- Screw shoe goo. Yuck. Materials in depth listed below.
Here's what I use in detail, read these instructions! Trust this more than the video, also be aware ripping off the sole can go either way, so be careful and maybe experiment with some old shoes first!!!!!
If you rip off the sole make sure there's something under it, most skate shoes the bottom IS also the sole. With most skate shoes I'de just recommend gluing on top of the sole. Although it might be heavier.
Important thing to keep in mind is make sure to shoe goo the edges of the velcro so it won't peel off and SAND the surface for better adhesion. Shoe goo struggles to stay stuck to new or smooth vulcanized rubber, which is why shoe goo-ing to the foam on the bottom of indoor soccer shoes or running shoes is more effective generally.
You can cut SBR rubber to size pretty easily with some high quality scissors or shears.
FINALLY, make sure to heat up the soles (30 sec in the microwave for example, or in warming mode on the oven). That lets the adhesive on the Velcro properly adhere to the soles.
SBR Rubber GUIDE:
3/8" Way to thick to push with, so HEAVY. BUT if you wanna take a friend down a really huge mountain who can't slide (1+ miles) you can SWAP this sole out at the top for the downhill if you keep it in a bag or your pocket and it'll last forever.
rubber sizes:
0.25" / 6.35mm for exceptionally foot braky downhill & freeride, pretty chonky
0.18" / 5mm for most purposes, minor foot braking, favorite!!!
0.125" 3mm dancing, casual use, too thin for foot braking

Hi mate, would 65a be a bit too soft?
Always love "cooking" videos 😁🍕 and geat idea & instructions!
Great idea/ Seems like you should ride the stock shoe until you are just about to wear through the sole and then do this ^^^ mod to get max benefit. Throwing out the stock sole is a waste. I'll definitely give this a shot when my current LDP shoes are close to worn out. Thanks.
Wild! I had no idea this was possible! Definitely gonna give this a try.
This is great Adam, Spent years glueing throw down rubber soles on the heal of my VFF, Freaking velcro! Brilliant!!!
Just a casual little 13 mile downhill in a hurricane, nbd
Awesome idea and execution! I am gonna try this!
This is brilliant! I’ve used very similar rubber, but with barge glue, so it was very much a one-time application. Very cool to hear about the Velcro.
Came for the great idea, stayed for the jokes
Really great video man, this is super helpful
Very good video!
hope you just started a new shoe movement in general! great idea.
also wonder if the 3m duallock velcro type would be better?, also this idea would also be great for roller-skates
I used to use zip ties as shoe laces. They did pretty good
Awesome & Thanks :)
Yo! Just got linked here from the longboarding subreddit. Love this idea. Question: I only do ldp and my Rogers are near death. Thinking on grabbing some SBR from the site you linked and just attaching directly to the sole as I like the extra cushion. What thickness do you think?
Doesn't the non-adhesive back hook and loop come with both the hook and loop sides? Why can't you just Shoe Gloo strips of the hook side to the SBR instead of buying 1in adhesive backed strips?
Shoe goo really hates sticking to smooth surfaces, and it's really stank. And relatively expensive and dries up. So having the adhesive stuff on hand ends up easier and less messy.
Genius
What is the exact measurement of the rubber roll you bought? I see they have many options
If you can't stop on a board going 50mph without ruining the sole you should probably do some more leg exercises 😅 not saying it's possible to runout everytime but I reccomend doing it as much as possible because that will teach you alot about handling momentum instead of just wasting it on friction, that's why I never break a bone when I fall 😅 but this might be a nice idea for somebody interested to dominate the longboard footwear market in a non scripted obsolescence fashion
go one step further and use an old tire.
Tires are really heavy and hard to cut with the puncture belt, would not recommend for skating. Free brake soles would be a good alternative if you wanted tread.
