    I came to find Hitchens on Watts. Your putting them together is really all for which I was looking. I’m 55 and a voluntarily former Roman Catholic priest feeling like “Brooks” in Shawshank Redemption upon his departure from prison after so many years. I am currently searching for a good non-religious Jewish psychiatrist on Long Island in New York. Be well, fellows.

    hitchens opened my eyes , what a legacy to leave behind , to open peoples eyes , make them question , doubt , to think for themselves , and most of all , not to be afraid of death.

    04:33 EXACTLY the point I've been making all these years! Why is "nothing" so hard for people to understand? Think of it as your state before you were born. Did you feel anything? No. Did you realize that it's been 14 billion or so years since the universe expanded until the day you were born? No. You were just born. But that state before you had conscience, that's what death would feel like. We have no good reason to believe otherwise. And, at least for me, that does not trouble me one bit.

    Ancient philosophers like Plato said that if the gods never existed we'd still have need to invent them.
    Perhaps the irrational hostility towards atheism, All stems from theists subconscious desire to prevent their sheltered their psyche from opening up to the real grim reality of existence.

    • @WhiteBraveheart1
      @WhiteBraveheart1 8 років тому

      Lord Sathanus I think that death would be terrifying without religion, or some concept of the afterlife. The fact that Nietzsche and Sarte follow atheism through to its logical conclusion (no matter how many times they contradict themselves with their practical decisions and philosophies), I am deeply appreciative. God Bless

    • @solidus1995
      @solidus1995 8 років тому +1

      +James Wallace what contradictions are you referring to, if I may ask?

    • @WhiteBraveheart1
      @WhiteBraveheart1 8 років тому

      Sure.
      Nietzsche claimed there were no objective truths (including this one). He spoke out against what he thought were moral evils, even though he admitted that such "evils" aren't objectively wrong, he just dislikes another's actions. He spoke about values as though they were objective, even though he stated they could never be. Whenever it was brought up to him that he was contradicting himself, he said so much the better.
      I admire Nietzsche for at least admitting that there really is no good or evil, ultimately.
      Sarte claimed there is no such thing as true love, yet he spoke of many causes and individuals as though he personally loved them, and that's how we would identify his feelings.
      I appreciate that he at least admits that without God, there can't be these supposed "values" harnessed objectively.
      They're at least honest atheists -- realizing that they're men straining for purpose in a purposeless universe, for meaning in a meaningless universe.
      Atheists today claim you really can have meaning in a universe that turns you back to dust, which I think Nietzsche and Sarte would've rightfully laughed at. They're correct.
      God Bless

      @@WhiteBraveheart1 I've asked quite a lot of people (atheist, agnostic, religious) and find that most aren't in the slightest worried about non-existence. It's the act of dying that they worry about.
      Atheists/agnostics and theists conclude the same thing -- that life is absurd. You don't agree because you've subscribed to a particular faith.
      Humans were not evolved to think deeply. If they were in deep thought during the formative era of our evolution, they would have been wiped out. Think about that

    My point is, why would anyone fear unconsciousness/death, when we've all been there before our birth. That's all what I wanted to say. There's nothing scary about the state of 'before birth,' so why would 'after death' scare people? I'm not saying I know 100% that that's exactly what's gonna happen after we die, but we have no logical reason to think otherwise.

    • @jeremyfoster8726

      I don't fear non-being. I am in a state of being and fear the end of it -- simple as that.

      I have had this same thought about several people other than just Alan Watts...like Nietszche. I'm assuming he was neither entirely impressed or disgusted with him. Hitchens tends to let you know when someone impresses or passes him off.

    the music takes away from the words.. if you feel compelled to put music in to make it more dramatic, you are already seeking an audience who isnt truly listening.
