Johnny was more interested in the success of others as he was in his, he promoted other peoples music with the same zeal, I am so proud of the legend Johnny is
The first verse and chorus, Johnny sings (approximately) an octave below Merle, then they change keys so Johnny can sing the melody higher, while Merle sings the high harmony (above Johnny). There's a female harmony too -- I guess the band is playing off-screen.
When they play the first verse and chorus, you can see their guitar fingering is in the key of G, but because they both have capos at the second fret, the song actually comes out in the key of A. As they start the second verse, Johnny starts fingering in the key of C, but due to the capos we're hearing key of D. In the first verse and chorus, Merle and Johnny both sing in the key of A (matching the capo'ed guitars), but John's vocal A is a full octave below Merle's vocal A. As the second verse begins, the two capo'ed guitars change to key of D. Johnny's vocal matches that guitar D by going up five half-steps higher than the A than he was singing earlier. In the final chorus, Johnny stays in that D and Merle joins in, but Merle sings the chorus in the key of F#, which is the harmony third above John's melody line in D. So even though Merle is singing a tight high harmony at this point, he's still singing well lower than he did (key of A) when he sang the melody in the first verse. It's all relative. And beautiful. If you want to see really beautiful harmony work, find when Lind Rondstadt was on Johnny' show. She and John sing "I Never Will Marry." In the parts where John sings lead, Linda sing a perfect high harmony that is stunningly beautiful.
What a treasure to see these two Legends together. Miss them so much. R.I.P. Merle and Johnny. Thank you for a lifetime of wonderful memories. They don't make them like this anymore.
Two of the all around best country performers we've ever known. Brings back so many great memories. When you are my age that's about all you have left. Miss both of you a lot.
I've loved Johnny Cash since I was very little and I found Merle a couple years ago, this video is an absolute beauty to me and I am 13 Cash wasn't even alive when I was born and Haggard wasn't here very long after I was born. It's amazing to me how anybody of all ages can and love some of these things.
These songs were about real life, and the singers wrote from experience and what they learned from others. Life changes less than many people think - especially in how it affects those who live through these kinds of events.
Today is Merle’s 83rd birthday and also four years since he died. I came to listen to my favorite song. Merle is my favorite singer and I still honor him everyday.
Two down to Earth good old fashioned classic country singers. Not like Today country. Elvis Presley was great to looks like all the good ones are Gone. I believe their all unnited in Heaven. God Bless them.
I think he is underestimated when it comes to his music and voice??he probably had the best Voice in country music history,, his voice was so beautiful and pure and his song writing was unmatched bar Johnny and Willie and Kris.. his voice was absolutely fantastic.i love me some Merle Haggard..R.I.P. true legend of country music ❤️❤️
One of the greatest country songs of all time. Marty's "The Chair" is similar about a guy being put to death in real time. Classic Marty put a twist to it at the end. Johnny, Merle and Marty were such good friends.
There just isn't musicians like this anymore.... Not only is there in my opinion the best country singer ever to live in Merle Haggard, but you got Johnny Cash who is a very good argument to be better singer than Haggard. This is an awesome video...
Thanks so much for this. I just saw this on the PBS country music special and I wanted to see it not all talked over. I want to swoon when da Hag closes his eyes and sings the warden line.
I remember visiting San Quinten back on October 1968 and its only recently that I have learned that Merle was then a prisoner there and only months later Johnny Cash Sang there/ How ironic that I, a British ex-prisoner should have that experience and spend a lifetime ministering to prisoners on three continents and love the music of these two giants of Country. Funny old world isn't it.
Awesome Daniel loved this one Merle and Johnny together two of the greatest legends together singing and playing together outstanding Daniel thank you from your friend Phil .
Thank you again Ali!! I really enjoy watching the videos too... I think it's very special to see these guys in their younger days... They are all getting old and passing on now!.. Have a very nice week!! :)
Wow Daniel fantastic my friend Merle and Johnny two of the greatest stars ever from this great music that we love so much great Daniel thank you from Phil .
Merle, Johnny and all the other greats of country music were icons of their era; representative of a time when America was overwhelmingly white, working class, Christian and rural. Sadly it seems that the America they represented is now gone forever ?
I agree with you brother, but it's not so much the color of our skin but this bull crap urban gang mentality. It's now cool to assault, steal rape and murder. We've seen this written somewhere haven't we? The falling away?
Your comment about Johnny being representative of a time “when America was overwhelmingly white” is not a comment that reflects who or what Johnny Cash stood for as either a person or a musician. Johnny Cash was open to all races of people, embraced and supported all races of people and was very outspoken about his disliked for groups that supported white supremacy and racial division. Johnny spoke for the poor, regardless of their race.
Daniel, what a great video. I really enjoyed seeing these great guys performing, and how young Johnny Cash looks here! Thanks for sharing my friend. Best wishes, Ali
As a musician who is starting to play and write country/alt-country music I wish I could feel satisfied with 3 chord songs. These two didn’t need much more if any tho considering they wrote some of the best music ever.
Who can singing merveilleusement also like two genius côuntryloversongers ??? Do you know what kind of scarf and the metal piece that holds it together is called?
Talking about what Merle is wearing.
I love how Merle lowers his pitch to match Johnny's. Kind of like a nod of respect in many ways by making sure Johnny's heard as well
The first verse and chorus, Johnny sings (approximately) an octave below Merle, then they change keys so Johnny can sing the melody higher, while Merle sings the high harmony (above Johnny). There's a female harmony too -- I guess the band is playing off-screen.
And the change of pace.
So true!

1 octave exactly ✔️
No band. It was a sound track.
When they play the first verse and chorus, you can see their guitar fingering is in the key of G, but because they both have capos at the second fret, the song actually comes out in the key of A. As they start the second verse, Johnny starts fingering in the key of C, but due to the capos we're hearing key of D.
