  • I hope you find this video a little helpful, especially for those wondering about the products and techniques of my underpainting process.
Obviously, there is so much more information we can pack into this topic, but I just wanted to share the basics of "what is underpainting", "what are the benefits", and the process I have developed that works for me.
What work for me won't necessarily work for you, but I will advise experimenting, finding out what you like, and what excites you, and start developing your own way of creating.
I share only a few reasons why I love this process and why I prefer the color, but I can go on and on, finding more reasons why I specifically fell in love with this process.

Your process is very interesting and you use some of the materials I too enjoy using. Charcoal, black pan pastel. I also like to use black with a splash of orange or yellow. It was interesting to see that you don't need to use fixative before adding your transparent glaze. I might have to try that. Your artwork came out amazing, very well done. Onwards !!

Just to add, it would be better to mix in some matte acrylic medium (not glossy) with the paint if you will use it as an underpainting for oil paints.

I ve recently started enjoying the application of gesso to prevent the canvas later on absorbing the paint

@@LizelleStruwigArt I've read that even gesso can soak up or suck oils out of your paint. So another layer of paint is needed, like an acrylic underpainting, or a special oil medium that's designed to seal the canvas or on top of the the gesso to seal it completely.

@@JoyceAnderson-ChristianMusic never had this problem but depending on the gesso brand, some really isn’t nice for me to paint on with oils. But there are some I’ve tried that I like.
I would actually recommend oil ground from Gamblin. I haven’t tried it myself but I will definitely.

Hey. I read that charcoal has the tendency to rise up through the paint layers even when dried. I saw a couple of example of old master paintings where there were charcoal marks became visible after decades or centuries and are really impacting the work. Do you have any experience with that?

@@boooo6789 very interesting, I can’t say that I have. I am aware that painting oils over alcohol inks have that tendency though. Maybe it’s the type of charcoal or paint used. 😊

H E L P - Many years ago I did a thinned down with water underpainting in acrylics exactly like you did in your video. After it was dry, then daily for over a month I worked on a painting in oils over it. To my total shock and horror, after several weeks my oil paint seemed to lose it's adhesion to the canvas and began cracking and parts just started peeling off. I was horrified. It was one of the best paintings I've ever done in my life and it was totally ruined! I've read that thinning down acrylics too much with water, leaves not enough binder and will cause future layers to come loose and separate from the canvas. BUT I see your and many other artist videos thinning their acrylic underpaintings exactly like you did, and painting oils on top successfully. Please help me. I really want to do oil portraits now on top of a thinned acrylic underpainting. So I ask .... How long do you let the acrylic underpainting dry? I let mine dry only maybe 2 days I think before starting oils over it. Could that have been the problem? I really need an answer ASAP please?
    joyce

@@JoyceAnderson-ChristianMusic I am so sorry that happend! 😔
I am not as experienced in acrylics… I honestly never had this problem before. Many artist prefer to use a thinning medium instead of water, maybe you can give that a try or try a transparent fluid acrylic instead(without the need to add water). I leave my acrylic layer to dry for a day. But thats not even necessary as long as the surface or canvas is not cold to the touch, it’s usually fine.
I don’t know if you’ve used gesso? Thick layer/s of gesso that’s not completely dried could also lead to problems.
Painting with oils however : it’s important to also remember the “fat over lean” rule meaning you must always apply a paint with higher oil to pigment ratio over paint with a ratio the other way around… for example if you use mediums such as lindseed oil… the more lindseed oil you add to your paint = fat
Preferably don’t use out of the tube paint over a paint layer thinned with lindseed oil for example. Because the layer underneath which is “fatter” will take longer to dry and could also cause cracks.
You can find more info on this rule on the internet that will probably do a better job explaining.😄
Also in my personal opinion that oil to pigment ratio can vary depending on the brands of oil paint, and so I would recommend trying to stick to one brand as far as it’s possible. Or to one or two pretty good/decent quality brands. But this is just my personal opinion.
Other that that I am not sure what could have been the cause.

@@LizelleStruwigArt Thanks Hon. You are very thorough on this subject. Since you and other artists seem to never have this problem, I'm concluding, like you did, that the problem was something else. I'm guessing that my acrylic underpainting simply hadn't dried enough. Next time I'll I'll stick with thinned oils for my underpainting and wait several days even after touch dry, before painting the next layer. .... Thanks again for taking so much time to help. Hugs!

We learn best by experimenting and by seeing what works and what not. At the end of the day your process should work for you. You must enjoy it.
If you sketch first I would recommend spraying your sketch with a fixative before going in with oil paints.
      Good luck and happy painting😁
