- Discipline, one of the hallmarks of a Marine, is a trait instilled early and often in training, and the recruits of Hotel Company, 2nd Recruit Training Battalion, learned it comes in many forms March 5, 2014, on Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, S.C. Along with training in close-order drill, which instills discipline by teaching instant, willing obedience to orders, minor disciplinary infractions are corrected with incentive training. Hotel Company is scheduled to graduate May 9, 2014.

I understand that Marines can only get smoked for 5 minutes at a stretch. Army Infantry OSUT was a bit different. We got smoked for HOURS at a stretch.

Their isn’t that’s a load of bollocks. Our last Sunday before the crucible we got ITd after church service went to chow came back got more IT went to evening chow got ITd again. It was about 5 hours of a continuous smoke show.

I enlisted in the US Army in 1966. I wanted nothing to do with the Marine Corps. I got off the bus at Fort Campbell at night. The first person I saw was a DI. Looked at his hat attachment and I thought I was dreaming. It was the anchor and the world. I wanted nothing to do with the Corps, but I got a Marine DI on a training exchange program. I survived. Our company was honor company our cycle and our platoon was the honor platoon. We also had the top soldier in the cycle. My DI trained me well and was fair and also became a life long friend.......

I agree. My family has people who have served and I think that every person in this country should do at least two years of military service. I'd join but unfortunately my eyesight is extremely jacked.

Good times. I remember being at the end of second phase and we were in good shape. Somebody pissed off the DI so they started working us over. Then somebody giggled and the DI exploded. He yelled so much he lost his voice for three days!🤣🤣
Yeah dude by the time 3rd phase came about all this was back ground noise...that’s when they started making us fill cargo pockets with sand and stuff.

Got the first actual letter from our son today. He’s on the island now. He says he’s been smoke checked twice so far, but it only lasts 3 minutes. Said PI sucked the first couple of days, but he’s starting to get used to it now. The best part of his letter was the last sentence. “The next time you see me I’ll be a Marine! I love you.” Semper Fi, Son.

@@xiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiix5047Doubtful. If you enlisted in the Corps in 1940 you would have retired by 1960 on the low end and 1970 on the high end. Being a DI is a young (relatively) Marines game in the ranks of Sgt and SSgt. More likely a DI in 1967 already did one or more tours in Vietnam as an PVT through Corporal.
It wasn't the comments really, they could beat the shit out of recruits back then. They can't do that anymore. They just fuck with you in otherwise today.

I think if you were in tip top physical condition, some of boot camp would be fun. But there is a lot of mental work and discipline too, which requires brains as well as brawn.
@@leonandrews7180 Boot camp is more mental then physical , in today's society kids arnt used to being yelled at , told what to , held accountable for their actions . In boot camp all 3 happen daily , plus kids today take what the drill instructor says personally which makes it harder for them . My father was a Korean war veteran he prepared me well for boot camp , before I left for boot camp in 1988 .

I remember doing that “elbows and toes” on the asphalt street in front of our Quonset huts but ONLY our elbows touched because our hands were behind our heads. Some DIs called it “watching TV”. From a second generation Marine, Nam Vet Chu Lai 68-69. My dad, 38-46 Marine WW2 Vet. Miss you dad.

One of my mentor was a US Marines. Now he a Police officer. Anyway he went to San Diego for boot camp over their and he told me that he had to do some paper work or something but when he gave it to the DI it was sloppy so the DI told him That this was crappy as hell and told him to do 500 push up. So he got into a front lean position and he was doing 500 push up by the time he got to 400 something he was sweating from head to toes. But he gave his DI 500 push up.
He wasn't lying. You WILL do them, one way or another.

I remember a lot of our smoke session, they instilled discipline quick and decisive. It was also a training ground to mentally/ physically prepare you for the grueling needs a Marine must face.

SSgt Andino...I met that Marine during my time with 1/2 in Iraq. He was a Sgt then and pretty excited to get orders to the drill field. It's good to see him doing what he was so passionate about back in 2008.

In USAF BMT, we knew our flight had fucked up when our MTI told us it was time to "make the walls cry". This meant packing us all into a small room with stone walls where he could bark out orders for us to do planks, push ups, flutter kicks, high knees, mountain climbers, jumping jacks, etc NON-FUCKING-STOP for at least 30 minutes until yes....we made the walls cry because everyone was sweating so fucking much and panting that the moisture and condensation built up along the walls in the room. We weren't leaving that cramped room until the walls were glistening. Shit was intense. And that was Air Force BMT. Can only imagine what hell they go through in the other branches.
Speaking from experience, Navy boot is the easiest physically. I've trained with both Navy and Air Force and went through AF BMT. But yeah the hardest must be Marines followed by Army
I shipped out to basic April 28th of 2015. At the time, I hated bmt. But now looking back, I wouldn't mind reliving it one more time. I have a lot of good memories from back then.. as strange as that sounds.

It's not a matter of recruits not being able to do what they're told, it's a matter of them not being motivated enough. They can do it, they just don't feel like it, that's when the DI steps in. They show them that they actually do feel like it and it's good. Some sandpit time it also warranted.

Dear god, I remember Staff Sergeant Andino as my kill hat back in Paris Island. The utmost respect for him, but the man was one brutal DI. Amazed at the difference between him speaking calmly in this video vs. how much he destroyed our platoon.
I had a 1SG who was prior service USMC and that man was insane. He would go from congratulating me at being professional, always at parade rest, NEVER looking him in the eyes, to telling me he was gonna field grade me the next morning at chow for not drinking all of the water out of my cup before eating my slop. Semper Fi. Nothing but respect for my brothers in Uniform.

Dang, I remember SSGT Andino when I was going through recruit training in April 2012. I wasn’t in his platoon, but I remember one interaction with him. He was in charge of taking a select number us to dental. I honestly didn’t think we’d ever get there. He kept turning us around. We’d get 20 yards from the barracks, and he’d turn us around and start over since some of us weren’t screaming loud enough. This went on for over an hour. We almost made it to the front door of dental, but because one recruit didn’t scream loud enough, he marched us all the way back to the barracks and started over. In retrospect, it was absolutely hilarious.
He eventually become a First Sergeant and a couple of years ago become a commissioned officer! Second Marine ever two have gone from E-8 to O-1(e)

I was on the quarterdeck once going through the paces, recruit beside me was having a hard time keeping up. With his arms flailing coming up from bends and thrusts the DI stepped into him, I saw out of the corner of my eye the DI flicked his own smokey bear off his head with his thumb and shouted "you just assaulted me!" The next time he came up he received both of the DI's fists square in the chest, hurled into the wall and the hog board fell on top of him as he landed on the deck. Incentive enough for the rest of us to move faster.

I like how all these civilians are putting up statements like "drill sergeants are crazy" or "drill sergeant are insecure" or calling them gay. While they don't know that there is not one drill sergeant in this video, but DIs. It's pretty sad that someone tries to tell actual and former marines about the marine corps but can't distinguish an army drill sergeant from a marine DI. Also everyone tries to take marines egos away from them when they absolutely deserve to be called the best. Marine basic training is a beautiful thing, because while all these civilians see bootcamp as non sense or ridiculous. No group of men can work better as a team and get more attached as family than a marine platoon and a senior DI in basic training. Semper Fi.

An airman definitely can outmatch a Marine . If an airman in a combatives match can out do a Marine then that explains a lot. After graduating BASIC training, you do not automatically become a frikken trained killer who is the most invincible thing on the planet. Having pride in the legacy of a branch is one thing, but saying that that branch is the only one where everyone is better than the rest is arrogant.
Marines just can’t accept that once they get out of boot camp the only difference between them and army is marines have an extra mile on their pt test. So much pride🤣🤣🤣🤣

Nothing but respect for the men and women who go through this training. I see in comments a fair amount of criticism and debate about the approach of such methods. I haven't been through it, so I really don't know. But I have to imagine that it takes some fairly sharp training angles, because when you think about the relatively short amount of time they have to train these recruits vs. what needs to happen in that time...physical, mental, emotional, team building, drills, knowledge, coordination, discipline, courage, accountability, spirit, fortitude, level headedness under duress...it is insane to think about. These recruits are going to be placed in situations where lives and missions are at stake. I suspect that it isn't just rigorous for rigors sake, but because such methods achieve practice to more than one goal at the same time. They really don't have a lot of time to waste. Whatever it is, it is incredible and I appreciate folks that went through this and served so much.

Not in 1988, we didn't. I was in the "every hour club" for shooting one of my Drill Instructors in the back with a blank round at BWT (very comical story now), and boy did I pay the price for that, blouse included.
Everyone that's been through boot knows it's one if the best times of their life. It's so simple to get through and is endless entertainment watching others get yelled at. I was middle of the pack. Never got yelled at once, never the best but kept up just right with everything. When you graduate and they don't know your name you're gonna do just fine moving forward.

Marine Drill instructors are hilariously fucking badass, the sweat on them while instructing IT really shows the motivation and the drive that they put on the recruits.
I must disagree with those who badmouth the quality of the USMC as a combat outfit. Please remember that the USMC defeated Japanese soldiers at every major battle from Guadalcanal on, though it was a rough fight, and I promise you that Japanese were more hard corps then than they are now. The Germans, as good as they were, also were defeated, though at great cost. I don't know how you can cmpare the current germany and japan to US Marines - how much combat have those two countries seen since WW2? I didn't see any German or Japanese soldiers at the Chosin resevoir, Khe Sahan, Saigon, Desert Storm, or the recent wars in A-stan and Iraq (where the current pres abandoned the effort while the Marines etc were doing quite well). The German and Japanese armed forces are quite good I'm sure, but there is no way one can say Americans dn't come close. Respectfully.....

When I was there, the DIs had no limitations, they smoked us all day, I was third battalion, in the back of PI, with the sand pits, the recruit next to me asked several times to make a head call after we just woke up and were standing on line, he pissed his pants at POA. The DIs made him do front lean and rests until he finally collapsed in his own piss, fuckin classic! God I love my Marine Corps!!
Okay, so when did you go thru P.I.? And exactly where was 3rd battalion..."in the back of PI"...can you elaborate on the location? Your story sounds like complete B.S....btw what the hell are "front leans and rests"? (a U.S. Marine vet who actually went thru Parris Island in '75).
What company? I was India Co. and I remember playing 4 Corners on the parade deck when we were practicing for drill.

Liar. They've had limitations since the DI marched the boots into the swamp and some died. This was in the forties I believe.
I got IT for laughing about a month ago. This super tall skinny DI brought me to the pit and had me laugh while doing the exercises. He also laughed demonically at me. Even though it was hot as hell and painful, it was pretty fun.
Our DI would have everybody ELSE in the platoon "thrash" and have the culprit stand there and make them laugh at the platoon while thrashing. Retribution came in the squadbay after "lights out".
If you are a poolee watching this remember this: For every mistake I make whether intended or not, someone else will feel/ suffer for it in some degree (large or small). I was in United States Marine Corps Recruit Training 50 years ago.
I'm now 67 years and 8-months old, and I'll be 67 years and 9 months old next week. Yet, I am actually stronger today than when I was an active-duty United States Marine Corps 0331 M-60 Machine Gunner. Biologically aging hasn't made me weaker, but stronger.

During my stay at PI, there were a few limitation on what the DI's could do, but what happens in the squad bay stays in the squad bay. We called mostly called it getting quarter decked, but the term smoked was also used with some frequency. .
When you watch this video you think how awesome it is but you see these marines in combat or finishing boot camp prayers out to them
I went through MCRD 3RD Recruit Training Battalion in July, 1988. As far as I know our Drill Instructors did not have time restrictions on instilling discipline in recruits. If we did something wrong we would be on the Quarterdeck being dug. Believe you me none of our Drill Instructors minded at all that they would dig us until our hearts exploded. How times change.
They actually have a lot (or at least some) rules only few probably know of--during the rifle range at 3rd H around the same time you were there, me and another dude got guard duty while everyone else went to mess duty. Suckers. Snooping and pooping on guard duty (very carefully, and just a little) I saw a card DI's carried and had in their hats that one of them had left in their little DI hut while everyone was at mess duty--it was a rules book of some sort, it said they couldn't smoke people earlier than 30 minutes after chow and all that--I had no idea, though, they had such rules or any rules, really.
My husband enlisted in the Marine Corps before he graduated high school in 1967. He went to Parris Island for his basic training!!!!!!! The Marine Corps was a lot tougher on their recruits then than they are now!!!!! My husband survived two tours in Vietnam thanks to his Drill Sergeant!!!!!!!!!! OORAH!!!!!!

I remember requesting to be IT by my Kill hat. His response was, "Gooooooooooood!!! Get on my quarter deck. I'm going to slay you." I told him, "This recruit has to use the head first." then he said, "Yes, go ahead! Then come back here and I will slay you." He disappointed me when he did not remember his promise to IT me 3 times a day. They actually wouldn't IT me anymore because I liked being IT.

You know, back in 2004 in 3rd recruit training battalion, they used to put their hands on us when we messed up. I didn’t like it, but as I’ve aged and understood the importance of why it was done that way, it makes sense now. They were trying to get raw recruits trained as quick as possible with limited amounts of time with each individual recruits. I respect my drill instructors and don’t take it personally due to the lessons of paying attention to details. It all adds up. Having dead batteries when you need to use the radio is problematic when you need to call a medevac or having enough body bags which we lost teammates in combat.

Went through basic training Cdn Armed Forces '81 in Cornwallis, Nova Scotia - this was our daily routine. 9th platoon C company artillery. I was 17 at the time - and thankfully in good shape before I enlisted.
There were a lot things our Drill Instructors weren't "suppose" to do in boot camp at M.C.R.D. San Diego in 1979. They did them anyway. Most of us survived.
I remember getting smoked for almost 2 weeks straight because a Marine stationed at my recruiting office, intercepted a letter from a recruit who referred to one of our Green Belt DI’s, as a “Butt-Head”! He didn’t get the name, only that he was recruited out of his office.
It was horrible! The DI’s literally made sure that everyone recruited from our city was on the Quarterdeck or The Pit, whenever we were not doing regular training. Plus, two hours of fire watch every night for all of us. I swear, everyone in our platoon got plenty of sleep during that time! We all confessed after a few days, but since none of us knew what the Hell they were talking about, they continued our suffering.
Fate intervened when the Marine came to MCRD to see if he could beat it out of us. While he was helping the DI’s grill us, the guilty recruit just happened to walk past, and he said “Wait, that wasn’t what the letter said”! This punk was recruited out of our city, but he didn’t come forward as one of us because he lived in a different city from the recruiting station. We lost a lot of weight because of him. I don’t remember what they did to him afterwards. I know his punishment wasn’t as bad as what we got. He definitely graduated with us.

Other Marines used to hate or despise getting IT'd, but shit it made me strong as fuck going into ITB and I blew through the even strenuous portions of the training for the mortars.
as an infantry veteran i can say there is a huge difference between military and the infantry when it comes to getting smoked. this is definitely NOT the infantry
Me and I.T were the greatest of friends. This is when I.T was common usually visited everyday throughout the day.
It doesn't matter if you try to "keep a low profile" your ass is getting IT'ed one way or another. Plus you actually end up enjoying it, it's the best workout you can honestly get haha. When I was in SOI we kept saying how we missed getting IT'ed.

Ah, memories! This reminds me of doing push ups on the quarterdeck, in puddles of sweat, next to the guide, and fellow squad leaders. Going through it, you hated life. Looking back, all you can do is laugh and remember it as a pretty good time.

Airforce basic is a lot easier and less intense than Marine boot camp. I am currently a navy seal in the army but I used to be a navy pararescueman. I was also a marine sniper in the army... lol what I just said made no sense. I'm not really in the military, but for those that are or have been, THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE! What happens if a marine just refuses to do the it? Would they be allowed to beat them up or something? Like what happens when stubborn recruits just say no. I'm sure there's been cases of those?

Nate-In boot camp if you refuse to train you will eventually be kicked out. We had a recruit join our platoon in the middle of boot camp who was refusing to train. Other than the DIs screaming at him all the time and making his life miserable there wasn't much they could do. After a few weeks he got non judicial punishment and the MPs came and hauled him away. I assume to process him out of the Marine Corps.
You get to crawl back home with your tail tucked between your legs, and also left with the memories that you were a total shitbag who couldn't hack it, that's how they weed out the turds! You'll start out with a large number of recruits per platoon, then that will get dwindled down to about 65 or so. Also I'm referring to you as a shitbag, just people in general who join then can't adjust to boot camp, that's what happens.
