Imagine how awesome it must have felt to be that Chargers DB who ran back the game sealing pick six, just barreling full speed towards the end zone as fans barrage you with snowballs while you're wearing a near impenetrable suit of armor. You gotta feel invincible
Not only was Dan Reeves involved in both snowball games, he was also a member of the Cowboys during the Ice Bowl and even scored a touchdown during it! What are the odds?
It definitely is no joke. Throwing pure ice at that speed and at that distance is like chucking bricks. Can confirm it will ruin your day, maybe longer, if you get hit in the head.
I remember when I was young and threw a piece of ice at a passing car. I got grounded for a week and my parents had to pay the guy's bodywork bill. Last time I ever did that.
I remember watching this game live when it happened. Sad fact: Rodney Culver of the Chargers scored his last career touchdown in this game. Five months later, he was killed in the ValuJet crash in the Florida Everglades.
Wow, for whatever random reason I was thinking about that crash a few days ago and remembered there being a pro athlete involved, but couldn't think of who. Then I read your comment on thus video and connection made. Crazy and sad fact.
I was a Chargers season ticket holder when that Giants’ game happened. The next time the Giants came to San Diego, I came REALLY close to buying a bunch of white styrofoam balls, writing “NY Giants Suck” on them, bringing them to the game, and throwing them onto the field.
Giants fan here. I remember watching this very game on TV back in '95,and remember being heated about the fans doing all that- and in a meaningless,non-conference game for the Giants while their season was basically over. I'm sorry your guys had to go through that, especially that one coach who was beaned right on the head and dropped. If you had done that and wound up on national TV, I would not even have been mad. I'd have gotten a laugh out of it. That whole day was embarrassing
This was the last game I went to at the old Giant Stadium…it was absolute chaos for sure! Fortunately we sat in middle deck and were spared getting caught in any crossfire. Love this channel! I thoroughly enjoy watching!
There is just something special about when snow falls on a football game. I'll never forget the 10 inches of snow I played in when I was 13 one of the best times of my lifeeee
Good on Dan Reeves, I feel like there are some coaches who would shrug it off and say the 49ers should just deal with it ‘that’s the game’ kinda guys, but he rightfully called it out both times.
I can't believe they didn't just blow the play dead and replay the down. Maybe there's "no recourse" to call a penalty in the rulebook, but surely you can at least treat it like an inadvertent whistle or something.
Reeves was also coaching in Denver when the Dawg Pound pelted the Broncos with batteries and trash, and the referee ordered the teams to switch end zones in the middle of a quarter.
100% agree. Sure, each person has to take accountability for their actions, but there's no reason that he got pinpointed out of the probably thousands of snowballs being thrown.
I remember listening to this game in the car on the way to visit family for Christmas. I was a kid, and my dad turned it off when it got out of control.
Something similar happened just after this video in the Bills home game against the Dolphins. Buffalo had received 7 inches of snow and at points pelting the field with it. The refs threatened a 15 yard penalty if it didn't stop and after the game Mike McDaniel said he was worried about people getting hurt. Dawson Knox went on a podcast and said that there was nothing the refs could actually do about that because there's nothing in the rulebook about it and they came over and told Sean McDermott, "Hey, we can't actually enforce this, we just had to say that to get them to stop"
KTOOOOOOO!! Just in time for Xmas! I was a teen when I watched this game. At first I thought it was kinda funny but when people started getting hurt and messing with the game, not cool.
Me and my dear Mom (the sports fan in the family) watched this game together. Even more thrilling live. (exception to people getting hurt) Miss you every day, Christine. 😢
I miss hearing Bob Sheppard announce Giants and Yankees games. They seriously screwed up not calling the game early. Then a few years later we had that beer bottle fiasco involving the Browns.
Another option would have been to suspend the game and eject all the fans and then finish it. I'm 99% sure this was actually a Saturday game late in the season, so that could have been an option. Maybe even finish it on Sunday if the Jets weren't at home.
You should look into the infamous Santa game back in the 1968 when Eagles fans turned on a poor dude dressed as Santa who was thrown out onto the half-time show because the original Santa hired couldn't make it due to weather, and the halftime show planned fell apart.
If I remember correctly the original Santa showed up drunk and then they got the other guy? The only thing I do remember was it was a game against the Vikings. The eagles lost the OJ Simpson sweepstakes. The eagles got pick sixed and the fans were pissed off. I think nobody was hurt but idk I'm a biased birds fan.
There's a bit more backstory involved here. The 1968 Eagles were terrible, and started 0-11. At that point, most fans resigned to the idea of just losing out and getting the #1 pick in the draft. But then the Eagles won 2 meaningless games in a row, meaning no #1 pick. So, when the season finale came and the fan in the Santa Claus outfit came out to celebrate, all the Eagles fans were extremely pissed off at the team and organization, and were in no mood for that shit. Mind you, I'm not trying to justify what the fans did, because it was wrong. I'm just putting it in full context.
@@IBangedUrMom69420 Yet these same mfs forget the time during the 9ers Cowboys playoff game they threw trash at players and the field when they lost and Dak defended them and months later in Week 1 Cowboys fans threw trash at Dak when he got injured and he DEFENDED THEM AGAIN
I find it wild that there was a game Philidelphia fans have became infamous for, in terms of those fans notoriety as being unruly degenerates known for booing moreso then cheering (unless its for a opposing player being hurt) in which they pelted Santa due to anger with the teams performance. And that gets talked about pretty freely. But a game like this or bottlegate as you pointed out on a prior video rarely do. This is pretty damn horrible considering a guy like that equipment manager could've gotten badly hurt! I didn't even remember this game! It's wild how the NFL tends to pick and choose what games historically they would prefer to bury. Especially with the media on site being about as blunt as could be reasonably on television at the time.
When I was a kid my Pops brought me all the way down from Glens Falls NY to watch that game. Every time a Chargers player reached the endzone all we could see at the ENTIRE opposite end of the stadium was a white blanket of snowballs that looked like a giant white V that funneled down to the handful of chargers players celebrating in the end zone. The stadium seating isles were all full of snow and every bit of it was heavy wet and packed snow. Shit was nuts.
Playing football in snow is amazing. I still remember playing on our college field after a big dump (this wasn't a game I was just a student who was playing with friends on the weekend).
when jimmy johnson was coaching the cowboys; they played a game in philadelphia where the fans went crazy with throwing snowballs. fast forward a few years later and jimmy is now broadcasting a game in philadelphia and the fans chanted "we want jimmy" [as a coach] but i'm sure he remembered that day being pelted by snowballs
I used to play exhibition madden games in Madden 05 because you could change and customize the weather and I would make them play in a foot of snow etc because it looked so cool, I just remember my mom seeing it once and saying “why are you doing that to them”!! Mom it’s a game!!😂
It's amazing how I've lived 24 years and never heard about any of this, yet I've heard thousands of times as a philly fan about us throwing snowballs at Santa which happened (1968) before majority of the coaches in the NFL were even alive
