Random thought: I feel like the weeping angels would’ve been the perfect villain for pertwee. He can’t do the Venusian aikido on them and he can’t talk to them about morality and justice. He would simply have to run and get out of his comfort zone where all his abilities would be almost useless. So if there’s an audio out there with pertwee and angels, sign me up! I also think the midnight entity would work so well for Troughton, and the beast for Eccleston. I’m just rambling because I don’t know too much about audios but I know they like blending a lot of who characters, villains, arcs together.
@@jadeskywalker06 Big Finish is great and honestly some of the best characterwork you get out of actors who were limited by script and screen you'll find *for* characters like the 3rd Doctor and *especially* the 5th Doctor and his companions. Big Finish contains some of the best doctor who ever written. People who dont like it either lack imagination and so cant adapt to the audio format, or they havent heard it
0:18 - what is the point of watching a doctor who channel if all they do is go over the stuff you've seen a million times like isn't half of the point of being part of a fan community the fact that you hear about new facets of the thing you like???
I don’t know a lot about big finish but I am getting into it now the telly show is failing. I have to admit I am out of my depth. Your tips on Spotify was fantastic, the fan made one is brilliant which you recommended too. However I have no idea what I’m doing or where it fits in. They are monsterous (some stories are over 3 hours!) and without some guidance, I would be lost
If you want a funny short story look up Mystery of the Haunted Cottage written by Derek Landy- one of my favourite authors. Its a collection of written stories released for the 50th, on for each of the current doctors at the time. This is the 10th Doctor one and it's a sort of sequel to the mind robber.
Hey, do you think you could do a little retrospective on the Nest Cottage Chronicles? It's such an odd little moment in the history of Who audio. With the BBC using the Fourth Doctor to seemingly compete with Big Finish, Mike Yates as primary companion and the Doctor just living in a regular old house for a while. It's all very weird and I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on it.
I couldn't get through Volume 1 and gave up on the concept of an impersonation version of Pertwee's Doctor, but your story scores of 2/10 and 1/10 make me wonder if I should give the others a try.
Barry Letts was a big fan of Jeremy. In one of his books, the one where Jeremy joins a cult, the wanker complains about not getting his reward, when said reward was being eaten by the monsters. In a book creatively titled Island of Death you want him to get eaten.
To anyone who claims Big Finish is ridiculous: Go now! Let nothing stand in your way! You do not have enough time left on this Earth, to fully appreciate Big Finish!
The line between distasteful and respectful doesn't depend on how much the impressionist sounds like the person. It's all to do with the context in which the replacement is used. Hurndall's was a one-off performance to allow a one-off 20th anniversary to go ahead and in a way pay tribute to the first doctor during those celebrations. Bradley playing Hartnell in a biopic is fine too (again for the anniversary, as a tribute to the man/people who starred it all). When Big Finish started using soundalikes (the companion chronicles don't count - that's just reading an audiobook) it was to allow a certain story to be told or have an ensemble who was mostly living have some involvement in their range. This is not something I agree with, but in those BF stories I at least understood it was the exception rather than the rule. They even claim when folk like Paul Darrow died, that he would NOT be recast. This is where their logic falls apart...why do that for some people then happily recast others? It feels like a total lack of respect for how unique those actors were. They try to again justify it by saying "oh well this is Lis Sladen's daughter playing her, and Caroline John's daughter playing her" as if that is meant to make it a sweet family tribute, but then they put them alongside some random bloke playing Harry Sullivan. Over time they've obviously changed their minds and just dont give a fuck about the original actors. This makes them no better than fan audios with people pretending to be the doctors and companions, and to be honest, the reason I got in to BF back in 1999 was because it WAS the original actors reprising their roles. I mean, they don't just have Jon Culshaw doing the Brig to allow 3rd Doctor stories, they're now putting him in ti 7th and 4th Dr. stories - how is that a necessary move? Although I have to admit, part of this is just laziness on BF's part, as once they get an actor in their repertoire they use them on anything and every release they have. Dan Starkey and Jon Culshaw seem to be in everything (I'm wondering how long it will be after Tom Baker passes away that they'll announce the Jon Culshaw range?) Added to all this is, no matter how similar you might think they sound there are others who just hear the impressionist. I'm a big fan of voice actors on radio and animation and although they're playing a part I can tell who the actor is, and Jon Culshaw always sounds like Jon Culshaw putting on a voice (again, it just feels like amateurish fan level stuff). I'm pretty good at impressions and so is a friend of mine, but I don't want to hear an official Dr Who audio with him in it.
I feel like the issue with a lot of the Third Doctor Adventures is the pandering towards nostalgia, something especially evident in the first box set. I love the acting in the range, and think Treloar is dead on fantastic, but it feels like the range only really hit its stride with Volume 7 - 'The Unzal Incursion' felt like it was going for a more traditional Pertwee vibe, but 'The Gulf'... My word its phenomenal!
Thanks to modern editing techniques, we can use existing footage to complete the film without Milhouse...I mean Pertwee! It's like watching Sesame Street nowadays, Big Bird has a completely different voice now! 7:05 The Doctor Who/Phantom of the Paradise crossover we've all been DYING to see!...oh wait
6:10 I take great offence to the use of the 42 here. He was in the middle of being take over in that scene and then cured if I'm remembering correctly. That is a *good* use of the trope, busta.
Oh yeah also... Please kindly make more of these. I know I shouldn't get all my listening suggestions from one source, especially from a self described "NO FUN" fan, but, I don't wanna bother my brother about this, man.
It’s a shame you never reviewed the big finish 20th anniversary box set. It’d be good to hear you do a review of one specific doctor who’s story rather than a list. But hey it’s your channel and I love the vid. Question though: what are your top 10 episodes of Doctor Who? Or just new who I’m not sure which era you prefer but it’s something I’ve been thinking about a lot for myself and I’d love to know what yours are.
I couldn’t bring myself to pay attention to a Counter Measures story. My opinions just weren’t very interesting on the set, as the 3/Jo and 8/River/Benny stories were the only interesting ones bar some cameos in the final story.
AWOL, the third doctor short story w/ the Brig Might be like... my fav 3rd doc story. Just because those stubborn fools finally talk about their feelings like they should and it just fcvgb MAKES ME SOB
So big finish are having a 50% off sale on short trips and seeing as they’re supposed to be some of the best doctor who material I’m wondering if you could recommend any before it ends tomorrow.
DAVIS do you know if time tunnel is any good because I think it sounds interesting but I don’t want to waste my two big finish stores every two weeks on something that may only be mediocre.
Hey, Sam given 12 is your favourite Doctor (along with a few others) how do you want his audio adventures to go if either Capaldi decided to do it or they got an impressionist? Personally, I hope they go the Eighth/Sixth Doctor approach of taking him in a new direction as opposed to going for nostalgia.
They have Jacob Dudman on Capaldi duty! Which is something I’m pretty against! Fan audios have many good 12 impressionists, but 12 is just about the only Doctor Dudman can’t do IMO. I’d wait for Capaldi or nothing preferably. I don’t mind what they do with him as his era (and comics) have so little consistency.
@@SamyulDavis Which companions do you think he'd be best paired with in audio? I would quite like to have more adventures with Bill and Nardole AND Missy. We only really saw all four of them together for a couple of adventures and the finale is S10.
Ben Warburton no companions! Nardole at a stretch. Loads of the comics and novels are kinda during the post-Clara era. You can do anything with 12 without really worrying about continuity as he travelled alone even in S8.
@@SamyulDavis 12 on his own could be good, I'd like to see him post Kill the Moon before Orient Express. Doesn't 12 also have a companion in the comics who plays guitar? I think Big Finish have already adapted some stuff from 4th Doctor comics.

The first 30 seconds of this video is a great intro.
6:56 on the cover is the phantom of the paradise for some reason
Hahaha i recognise that background music, after all i use some of the same tracks :)
You nailed it when you said that *I* don't think Tim Treloar sounds anything like Pertwee
How on, that storm of the horrorfax on. Look at the cover art, it isn't that the phantom of the paradise guy?
You should absolutely continue to ignore people telling you to stop talking about Big Finish. 😀
What about the Companion Chronicles?
0:15 Noone? Me, and my friends: HA
Ghosts of N space is hilarious and I will never be convinced otherwise.
Hello Davis BigFinish stories are great stories thank you for sharing the best
I like the audio recommendations !
If you want a funny short story look up Mystery of the Haunted Cottage written by Derek Landy- one of my favourite authors. Its a collection of written stories released for the 50th, on for each of the current doctors at the time. This is the 10th Doctor one and it's a sort of sequel to the mind robber.
I love big finish even though I haven’t heard a single story I love videos on them explaining their wacky weirdness
I fell asleep during Vengence of the Stones.
Haven't heard Volume 1 myself, but I can assure you the range overall is utterly brilliant and so faithful to the era
@@alternatethirteenth5594 THANK YOU! So weird to see hate for this range!
Tv fans: sIx iS tHe WoRsT dOcToR!!!
Big finish fans: *VILLAIN! MUUUURDERERR!!!*
Barry Letts was a big fan of Jeremy. In one of his books, the one where Jeremy joins a cult, the wanker complains about not getting his reward, when said reward was being eaten by the monsters. In a book creatively titled Island of Death you want him to get eaten.
To anyone who claims Big Finish is ridiculous:
Go now!
Let nothing stand in your way!
You do not have enough time left on this Earth, to fully appreciate Big Finish!
God I love your doctor who videos
May I Just Say, Tim Treloar Even Kind Of Looks Like Pertwee. I Think It's The Nose
Awesome thanks man I’m going to check this out ☺️
I have tried The Ghosts of N-Space 3 times. Could never get past the first episode.
No more full production 1-3 stories then! That's a shame.
No review for The Scorchies?
Rise of the new humans was great
Mike Yates one trip? What about Speed of Flight?
Thanks to modern editing techniques, we can use existing footage to complete the film without Milhouse...I mean Pertwee! It's like watching Sesame Street nowadays, Big Bird has a completely different voice now!
7:05 The Doctor Who/Phantom of the Paradise crossover we've all been DYING to see!...oh wait
6:10
I take great offence to the use of the 42 here.
I was just struggling to find visual examples, but 42 isn't even really that trope. Definitely a leap.
You should make a video about fanmade stuff, mainly audio.
7:03 wait Phantom of the Paradise?!
AWOL, the third doctor short story w/ the Brig Might be like... my fav 3rd doc story. Just because those stubborn fools finally talk about their feelings like they should and it just fcvgb MAKES ME SOB
What are third doctors best comedic stories? I know the actor had excelent comedic timing and doctor who does both sci-fi comedy and sci-fi drama.
So big finish are having a 50% off sale on short trips and seeing as they’re supposed to be some of the best doctor who material I’m wondering if you could recommend any before it ends tomorrow.
The short trips volumes are all very good. Most of the good ones are hiding in there. Volume 2 is my first suggestion.
DAVIS do you know if time tunnel is any good because I think it sounds interesting but I don’t want to waste my two big finish stores every two weeks on something that may only be mediocre.
Fraser James Unsure, try out The Time Scales on reliable ratings for the niche stuff.
6:58 UH HEY WINSLOW HOW YA DOIN PHENIOX TREATIN YA WELL
I know I'm four years late, but you should listen to Kaliedoscope.
I would also say that tom baker is a wild ride on big finish 😀
Have you seen the Sarah Jane Adventures?
Check out my video on it!
Have you ever thought to review fan audios like you do with Black Glove Studios’ Final Game
Pete Walsh is The 9th Doctor
Sorry, *I just left the monster setting on.*
@@SamyulDavis I agree, I've never heard a good 12th doctor impression. I think the closest is Chris-Walker Thomson's impression but even that is only passable.
What about the Lost Story, the Mega?
Even this one, Davis?
I love BF.
Which is the correct way to point the 4th doctors sonic?
You rock Even when I don't fully agree, but that's OK and how things ought to be :D (Here I agree with you - Also check out Black Glove Studio's Third Doctor audio 'The Final Game')
No companion chronicles? Or will that be a separate video?
I was naughty and tried to skip them
I’m sure ill return one day though. Getting someone to marathon every Short Trip and Companion Chronicle is a scary, daunting task- and it didn’t feel right skimming through them like the short trips :)
DAVIS fair point, there's a bunch I still need to listen to.
Why don't big finish use AI to reproduce the voice of Jon Pertwee.
Please do Jago and Litefoot
What kinda uncultured and boring person says “I don’t care about Big Finish”
Big Fellas, Big Finish is one of the big reasons Doctor Who is still alive. We got some of the best stories because of Big Finish, just to name a few Spare Parts, The Chimes of Midnight, Jubilee (the story that inspired Dalek, not only the best ninth doctor story but the best episode in general)
I’m flabbergasted that anyone would speak heresy.
