at all, Manual says 12-13K ohms. I am thinking that both CDI's are toast but strange that both have tossed it in at the same time and also strange not even a reading for any secondary.

    • @memybikeni9931

      So the coils do sound bad, high resistance and variable resistance on the primaries, is clear cut, open circuit on the secondaries. Firstly though make sure you are testing the secondaries correctly. When you have one coil with two plug wires, test across the two plug wires, not primary to secondary, like you would with a single plug. If you still have nothing, take the plug caps off, probe directly into the wire. Trim the wire back, take the wire out, go straight into the coil terminal if you can. The virago ones are all moulded of course, but it sounds like yours are dead. It’s not unusual for both to go bad, one can over load the other if one fails. At least I think that’s why you were referring to when you said CDI, you meant coil ?

It's a 27yr old Ninja bike 1997 zx9r so I think I have got my money's worth out of the coils:-) The point of sale vendors refer to them as CDI's so I am picking up the term from that, but yes coils in the manual. I tested across the two plug wires and get a reading flash up and disappear quickly with wiggling the probes of 19K. I have ordered two new coils, hopefully will generate a spark for me.

      @@johnbaxter85 sounds like that’s your fix. So the CDIs are specifically the ignition units that send the timed power to the coils, they are something different so maybe the seller was using the wrong term or just getting your wires crossed, excuse the pun.

      Hi mate, it’s a difficult one to diagnose from a distance, very often takes a poke around. I’d suggest starting at the plug for spark, then cap with plug out, HT lead minus the cap, low tension wires into the coils, then back to the low tension output from the igniter. Connector into the igniter, connection from the battery. Have a good look round the wiring loom for any chafing, and grounding, check the side stand switch if fitted, clutch switch if fitted, and the dumbest thing, the kill switch. Check the voltage output from the pulsar coil and make sure that connected to the igniter properly. Check for resistance across the pulsar coil out put. Go back to the main coil and test for resistance over the primaries and the secondaries. Somewhere in there is going to be the issue. What will happen is you’ll go so far back and see there is a power break somewhere or a high resistance, I.e in the main coil, and that will isolate your issue.

    • @memybikeni9931

      So continuity means resistance, and depending on your bike should read a certain value. Across the primaries, the two pins on the coil, 3 - 5 ohms typically, so yes continuity, with low resistance reading, and across the secondary, either pin on the coil against the other end of the HT lead, 12-14,000 ohms needed, so again yes resistance should be seen, high ohms. Hi spoke to you before. Have just tested ignition coil on my DRZ. Secondary test seems ok showing correct resistance. Primary however reads 0.000 ohms resistance. Has this coil had it. Thanks Pete

    • @memybikeni9931
      @memybikeni9931  2 роки тому

      So if you have just tested the secondary, then you may have the meter set high at around 20,000 ohms, as you’ll be looking for a reading in the 10-20k range. If you have not then dialled it down for the primary this may be your issue. As you are only looking for about 4-6 ohms you should set it to the lowest ohms reading setting, e,g 200 ohms. It should then register the lower reading that you are looking for. If it’s set at 20k still it’ll likely not register and show as zero. Nothing has zero unless it’s a superconductor. It’ll either show something or open circuit. If it is still truly showing zero after that then you have a broken multimeter I’d say, but my guess is this is the issue 😊

      So to test the primary where there is only one lead you just place one of your multimeter probes on the input and the other to the grounding block, as that is the ground rather than a 2nd lead running back to ground. • @memybikeni9931
      @memybikeni9931  3 роки тому +2

      make sure you have your multimeter ohms setting just higher than the reading you are looking for, as the primary should be 3.5-4.5 ohms and if you have set the meter to very high “in the thousands” setting the reading may be a false 0.00, set it to about 20ohms for the primary reading. Then turn it up for the secondary to about 20,000 ohms, and see what you get. If you do that and still get the same readings yes it’s a pretty good indication it’s fried as it seems you don’t have continuity across the primaries. If the reading are fine after you have done that then I’d replace the coil as routine as you may have a leaky HT lead and it’s all moulded of course. I’d also give the plug well a good clear, replace the plug, clean up the terminals on the LT cables and see if that makes any difference. As a quick measure, swap the coils and plugs over to see if the problem switches to the other cylinder 😁

    • @memybikeni9931
      @memybikeni9931  3 роки тому

      So I assume you mean the primaries ? So bear in mind nothing has zero resistance except super conductors and you’d expect you see something just through your probes, so if it shows ‘0’ then you may have the multimeter set on a very high Ohms reading of say 2000 or above and due to the sensitivity of your meter it’s just zeros out, so make sure it’s set no higher than 200 to get a reading in the 2-6 Ohms range. If you mean it’s showing ‘I’ as in an open circuit/infinite resistance then there is a break and it’s dead. If it is showing truly zero when you check the meter settings then there is likely a short in the windings and it should be replaced. If you mean the secondaries which I don’t think you do, and you have the meter set correctly at 20k ohms or above and it is showing 0 Ohms rather that ‘I’ infinite resistance, then as there is no physical connection between the windings it’s more likely you have a short. As the meter is set too high to read a low resistance value, again it will show zero resistance due to the meter calibration. Hope that makes sense.
