Good to see some coverage for the Erica Synths folks. Met their founder at Frankfurt Musikmesse in 2015, and was super impressed by his enthusiasm and love of what he does. And a very cool idea in this little package of modules...
that intro was awesome
Mine has two vco's. better.
this looks terribly fun, the effects really do polish it alot - it's like a little modular groovebox!
@ 18:03 it sounds like How It's Made music
This has some of the best music-made-in-a-tutorial-or-review.
Very compact system, covers a lot of usable modules. If you are short on space this is a great little system. If you are not short on space I think it is a little too crowded. All in all Erica did a nice job, I like their style.
I have a few of these little guys in my system, LOVE LOVE LOVE them!
Wow the Polivoks VCF sounds really fantastic and so different.
Nice review Edd. Every time I watch a Sonicstate review, I always get that itch to play with synths so I turn everything on and get lost in sound. Just got some brand new cheap ass analog pedals too which adds to the fun.
Very cool. I do like the VCO & DSP modules.
Great review Edd and loving the outro jam as well, very spacey.
I have the drum and polivoks filter planned for my small live rig. Erica did a great job with these. The whole point of eurorack is small form factor, at least they get it.
LOVE the iphone interface and how you pull that off. that was the final selling point for me, will buy.
loving that extensive review. the pico sounds great and inspiring to me. thanks for your review again
Cool video, and damn cool little modular setup. But seems there's many "hidden" features you need to know where is to get any kind of workflow going. As is always the trade off when pushing loads of features into a small space. Which must be said is impressive here.
Currently got a System 500 home on loan which I'm making a video series on, quite the different beast, but all this modular stuff is mighty fun and impressive.
Really like the opening to this video!
great sound examples and jams!
Thanks for the demo Edd! I can see the Drums and DSP in my future (as I believe the DSP can run code from Spin Semi, the same as used on the ZDSP) - thank you!
Looks like science to fully grasp the potential of this thing. Then again I feel like I want to study again.
Returning to this in 2019 hoping the Pico Voice was covered. The DSP is definitely different now, this review must be a pre-production version they eventually changed. Mine has 4 delays (Mono, stereo, pitch, granular), 2 reverbs (regular, saturation), Leslie rotary/hp, overdrive/bitcrusher. Which sounds pretty damn good! The mono and stereo delays are clean, the 2 reverbs seem more robust than the few in the video. Erica stuff is just lovely.
Wow, that sounds so good
Grabbing that vco for sure
Speaking as a classical musician (clarinet/alto sax), this is crazy! One very small complaint - too many Picos at the bottom
Excellent review.
while I have and enjoy the pico drum, I certainly wouldn't want an entire system based on these tiny modules. I can see their value as useful functional gap fillers, but playing and tweaking tiny controls and crammed panels quickly becomes frustrating when compared with larger ergonomically comfortable designs. Eurorack is already small enough without needing to cram everything into 2 or 3 hp. I'd certainly want more than one oscillator too.
I think the attraction is supposed to be that this is the kind of thing you can play with whole sitting on the couch, or throw in a backpack and take out of your normal workspace etc.
It's also a brilliant little package for someone who wants to get into modular but isn't quite ready for going the whole hog. One self-contained box that has everything you need to learn the principles is great.
very cool review
But where's the PWM?
thats why nick isnt reviewing it lol
lool
And does it have aftertouch?
mightlife: It's right next to the PMS & STD.
And why doesn’t go right down to zero!?
Sounds like a killer system! Doesn't look like I can buy the whole system in a bundle like in the video though, which is a bummer.
Very nice. I like...It's a bit of a Learning Curve tho. but i am impressed. Thanks for sharing this
I need these.
polyvoks and DSP sound fantastic, and drum programming via phone or laptop is ingenious. think sonically VCO is the weakest link- the "analog" waves sound somewhat thin and lifeless. digital arent much better, and it cannot morph btwn them (only in lfo mode), you hear little glitch on wave change each time. a Dixie or two would bring this on another sonic level.
also cant escape thinking, having an entire pico system will get incredibly fiddly, and spagetti messy..aside from obviuos cuteness factor, dont think a system like this will be practical, especially not when performing. a selection of these miniscule problem solvers in combo with regular sized euro modules seems like much more viable scenario.
The ending is cool
Wow this thing is sweet
My Siri opened up at 1:25 hahaha - VCHey :D
Sounds incredible. Do you know if there's a way to add groove/shuffle to the sequences?
Great! Thank you.
Im now looking at the Pico III Eurorack. Why Eurorack? I had this idea to put it in a Moog 60hp case which gives me room to add a few Pico modules which I feel are lacking in the standard Pico III system.
That's what i did.
@@stephenroldan5107 Since the Moog case doesn’t have one, any recommendations for power supply for the 60hp case? I bought a kit to make my own then my soldering iron died...
@@symbiat0 Unfortunately ,Most my cases i get have the power supply already. Cases are so expensive that they better come with a power supply.
That being said i have bought a tip top audio zeus power supply for a case i made years ago and it's still going.cheap and it works very well.
@@stephenroldan5107 So if you buy a new Moog 60hp case, ie. not from a M32 that's been racked, it does not have a PSU :-( I will have a look at TipTop
@@symbiat0 Correct. It does not come with one.
I want one but the problem is the price is expensive and for that I'd rather have a full packaged Erica Synths system even if it is a little bit more expensive.
is there a way to make the beat process without the app
Is it just me or did he not mention the EG at all?
When he programs the sequence on the phone it doesn't upload the same samples he was using for the pattern? So like it just uploads the drum pattern and you select the samples with the two drum modules?
Very nice! What case and power supply are you using?
Very interesting set of modules. Sometimes the controls seem like a bit non-intuitive to me.
My Iphone 7 won't work with the app and I don't know how to connect via a windows laptop, someone please help x
I love it!
So this setup would be around 1500 euro?
Nice system and extremely nice demo but too pico for me dude.
Pity the prices aren't pico too! 100 euros for an oscillator.
you're complaining about €100 for an oscillator?.. Geez get a grip or get another hobby
Whats the price for this beast...?
From the website most modules are 100€ so probably about 1500 € +VAT.
Thanks, the price is not "mini"....
VTOLKits well the functionality isn't either :)
It's on their site: 1000€ + VAT (And shipping. And your country's customs).
Bought the 3 the sounds aggressive, nasty... money well spent
Edd from SOAS??
Is PICO Drum Programmer compatible Mac OS X ?
it runs as a google chrome app, so yes...
Price?
Michael Smith it doesnt look like they sell it as a complete system
It also doesn't look like they want to sell to people out of the EU.
yes its going to be available as a full system, want the price simply go to Erica synths site and ask, he is super responsive and friendly as a designer
ericasynths.lv/en/shop
I've bought direct from them before, and I'm in Canada
Can anyone point me to a video or some kind of educational output that explains the basics of modular synthesis. Im sure there are fundamental rules one goes by to navigate around these beautiful machines.
Try,the Tuesday Night Machines channel
Nairo Music also worth reading thru the newbie section of muffwiggler, there's plenty of really helpful people there to answer questions too.
Lol bleep, bloop, squirt, hiss, fart...listen to that analog warmth man.
logick3 except it's not analog, it's digital xD
Rhombus Labs Hybrid: VCO, drums, DSP and sequencers are digital; VCFs, VCAs, mixer and (I think) envelope are all analogue.
nop
No PWM. I'm surprised this thing was even reviewed. For Shame.
boring, could do this in 3 seconds in a daw
no one cares what you can do in your daw. Seriously nobody.
A daw? Wow
