  • Episode 29: Fasting And Kidney Disease: A guide to improving kidney function with intermittent fasting. Is fasting and kidney disease safe or can it cause additional kidney damage? I found intermittent fasting helpful for me during my fight against chronic kidney disease and I strongly recommend you talk to your doctor to see if intermittent fasting may be a beneficial part of your strategy to fight chronic kidney disease and improve your kidney function. The results of intermittent fasting before and after can be shocking - in a good way.
To learn more about the strategy I used in fighting and beating Chronic Kidney Disease, visit www.DadviceTV.com/

Intermittent fasting is eating on a set schedule while fasting (not eating) for certain prolonged periods of time. Can have water, unsweetened tea or coffee during the fasting period, but that is all.
Lots of researching showing the potential benefits of intermittent fasting for a number of issues people face. It is very common and effective with certain diets, like the Keto diet. But what about a chronic kidney disease diet?
As mentioned, you can only have water, unsweetened tea, and unsweetened coffee during the intermittent fasting period. It is a lot easier than you think! You are not going to go a whole day without eating! I myself fast for about 18 hours every day. There are fasting methods where you don’t eat for an entire day, but that is just too difficult, and I have found no data showing that is any better than the partial fasting I’m talking about.
The easiest way to take advantage of intermittent fasting is to extend the fasting you are already doing while you are asleep. I eat my first meal around noon, then a snack a few hours later, and then finish my dinner by 6pm. That 6-hour window is when I eat, the rest of the day, including while I am asleep, I’m fasting.
You may not be able to change over to an 18 hour fast every day - you may need to work yourself up to it, and the common target is 16 hours of fasting with an 8-hour window for eating. For most people they push their first meal, typically breakfast, later and eat dinner earlier. Then a week or so later they do that same thing again, shortening their eating window and increasing their fasting window.
Is it helpful for Kidney Disease patients?
First, you always need to speak to your health care team before making any changes to your diet or treatment plan. But for me, it was a game changer, both while on the renal diet from stage 5 to stage 3, and now while on the Keto diet. My renal dietitian recommended it to me and I’ve been doing it since shortly after being diagnosed.
Benefits of Intermittent Fasting and kidney disease:
    • It certainly helps your body with inflammation - and that is something everyone with kidney disease should be concerned about. Putting stress on your kidneys causes inflammation which decreased their filtering ability, can damage more nephrons (the little filters), which drops your GFR and increases waste and toxins in your blood.
    • It also helps your body manage the stress placed on it.
    • It can help promote and accelerate weight loss - Lose weight fast!
    • Helps manage and regulate your blood sugar. Important to keep an eye they don’t go to low if you are diabetic. Your health care team can help you there.
    • Your kidneys are now focused on processing the current state of your blood and not fighting against digestion which is constantly changing it.
Eat your more fatty foods and lower carbs during your last meal of the day. The fat keeps you feeling full and makes it possible to go your entire fasting window without snacking. Lower carbs have been shown to help you sleep better, and getting sleep is very important for all of us.
Fasting is much easier for men. It is harder for women due to hormone levels but don’t let that stop you if your health care team recommends intermittent fasting for you.
To help ease yourself into this schedule, pick 2 non-consecutive days to do this first, such as a Monday and Wednesday. Do a 12 hour fast - finish dinner by 7pm and don’t eat again until 7am on those days. On those days don’t do heavy exercise, just stick to the basics like walking, yoga, and playing with the kids. You can then slowly expand this to more days, then more hours until you find the right balance for you.

Hey James, I have been watching your videos off and on for a while now. Very happy you have improved your Kidney function and given so much hope to others who are affected by this. I have heard conflicting results regarding fasting effects on kidneys, so it's great to get your honest opinion on the matter. My question is have you done any research regarding stem cells on kidney function? Mesenchymal stem cells have been reportedly praised for reducing inflammation so I thought this could be a good topic. Thank you.

Hello, I a 58 year old female. My dad just past away. My doctor just told me my kidney function keeps going down, and now he wants me to go to see my urologist about the low kidney function of my one kidney that I have. I've been turning to youtube for the questions I had about it. Low and behold Dadvice comes up. It's like the holy spirit (pentecostals believe in this) is talking to me. I am 3rd stage kidney patient and looking at you am tempted to try IMF. But I m 77 yrs old and slim so would not like to lose weight. I would like to try the 12 hrs window. Can u guide me. My creatinine is 3.1 and I would like to avoid dialysis.

    • @DADVICETV
      @DADVICETV  5 років тому +1

@@josephinerodrigues1735 While most people use Intermittent Fasting to help accelerate weight loss, it is easy to adjust for that. If you eat enough calories during the eating-window, you can easily maintain, or even gain weight. Even with my reduced caloric intake, there have been weeks where I gained 3-5lbs due to not getting my exercise, even while on a Keto diet with Intermittent Fasting. The best way to ease into IMF is to start with an evening cut-off to stop eating. Pick a time that is comfortable for you, perhaps 8pm. Then dont eat or snack after that time until your first meal the next day. After a few days or a week, move the cut-off time an hour earlier, and maybe your first meal a half hour later. Continue doing this until you have comfortable created your fasting routine. For many people, they target 16 hours of fasting and 8 hours of eating. Eat a higher fat last meal to help keep you full longer and avoid hunger - and good fats are recommended. Your doctor can recommend fats to eat for you and help you with IMF - it is important to always keep your doctor in the loop. Good Luck!

@@maamedansowaa1520 It depends. If you already have kidney disease your body can not process many of the minerals in certain vegetables and fruits. For example spinach and bananas are killers. I don't see what gluten get's you, unless you have a wheat allergy - or inflammation caused by wheat. Most people benefit from a keto diet because it has no inflammation and many of the minerals in fruits and vegetables. Vegan diet might be good if you are healthy.

Great Video. One of the major benefits , which dadvice alluded to is the cleanup that your body does when its not actively processing injested food. It goes throw a cell review phase(aka maintenance), in which is uses any cells not running at optimal for energy, these cells are then replaced with new, when you have next meal(simplified). Also since insulin is low, your body will start utlising fat stores for energy, so its a win win

I am 54 and don't have kidney disease, but my GFR was dropping. In 2014, it was >90 (ideal). In 2016, it dropped to 89. In 2019, it dropped to 86. I started getting concerned about this trend and my doctor at the time said, "oh, you're just aging and it will continue to decline, as long as your gfr doesn't go under 70 you're fine". That didn't sit well with me because it seemed at the rate i was going, my gfr would be under 70 by the time i was in my 70's. Then, in August of '21 i started time restricted eating, specifically eating only within a 6-hour window (18/6). My reasons for taking up TRE were unrelated to my declining gfr, but imagine my surprise when 6 months later my bloodwork from my physical revealed that my gfr had gone up to 107! Quite the unexpected side benefit!

I was doing intermittent fasting for a few months, but was still urinating frequently and constipated at the same time. I then did a 3 day extended fast (several decaffeinated varieties), on the 3rd day the kidney stop shedding so much water, and stayed like that after I resumed eating. A month later I did it again (this time eating one mini cucumber for each meal), and it reduced it more. Now my urine is now more concentrated, and it’s been a few months since that last fast. I think I had too much sugar (from sugar, bread, pasta, potato, rice I’d eaten) stored in my body, and the kidney was expelled newly arrived sugar along with lots of water. A kitchen safe box was also handy.

At stage 2 you have LOTS of room in your diet which will make Keto even easier. I had to keep an eye on Potassium (Avocados and Tomatoes), Magnesium, and dairy. I kept my fats to good fats - no hamburger meat or hot dogs. A low carb diet would most likely benefit everyone and the extremely low carb of Keto can really help with weight loss, break insulin resistance, and help with diabetes.

HI, hope you are reading messges from old vids. I wrote you awhile ago when I first found, by accident I had stage3 CKD. It's a result of negligence which is still happening, it's a mess. Now it looks like I have autoimmune issues but appointments are so drawn out, who knows when I'll have answers. It's frustrating because I read all the literature and as many studies as I can get my hands on and I want to make sure I do not end up on dialysis but the doctors continued to not be concerned because I am so healthy. That's why they should be concerned and finding the cause so that I can stop the progress. I do everything on my end and most of the job my doctors should be doing. I have always lived a health and fitness life, my diet just gets cleaner and cleaner and cleaner. My gfr was normal, but too high for my vegetarian diet ages ago. I didn't know, I wasn't as involved in my health as I am now, always trusted doctors who let me go on with a vit D level under 20 (as I'm constantly going in for chronic issues) and didn't care I was in stage 1 even though I was healthy, perfect body mass, fit, young. I should have had an very high gfr.
FF to now when I'm dealing with so many chronic medical issues because I was ignored due to good health. Dealing with the anger is a full time job but have to stay as positive as possible and keep the stress away. Got gfr up 30 pts in just a few months, it goes up and down, but stays in 2. My kidneys don't seem to like my weight training but it's the only thing that keeps me sane and I've cut to a few hours a week, where before I was training as a competitive athlete. I don't have protein in the urine, YET, and I want to keep it that way. They've atrophied and are only 8.5 cm, nephrologist said there is no regeneration after 9 cm. One was already atrophied over a year ago, I found an ultrasound that was never reviewed by my doctor, one was good. Now they are both atrophied. I'm at the point where there isn't much cleaning left to do, so back to fasting it is. I started daily IF during the early days plus an extended fast whenever I felt the need. Everyone told me I was crazy, it was dangerous and I was going to get sick. I knew better since I was raised by health conscience hippies who is an evidence based health freak, aka, I have read the science my entire life. All of my critics are now doing it. I was traveling, living out of a suitcase for 8 years, the fasting became sporadic.
I know that organ tissue can regenerate with fasting but I've yet to find any study or anecdotal account showing this is true with the kidneys. If you-or anyone reading this- has any input, I would appreciate it. Do you have kidney atrophy? I have researched this to death and there is no reason my kidneys should have so much damage, other than autoimmune. Working like mad, researching, and taking a full body approach. Have got to get rid of inflmmation, 30 years of chronic illness, despite insanely healthy lifestyle, multiple cities, states, countries, and as I look through my labs I realize no one has bothered taking CRP or any other inflammatory marker lab until my nephrologist ran the ant-dna and it came back positive.
PS I've been passing bits of kidney stones for almost 2 months now, ER refused to do CT scan, nephrology appt is next week. It's like they want to keep me sick and in pain.

I wake up to these songs, shower (and dance) to these, and listen to this while walking every day. I try to keep only positive people around me, and I always remember that I'm doing this for more than me...I'm also doing it for my 2 little kids.
I've made a game out of improving my results. I focus on small things - like my Hemoglobins - then work to improve that 1 small thing. I can't fix everything, but I can improve 1 thing with each set of labs. Seeing the improvements motivates me even more.
The last thing is this - right here - my videos and website. It helps me to be productive, I feel good seeing others learning stuff and doing better. This is part of my treatment.
Together, all of this keeps me motivated and going. Plus I love helping animals and the healthier I am, the more dogs I can rescue and help find their forever homes.
