  • Christopher Eric Hitchens was an English author and journalist whose books, essays, and journalistic career spanned more than four decades. He was a columnist and literary critic at The Atlantic, Vanity Fair, Slate, World Affairs, The Nation, Free Inquiry, and became a media fellow at the Hoover Institution in September 2008. He was a staple of talk shows and lecture circuits and in 2005 was voted the world's fifth top public intellectual in a Prospect/Foreign Policy poll. He was a champion for atheism, skepticism, science, history and common sense. He will be sorely missed.

      I know how it feels. My greatest regret in life is knowing that I once was a Christian - only now do I realize that the whole crux of the religion is hatred and lies, whilst it shrouds itself in love and kindness to draw people in. Well done for escaping, brother. You're not alone.

    I started exploring and seeking to understand my atheism after my husband died in March of 2011. I found Christopher Hitchens and his debates on UA-cam and the astounding intelligence and eloquence that was his style. He could rip someone a new asshole by weaving words together in a way that I had never seen before. I wrote to him when I found out that he had cancer, offering words , albeit not nearly as poised or displaying a fraction of the mastery that he had over the English language, of encouragement and also thanking him for helping me wrestle with my grief in the loss of my husband. I am overwhelmed with just how lucky I was to be alive during a time where I could meet my husband and spend the 11 years I did with him, and that I lived during the same time as Christopher Hitchens. Thank you for making such a wonderful tribute, it contains one of my favorite quotes of his about death, "It will happen to all of that at some point you'll be tapped on the shoulder and told, not just that the party is over, but slightly worse: the party's going on but you have to leave."

    I have read all this man's books. I firmly believe that he should be taught in all the schools. People would have been suppressed and shunned in years gone by. Thankfully we live in a more inspired aged but we still have long way to go. This man said it how it was. Even a former RC like myself totally agree with every word he says for organised religion. If you never read any book or do not read much I would recommend any of his works as a total eye opener.

    I have not always been an atheist, but because of the greatness of the minds of men like Christopher Hitchens I evolved. And I am proud to say that atheists didn´t replace angels (which would probably label christias demons)(also mind the slight sarcasm, as something so obvious doesn´t really make you proud, its rather so that you are shocked upon realizing what a foolish person you once were to believe in such nonsensical ideas), but I was able to change the categories I think in and hold dear. Thank you Christopher!

Dillahunty specializes in demolishing fallacious argumentation. Both are highly specialized in their fields and we need them both.

    The ancient Greek philosopher Socrates challenged the assumptions of his world. He may have not always been right, but the true value of this views were in the argument itself. Having the debate, to him, was more important than being right. He sparked a revolution of reason that endures to this day.
    Hitch loved argument, and like Socrates he questioned the long held assumptions of our world. Whether or not you agree with his point of view, the true value of his contribution is in the discussion, in having the argument and bringing reason to bear against superstition.
    There is a quote by Socrates that I believe Hitch would endorse;
    "I cannot teach anybody anything, I can only make them think."

    • @twisantigo
      @twisantigo 10 років тому

      I'm a Christian, I'll leave you a comment. You must be really proud of Hitch, huh. Well, since Hitch can't speak to you now, I'll speak for him: Read the Word of God and obey it. Or else you'll suffer eternally just as I am right now. I should've taken it to heart when I read, "The fool has said in his heart 'there is no God.'"

    • @twisantigo
      @twisantigo 10 років тому

      It's not God's will for everyone to suffer eternally! What does 2 Peter 3:9 (in God's Word) say? "....for God does not wish that any man should perish, but that ALL should come to ETERNAL LIFE." You need to quit listening to atheists who merely claim to know what God thinks. If you would actually read the bible, you'd see that God is a JUST God.

    • @twisantigo
      @twisantigo 10 років тому

      Common sense? But how can you deny the accuracy, the prophecies, the history, and the fact that though the bible was penned by over 40 authors over almost 2,000 years, and there's not a single contradiction? And yes, God does have a problem with sin. So much so, that He sent His Son to die because we sinned, and because He loves us, so that we don't have to spend eternity in hell! How can God not be just when He gives all men the opportunity to do the right thing?

    • @twisantigo
      @twisantigo 10 років тому

      Look, you're claiming God is a sick, psychopathic being. And you're strictly basing it on your own belief. The all-wise God knows what He is doing. Since man was created, there has been constant rebellion against God. Why would it be wrong for God to just wipe us all out? Don't we deserve it? We are the ones who sin, not Him! But there's no need for anyone to die in Hell!!! He actually loves us enough to give us second chances, after second chances, after second chances. That doesn't sound psychopathic!

    • @twisantigo
      @twisantigo 10 років тому

      A sin is a transgression of God's will. God has told us everything we need to know in His Word about how to be right. He says that we need to repent of our sins (to be sorry about the wrongs we've done and to change), to confess Jesus is the Son of God before men, and to be baptized in water to have our sins washed away. Once we've done these things, we must remain faithful to Him. Sure, we'll slip up and sin from time to time (we are human after all), but 1 John tells us that as long as we're not willfully committing sin after sin after sin (as long as we're trying to be right), He will continue to forgive us. And yes, we do only deserve what God says, because after all, He did create us! What right does the creation have over the Creator?

    This is inspiring in the way that it exceeds the common atheist vs. theist debate.
    Chances are that 90% of people that're here are fans of The Hitch and their faith or lack there of is solidified.
    What Hitchens means to describe is that atheism can still be empowering and has its own novelty without deity. Not that we're necessarily better but being atheistic is something we can find a great amount of confidence and accomplishment from !

    Any male, gay or straight, who can understand the words spoken by Christopher Hitchens ought to fall in love with him. This man through his style, delivery, & through having right on his side deserves more love than the most beautiful & perfect sexual fantasy any man or woman can conjure. This man was brilliance on legs. He was courage, accuracy, & irony wrapped up in skin and bone. Heroes don't need heroes, & so he had none, although I needed him. The world needed him, as it still does.

    One year now since he died...
    It IS up to us to carry on the fight, as Tennyson said,
    "To seek, to strive, to find, and never to yield."
    If that doesn't describe the tenacity and determination of Hitchens and what such an intellectual represented, still represents to us today, I don't know what does.

    Death cannot prevent Hitch from getting his message across. I just learned about him last month. I was a christian before that. That man truly liberated me by turning me into an atheist.

    We will..
    I discovered this virtuous of mind and speech to late...long after his death.
    Although already an atheist, in a very non religious country, I looked around and saw the apologetic done in the name of religion and excuses done no secular organisations would have been granted.
    And when I looked outside into world it was even worse...
    Reason must prevail for the sake of my children..
    Thank you Christopher Hitchens for waking up my sleeping mind.

    I have no idea when I decided to become an atheist. Lucky to live in Canada, I don't think I've ever had to hide the fact. I was recently diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer. While Christopher disliked those of us from Yorkshire, I am proud to share his views of whatever future any of us share. My trust - my "faith" is in the hands of the doctors and scientists rather than some magical cloud shaman. Now I think it is time to partay!!!

    So this is what you can muster against a man who went unprotected to every danger spot in the world, every "axis of evil" nation. A man who courageously defended the helpless around the world with stinging, resounding, brilliant journalism, a man who went to the very moment of death believing completely in the beauty and brilliance of humanity. Your words define you precisely.
