Underpainting process, prepping a canvas for a new oil painting
I hope you find this video a little helpful, especially for those wondering about the products and techniques of my underpainting process.
Obviously, there is so much more information we can pack into this topic, but I just wanted to share the basics of "what is underpainting", "what are the benefits", and the process I have developed that works for me.
What work for me won't necessarily work for you, but I will advise experimenting, finding out what you like, and what excites you, and start developing your own way of creating.
I share only a few reasons why I love this process and why I prefer the color, but I can go on and on, finding more reasons why I specifically fell in love with this process.

Thank you so much… ☺️ I have a few step by step tutorials on the colorbyfeliks youtube channel (on smaller artworks.) You can have a look on my Instagram, under the story highlight “tutorials”
can you post a full video of some steps in this painting
Unfortunately I don’t have a lot of footage of this painting… But I have a video on my beginning process. Don’t know if this will help but I start with sketching using panpastel to add my shadows and then a layer of acrylic paint. After that I start with the oils. For the fur I first blocked in some colours and then patiently layered hair (layer on layer going with a lighter colour each new layer) after it dried I glazed some areas to bring back colour.😀
Thank you for the amazing information! <3
@@ririkaasmr-qo5rz thank you for watching😊
Your underpainting is in acrylic, and the rest is oil paint ? Right do you mix the oils with a medium fir the fat over Lean concept
@@user-ws1qp6mx5s You can paint oil over acrylic just not acrylic over oils. 😊
I really searching for this thankyou
it looks amazing !!
@@J-1-N-X thank you 🙏
How long does it take to make something like that, that's beautiful
@@ImScoooping thank you 🙏 , this one was around 2 weeks
Beautiful, this is so underrated
You’re so kind, thank you🌸
Just love it!!
Do you use gesso to prep your canvas
@@user-ws1qp6mx5s sometimes, but not always. Depending on the canvas.
Your process is very interesting and you use some of the materials I too enjoy using. Charcoal, black pan pastel. I also like to use black with a splash of orange or yellow. It was interesting to see that you don't need to use fixative before adding your transparent glaze. I might have to try that. Your artwork came out amazing, very well done. Onwards !!
Hey. I read that charcoal has the tendency to rise up through the paint layers even when dried. I saw a couple of example of old master paintings where there were charcoal marks became visible after decades or centuries and are really impacting the work. Do you have any experience with that?
@@boooo6789 very interesting, I can’t say that I have. I am aware that painting oils over alcohol inks have that tendency though. Maybe it’s the type of charcoal or paint used. 😊
You are still so underrated!!! I'm sorry I haven't been watching your videos in awhile I've been busy with my channel lol❤❤❤
Can we continue with acrylic after underpainting and not with oil's?
Yes of course 😊
Bonjour quel magnifique travai👏👏
Loved your paintings.would pan pastel be ok under an all acrylic paining.?
Thank you. Yes it will 😇
So you use acrylic as baground and then finish it with oil painting
Yes 👍

Yes, I live in the Westen Cape.
but if u ARE from south africa i live in benoni
