By just attempting to do the job is half done. Your patience and persistence are a winner plus positive mental attitude. Next try changing the oil, brakes etc you can do it, just start early.
Very impressive, you didn't give up and kept a good attitude even tho it got frustrating..welcome to the world of mechanics..and in my book you get extra points for not wearing those useless rubber gloves!!!!!!!!!!!
Good job Rachel. That's the best way to learn. Do some research and get some hands on experience. I've been a maintenance man for about 15 yrs and I'm amazed how many people put things off( making things a lot worse at times) because they are afraid to dig in and learn. Keep that mentality and you won't have to rely on other people to get things done.
JS video's Yeah that's right. I know a few individuals who got tied down to car payments for 5 plus years because they let something go too long. It's a huge pain to keep up with older model cars, but a bigger pain to shell out $500 a month.
"My dad said this would take a half an hour" Me: "It's a GM, I'm gonna have to take apart half the car to get to this thing" ...and that's if things aren't stuck
The next time you do this, if you do, it is easier to get access to if you remove the headlight. Then you have maneuverability to remove the thermostat housing. Happy hunting.
If you ever go to a car dealership to get your vehicle fixed, someone must collect your data, for repair to proceed. That is a dealership service writer. You remind me of my first wife, Michele. She loves turning wrenches. Not happy without a quite little grease smear on her nose. She took her general knowledge of auto repair and became a dealership Service Writer. The good ones meet you before you even get out of the car. With a clipboard. Like a good ER crew might. Your "baby" is sick, we can fix it. For a little money. She loved that job. Some customers started requesting she write up their car problems. She finally got if fixed. Had been to two other dealerships.
thank you for the video, I will replacing one today on my girls car, I replaced her pump yesterday and the gets hot but doesn't overheat, and the temp goes up and down so I assume this is the issue. I am buying the part from the dealership so hopefully no fitment issues.
Gilbert Luna I've seen many cars with slight temperature fluctuations but they wont overheat. It's just the way some cars are designed and they will mainly do this in stop and go traffic when they AC isnt running because the coolings aren't running until the engine reaches a certain temperature. It won't hurt the car.
I am 65. I have worked at many factory dealerships, over the years, as a general line mechanic. I could switch out a temp stat on my 67 350 Camaro SS in 5 minutes or less in1972..... Ok..... It was right on the top. In plan view. I have heard that in some GM 3.9L V6 vehicles the easiest way to replace a seemingly simple thermostat is...... Pull.... The Entire Engine........ Ok is it possible car makers maybe making cars with no regard to fixing their machines when they break? .....
Thanks for posting this Rachel and good job seeing it through! Looks like my daughter Rachel (how appropriate) has the same issue and I’ll have her watch your video before we give it a try. She’s still learning the ropes, but I mentioned to her several times that one of the most important skills in car repair is patience and perseverance which you obviously had a chance to experience firsthand! One other thing I thought I’d mention since I didn’t see anyone else do so is that Antifreeze is highly poisonous and sweet too which can make it very appealing to animals and small children so you want to be careful about disposal and capturing it as you do you work. Again, good work and thanks for sharing.
I saw the video of this and mine's is a 08 Pontiac G6 with no heat and if the thermostat and I am not going to mess with it I have a friend has a garage I'm going to take it there have him work on it I don't have no garage or the tools
Next u change the thermostat in a Pontiac G6 make sure u take the passenger headlight out. U can get to better. U dnt have to take the top breather hose off. U need to get a little more experience.
Having the right tool for the right application sure does help a lot but a lot of times you have to take stuff out of your way whether you want to or not taking the breather tube out of the way would be helpful taking the radiator hoses completely off and out of your way anything else that's in your way you have to remove that stuff for none of your tools are going to work so anyway
What make you think it is thermostat issue? My daughter had same one with 2009 G6 GT 3.5l, she was having experience overheat and I found crack leaking from heater core to tee this is under the coolant container you can see T tee... This was cracked and leaking out, then I replace new tee, and replace coolant fluid, now my daughter said her temp gauage went up and down, when she drive it went up, when she park it went down, I don't see leaking from water pump, but is it possible thermostat? What experience did you have with your thermostat?
I can’t believe you did this without ramps/Jack stands. The suggestions to pull the wheel and the headlight on that side would’ve probably given you access options…I’ve an 07 Rendezvous with the 3.5 and I had a bear of a time with the bottom/rear bolt of the housing being tough to access - luckily it didn’t need to come all the way out. You’re lucky that yours bleeds air easily.
I thought I had all the air out right after I made the video. However, when I drove it 10 miles the level went down. I put more in when I got to my destination, and I have not had any issues since. I know that this is not the correct way to go about bleeding it. I had researched it, but did not find a proper procedure. I just winged it. I may have been lucky that the pressure from the air in the system didn't rupture the hoses. I am not sure.
It takes a man to do a man's work women think that is easy. When you working on an engine on a car nothing comes off easy. And by the way she took the one headlight out in order to get easy access. Give me a hundred bucks I'll have that thermostat put on in the half-hour car running with no leaks easy money
At 1:40 there is a clear shot. The socket is on the bolt there. The thermostat is located on the passenger's side where the lower radiator hose meets the engine. Hope that helps.
Bad information, the 2006 Pontiac G6 thermostat is on the right side between the battery box cover and the engine shroud cover just below the throttle body. I know just changed one 12/31/17. Remove the air vent hose from both ends take the two 10 mm screws out, about one(1) gallon size of DEXCOOL will drain, change thermostat replace frest DEXCOOL 50/50. Good luck.
Jennifer Smith That's great, but this video is for a 2009. Try posting this information in a place where someone working on 2006 might find it. Happy New Year!
2006 3.5 motor is setup way different than the 2009. Thermostat sits under the throttle body on the 06 along with other various differences. I had an 08 with 343k on it had it apart many times. Rachel H, good job working on the car I’ve had words with the thermostat on mine replacing it lol (yes I know this comment was a year ago)
This video kicked butt so many videos do not show the struggle
By just attempting to do the job is half done. Your patience and persistence are a winner plus positive mental attitude. Next try changing the oil, brakes etc you can do it, just start early.
Nice determination..👍💪
From the point you pointed out the location i finished the job before the video ended , thanks
Youre welcome
Famous words, ima jus leave it in there🙏🏼
Very impressive, you didn't give up and kept a good attitude even tho it got frustrating..welcome to the world of mechanics..and in my book you get extra points for not wearing those useless rubber gloves!!!!!!!!!!!
Rachel, I totally appreciate your work and persistence; you helped me change the thermostat on my Saturn Aura.
Basically f*** this car
Anyone having problems, take the headlight out. Gives you direct access to the thermostat in these g6's!
Bless your heart, but next time just watch someone do it and then learn from that.
Thank you! Go bless yourself!
(TAKE THE PASSENGER SIDE HEADLIGHT OFF) All you need is a 10mm (long socket) for the thermostat, the END.
Thank god someone had some common sense😂I did it before even watching the video in less than 25 minutes
@ I am hoping this is what’s wrong with my daughters car. It shows it being hot and won’t go over 40mph and the fan continues to run.
Why put one back fla. Dude thought??? What are the down side if there's no cold like Rachael (thanks in2022) area of new York
Reproductions???
@@thurm101 was that the problem? Doing the same

Thanks for the video, despite the negative comments, your trial and errors were still very helpful!
We love you. Thanx for the video. It was real. My wife and I are so tickled you saved us some frustration. I'm calling a shop now.
Looks like a saturn aura xe
The next time you do this, if you do, it is easier to get access to if you remove the headlight. Then you have maneuverability to remove the thermostat housing. Happy hunting.
Yeah
I fucking love you thank you for taking the time to explain it all and provide locations
You make my life easy
Thanks for saving me an all day job

This is a video on how to fuck it up not fix it.
I mean, it's really about both
THAT PARTS STORE NEEDS TO GIVE YOU ANOTHER THERMOSTAT. hope it goes better.
U take off your head lamp and go through there very simple
You did great!
thank you for the video, I will replacing one today on my girls car, I replaced her pump yesterday and the gets hot but doesn't overheat, and the temp goes up and down so I assume this is the issue. I am buying the part from the dealership so hopefully no fitment issues.
No problem, how did it go?
temperature fluctuations could be caused by a low coolant level
Gilbert Luna I've seen many cars with slight temperature fluctuations but they wont overheat. It's just the way some cars are designed and they will mainly do this in stop and go traffic when they AC isnt running because the coolings aren't running until the engine reaches a certain temperature. I know this post is old anyone know if a thermostat would cause the car too leak coolant on the right side under the car
Remember, haste makes waste. If there is time to do it a second time correctly, there is time to do it right the first time
what about the old t stat socket going in somebody's grill OMG
What?

Definitely tell her to make a video with an improved process. I'd love to see it!
I saw the video of this and mine's is a 08 Pontiac G6 with no heat and if the thermostat and I am not going to mess with it I have a friend has a garage I'm going to take it there have him work on it I don't have no garage or the tools

if you left the thermostat house on and removed the hose it'll give you more leverage to remove the thermostat.

want to come and help fix my 2006
The Pontiac g6 is not an easy vehicle to work on. Very good attempt to change the thermostat.
Jack it up, remove the tire, then the wheel well for the best access.
Brave woman those how give dumb donw ignorants never compare men she may knows more them your

Good Job Kid
Randy Hoffman thank You kindly good sir! I hope you did better than I did on this one.
Pontiac G6 has one of the worst engineering flaws ever!
Fuck!
i'm proud of you and i suggest you get a manual for that car. keep doing what you're doing
did you have trouble bleeding the air outof the coolant system?
I thought I had all the air out right after I made the video. However, when I drove it 10 miles the level went down. I put more in when I got to my destination, and I have not had any issues since. remove the headlight assembly for better access, run a small screw driver between the seal and the housing for easy thermostat removal
Coolent need changing
100.00 LOL TRY 350.
What does that mean
Take out the passenger headlight so you can have more room to move around and get closer to the bolts,.
LESLIE!!!!! This made the removal process take 12 minutes; reassembly 9-10 minutes!!!!!
It takes a man to do a man's work women think that is easy. When you working on an engine on a car nothing comes off easy. And by the way she took the one headlight out in order to get easy access. OK 👍
you should have remove the bumper.
not enough information and she does not show exactly where it is
