    I neglected to mention that, while the elderflowers can be eaten raw, the berries, leaves and stalks are toxic if eaten raw. The cordial I made was cooked.

    I've just grown Amish Paste over in the UK from a small company here that only do heirloom and old variety for all their veg,; they find things that will grow in our low temperature climate. We're very different to you even though we're 56 degrees north, that we have mild winters but also very mild summers. We can't really grow hot loving things outdoors as we don't get consistently above 22 ish degrees (though we had a freak two weeks of 40c that destroyed my garden!). All that to say, the Amish paste produced the biggest tomatoes I've ever grown, not many of them but they're perfectly formed, dense and good for making sauce out of, I'll grow them again!
    Glad to see you got a good harvest of most even though you had such a late frost. The unexpected squash harvest was incredible!

    Hi Chelsea. It seems we northerners spend the majority of our time getting ready for ❄❄ winter. At least we farmers in New Hampshire. Like you, all our seasoned wood is in. The gardens are cleaned up. All that remains is fence mending, repairing barn watering bowls and getting the cattle in the barn before serious snow. Kudos for you and Dan taking your children on a much deserved camping trip. I have to comment that my father-in-law did not or could not take his boys on trips to give them a break. Now they are mostly all work. It takes a lot to get them to take a break and that is unfortunate. I am a hybrid of old NH farming and Martha Stewart :-) My parents, especially mom, made sure we had summer trips to the lake and ocean and such. It made a huge difference! Well done on the 1,000 lbs of potatoes. We buy in ours at 50lbs at a time. The boys eat a lot over the year! ~ Diane

    The happiness that I get from seeing you upload another video cannot be explained!! Especially harvesting videos ❤️ Holy cow!! 1000 pounds!? I'm assuming they cure ok being stored right away from the garden like that, otherwise you wouldn't do it but I've never seen someone do it like that. Probably because most people don't have your amazing root cellar 😂

      We did lay them out for a few hours to dry them off. I haven’t found it to make a huge difference when they are already coming out of dry soil. I worry more about curing if the soil is really wet.

    I planted 4 Huge pots of potatoes and from them all I got 6 potatoes the size of cherry tomatoes. I didn't know to laugh or to cry. Costa del sol Spain.

      That is disappointing. When planting potatoes in pots, be sure to use indeterminate type potatoes to get the most yield.

    I wanted to let you know that baking and pulverized egg shells in the soil you plant your tomatoes will take care of the blossom end rot and it works for several years before you need to add more. I use it religiously because I hate to get that on my tomatoes and I know for a fact it works for me. Since I learned this a few years ago I haven't had to throw away one tomato from blossom end rot

    We grew potatoes in kelp seaweed which washed up on our beach over the winter (in Nova Scotia)

    I wouldn't have thought of using mesh or onion sacks to store potatoes. I've used large brown paper sacks in the past and they worked well as they keep the potatoes in the dark.

    We've had a few really busy days, ending in my making dinner for 12 teenagers doing a project at school.....I don't know how you do that every day...you're amazing! I'm still recovering, lol.

    Looking good. I have been planting amish paste for 3 years now - they do so well. Certainly watering is a problem with blossom end rot, but I save up all my egg shells and put a handful in the hole when I plant as well. I think it made a difference, but some say it makes no difference. Dunno. Enjoy your camping trip!

      I’ve read that it takes years for the calcium in the shells to be able to break down enough to be absorbable, but so many people swear by them that I figure, why not!🤷‍♀️

      @@LittleMountainRanch I have read the same. I figure the same...won't hurt. I put kitchen scraps direct on the garden, sometimes in trench composting, and I have yet to find a shell...could just be it breaks up I don't know. But as you say, why not.

    Have you thought about letting your tomatoes unthaw in a pot then you take them out with some type of strainer spoon that you have. And you put them into your roaster. Now you could also take the tomatoes out that have been thawing and take the peelings but the reason why I'm saying is to let it thaw on a pot instead of running water on it is that that tomato juice that is sawing off the tomatoes and going down on the bottom of that pot. You can use that and season it up or not seasoned it up and just put it in your rice and season the rice. But you can use that juice that is thawing out of those tomatoes. You can can it

    I understand that the stems and leaves of elderberry are toxic. The easiest way to just get berries is to freeze them and the berries just fall the stems.

      No any part of the stem or leaf is toxic. We are elderberry farmers and we have to sign a paper with the health department that no stems or leaves were used in the processing of the juice.

    Elderberry Stalk....raw Elderberries and Seeds are poisenous - process them (boil) for juice, tincture, Jam etc. (strain seeds out - they are always poisenous (cyanide). Blossoms can be consumed raw, but never stems or stalks, not even processed with the berries. Always remove berries from stalks and stems and then sift out seeds.

      Yes, I did know that but forgot to mention it. In every recipe I’ve read it says that boiling elongated issue in the stems too.

    That is an amazing potato haul and the cabbages are beautiful. Everything is so exciting I love the harvest time such a wonderful feeling. I love the new kitchen. I remember parts of it in the start and it has turned out gorgeous love the colors. Have a wonderful rest and fun on the camping trip totally wonderful idea for the kids. hugs and luv

    Great video, thanks. It is interesting to see that the elderberries have flowers AND berries at the same time. I have flowers and later on the berries but then the flowers haven't been there for quite some time. It is super that you explain what the problem is when a vegetable look the way they do.     I had problems with blossom end rot this year for the first time. I amended the soil with bo e meal but I don't think it was the problem because one or 2 in each bed had the problem but that stopped half way thru the season.

    Good afternoon Little Mountain Ranch. Got my taters in the bucket. My favorite method of maintaining a sustainable pantry and stockpiling items long term for the whole family is what I consider to be the most practical, utilizing every type of food storage methods and technology available, both old and new. . Except for the fruits and vegetables that get canned, I keep perishable items like meat, poultry, fish, fruit, vegetables and dairy products in the refrigerator on a short term basis until I'm ready to use them for a big family meal - and for even longer term sustainable storage, a large separate freezer, which can store a half side of beef with plenty of room left over for homemade ice cream etc. . I'm considering upgrading to a walk-in freezer at some point.in the near future, if my plans to open a bed and breakfast come to fruition. Sometimes, however a nice round of cheese can do well for quite awhile on a pantry shelf at room temperature - and doesn't mind even if it has to stand there alone. Store bought canned goods get shelves.in the large pantry closet - several for canned meat like corned beef hash, spam and sandwich spread and another for canned vegetables Bread, rolls, grains, homemade pasta, cereals and the like are stored in special humidity controlled bins I order from Amazon Prime - which usually get delivered to my doorstep about an hour after I order them. . Stuff from the family garden and orchard, like onions, bell peppers, tomatoes, cauliflower, cucumber, pumpkins, carrots, corn celery,, potatoes and yams, cherries, blueberries and strawberries get canned in Mason Jars and stored in the cool, root cellar of this wonderful rambling former farmhouse (circa 1867) I share with my extended blended family and several rambunctious dogs raised on table scraps from the some of the finest food from a plethora of sources both commercial and home based. . There's even a special separate "summer kitchen" which I converted to store butter and ice cream churns, pots, pans, utensils, extra storage containers, foil, bags, cutlery, and other meal related accoutrement. Out back in the woods, just beyond the big pile of wood I maintain all year, (for use in an antique woodstove I keep on hand, in case the power goes out) there's even an old rusting vintage still where my great grandfather made some of the finest corn whiskey for miles. Next to it is the rusting hulk of the Ford Model A he used to transport that powerful hootch by the light of the moon on soft summer nights to his eager customers in a tri-county area. Further into this verdant forest of mostly sycamore, oak, pine and scrub, runs a cool stream into which I occasionally cast a rod or net to catch some Brook Trout, Bluntnose Shiners, or whatever takes the bait (just earthworms for the most part). And yes, hunting season means wild turkey, deer, and even an occasional wild boar. Next week, I'm planning on filing for a permit to 3-D print a smokehouse in order to be able to create gourmet artisan handcrafted, beef, bacon, turkey, and beef stick jerky, which interested local merchants can private label for other people to share with their families and their family dogs. Unfortunately, I had to break the bad news to my free range hens today that due to expected egg shortages regretfully numbered are their days of laying a couple of eggs and then basically taking the rest of the day off with ranging privileges' within the parameters of a few very nice rural acres - parts of which are rich with fat grubworms. There's even a short dirt road between the main barn and the farmhouse which they're free to cross to get to the other side as often as they'd like. My rooster Ben overheard me and he ain't too happy either, knowing full well that due to oncoming egg shortages, he'll be "workin' overtime to make sure there's plenty of eggs for the family and I.

    We love Amish paste too. But this year we had really bad splitting on the top near the stems. Most splits started while they were still green. You know what causes that? We didn’t have blossom end rot issues.

      @@LittleMountainRanch I try to eat better , no GMO corn syrup / soy oil . I make my own catsup = tomato , onion , small bit of garlic , salt & sugar , vinegar . Tast just like Hines 57 .

    Creosote is overrated. It takes 20 minutes to clean, and you have to clean at least once a year no matter what. If I burn green wood, I need to spend extra 20 minutes a YEAR for cleaning a second time. Whooptiedoo

      I appreciate your thoughts, but with the kind of indoor wood furnace we have it is a serious pain. I need to clean the chimney every 6-8 weeks if we burn green wood. I do miss our old blaze king, with that it wasn’t such an issue.
