"A Whiter Shade of Pale" has sold in excess of 10,000,000 copies which is a remarkable feat, especially for a song released as a single. Only about 40 songs in history have ever achieved this great feat. In 2004 the song also made it onto the top 60 of Rolling Stone’s notable ranking of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. In 1998, it was inducted into the highly-distinguished Grammy Hall of Fame. And in 1977 the Brit Awards gave it the distinction of being The Best British Pop Single 1952-1977, an accolade it shared with “Bohemian Rhapsody” (1975) by Queen. Also in 2018 the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame changed its criteria, allowing singles to be inducted into the institution as opposed to only musicians themselves. And “A Whiter Shade of Pale” was amongst the first songs to be enshrined therein. The success of this song has led to “a whiter shade of pale” being adopted as a common phrase in the English lexicon.
I love watching young people's reactions to the misic of my youth. There were so many great musicians and singers back then. I feel so grateful to have lived in that era and had my musical taste formed then.

Young people nowadays often say they love oldies. I am 29, my favorite band is The Beatles.
I had the distinct honor and privilege to accompany Procol Herum in 1997 at Star Light Theater and 2004 and 2006 at the Lyric Opera House as the Concert Pianist for the K.C. Philharmonic Orchestra. The band was a phenomenon. Gary Brooker's voice was spell binding. His Passing in Feb was a tragedy to the music world and I lost a great friend. Astonishingly enough his voice never failed him.
This song is the soundtrack to my Baby Boom Gen. Saw them 4 times, '70, '71, '72 and '74 with 3 different axemen (Dave Ball twice). Amazing live show, leaving one drained, physically and emotionally. It's hard for me to listen to this song without weeping by the end. Thank u, Garry Brooker and Keith Reid. RIP lads.
This song was the backtrack to the 'Summer of Love' 1967. Everywhere you went, you could hear this blasting out of radios. Gary died from cancer at 76 years old. He will be sadly missed.

Thanks so much for listening and reviewing Procol Harum Schell. Water shade of pale is one of the most perfect songs that's ever been written and sang. It's timeless and always will be. RIP Gary... You are missed
I was sixteen when this song came out in 1967. The band's debut single hit # 1 in the UK and stayed there for SIX weeks! It sold over ten million copies and was played throughout the Summer of Love. Both John Lennon and Paul McCartney were enthralled by the Chaucerian wordplay and heavenly Baroque accompaniment.
Schnell, I couldn't agree with you more on this video and performance by Gary Brooker and Procol Harum! This performance always captivates me when I watch it and thanks for the post!👍
So glad you enjoyed Procol Harum so much. As a singer, I'm sure you'll appreciate that the late and amazing Gary Brooker sounded exactly like that when the song was released in 1967 when he was about 21. GAWD! WHAT a voice. I was 15 when the song was new. I am now an old man who recently retired from a lifetime of playing music for a living. I was gifted with a 3 1/2 octave range (But probably down to three now that I no longer sing regularly). I would cheerfully have murdered my entire circle of friends (Kidding.?). if I could only have sung like Mr. Brooker. Some singers get power. Some get range. Some get tone. Gary Brooker had everything any singer would ever need and more. Thank you for featuring Procol Harum and for listening with "open ears". It'll be a long time before another Brooker comes along. Kindest regards.
Full orchestra, full choir, full rock band, organ, piano and magic. Even the tent and setting were magical, like something out of renaissance faire. 🥰 Love you Schnell!
I’m 53 years old and this song came out when my mom was five months pregnant with me in 1967. I grew up to this amazing song and it’s been on every playlist I’ve ever made throughout my life. So sad that the singer died a few months ago. So many of the great musicians of our time passing away lately. Thank you for keeping the music alive.
This entire concert is available on DVD and it is a wonderous performance. The world is a lesser place now that Gary Brooker just passed away. But he won't be forgotten!
I love to see someone that is hearing the great Gary Brooker for the first time. Gary was a good singer when this song came out. I often tell people that Gary is like fine wine. As he aged, he got better and better. The Danish National Symphony Orchestra that accompanied Gary, is on of the finest orchestra's in the world, and helped make this great song even better. Great reaction.
It has been 11 months or so since you did this reaction. You were so impressed by Gary Brooker's amazing talent. Don't you think it's time to honor his recent passing by doing another performance by this amazing artist. I might even recommend "Conquistador" from this same concert.
If there was ever a contest of which video on you tube is the best of all time, this video would get lots of votes for sure. Gary's voice, two genre's meeting up at a castle in Denmark, and a song regarded as perhaps the vest R&B song ever recorded qualifies this as an all time great performance.
I wouldn't classify Whiter Shade of Pale as anything close to R&B. I would however say that he sang one of the greatest baroque pop songs of all time with an R&B voice, giving it an extra layer of gravitas.
I was due to see them in London, in February, and was so looking forward to it. Then Gary passed away and the dream was over. There will always be this spine-tingling video to watch, however.
Just when this came out, I was into prog-rock. They gave it that beautiful twist with Bach included and the magical singing. Here i like his voice even more… ❤️

Gary Brooker - great singer, great artist. RIP. This is one of those songs that really does take you back in time. You can almost 'smell' the time or era. And, musically that was a great time to be alive.
A magnificent performance from Gary Brooker & the Danish National Orchestra & Choir. The original is just as full & classically beautiful. Thanks for your reaction.

Notice how Gary Brooker is one of the few lead vocalists who holds a note on a word like "was." Usually, a singer wants to hold notes on vowels. Not Gary. But he just knows how to manipulate the word to work musically. A masterful singer who has been doing this since 1965. Procol Harum is a legendary band -- was the first to perform live with a full orchestra -- the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra in Canada ("Conquistador" the opening song was stunning). An incredible night of rock music married perfectly to concert musicians. Great assessment Schnell.
i love this song when i first heard it in 1967. i was 13 then and in Grade 7. after 39 years, Gary (rest in peace) did iit again. OH WOW goosebumps and tears as i reminisce my younger years.
Schnell, since you loved this one so much you should check out A Salty Dog from the same concert. Gary Brooker's (R.I.P.) vocals are phenomenal on it. Whiter Shade of Pale was their biggest hit but A Salty Dog is my favorite. Conquistador was also another hit that they performed at this concert.
The song was written and first performed in 1967 - full version with all FOUR verses was available on FM rock stations in the late 60s and early 70s. There are a few clips of versions with all 4 verses - and the Lyrica rea amazing. Great reaction by you young lady!
I've watched and loved this video many times. I'm always struck by the production of it. To assemble the orchestra and choir that fits his band and song so well and all live!
I first heard this in 1967 and loved it (as did many more) but it is absolutely true that by the time of this performance his voice had more depth and timbre; which is not always the case.
This was number one in the UK charts the day I was born. Such a privilege to have been a summer of love, child. I actually cried when Gary passed away, it was like losing a friend. R.I.P Gary. Your legend will forever live on, until it is my turn to leave this world.
This was the #1 smash song of 1967 - a global hit. And 55 years later it is apparently the most requested and played song ever. It was a co-write by singer Gary Brooker and band lyricist Keith Reid, who wrote very peculiar lyrics. The band name was that of Brooker's cat. Yes, Brooker was a great singer with a very distinctive voice. He was a real rock 'n' roller and r 'n' b musician, but with Procol Harum he took a more classical turn, though the riffing rock element was always there as you can hear in the tune I link below, 'Simple Sister'. Thought Procol's drummer BJ Wilson and guitarist Robin Trower joined the band after 'A Whiter Shade of Pale' became a hit, they too were integral to the success of the band. If you know Joe Cocker's 'A Little Help From My Friends', that is Wilson on drums with Jimmy Page on guitar. After that session Page asked the drummer to join what became Led Zeppelin. Fortunately he declined. He was also on the 'Rocky Horror Show' soundtrack and later with Cocker. Guitarist Trower went on to his own successful career. Listen to 'Bridge of Sighs', with bassist James Dewar on vocals. Another fine though relatively unknown singer with a personality-filled voice. In addition to his solo career Brooker was also part of Eric Clapton's band and recorded with Kate Bush. ua-cam.com/video/xqA_aAMZ_3I/v-deo.html
I love your reaction. Procol Harum is my favorite band from the 60s. I had the privilege to see them in person 6 times. My favorite album was Grand Hotel. It captured this feel throughout the album. Such great memories.
It amazes me how many people say they're unaware of certain artists because they weren't born when they were going. When I was a young Beatles fan in the 60s, I knew about many artists who were popular before I was born. I always heard people talking about them or I read about them in magazines or saw them on TV shows or movies; there was no way I could avoid being exposed to them. For some strange reason that doesn't seem to happen with current generations. They seem unaware of anything that happened before yesterday.
When we had school dances this was usually the last dance song. I've loved it since it came out.I love Gary Brooker, what a voice, which is sadly gone now. RIP GARY BROOKER, who died in February from cancer.
This is awesome live in 2006 you'll be surprised how close it comes to the original release except for the orchestra you have to check it out that will blow your mind how good he did it back when he was a young man
I was lucky to have older sisters who listened to this epic song. It brought back memories from days long gone. Thks for bring it back to life. You gave an excellent reaction. Now it's time to go find more.
brought a tear to my eye. We played this at my cousin's going away party 54 years ago when he was being deployed to Vietnam as part of an Air Cav unit.
I heard this song when it first came out and was floored by the delivery, but I think this performance is as good as the original. His voice held up well through the years. Good reaction, thank you.

Best performance of this song that everyone knew when we were kids, that I've ever heard. Most people loved this song. It was a huge hit.
RIP Gary Brooker. This is the best version of this timeless classic. Nice reaction too.
Thanks Schnell, I enjoyed your reaction to this song so much the first time I saw it, I had to simply come back and see it again.
How many 61 year olds sound that great ! Gary Brooker was one of the best !
i love this song when i first heard it in 1967. i was 13 then and in Grade 7. after 39 years, Gary (rest in peace) did iit again. OH WOW goosebumps and tears as i reminisce my younger years.
this was sooooo important to him. So many layers. you will appreciate even more when you work out why he is so emotional at this performance
Great version. Age didn't ruin Gary's voice it enhanced it
true!!
Ditto on Salty Dog!!!
Even the organist was standing at the climax of the song as Gary reached his last crescendo......kudos, thanks for the music and RIP, Gary Brooker.
I was a Junior in HS in 1967 when this song came out. Great song, Great group and a Great year for music

As soon as that voice kicks in, you know hat here is something very, very special,
When we had school dances this was usually the last dance song. I've loved it since it came out.I love Gary Brooker, what a voice, which is sadly gone now. RIP GARY BROOKER, who died in February from cancer.
This is awesome live in 2006 you'll be surprised how close it comes to the original release except for the orchestra you have to check it out that will blow your mind how good he did it back when he was a young man
He is as good then as he was in the 60s
Nice job, SJ. RIP to the late great Gary Brooker, a guy who kept that angelic voice all the way to the very end, a rare thing for sure.
