      It is as ridiculous as what people buy for babies. Babies need a diaper and t-shirt in summer. In winter layer a long sleeve top and pants. No shoes until they walk! Use a dresser drawer or laundry basket for "crib". When outgrown, then put a mattress on the floor. My neighbor bought $10k baby gear! I was shocked as they can't pay their bills. For toys, pots/pans, spoons, ball, cardboard boxes, etc.

      Real world: in 2022 we did a birthday party for 15 nine year old girls Saturday for $200. I made the cake. Dad did tie dye with the girls, they did little sand art vases (their projects made up their party bags), my daughter did email invitations. Pizza, fruit and cheese platter (we had some parents who had stayed)- DONE, and they had an absolute blast. And my granddaughter is old enough that she will remember the party.

      This episode is probably about a decade old, so it was in the "free money" phase of the economy before the great recession in North America. Anyone and everyone could apply for cards they couldn't afford because of the credit bubble. And, honestly, regardless of recessions, credit companies BANK on getting interest/late fees from people who can't pay their statements in full each month.

    • @astrea79

      This was before a lot of the consumer credit card reforms made after the 2008 recession, but it's still very easy to get approved for a credit card. Especially if they're from sketchy banks that charge a boat load of interest and fees. Stores also have really lenient credit cards approval rates, which is probably why this woman who loves to shop has so many. I'm guessing at least half of them are store credit cards.

      My mom had a house and two kids and two cars at my age because it was the economy of the 90s.

    • @americandevo
      @americandevo Рік тому

      @thicccemogf3488 lighttheway5088 is exactly right.
      The "economy" has nothing to do with it.
      Nobody wants to start off with hand me down used stuff, they want all brand new nice things from the start so they buy it on credit.
      Nobody wants to "rough it" and start out at the bottom and work their way up.
      They want it all, they want it now - then they try to blame economics for their failure to achieve.
      I left home at 18 with next to nothing: a 25 yr old mattress on the floor, a used sofa from a neighbor's garage and an old stereo. I had no car, no TV and no telephone. I never ate out and sometimes barely ate a day or 2 before payday.
      When credit cards came in the mail I cut them up.
      When I married my husband we both worked full time while he finished college. He borrowed only what he needed to cover some of his tuition and we paid it off in 3 years before we had kids.
      Our first home was a very modest starter home, I was a stay at home mother and we had only one car until I got a part time job while the kids were in school.
      We entertained ourselves by fishing, going to the park, visiting seniors in nursing homes and did other free things and did not hang around in the mall. We ate home cooked meals and eating out was saved for a special occasion.
      ALL of the above CAN be done today but people choose not to do it and then blame someone or something else for THEIR bad choices.

I was with a couple men like that and I refuse to ever, ever in my lifetime be with someone again who doesn't work as much as I do.

    It's tragic that love for his wife and child wasn't sufficient for him to "man up" as the saying goes. His life looks bleak unless he changes his way, which seems doubtful. I don't think the wife thought he was carrying his weight, but she didn't want to disrespect him in front of a Television audience. Very kind of her and probably part of her culture, as well.

    My husband and i are doing pretty well. I bought a budget book for next year and started filling in the regular bills. We already keep our grocery bill at a nice number. So glad my husband is on board with being more mindful so we can better tackle my student loans. Im hopeful to get that whittled down significantly in the next 18months! It was the calmest money talk ive ever had with a partner! His overtime this month went to christmas for the kids and that was with reigning him in. He loves to spoil his kids (which are his step kids).

      Yes we have usually minimal “account fees” or something extra like an over draft protection fee or a fee to take a deposit from an account that I meant to hold money longer term. For these folks in the show, I think it is mostly they are withdrawing over their limit, using non bank ATMs, etc
