Honestly I love how the Emperor has been turned into basically a physical anchor for a shattered god glued together by millions upon millions of screaming souls. I imagine each fragment of his soul has been allowed to develop its own opinions over the past ten millennia hence why Guilliman’s return prompts such a cacophony of responses. Then the greatest fragment coalesces them to provide a coherent response before once again breaking.

IIRC there's one where Horus wins,realizes he was cheated out of freedom by the dark gods and destroys the galaxy to also destroy the dark gods, and one where the Emperor wins a full victory but his plan still doesn't work. That said, the warp is the same to all the Games Workshop universes (warhammer fantasy, warhammer 40k, Chainsaw Man, etcetera) so maybe it is the alternate Emperor (or maybe it's the old canon that big E was actually a bunch of psyker souls fused into one, and "death" may have dislodged them...or added to them)

His final message to Guilliman is described as not the final, but almost the final burst of energy from the *thing* on the throne. He probably spends most of his energy just trying to stay above the surface of that enormous sea of insanity to power the astronomicon.

I love the way the Emperor sounds. Like he's multiple people fighting at once for the chance to talk and a damaged machine struggling to process a response. Its really well done, really creepy. I've replayed that bit 5 times just to listen to how some of the words drag. The Guilliman voice is exceptional too!

The point of what I'm saying is that the Big Smurf woke up to pretty much one of the darkest scenarios he could have imagined and realised that it's reality now. And then still carried hope, will and went to put in the work to fix things no matter how gargantuan the task. It's absolutely admirable. What hits hard is the weight of his statement on the current state of humanity.
And the version in the video is pretty tamed compared to how it is described in the book, here the words are made to be understandable, normaly they all come at once with visions of things so old and horrible Guilliman doesn't believe they exist. The Emperor is a lovecraftian eldritch god at this point.

_F**k_ that was beautiful. Honestly the strange eldritch creature the Emperor has become is one of the things that I think makes 40k the incredible dystopian setting that it is. When he walked among men, the human race was well on its way to rebuilding the utopia of the Men of Gold, only for it all to come crumbling to ruin thanks to the machinations of Chaos. Now we are left with a Lovecraftian horror as savior of mankind, and I find that mesmerizing somehow.
Well it's _HIGHLY_ debatable if the Emperor could have actually achieved that. Especially since it's been revealed through visions of multiple timelines that this canon timeline is unironically the best one. In the most notable visions Horus realizes the Chaos Gods used him and destroys the Galaxy in an attempt to destroy both The Warp and the Chaos Gods with it. While in the scenario that the Emperor does not hold back and just annihilates Horus without mercy. He still ultimately fails his goal. The truth is that despite the Emperor's intentions he is actually the one that is holding back the Imperium. I think that as long as the Emperor of Mankind exists and the Imperium continues to depend on him. Humanity will never return to what it once was during the Dark Age of Technology.

As much as I enjoy the sheer grimdarkness of Guilliman's little monologue, it's the paragraph that follows that embodies what I love about this setting. He overcomes his personal despair, reminds himself that there is still hope. Humanity may be on the verge of collapse in a degraded and backwards state compared to what they once were, but I didn't hear no bell.
That dragged out "Guilliman" was probably the most heartbreaking line to cap everything else off. It somehow sounds like a parent patiently chiding their child. The whole thing is such a rollercoaster. "Lord of Ultramar" --- an Emperor speaking to his subject "My last hope" --- a proud leader knowing he addresses a hero of his realm "My last tool" --- a leader with the mask removed. Everything reduced to power and tools to power "My son" --- a father trying to comfort his boy "Saviour" --- a religiously-charged term spat out by a fanatical atheist who couldn't find an alternative "Hope" --- a man crying out for help "Thirteen" --- a scientist, recalling the number he assigned to this particular experiment "Failure" --- a pot trying to talk to the kettle "Thief" --- a paranoid ruler who assumed the worst about Imperium Secundus "Betrayer" --- same as the one above "Liar" --- same as above "Guilliman" --- the patient tones of a parent trying to chide their child "Lord of Ultramar" --- all the pains between childhood and the present day, recapped
I love it showing just how fragmented and distorted the Emperor is and fuck is it terrifying. Imagine your son, your greatest general betrays you then leads a crusade against everything you built in the service of gods that you know will damn all of humanity. Your son is winning, the traitors are winning, they are at your doorstep and you must act. Your mortally wounded and must kill your son while he is brought out of his corrupted mind and he begs you to destroy him, not kill, destroy where there will be nothing left. So you grant your son, the general, the warmaster, the traitor, the puppet and finally the son’s last wish. You are then placed upon one of your finest achievements and it is to be your tomb, on top you will watch your empire fall into maddening delusion and despair, you are powerless and incapable of any action. You are forced for 10,000 years to stare into your failure, to add insult to injury you have been fed sacrifices and are worshipped as a god, you have become the very monster you wanted to destroy and now it appears as though the only way forward is to accept ascension and lose everything you were. The Emperor is fucking tragic and outright horrifying when you think about it
Can’t get over how well the emperors husk of a being is portrayed in this. The low groans and droning voice is both unsettling and heartbreaking to hear. It’s like a senile relative remembering who they were for a heartbeat before returning to madness.

I gave everything I had to you, to them. Look what they’ve made of our dream. This bloated, rotting carcass of an empire is driven not by reason and hope but by fear, hate and ignorance. Better that we had all burned in the fires of Horus’ ambition than live to see this.’ Even as he said it, Guilliman heard the lie in his words. Amongst his brothers, none had been more idealistic than Roboute Guilliman. None had envisioned a brighter future, not just for Mankind but also for the warriors of the Legiones Astartes. That flame of hope had been a part of him for as long as he had lived. Even now, as it was smothered by darkness and woe, Guilliman realized that his flame endured. ‘There’s hope still,’ he told himself, turning back to the window and placing one armoured palm against it. He stared out at the work gangs, labouring to repair the damage of war, and the Ultramarines stood proud and determined upon the ramparts. They had been born into this dark millennium, and had known nothing but the hardship, suffering and despair of unending conflict. Sometimes the fans are right and what theyre asking would have been better than the half-cooked nonsense a bunch of sub-par hacks think up, which is subsequently slapped with the official stamp so that people who just mindlessly consume things with the 40k label will then pretend is not horrible.
The emperor being fully sentient on the Throne is still to me one of the darkest moments of all sci-fi. Remember: The Emperor has suffered the worst fate of anyone in 40k.
Simply put, in W40K universe, there is a species of superhuman with psychic ability called Psyker. The "Emperor", the number one MVP of mankind, is the strongest psyker that ever exist. Fast forward, the Emperor "sacrifice" himself to aid humanity's progress by using his psychic power to fuel up "the Warp", a W40K version of light-speed travel. Since the Emperor is, well, still human, he obviously can't go on forever, and his followers built him the Golden Throne, a throne-shaped life support system to keep the Emperor's biological body alive for as long as possible. Of course, this Golden Throne is not flawless, and the Emperor is, at the end, still human. A few millenia has passed, and his body gradually decayed until it's just skin and bones. But the Emperor's consciousness still remains, all this years, all this millenias, the Emperor sitting in the Golden Throne, still sentient, still thinking, and fully aware, despite his decaying body.
I know you tried to explain this to him but you did it wrong. Presumably Humanity built the throne during the DAoT _(Dark Age of Technology)._ It was not built specifically for the Emperor. It's preserved technology that is so advanced no one else knows how it was even created. Not even the Eldar know how it works. If humanity had built it for him then where would he no urgency in the fact that it's currently failing and will very soon stop working. The entire point of the Imperium in 40k is that they are the remnants of a dystopian past. A past that was so technologically advanced that they were almost on par with the Eldar post War in Heaven. Humanity in its current state does not have the knowledge to create new technology. They can only poorly maintain it and use fragmented blueprints from the Dark Age of Technology.

I love how this captures the tragedy of the Emperors godlike yet demented state: canonically those words are not said in a descending order, as if some are true and others not - all of them, every single thing He thinks of Guilimann was "said" at the same time, both the faithful son and the tool, both a failiure and His greatest triumph, all of them, simultaneous and true And not only of Guilliman, of Himself as well, moreso in fact "Father-Not a father-Thing-Thing-Thing-Apotheosis"
I mean considering what the state of The Emperor poetically/thematically matches the state of The Imperium...I'd say it's accurate. Also further proved that Uriah was and still remains correct.

So instead of y'know, teaching the dangers of The Warp, and using his powers and knowledge to bolster his people's defenses against it or even tried to reclaim it...decided it was better to lie to everyone and say it didn't exist. Especially when the Chaos Gods were absolutely at play and not content with letting his plans go down. Did he expect that lie to last forever? Or that when he did tell the truth of the matter, people would he okay with what he did? Seriously, for all the faults of the likes of Horus, Magnus, and the others...the Emperor has his own lion share of the blame for how it all happened.

TTS really did a number on the fanbase's perception of the Emperor (and the Primarchs). Its baffling to me that people expected anything other than what we got. The Corpse Emperor is as much a factual statement as it is an insult. Personal Fan Theory, the Emperor and Malal are one and the same. The Emperor is called Anathema by Chaos, and the victory of Malal would be the death of the other Chaos gods. There is of course the shared skull imagery, and to draw irl comparisons, Odin the Allfather is also the god of death. The Emperors ultimate plan was to move Humanity to the Webway and eradicate all life in the galaxy, killing the Chaos gods.

Much of the post Heresy order was designed by Guilliman, so yeah, he has his responsibility and he drastically weakened the Imperium. On the other hand, the fact that the Imperium still exists and the machinery of that post heresy order is still running despite it having been 10k years shows it wasn't as bad as it seems. But that is separate from breaking up the Legions which was a pretty poor move in hindsight and only served to make the Imperium weaker.
Ηonestly, I am mostly referring to all the shit they pulled during the great Crusade. Like all the ge/xenocide, slavery, awful living conditions, purging of anyone that has different views, servitors, over reliance on the Ad Mech, culture of blind loyalty to your superiors and ignorance did not pop up due to religion or Horus turning traitor. They popped up because Big E and The Primarchs spend hundreds of years enforcing such policies upon the populace.
The emperor really being like the master from the first fallout game especially when he constantly speak like a legion of souls all struggles to come in harmony.
Wow nice ref, makes sense. They're actually very similar characters in their idealism and plans, even if they had opposing goals. And both fell down because of seemingly cracks in the Great Plan. They are also both possessed of Numen and therefore gods. Both even managed to get cults working for them through claims of godhood. Both were turned into gods against their wills, but The Master accepted his role as a god willingly.

Honestly, that interaction was perfect. The Emperor and the Imperium of Man was always meant to be horrific *gim dark* satire. What The Emperor set out to do and what the Imperium had become are at opposite ends. The Emperor set out to form a human empire that would be strong, progressive, and secular. Guilliman essentially did that with the Worlds of Ultramar. Guilliman waking up to see a sprawling, rotting carcass of an Imperium that is regressive and fanatical is like a neverending nightmare. I was very concerned that Guilliman would be a walking mary sue, since that's how capable Primarchs are. Instead, Guilliman is shown to be desperately holding on to hope in a galaxy awash in despair. Darkness pushing against him in all directions. It's all he can do to keep the Imperium's head above water. The 10th edition launch trailer was so good and communicating that, too. I love that trailer.
It is bit sad that Emperor never in canon loved his "sons". Only deeming them most effective tools to embody the "best" aspects of warfare/humanity/himself.

The thing is before that and when they started to delve in it, canon always portrayed Emperor as a bad father, but it was simply because he was losing his grasp on his own mortality, humanity and empathy. That is why he even created Custodes to be essentially his companions, guards, and confidants. He wasn't bad father because he intentionally treated them bad, but because he was, essentially, socially inept in normal interactions and couldn't empathize, understand or comfort his sons despite his best efforts. Hence the tragedy of it all. Then lately there is a LOT of writers that are just writing him as psycho who only saw others as tools. Especially authors who don't hide the fact Chaos is their puppy faction...

He's lost touch with his humanity due to his age and godlike power, as well as his desperation to avert the worst possible future. This is his critical flaw, this is why his plans fail. This is directly called out as the main reason why he failed to connect with some of the Primarchs, which led them to fall to corruption in the end, but with others like Horus he did indeed come to see him as like a son. Many souls have merged with the emperor to keep him alive, i like to imagine that those words were not directed to guilliman but instead the emperor himself. They are part of him. They know the things he has done, the mistakes he did. A lot of people were fed to him against their will, and people did not know his state before being fed to him. I too would be pretty angry when the only thing keeping me sane in that grim universe , my role model , my god , is nothing but a corpse sustained by consuming the very thing he should have protected.

Honestly I love how the Emperor has been turned into basically a physical anchor for a shattered god glued together by millions upon millions of screaming souls. I imagine each fragment of his soul has been allowed to develop its own opinions over the past ten millennia hence why Guilliman’s return prompts such a cacophony of responses. Then the greatest fragment coalesces them to provide a coherent response before once again breaking.
I think it's not just all the shattered souls, but every possible reality. Everything basically.

IIRC there's one where Horus wins,realizes he was cheated out of freedom by the dark gods and destroys the galaxy to also destroy the dark gods, and one where the Emperor wins a full victory but his plan still doesn't work.
That said, the warp is the same to all the Games Workshop universes (warhammer fantasy, warhammer 40k, Chainsaw Man, etcetera) so maybe it is the alternate Emperor (or maybe it's the old canon that big E was actually a bunch of psyker souls fused into one, and "death" may have dislodged them...or added to them)

His final message to Guilliman is described as not the final, but almost the final burst of energy from the *thing* on the throne. He’s just become this endless knotted mess of soul fragments and psyker souls (approximately 3.6 *billion* of them) that cannot even begin to function coherently. He probably spends most of his energy just trying to stay above the surface of that enormous sea of insanity to power the astronomicon.

I love the way the Emperor sounds. Like he's multiple people fighting at once for the chance to talk and a damaged machine struggling to process a response. Its really well done, really creepy. I've replayed that bit 5 times just to listen to how some of the words drag. The Guilliman voice is exceptional too!

Honestly the strange eldritch creature the Emperor has become is one of the things that I think makes 40k the incredible dystopian setting that it is.
When he walked among men, the human race was well on its way to rebuilding the utopia of the Men of Gold, only for it all to come crumbling to ruin thanks to the machinations of Chaos.
Now we are left with a Lovecraftian horror as savior of mankind, and I find that mesmerizing somehow.
Well it's _HIGHLY_ debatable if the Emperor could have actually achieved that. Especially since it's been revealed through visions of multiple timelines that this canon timeline is unironically the best one. In the most notable visions Horus realizes the Chaos Gods used him and destroys the Galaxy in an attempt to destroy both The Warp and the Chaos Gods with it. While in the scenario that the Emperor does not hold back and just annihilates Horus without mercy. He still ultimately fails his goal. The truth is that despite the Emperor's intentions he is actually the one that is holding back the Imperium. I think that as long as the Emperor of Mankind exists and the Imperium continues to depend on him. Humanity will never return to what it once was during the Dark Age of Technology.

As much as I enjoy the sheer grimdarkness of Guilliman's little monologue, it's the paragraph that follows that embodies what I love about this setting. He overcomes his personal despair, reminds himself that there is still hope. Humanity may be on the verge of collapse in a degraded and backwards state compared to what they once were, but I didn't hear no bell.
That dragged out "Guilliman" was probably the most heartbreaking line to cap everything else off. It somehow sounds like a parent patiently chiding their child. The whole thing is such a rollercoaster.

"My last hope" --- a proud leader knowing he addresses a hero of his realm
"My last tool" --- a leader with the mask removed. Everything reduced to power and tools to power

"Betrayer" --- same as the one above
"Liar" --- same as above
"Guilliman" --- the patient tones of a parent trying to chide their child
"Lord of Ultramar" --- all the pains between childhood and the present day, recapped
I love it showing just how fragmented and distorted the Emperor is and fuck is it terrifying. Imagine your son, your greatest general betrays you then leads a crusade against everything you built in the service of gods that you know will damn all of humanity. Your son is winning, the traitors are winning, they are at your doorstep and you must act. Your mortally wounded and must kill your son while he is brought out of his corrupted mind and he begs you to destroy him, not kill, destroy where there will be nothing left. So you grant your son, the general, the warmaster, the traitor, the puppet and finally the son’s last wish. You are then placed upon one of your finest achievements and it is to be your tomb, on top you will watch your empire fall into maddening delusion and despair, you are powerless and incapable of any action. You are forced for 10,000 years to stare into your failure, to add insult to injury you have been fed sacrifices and are worshipped as a god, you have become the very monster you wanted to destroy and now it appears as though the only way forward is to accept ascension and lose everything you were. The Emperor is fucking tragic and outright horrifying when you think about it
Can’t get over how well the emperors husk of a being is portrayed in this. The low groans and droning voice is both unsettling and heartbreaking to hear.
It’s like a senile relative remembering who they were for a heartbeat before returning to madness.
That "To THEM" had more power in it than some entire movies I've watched.

Simply put, in W40K universe, there is a species of superhuman with psychic ability called Psyker. The "Emperor", the number one MVP of mankind, is the strongest psyker that ever exist.
Fast forward, the Emperor "sacrifice" himself to aid humanity's progress by using his psychic power to fuel up "the Warp", a W40K version of light-speed travel. Since the Emperor is, well, still human, he obviously can't go on forever, and his followers built him the Golden Throne, a throne-shaped life support system to keep the Emperor's biological body alive for as long as possible.
Of course, this Golden Throne is not flawless, and the Emperor is, at the end, still human. A few millenia has passed, and his body gradually decayed until it's just skin and bones.
But the Emperor's consciousness still remains, all this years, all this millenias, the Emperor sitting in the Golden Throne, still sentient, still thinking, and fully aware, despite his decaying body.
I know you tried to explain this to him but you did it wrong. Presumably Humanity built the throne during the DAoT _(Dark Age of Technology)._ It was not built specifically for the Emperor. It's preserved technology that is so advanced no one else knows how it was even created. Not even the Eldar know how it works. If humanity had built it for him then where would he no urgency in the fact that it's currently failing and will very soon stop working. The entire point of the Imperium in 40k is that they are the remnants of a dystopian past. A past that was so technologically advanced that they were almost on par with the Eldar post War in Heaven. Humanity in its current state does not have the knowledge to create new technology. They can only poorly maintain it and use fragmented blueprints from the Dark Age of Technology.

If not for Girlyman's Codex the Astartes would actually have the institutional power to prevent the Ecclesiarchy and Inquisition's overreach.
Much of the post Heresy order was designed by Guilliman, so yeah, he has his responsibility and he drastically weakened the Imperium. On the other hand, the fact that the Imperium still exists and the machinery of that post heresy order is still running despite it having been 10k years shows it wasn't as bad as it seems.
But that is separate from breaking up the Legions which was a pretty poor move in hindsight and only served to make the Imperium weaker.

They are also both possessed of Numen and therefore gods. Both even managed to get cults working for them through claims of godhood.

Honestly, that interaction was perfect. The Emperor and the Imperium of Man was always meant to be horrific *gim dark* satire. What The Emperor set out to do and what the Imperium had become are at opposite ends. The Emperor set out to form a human empire that would be strong, progressive, and secular. Guilliman essentially did that with the Worlds of Ultramar.
Guilliman waking up to see a sprawling, rotting carcass of an Imperium that is regressive and fanatical is like a neverending nightmare. I was very concerned that Guilliman would be a walking mary sue, since that's how capable Primarchs are. Instead, Guilliman is shown to be desperately holding on to hope in a galaxy awash in despair. Darkness pushing against him in all directions. It's all he can do to keep the Imperium's head above water.
The 10th edition launch trailer was so good and communicating that, too. I love that trailer.

It is bit sad that Emperor never in canon loved his "sons". Only deeming them most effective tools to embody the "best" aspects of warfare/humanity/himself.
Canonically, the only ones he truly loved where Horus and Sanguinius.
Wtf are you talking about. Canonicaly, he did. It's just that this new lore bullshit keeps trying to change the Emperor from loving father and caring ruler to this travesty of a man. "Master of Mankind" is one of many examples of this. An author who is biased with Chaos writing the book solely around the Emperor is not going to end well.

Love to see newcomers say these things when the Emperor discarding multiple sons and showing them zero love or kindness, like Angron and Perturabo, has been canon for as long as said Primarchs and legions have existed in the canon. Always funny when someone tries to play the ancient fan but doesn't even know the oldest of memes in the fanbase is how terrible a father the Emperor always was.
@@gobolgar Yes, new lore. I still remember the canon from time Horus Heresy was simple legends. The thing is before that and when they started to delve in it, canon always portrayed Emperor as a bad father, but it was simply because he was losing his grasp on his own mortality, humanity and empathy. That is why he even created Custodes to be essentially his companions, guards, and confidants. He wasn't bad father because he intentionally treated them bad, but because he was, essentially, socially inept in normal interactions and couldn't empathize, understand or comfort his sons despite his best efforts. Hence the tragedy of it all.
Then lately there is a LOT of writers that are just writing him as psycho who only saw others as tools. Especially authors who don't hide the fact Chaos is their puppy faction...
@@Aurilion44 The way you just described the Emperor is precisely how he's portrayed in the book series. He's lost touch with his humanity due to his age and godlike power, as well as his desperation to avert the worst possible future. This is his critical flaw, this is why his plans fail. This is directly called out as the main reason why he failed to connect with some of the Primarchs, which led them to fall to corruption in the end, but with others like Horus he did indeed come to see him as like a son. I don't understand what you're even complaining about.

Many souls have merged with the emperor to keep him alive, i like to imagine that those words were not directed to guilliman but instead the emperor himself. They are part of him. They know the things he has done, the mistakes he did. A lot of people were fed to him against their will, and people did not know his state before being fed to him. I too would be pretty angry when the only thing keeping me sane in that grim universe , my role model , my god , is nothing but a corpse sustained by consuming the very thing he should have protected.

Only way this coulda been better is if you included the end where big E strains himself with almost lethal effort for a last few actually slightly coherent but still messy words, with the "face" a mix between chad-E and the cosmic horror
