The songwriter for this, Jimmy Webb, was still in high school when he sold songs to Sinatra. This song is a masterpiece, about a man who is stood up at his planned wedding in the park and how he will never ever get over it or the woman who left him there alone. It's heartbreaking, but so creative and imaginative and beautiful to listen to and Sarah's reaction matches all of that. Thank you for honoring my request, Frau Denglar! 💝
Fifty-six years after it was released it isn't any less remarkable that this song was written, orchestrated and produced by someone who was still only twenty-one at the time, namely Jimmy Webb. His other great songs include Wichita Lineman, Up Up And Away and By The Time I Get To Phoenix.
B aby I am amazed at the way you are amazed at this song! 😂❤🎉 It is so contra-- puntal, and incongruent, that is what i am so stoked about it! RICHARD harris was an actor at the time. I WAS SHOCKED he got awards for his singing......more power to him! 😂😊😊
Richard Harris was actually an actor. If you want to see him as an actor find a movie called "A Man Called Horse". It was a fantastic movie and Richard Harris was phenomenal.
@@MtM2253 Mutiny On The Bounty,The Molly Maguires,Cromwell.....I'm so glad a few other people here remember him from more than Harry Potter.Never saw Harry Potter by the way.
When it came out, the quirkiness intrigued me, and I grew to love it. Richard Harris is an actor, and this song seems like a difficult one to master. BTW, great reaction!
Richard Harris was an Irish actor but with some singing experience. He was the star of Camelot, the Musical and sang that on stage and on film in that. This is the original hit that came out around May/June 1968 and was actually longer than the Beatles Hey Jude by about 19 seconds. Hey Jude came out in Fall 1968. This wa show the song was intended to be, and I hated Donna Summers' disco version. This was much more majestic and magnificent. A masterpiece that was one of 2-3 anthems for the summer of 1968. Jimmy Webb was and is a genius songwriter, he wrote out the entire arrangement himself. He was a trained pianist and organist who wanted to write songs. they include By the Time I Get to Phoenix, Up Up and Away [Grammy winner], Wichita Lineman, Galveston, Are You Still Within the Sound of My Voice, and many many more.
This was written in 1967 by the great Jimmy Webb when he was a young man of 21. The music is genius, and the lyrics are mature way beyond his years. I discovered this song when I was in high school, and 50+ years later, it remains my favorite song. This recording was the first release, and it is still the definitive performance of it.
Your reaction was amazing!!! I felt the chills along with you that I have felt every time I hear it. Love is like a cake and grab it and hold it before it melts.
This song was written by the great Jimmy Webb. Covered hundreds of times since Harris had the hit with it. Even showed up on The Simpsons and several other TV shows.
Of course this was recorded long before he played Professor Dumbledore in the first two Harry Potter movies. There is a video on UA-cam showing him performing this with an orchestra, trust an actor to move great on stage while performing such a momentous song.
The composer of the song, Jimmy Webb, played the harpsichord part on this. Tis is what happens when REAL human beings make music together. This is really a mini symphony.
Beautiful, is'nt it ❤ I really love Donna Summer's version, but this one is the best, to me anyway. Huge hit in the Netherlands. A pretty roughe guy ,singing this beautiful song. Awesom. Thanks sweet Sarah, loved this one. 😁👍❤️
What blows me away Sarah is that you would even consider listening to music from 60 or so years ago. What inspired this? Great music comes from all eras and this song was among the best of its time. It's obvious you love good music. Why not listen to ragtime or tinpan alley songs from early 20th century Americana? Who knows? You might find that fun as well. All the best.
Richard Harris' version of "MacArthur Park" is the one I remember hearing first in 1968 before Donna Summer covered it as a disco version in 1978. This song was recorded a year after Richard Harris played in the classic movie "Camelot" (1967). He performed several musical numbers in it.
Moin, Richard Harris was one of the best actors and singers. But please try also the German version by Danish singer Gitte Hænning. She can sing all from Jazz to Folk ... and is a actress too. Regards from SH in Germany! Jörg
Sarah, this is the original (1967), and it is incredible. But I think you would also enjoy the late ‘70s/early ‘80s cover by the Queen of Disco, Donna Summer. It really shows off her incredible voice. Period definitely worth a listen or even a reaction.
Sir Richard Harris is one of the finest actors the UK has ever seen. If you want to know Sir Richard Harris better, watch the movie "A Lion in Winter" with Kate Hepburn.
MacArthur Park is an actual park located in downtown Los Angeles. Donna Summer took her cover of "MacArthur Park" to number one in the US charts in 1978. Richard Harris played Albus Dumbledore in the first two Harry Potter films, as well as English Bob in Clint Eastwood's 1992 Western classic, Unforgiven.
Requiem is also written by Jimmy Webb and performed by Richard Harris and just as "big" and striking. Harris had a particularly dramatic singing style, possibly from his work in the theater. It's perfect for certain Webb songs, just as Glen Campbell was perfect for others.
Richard Harris is also remembered as a great actor . Appeared in Harry Potter films and many others. He also enjoyed a good drinking session with other wild actors, especially Peter O’Toole. Harris was known to on chat shows and be so drunk he couldn’t speak properly. You can’t reconcile the two after listening to this
Thank you. A love lost …..Gone but never forgotten. Never have that recipe again. Someone else will have her, but never me again. After all the loves of my life, still thinking of you, I wonder WHY. Yes, very sad my dear. Love your ceiling lights.
If it wasn't asked for by Richard Harris.... what's that song down there... and Jimmy said well those I just keep around because they don't fit anywhere.. and Richard said... let me here them.. and a few minutes later.. is where Richard said ... that is a hit you have there... Jimmy Webb.... I was a richard harris devotee... and I got the lyrics first time.. I have both abums.... A Tramp Shining.... and The Yard Went On Forever. ..... Jimmy is simply a genius.....
And know that "The Wrecking Crew" played the music. They were the most prolific and unknown musicians in the industry in the 60 and 70's. Hal Blaine was the drummer. GOOGLE his accomplishments.
@@thomasjacques5286 thanks for pointing out that the WC was a major part of this and Hal with his 35,000 recordings, 7 record of the year Grammys and 100 top ten records, not to mention the hundreds of others that hit the top 100 on Billboard.
I always loved Richard Harris as an actor. Although the movie “Orca” was (arguably) terrible, I loved his performance. And he really stole the show in “Unforgiven”.
I am a new fan. I love the genuine reactions you show. Try "One Tin Soldier" by Coven from the movie Billy Jack. You would like it. It tells a sad story.😊
Jimmy Webb, the writer of the song, was on The David Letterman Show about ten years ago and did a great version of the song. ua-cam.com/video/RUPSilcJFrQ/v-deo.html
Donna Summer knocked this song out of the park. Richard Harris was a great actor. Not really a recording artist. He did recognize this songs potential though.
I love this. But this is Donna Summer's song. You should check it out. In fact you should listen to everything Donna Summer did. She was amazing. Also, you should check out Eva Cassidy singing Nightbird and Sara Bareilles - She Used To Be Mine. You are still my favourite reactor.🙂

He's basically singing about what he feels and sees. A beautiful song about being stood up!
Harris known better for his acting rather than musical skills but this song is a classic.

🎼Justin Hayward does this song also. But in all my honesty…Richard Harris wears the “best of all” badge on this Jimmy Webb composition.☮️😊😊

Donna Summer sang the heck out of this song. But this is the best, classic version for sure. 🙂
Richard Harris does a song that gives me goosebumps when he recorded it, and when Elvis covered it. It's called "My Boy".
