But it was the DNA test that helped them find each other. They didn't do a DNA test to confirm, rather they did a DNA test and it allowed them to find each other. Cases like this happen a lot now, someone looking for family members does a DNA test and finds a relative in the database, they then contact that relative which often times leads to happy reunions.

Similar story with my mom. My grandfather served in the Vietnam war, and they lost touch. I got her a DNA test for Christmas 2 years ago, and since then she’s connected with the other half of her family. So crazy to see so many other similar stories..

I doubt there are many of those. ....It's not like U.S. soldiers in Iraq or Afghanistan were allowed to go off-base and carouse with the locals as they could in Germany, Japan, Korea, Vietnam, etc..
I didn't serve in Iraq. I served in the U.S. Army in Korea in the '80s. So, those of you who did, can correct me on how the situation was in Iraq and Afghanistan -- or anywhere else in the Middle East. ....But, from what little I could glean from the media coverage, it doesn't seem like our G.I.s mingled with locals (particularly the women) as they would in places outside the Islamic world.

None of that happened with the U.S. in recent mid east wars. No hundreds of thousands of prostitutes to service American service men. No casual dating between U.S. troops and civilians, and the subsequent half American children left behind. Reason being, Islam and most Muslim culture/s forbid it strongly. Especially if non Muslims are involved. On the flip side U.S. Servicemen left hundreds of thousands of babies behind in Germany, Philippines, Vietnam, Korea etc..

Honestly appalled by all the comments claiming that US soldiers are excused from leaving behind children/women just because they were "stationed and mingled." It just goes to show how many Americans are uninformed about the Vietnam war and the atrocities committed by US Soldiers (which is why the Vietnam war is regarded as one of the biggest mistakes America's ever made.) People often don't realize that many of these half children in Vietnam were a result of rape when soldiers would "survey and canvas" villages when in reality they were looting and massacring Vietnamese. The biggest example was the My Lai Massacre and I implore anyone unfamiliar with these atrocities to actually look into it.

Thats how things are when American soldiers have a base on a country, they are stationed there, they'll meet and interact with the locals, they are just painted a bad picture because SOME of the jobs these locals were practicing back then were in the sex work and night life industry. Most American soldiers either felt lonely or want to have some fun during their tenure there hence why they were engaging in these kind of things

It is true. In that time, this happened to a lot of service members. Some were genuine relationships and some were just there for a boom boom. The picture tells it all and he did love her mom, got her pregnant but you cant just simply bring them back home to the US and certainly he was not going to stay in vietnam while the NVA took over. At that time, they did not have land lines at each home. They were villages. Maybe at a local call station in their village or whoever in their village had a land line but those were all destroyed during the war. So he went back to the US and I bet even finding a name would generate a thousand similar names and a maybe a station phone number had changed without notice. You can't find your gf at that point.
