    I bought my 425 brand new in 1993. I still love it.

      @@FloridaDeere - It sure was the first year. Kerr Mower in Pineville NC convinced me not to buy the 318 that they had on the floor but to wait for the first 425 that they had coming into the showroom about three weeks later. It is an awesome little tractor. Just around 550 hours on it in 30 years.

      @@BrittCHelmsSr As good as the 318 was, having pedal hydro and all the other features of the 4X5 series, you made a great choice I think, surely you know as you still have the same tractor. Awesome.

    Good job. I'm seriously considering my next tractor will be a 425. I might be reluctant as it would require a completely different set of attachments which are very expensive and somewhat hard to find. A comment about your discussion of available attachments is that every one of the attachments you mention is available with older models so there's nothing new there. Just different. I personally don't consider the mower driveshaft to be an enhancement over belt driven. It soaks up a lot of power and just too many extra unneeded parts to wear out. (And they do). It's nice you included a video of the four-wheel steer. I've always wondered if there is real value in having that. One thing I was impressed with the 420 was its tight turning radius vs. the 300 series. It would easily turn inside the circle of a 317 even though it's a much larger tractor. One thing I'm not clear about is if the four-wheel steer can be disabled. Maybe you can answer that. Thanks for the very good video.Well done.

      Nope the AWS is all time, you'll see underneath, I did a poor job of highlighting that, but it's completely connected to the front steering as well as one unit. As a mower and for it's ability to park in tight spaces, it's super great, you'd love it. It does take a little getting used to as it sort of throws you around, but that's just because the turn radius is so tight. The attachments types are available on the older models, yet differnet models of course, but the big step up was the 540pto, that is IMO a huge step up from the 2000pto available on earlier models. I am definitely sold on shaft-driven decks. I don't think the belt-driven as bad at all, I just think that shaft-driven are more "set and forget". Yep they need maintenance and parts are likely a little pricer, but repair and maintenance is few and far between. And I love my 1023E auto connect deck and shaft, smooth and super easy. I fight the 322's every time I put a deck on, deck, than the draft arm, than the mule drive, what a pain. Obvisiously newer models are much simplier. If your budget allows, I'd consider the 445 and 455 as well. The 445 is EFI, but pretty reliable and the extra 2hp does help with engaging the 60" deck should you find one of those. I agree the 420 is a beast and yet still turns like a champ. I had one once with a replacement engine and then sold it too quickly and wished I hadn't. Funny thing, I couldn't figure out why it had a p220 in a 1983 420, finally Kyle (Mrrbeef) helped me out and he figured it out that it was a 1996 replacement engine. Thanks for watching Joe, I wish you luck on that search for a good machine.

      Yeah, they are great, I recently picked up a 455 AWS to be my yard mule for mowing and other such things. It's great too, the only problem is you can swing yourself around pretty good on it, so you have to get your balance down just right. Thanks for watching.

    Nice video. Loader not recommended on 425 all wheel steer. Also my 425 has no problem running a 60 inch deck-- even in high grass.

    • @FloridaDeere
      @FloridaDeere  Рік тому

      You are correct about the AWS, in fact, if I'm not mistaken, you actually have to modify the loader to fit a AWS, any of them 425-455, but not recommended anyway due to stability issues for sure. And the issue with the 60" deck is start up power. Kyle with the Mrrbeef UA-cam channel did a video on it, took 13 times before he could get the 60 engaged. I've also seen others remark about it, but as your experience shows, they can work and of course Deere did sell them on the 425, so... Thanks for watching.

      My 60" 425 aws needs near full throttle to start deck without stalling. It doesn't drop off much in rpm's and cuts with plenty of power. Just one of the quirks of the machine. @@FloridaDeere

    • @FloridaDeere
      @FloridaDeere  8 місяців тому

      @@horsemany Yep, it's not surprising. Oddly enough, my 455 can start with the deck engaged already. Now to be fair it's only the 54" but still. And when I say start, I mean idle and PTO is on at crank up. I only know this because the PTO solenoid was screwed up and it was constantly engaged until I switched out the solenoid. All these tractors (4X5 series) are great L&G's, in my opinion the best ones they made. Thanks for watching

    I had an x300 that lasted 750 hours. I could put it Back together though. I have an LA150 it had a 44 cubic inch briggs then at 550 hours it failed I put a 40 cubic inch briggs and it is doing well. I would like to get a 425 John Deere it is a heavier buit tractor than the LA150 and the X300 Some box store John Deeres arent the John Deeres you would expect to be good quality machines from a Dealer although the box store units can be sold at the dealers also. Cub Cadet Simplicity Also made heavy duty garden tractors the Cub Cadet xt2 Is a heavier duty mower than a XT1. The 782 882 models are very reliable from what ive heard ive heard the same for the Simplicity sunstar models as well. The old 90s and early 2000s Craftsmans are good also cant say the same about the new craftsman tractors.

    If the deck is shaft driven like the 420/430 its not "shaft driven off the engine". The engine drives the front pto via BELT to the shaft, to the gearbox to another belt. So you still have two sets of belts between the crank and deck.

    Somebody near me is selling his John Deere 425 for $2,000. After watching his video it seems like it might be worth it. A new S160 is like $3,200, but I don't think its capable of doing all this.

    Mine is identical to that: aws, 54" deck, 3pt, and pto. It's been a good one; bought new in 1995, still mow and plow snow every year. Question: I keep hearing/reading about the steel cam. What's in it now and how catastrophic is a failure. I have 875 hours, always parked inside. Thanks.

    • @MrThomasfouraker
      @MrThomasfouraker 2 роки тому +2

      Yours being a 95 will have the plastic cam gear. Failure isn't catastrophic typically but it could bend valves and interfere with the pistons. Its the gear on the cam that's plastic and when that breaks it no longer spins "in time" with the crankshaft its driven by so the critical valve timing in correlation to the piston position is off which could cause them to collide. Its definitely a repair I believe to be worthwhile if you can carve out a day or two to do it. The repair isn't very difficult but does require pulling the motor and removing the front case housing. Its less difficult if you are doing it proactively and don't have to fish 100s of small plastic cam gear pieces from out of the case. Its good practice to also replace the plastic governor gear too. While less frequent, they can also grenade and since you're in there its most prudent to do so for little further expense.

    • @FloridaDeere
      @FloridaDeere  2 роки тому +1

      @@MrThomasfouraker Definitely what Thomas said. The change was made sometime in the 1998 model year, but allegedly they are good for around 1000 hours, but being pro-active certainly helps your situation. I think the kit is about $200-300 if I'm not msitaken.

      @Georgiagreen317 2 роки тому +2

      @@FloridaDeere You can't blame Deere for that one. I doubt if they had any idea what was in those engines when they chose them. Plastic cam gears are not at all unusual. Many auto engines use them mainly to cut down gear or chain noise. Should I decide to jump to this model or any Kawi, if not already done it's the first thing I'll do. I saw a 425 offered for $7000. I skipped right passed that one. Could it be?

      Are you talking about the fat but flat one that has a flip up handle to rotate it? It's a little offset to the left as you sit on the tractor? If so, that is the deck height adjustment knob. You need to have the hydraulics all the way, then adust it up or down, once adjusted, you can operate the hydraulic lever and check height. If you adjust again, make sure you raise th deck all the way up again. I hope that is the issue, if not, let me know. Thanks for watching.

    • @FloridaDeere
      @FloridaDeere  Рік тому +3

      Eric, what you have to understand is they sell larger engines because dudes think they need it. It's all marketing for guys, like they do for women when they say that clothes are 40% off. When are they not?🤣 My 1023E, one step larger than a X700 series, has a 22hp 3 cylinder 1.0L diesel in it. I can tell you in no way is it underpowered. The X350 and S130 need no where even close to 22hp to do their small and simple jobs. But high hp ratings sell, especially when one manufacturer says theirs in more pwoerful than the next guys. Trust me, these tractors could get along all day long with 15-17 hp engines. That 425 is three times the tractor a X350 and abouto five times what a S130 is. Hp is hardly a factor in modern day tractor calculations.
