    Regarding learning the MCDU, can’t stress enough the use of desktop simulators with good 3rd party addon aircraft that models these systems with high fidelity so you can practice on your own. The Fenix A320 taught me, so by the time I jumped into a level D in Orlando I already knew how to program as well as how the other systems worked. For Boeing, PMDG gives you an extraordinary model of the 737 NG, which line training captains/type rating examiners use to teach online courses and demonstrations since they faithfully model about 95% or more of the plane and its systems. And we’re not just talking the basics, you can do advanced and even trivial work with the MCDU in these sims today. Really helps with not being overwhelmed when you do an actual type rating for one of these aircraft.

    Love it guys! I have my sights set on SkyWest hopefully in about a year. Just getting back into flying now after a 13yr hiatus - life happened lol. Looking forward to it and enjoying the process.
    Love your attitudes and perspectives. Thanks for sharing guys.

    Great discussion on the MCDU and FMS. I have the sim models mentioned below PMDG and other "study level" models with significantly modeled systems.

    Love the kid intro about the podcast! Looking to possibly fly for SkyWest. Do they have a cadet program like Envoy That allows me to apply and receive mentorship once I get my private pilot certificate?

    Huge problem with pilot careers in the US relate to hours and costs. In the US, you need 1,500 hours in order to get hired at an airline like Skywest. But since one is limited to 1,000 hours of flying per year, that makes it two years while you get your instrument ratings. Then you need to get certified to fly jets. And the costs of flight school can exceed $100,000 in that time. In the EU, the second officer can start flying at 500 flight hours, so they can go from props like the 172 to the a320 in the span of just a few months.

      Everything has its price. Pay it or don’t.

    • @Ready4Pushback
      @Ready4Pushback  4 місяці тому

      You are correct. It is expensive. You have to pay with time or money. This is the ever present quandary about this job. EU flying does get you in a jet faster albeit at a much lower wage.

    Training is thorough, and most of the instructors are committed to setting you up for success. There will always be more of a sink-or-swim mentality with the airlines because of training costs, schedule, and the available applicant pool, and SkyWest is no exception. It isn't all peachy; forced transition upgrades, vacation, and training contracts are some points I would research before making the jump. No union is a double edged sword, and a dealbreaker for some. Line flying with OO is great, and I enjoy the vast majority of people I work with. Good travel benefits, relatively quick upgrade times, and job security in a fluid industry. Lots of resources and reasonably good operational software make day to day ops mostly smooth. Great emphasis on hand flying here, at least on the CRJ side. I'm happy I joined SkyWest.

  • @JDK3728
    @JDK3728 Місяць тому

    Right now people need to take the jobs that are available, but going to a company with a union is better. Hopefully skywest will vote in ALPA, because right now skywest pilots don’t have a contract , they have an agreement which management can change when ever they like.
    Skywest is the only 121 that is a non union carrier in US.
    I am not discouraging anybody from joining due to this issue, but I would say it’s something that needs to be researched
    It would be cool if someone did a video on that topic. So potential new pilots know the - that come with not having a union. But also the costs of having one
