Since many seem to be confused, I will just put a little note here that this video is NOT a hiking or camping trip of any kind, I would never haul this much gear on a real trip, I am but a few feet from my truck and the purpose of this video was only to answer allllll the question I get all the time about these particular 10 items I use often in my videos. Cheers!
This crossed my mind lol
Thanks for clarifying that. I was wondering where your pack animal was!
@@bkl8804 to shill who exactly? Good one
@@careenaalexis No sponsors yet? Whoops. Just wait.
@@bkl8804 You can only shill the shilling. I'm sorry your lame
Love your attitude toward your equipment. Dad taught me 40 years ago that buying quality is a bit more expensive, but just like you said, you will have it a life time and probbly hand it down to the next generation of camper.👍🏻👍🏻😎😎😎
Exactly!
I understand what your dad meant. I did the math on my gear and came to the conclusion that buying quality is cheaper. A friend of mine used to buy cheap backpacks. In less than 3 years she spent more money on replacements than the initial cost of mine was. Mine is still in good condition after 15 years.
Quality gear is expensive. Cheap-o gear is really expensive!
@@racebiketuner You understand.
A woman talking about axes and sharp objects is sexy.
Thank you Alexis for all the great information on your outdoor gear, to enjoy weekends out in the great outdoor’s! Be safe, stay healthy, & God Bless everyone!
When you started pushing around your food with a stick I was sold. So many channels just talk about gear but you get the idea that the people never actually use it or have any experience in the situations they are talking about and they're more in it for the idea than practise (which is fine, just not my cup of tea). Thanks for a really cool video. Subbed.
Not sure which is the more beautiful piece of work, the knife with that amazing handle or the sheath. Definitely a dedicated craftsman.
I agree, I want one...
That bag is beautiful! Cast iron is our favorite as well. We use it at home all the time. Great video. See you next week!
Ya’ll keep up the great work, the adventures and most importantly, educating by showing! We all appreciate the hard work and effort that goes in to it! I know because while I do the same, the effort into video, editing ,content creation it is time consuming and well harder than doing what we do!
How did I only just this week find your channel!!! Now I have to binge watch the last 4 years 🙂 So happy I found you. Your channel is beyond amazing!!!!
Great equipment and review! If you turn your cast iron pan upside down you can bake corn cakes or pancakes on the bottom of it and they will have the design embedded in them. Pour your mix slowly so it doesn’t run off 🤙🏽
Simple, straight to the point, and enjoyable. Subscribed! Looking forward to more of your content. And you're right, the Husqvarna axes are great! I've used one for years clearing on our property (20 acre homestead) and it's been phenomenal. I need to rehang it now, but it's been used and abused. Keep up the great work!
Im very impressed with your channel. Great content. Im in the middle of making me a custom survival neck knife and you have great product review. Awesome perspective of how you roll with your gear. Seen alot of different stuff i havent seen. Pretty cool!
I like these types of video's. I mainly watch camping, bushcraft video's where the creator talks and tells you what they are doing and why they do it. I particularly enjoy survival type scenario's, and equipment put into real life use.
What a great presentation Alex. Nice job keep up the good work!
Hey Alexis I've had really good results with becell margarine.I often think when they say season the pan means. Grinding Pink Hymilyan Rock Salt in top of melted Marg. Kind of acts like a non-slip surface. Great choices in gear. The Scandinavian stuff works and is a best value. I just love my Silva compass/fire starter. Anyways have fun out there.
Awesome video! Love cooking with cast iron at home and while camping too. I'm still in the learning process of keeping it seasoned properly, and I'm thinking it's almost there.
The secret is to use it often. Just make sure to warm it up nicely before cooking. Food going in cold or without any oil is what makes it stick. The prewarming helps season it every use with any miniscule remainder of the last oiling.
I've got the same cast iron as that one, from the same place as well. I love it. Reminds me of my times as a kid when we'd be camping as a family. Though, I commend you for hauling that thing around ,if it is any amount of distance, by foot!
Love the pants....now to go looking!
Really enjoyed the video, thanks. You can spend years trying multiple products until you determine what works for you. It's helpful to have someone who actually uses an item and recommends it.
Awesome, I’m saving this video so I can come back to it when needed. Thank you for sharing with Us! 😁❤
Hey sweet girl!! Hope y’all are doing well and enjoying the holidays ❤ I’ll have to catch up on your vids and see how Grizz is doing. I hope he’s recovered well and loving life. You guys are awesome!! 🥰
I really enjoyed this video, Careena. Your taste, your appreciation for a particular aesthetic is so similar to my own. Awesome gear and great explanations for each item. Lovely work in every way. You're incredible. Take care, my friend.
Thanks so much Joel!! Hope you are well!!
Glad to see you've taken to cast iron! Cast iron is the best for bushcraft cooking or canoeing if properly seasoned - too heavy for backpacking of course. Cleaning, even if you accidentally get food baked to the surface is loosened easily by simmering it half full of water for 5 minutes. I put it away with a light coating of oil and it's good to go.You can find them at flea markets fairly inexpensively but I always make sure to get a North American (or better yet Canadian made) brand: Findlay, GSW or similar as the iron is better quality. My Findlay No 9 is probably 40 years old. It will never wear out. Good video, thanks
When I got a new Lodge pan first thing I did was take my grinder with an 80 grit flap disk to it to smooth it out a bit before I seasoned it for the first time. The vintage cast iron which is often very pricey also tends to have a smoother finish than the Lodge (thought Lodge is still excellent for the price) edit: That is an absolutely beautiful saw. I carry a folding Sven saw in my kit an I'll probably stick with it but it warms my heart to see a new production classic wood bucksaw.
Great tip!
Season the pan in an oven with some avocado oil after you smooth it with the grinder.
Just bought a bunch of Lodge gear not long ago. Thanks for the tips!
@@toddgarrison6154 Lodge sells a seasoning oil in a spray-on can but canola oil works too. If you choose to polish it with a grinder (or hand sand it) wash with hot soapy water after to remove the grinding dust and then immediately season in the oven. If you search for "Cowboy Kent cast iron" here on youtube he has an excellent video on seasoning and care for cast iron.
@@Leightr Yep. You beat me to the recommendation for Kent’s seasoning instructions. Mine is still slick as a baby’s bottom. Also his instructions on how to clean after each use. I bought one of his wooden tools off the website. Works great.
My Con& Pros response to your video
1:30 ....Canvas Bags are wonderful , but...mine always gets a little mold build up from moisture over a 5 day - 2 week hike..I like the Maxpedition brand (pricey but) for its tough durable materials.
2:17 ... Cast Iron pans are awesome...I agree, but they are heavy and hard to maintain on long Canoe trips and hikes .
A Stainless steel pan is lighter, but the clean up takes some work
Never will use a Tin/ Aluminum pan ever on the trips, despite that they are super light.
Haven't tried the Titanium pans, but alot of my Bushcraft friends say, they are ruined from the Hot spots that they produce on open fire.
4:32 ... Excellent choice with the axes/hatchet/felling axes.
It would be good , if you put a guard on the neck (example : hockey tape with leather)
5:46 ... Again, never cared for the titanium..I am a traditionist with my Stainless steel pot/ cup 48oz/6cups ...the bigger the better and the bonus, (9:25) is that it sleeves over my 1.2 liter stainless steel Klean Kanteen water single walled bottle ($35 cad 9 yrs ago).
I use to give a hoot, about the lid fitting properly, but I've always used a piece of hvy duty tin foil...does the exact same job..
6:40 ... Beautiful Leather , bead work !! It would be great if you made the flap on the spice kit longer, to fold over completely...but you can always attach a flap to it.
I love your spice kit...and want one.
7:30 ... Very nice small knife. My wife love the Eldris Mora Neck Knife and always uses it for her wild herb hikes.
8:53 ... Those are nice work Bison gloves...the grommet is a beautiful touch, for belt hanging...
9:53 .. sweet BUCK SAW...love it
10:43... I like the Marks Work Wearhouse thick Construction canvas pants, with lots of pocket options. On Sale for $90cad, the HELLY HANSEN WORKWEAR Men's Chelsea Evolution BRZ Construction 4-Way Stretch Work Pants. I have used these brands for decades, now.
Saku Honkilahti has in my opinion the most appealing lines of all custom puukko designs in Finland. I almost purchased one from him years back but he was suffering from tennis elbow at the time and had to rest for a long time.
Agree completely. The proportions just look perfect.
Awesome Gear! Just in time for holiday shopping! Thanks! 👍😃
Your channel is amazing, please don't ever leave UA-cam!❤️
Fun stuff, I love my cast iron, my stuff is over a hundred years old...
I just love the fact that my great grandparents and my grandparents cooked on them, I get teared up, just thinking about the meals they shared with their friends and family.
All the laughter of the kids sitting in the Cabin around the wood cook stove, if these pans could talk..
I love you organize your wood in different sizes. I do that too!
I bought a Husqvarna hatchet from a farming supplies website for £19 a few years ago. Ridiculously cheap considering the quality of the steel. Once I started using it I ordered another one as a back up as I realised I'd never find such a great bargain again! I sanded the handle, gave it a coat of boiled linseed oil, and fitted a leather overstrike guard. Been in constant use ever since.
Love your stove. It reminds me of the Yukon stoves we had in Alaska when I was stationed at Ft. Wainright (Fairbanks), AK. I'm in SW Texas now, but I would still love to have an old Yukon stove just because. Would have been handy during Snowmageddon. Lodge cast iron is good. My mother was an old country girl so cast iron was central to the cookware. Good (not necessarily flashy) gear always is a solid investment. Thanks for showing your gear.
Cool!! I love my Husqvarna axe! Good information, Thank You for sharing! I never used soap in my iron ware, it takes the seasoning out.
I actually love that groudn sheet!!
I love puukko knives. They are beautiful in their simplicity.
Thanks so much! Gear to love is hard to find. It is always through trials and error. I have quite a collection ha ha. Love your video thanks for sharing.
Nice work Dove. My Boys were trained to stay silent in the bush. Mud pack and berries.
Cast iron is all we've ever used and never have problems with sticking food.
The trick we use is to filter bacon grease real well with two small fine steel food strainers and store in the fridge. After each pan use lightly clean with light soap and warm water ( recommended by Woods ).
Let pan dry well then with a blue shop towel ( blue shop towel won't leave all them fiber's behind ) apply a small amount of bacon grease inside and out with finger tips then spread with twice folded shop towel all over pan/pot's inside and out and you can use the shop towel over and over many times.
Don't worry light bacon grease won't start fire on outside of pans. It keeps everything from sticking and rusting, my pans are several years old and look brand new and exactly like the one she's holding. %100 of the time the water just beads off the cast iron.😁
I'd say that depends where you live. In Florida, you're not seasoning your cast iron for storage with bacon grease. It absolutely will go rancid unless you're using it almost every day. Good ol' lard down here.
Never used soap myself.
Nice video! Interesting to see someone commenting on pots with proper lids😊. I have a Toaks ti pot, about 1L, has a great diameter to depth ratio for melting snow/boiling water but you would need a 2K weight to keep the lid on. One of those situations where you really have to wonder if the people proposing to market this ever tried to use the manufactured product. Frustrating as hell so it sits unused. It’s the little things that matter! So please carry on 😁
A great list of awesome gear! Thanks, Alexis.
Love what you do, keep living the good life! 🙂
Lodge products are AWESOME!
Hey thanks for the shout out! Also I dig the titanium pot. I grabbed one from a company on Amazon and low and behold the lid fit! Oh…. And dang I love that saw 😮
Uh oh…. You have spam bots 😆
Two videos in a row with cooking!! Love it
Great stuff, also I never thought about preparing broccoli like that but I did last night and the results were fantastic.
I will definitely be purchasing some of the gear you suggested today! Thanks for sharing your preferences with us.
Happy to help!!
You've got some of the coolest shit, I like the rustic old school style. Thanks for sharing!
Pro tip build your fire with the largest logs and build until the kindling is on top. This technique was developed by the Swedish and makes your fires last 10x longer using less wood
Thanks! Happy Holidays to you and yours!
Thanks for this most informative video! I will definitely be looking into the reefknot rucksack,my rucksack has seen better days,I'm also going to order the KIHD titanium pot looks like a top quality pot! Happy trails and stay safe! By the way, just curious how Grizz is doing hope he is doing well!
I am VERY jealous of that knife. Great video! Thanks for sharing
Thanks for the suggestion on the titanium pot. It’s actually my first titanium pot and it appears I got it right on the first go, based on your video. It got here super fast, and functions as advertised. Looking forward to a spring canoe trip and put it through its paces.
So glad to hear it!! You will not be disappointed! :)
Great info. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and experience. I find your assessments valuable.
Thank you as always Wendy!
Love all your gears!
Thirty seconds in, I already learned something. Take my upvote.
I remember you saying the industry is extremely saturated, true, though, the only camping content I like is Your Channel and Joe Robinet👌 and that’s all I need, grass is always greener on the other side, keep your head up, keep marching on, CHEERS
Me too!
Hi Alexis, I’ve enjoyed watching your bushcraft skills, techniques, a lot of energy to make you VLOGS makes the quality ever so present, writing from Santa Fe, NM
Thank you so much!
@@careenaalexis ♥️
Fantastic quality stuff. Really love it. Thanks
Thanks. You hit on the items I had questions about. Great mind reading.
8:40 -> Compared to what I buy blade-wise they don't cost that much 😂😁
Good vid. Good selection of gear.
I've wondered about your gloves and hatchet for a while now so glad to see you explain your gear and what you like about everything. I could smell that sausage and broccolini from here, bet it was tasty!
Truth, I want the gloves and knife...
Awesome gear, thanks for sharing
🔥💯Thank you. More products reviews. We love this content on what we should buy. Keep the videos coming. 💯🔥🙏🙌👍😍
Greetings from Kansas. I just discovered your UA-cam videos and they are great! You are one tough lady and I say that with the utmost respect. I’ll be watching more.
Awesome gear! Thanks for sharing!
You have such cool stuff and I like the fact you don't mind carrying heavier items like cast iron or a larger axe . 😇😇😇
Great Video! Thanks for making it and thank you for YOU!
Great channel! I don’t ever comment but now I want to just drive out somewhere and camp out for a night. I have always been a outdoor junky and just haven’t been doing it lately
Very enjoyable. Thanks for sharing
You have the best taste is gear. Thanks for the cool show.
Thomas
Wooohooo for some Canadian made products as well! We're not always as fortunate to have as many options, so any shares on some other that could use the visibility is always appreciated.
Thanks , nice videos, very enjoyable, great gear .
You have such cool gear!! Thank you for sharing or I’d never know about any of this!
Thanks for watching!
Love my Bear Essentials saw. He is a great guy too.
Always cook w cast iron, last forever, lodge is quality! Have a nice stir fry from them...
Great products video Alexis . its hard to find good outdoors stuff.😃👍
Thank you. I really love your channel and the calm and informative videos. How often does the backpack need to be rewaxed and what kind of wax should I use?
That was excellent and super fun, thanks.
nice selection of hiking essentials
Great video Careena
Love to see what gear you have on. Whoa whoa whoa
great pants. ive been considering buying some of those for years. kinda waiting to wear out some others i have. ive got too many pants! i make full tang knives too. i dont do hollow grinding either. but yea most of what ive made have been bigger hunting knives. ive made some small ones but i want to focus more on smaller packable and light weight knives next. i like making the sheathes too. great stuff ya got there alexis!
Excellent, keep up the good work
Thanks for the gear breakdown video. Very informative. Question I have is what was the tarp you used. Looks sturdy and we’ll made.
can't beat a good old buck saw i think they sound nicer when you cut , other sound so tinny , good video Alexis
Thank you, great video!
You're doing a good job. Great vid!
Enjoyed the video. Feel free to do a video on the "learning curve" associated with your cast iron pan. I'm still learning......
You are 1 in a million for sure! Stay strong!
awesome tool set up that tarp you use to display your gear deserves mention 🌲
Bushcraft spin oilskin and wool ground cloth, I've mentioned it in many past videos, it's a FANTASTIC piece of kit! Thanks for watching!
Very informative.I've got a hand made knife by some guy in the kirkland Lake area who is somewhat famous. Have never used it. Prefer a smaller knife as does Careena
I have a small cast pan (which you can see in my videos) which has never seen soap in over 20 years. Works beautifully 😍
Excellent vid. Thank you
A lot of good information and products thank you.
that jacket ready to light up in first couple of mins
Love your videos x
Alexis , lots of great stuff ,, stay safe my friend , see you on the next one
Thanks, you too!
Great items thank you
Nice reviews Lexi!
I am from Sweden myself, I see much of your gear comes from the North, and I too think the quality is great. It's been some time since I was out, but hope to get out again soon :D Thank you for the video, have a great time. :D
I am fairly certain Wetterlings (est. 1880) used to make the Husqvarna axe heads, for Husqvarna, but no longer do. I think now they are made by Hults Bruk (est. 1697) for Husqvarna .. Yes all three are Swedish companies... Hultafors is also a Hults Bruk company.. if I remember correctly..
Yep, that sounds right to me as well. I have a hultafors splitting axe
