    A few days ago I was so craving your tomato soup, but no time to make a homemade one, and I texted my daughter when I get home we can have tomato soup and grilled cheese for supper. Meaning I would just have to do good old standby a can. She said oh yes that sounds yum. Well when I arrived home the house smelled amazing. I got upstairs and she said I am making the tomato soup. I could not believe it. She was roasting in the oven tomatoes from the garden, garlic and onions. She mixed them with one tin of canned soup to thicken. I said to her I can't believe this and told her that I had watched your video and that's what I really wanted a home made version. Whatever made her even think to do that and go all out I have no idea but was so happy. So I made the grilled cheese and it was lovely! And wow there are some great sweet potatoes! I checked mine that next day and they were very tiny at the top so now I have some hope maybe now that a week or so has passed there will be a few nice ones too :)

    I think digging sweet potatoes is one of my favorite things to watch on UA-cam. Your video was exciting! I grew them this Summer for the first time and it was so exciting😊❤.

    I live in Florida and the greatest thing I ever do to preserve tropical plants like pineapple, mango trees, papayas, dragon fruit is to put white Christmas lights lightly over them to have direct light and heat. It can dip to 17*F but usually high 20s. I cover with old sheets I get at estate sales. No small task but I never lose plants any more to cold just chemtrails they spray

    That was a wonderful harvest. I've heard that if you eat the sweet potatoes the day you harvest them, they aren't sweet yet. You need to wait for 2 weeks so the sugars develop and they sweeten.

    • @theheritagehousesc
      @theheritagehousesc 3 роки тому

      You are correct. They need a few days cure and to dry out and all the sugars to concentrate

    Homemade tomato soup and hot cocoa sounds like a great treat to me. Especially with one of your homemade cheese sandwiches :-)

    Awesome Chelsea! I've never been successful at growing sweet potatoes here in the PNW. Last year we built a high tunnel and you have inspired me to try growing them in there next year! I could feel your joy all the way over here! You go girl!

    When I was younger I would go to my grandma's and grandpa's we would pick up a lot of peanuts that didn't get in. The thrasher grandma would put some in the oven and we would have parched peanuts they were so good

    I have an oven fried green tomato recipe that’s a lot of fun and way less messy if you’d like to try it. Basically you want green tomatoes that are full sized slicers but haven’t turned yet. Preheat the oven to 400°F. Slice your tomatoes in 1/4 inch slices. Make one shallow dish/plate with some flour, salt and pepper, garlic powder, and a dash of cayenne if you have any. Make another dish with egg beaten with a splash of water, and a third with either panko, breadcrumbs, or cornmeal (you can even use crushed up plain cornflakes) seasoned like the flour. Coat each slice in flour, then egg, then breading. Put them on a cookie sheet lined with parchment or well greased. And then spray them lightly with oil. Put them in the oven for 10-15 minutes a side (the bottoms will brown first). Traditionally these are deep fried but to me the oil is messy and wasteful and I like them better this way. You can also make a homemade remoulade sauce for dipping which is a New Orleans style mustard sauce which goes particularly well with them.

    Chelsea.Chelsea.HeyChelsea. I had to stop for a second before I finished the video when you said Abundance kale. I've been haunting the internet looking for the seeds... Will you please sell some seeds? I'm assuming you're saving seeds. You're saving seeds, right? Please tell me you're saving seeds because I'm looking and for them, did I mention that? LOL, I'm partially kidding, I did order some Premier kale seeds and will plant them soon as a consolation. Anyway, can't find those little suckers anywhere and I've wanted them since you talked about them. Ok, back to our regularly scheduled program.

    Great harvest! Make salsa verde with green tomato’s. It is really good! Sweet potatoes need to cure for a few days to get sweet. I don’t cook mine till at least a week later. Actually they need 15-25 days for the sugars to get concentrated but I’m sure the kids won’t wait tgat long especially if you don’t grow them often. 😂

    Use a pitch fork to loosen the soil around the sweet potatoes….start at the edge of the potato bed and move inward to help avoid piercing the potatoes.

    Chelsea it is revelatory to watch you discover each new vegetable of your harvest. I see a glimpse of you as a little girl.
    Fried green tomatoes is a much anticipated meal in the south and I commend it to you and your family.
    I saw this VLOG recently and thought it might be of interest to you and Dan in re your greenhouse repair. ua-cam.com/video/1fw-_yGhJAE/v-deo.html
    Lastly, I was always a strong supporter of manure tea in the spring, summer, fall months. It costs nothing and requires very little to implement a container filled with well rotted manure and water using the runnoff to irrigate the garden, inside and out.
    Thanks for sharing with us so faithfully and I hope your daughter enjoyed watching the woolly bear caterpillar.

    Where did you get the sweet potato slips from? I'm around zone 4 in central Alberta, depending on the winter, but I had lavender over winter, so I think I could try growing this too. Oh please, a wood cook stove video?

      @LittleMountainRanch  3 роки тому +1

      T&T Seeds, but I'm going to start my own this year. I can't wait to share the wood cookstove video.

      I'm in southern Alberta, zone 3B/4A. I have also ordered from T&T but I actually had better results from slips I grew myself from grocery store sweet potatoes. I start them usually in January. This year I transplanted the slips into a planter in the house (with a grow light), then later moved them outside onto the deck where they received lots of direct sunlight & lots of heat. During our really hot weather they needed to be watered twice a day. I often covered them at night to keep them warm. Did not have as good of results as Chelsea. Maybe next year.....😊

    You eat them if you eat them right away they will not taste as good . It takes a while for their sugars to come out. You want to cure them for a few weeks.

  • @cindy-ki8ex
    @cindy-ki8ex 3 роки тому

    You will need to cure the sweet potato's. That gives them time for the sugars to develop.
