  • The Erica Synths PICO System III is probably the least desirable looking modular system ever. But hey! This just beats its competition for features, making it the most versatile one. We'll prove this to you in this video.

    Patch Descriptions:
    01: PICO Voltage
This demo begins with the whole patch being sent through the BBD while I tweak its delay time by hand.
As I disconnect two cables, the output switches over to the one in back of the synth, thanks to
the mixers preexisting connections a.k.a. normalisations.
The master clock is VCEG 2 in looped (LFO) mode.
The saw LFO is patched to MODs clock input, and also to modulate the pulse width of VCO1 through an external attenuator. It clocks the sequencer too.
MOD takes the LFO signal from VCEG2 and multiplies its rate by two.
This way MODs pulse, random pulse and sample and hold outputs are synced to the 16th note measures of the beat.
MODs random pulse output is turned into kick drums using LPG2 as a pinged filter.
The random pulses are patched into LPG2s CV input and the resonance of LPG2 is set to a high value.
The sequencer acts a s a clock divider of the VCEG. The third step is the trigger+gate length for the snare.
The snare itself is the white noise coming from MOD, controlled by the VCOCTRL’s VCA, which is modulated by the SEQ’s CV output.
The pitched 16th notes happen when the MOD’s pulse output (through an attenuator) is high. And you don’t hear it when low - as there’s no VCA for gating.
Bass is a mix of VCO2’s triangle and shape output.
LPG1 is set to be a VCA and it is modulated by VCEG1 that has a high attack setting.
Since there’s no VCA or filter left, the shape parameter is used to to “gate” sound: it’s almost silent when it’s at maximum.
For this, the shape parameter is modulated by MOD’s Sample and Hold.
    --------------
    02: PICO Sleep
A pulse wave with intensive pulse width modulation with high attack starts the patch together with a simple melody from VCO2.
The frequency of the melody from VCO2 is divided by using MOD as a sub oscillator.
The whole sound goes through a reverb with long decay.

How great this synthesizer is! We loved to create this video!

This video is incredible. The amount you're able to squeeze out of this thing is seriously inspiring.
I also love how many pretty sounds you made with it--the majority of demos of this synth are so grungy/dirty sounding. That can be cool, but this video shows off the versatility so much better.

I almost decided to sell my Pico System 3 and now after I discovered your video, I understand that the issue is in me and not in the synth. Will continue learning it! :)

    Nice video!
Such a cool piece of gear, I dig it a lot. Aaaand I am also constantly thinking of getting one. Which is crazy, because I am already running a pretty decently sized rack but..... that thing is just so cool! :D
I imagine it a great thing being able to take a mini modular synth on the road via battery power and just jam wherever you are with that beast, haha.
Thanks, for uploading. Good job on making me want to spend 400 bugs :p

i just got myself the Pico3 standalone but my problem is I have an Akai MPK Mini which I can't use with the PICO3. I have a TE KO2 and I'm thinking of ways to go crazy on my Pico3. Any Advice? I'm using an Arturia Minifuse2. Can I put the Pico3 to the MIDI on the Minifuse and MPK Mini on the Minifuse USB HUB. i really could use some advise. Your video is making me bat shit crazy at my options.Thank you for its inspirational.

Wow, this is amazing. I own a pico system 3, but I'm far away to create that kind of patches. It's my first full modular system and it's hard to learn.

We are so glad you enjoyed! We made the patch notes, but the description is too short. So here you go:
      08: PICO Hype
VCO2 starts the patch with long pad sounds out of its SHAPE output.
No VCA or filter is used to interrupt this sound, just a mixer channel to fade it in.
VCO1s PULSE output comes in with a filter sweep.
The pulse width is modulated heavily by one of the envelopes that is switched into LOOP mode (LFO).
Everything so far is going into the Alesis reverb.
The MOD section is used as a sub oscillator.
VCO2s triangle output is patched into the the clock input of MOD.
The RATE is set to half sothe MOD outputs (SINE and PULSE) will be one octave below VCO2.
The resulting sub Sine wave is patched into a mixer channel on the external mixer skipping the reverb path.
It was brought in earlier by turning the CH1 knob on the external mixer.
The PULSE output of MOD (sits also one octave lower and follows the pad melody) is brought in by a more resonant filter sweep. (LPG2)
This voice is routed through the reverb as well.
LPG1 is filtering the PWM melody.
Both filters open slowly then the patch ends suddenly as I pull the reverbs input and let its decay ring.

what are those black boxes inline with the cables?

    • @soundriadotcom

Glad you asked! Those are the RYO Airtenuators. Pico lacks of attenuators on its own, but it is easy to add them when needed. Perhaps with these. www.thonk.co.uk/shop/ryo-airtenuator/
