I would say the biggest improvement you want out of the exhaust is the dump pipe to try and drop the exhaust manifold pressure. Being you have a dpf and did not change anything off the back of the turbo your really just making noise for slight flow improvement in the wrong area.

Interesting segment. As a total novice I have had a number of old school 4 x 4 people all tell me the same information - not to install a chip module but give to one of a few renowned Landcruiser tuners to re-map and test on a dyno... as well as do our auto re-map.
As for exhaust I 100% agree with you - we enjoy a quiet vehicle touring - just loath a drone that really does tire you on long runs!
We have the Safari Armax and it has definitely contributed to breathing much better and now we are awaiting delivery of our new Donaldson Airbox and filter that has significantly increased specification over the standard OEM Toyota box as well as many other on the market.
Looking forward to watching future vids on your travels to see long term outcomes.
    thank-you Andrew.

Engines whether gas or diesel are simple air pumps so any time you can make them breathe in easier and exhale easier you improve efficiency gaining both fuel economy and power so I would think it's a win either way the snorkel is probably contributing maybe 5 to 8% the exhaust is actually probably around the same maybe up to 15% But it honestly just through the video sounds amazing

It may be difficult to admit but the best option is always to leave everything standard. After huge expense one gets more noise, an unmeasured and subjective performance increase and unknown influence on engine life. Why not leave perfect alone? It is by far the cheapest option.

The issue is that the 70 series engines are seriously detuned to the point where you wonder why you bothered. They have easy power gains with very little risk given the amount of power the 200 safely produces stock.

      @pietvanderwesthuyzen6502 Рік тому +7

@@pantoqwerty I have been driving Landcruisers for more than 3 decades. During the same time I noticed various modifications to petrol and diesel engines, all which aim to improve output, economy, torque, 0 to 100 times, top end speed etc etc. These "improvements" included valve jobs, turbo chargers, engine mapping, different exhausts, cold air intakes and many more. Not a single one of the above lived up to the promises. All, without fail, reduced engine life, increased noise, reduced fuel consumption, bugger up driveabilaty etc. Some engines, that normally last enormous distances, failed in extra short time. The 4,2 liter normally aspirated diesels, recked by adding turbos, comes to mind. It is true that the 200 series engine is more powerful than the 70 sometings, but it has two turbochargers, different cooling, different coatings on the pistons, different dome thinkness, different mapping etc etc. It is naive to think that the Japanese engineers have not heard of 3 inch echaust pipes, stupid snorkels or amateurish mapping. Their engines, in the various mod states, are designed and axhausivly tested by an army of PhD engineers and scientists over a wide selection of terrein, temperatures, height above sea level, sand, snow etc etc. To think that a bunch of dimwits, one which cannot even quote the first law of thermodynamics, can modify a modern finely tuned design and improve efficiency in their garage with primitive tools and no testing equipment like dyno facilities etc, is wishful thinking. Do so at own risk, and good luck with your warranty claim.

I remapped my 200-series with a reputable tuner on a dyno. It ran arguably better than stock but it had one problem. It spewed out significantly more black smoke at the exhaust pipe.
It ran quicker, doubled my torque and improved fuel economy for a black smoke screen at the back every time there is a slight incline on the road. It looked pretty stupid, in my opinion.
I returned the ECU map back to stock. It was fun while it lasted.

Usually not. The turbo blocks the exhaust anyway and forces the air in so it's much less significant than a NA car. Most cars like a hilux prado or 200 actually loose a bit of torque. I'm not sure about the stock 70 series exhaust, some DPF can cause a restriction.

    1. Turbo engines does not need intake/exaust modifications very much. Better breathing helps naturally aspirated engines mostly. 2. Those ECU maps are base maps - not specific for that particular engine/car. You can achieve better results with intake/exaust and then proper engine map fine tuned with test runs. Base maps cannot do that actually. Those base maps are probably maps programmed without intake/exaust or with them (now you are running intake/no exaust). So yeah :)))) can be done better. But thats also not bad. Important to know that turbo engines does not benefit from better breathing (intake/exaust) as much as naturally aspirated ones. People often mixed those two thinks. If you have naturally aspirated engine you need intake/exaust/headers and then some mapping in order to achieve more power. For turbo engines if the turbo is original there are no much benefit from intakes and exaust. Just the turbo dont care about pipes before and after as much as non turbo.

The Australian aftermarket scene is sum of the best in the businese but where can you buy “normal people” parts for everyday touring vehicles?
The exhaust pipe on a car is dictated to buy the size of the TURBO outlet, the outlet on a 79 series is not 3.5 inches wide😂.
The larger the pipe the more room there is for sound to bounce around in. Touring vehicles do not need excess noise.
What’s wrong with the market when all you need is an OEM replacement exhaust that flows better..., stock size, simply hi-flowed with fewer restrictions and made to the quality we have come to expect from our aftermarket industries?
The snorkel and the airbox are a fine product, meeting and exceeding the factory part.
i would really like to see Andrew test this in a traditional configuration, with a forward facing style head,
and compare what it does to the sound, and fuel economy?
For the regular touring/work vehicles, in dusty conditions, it’s nice to have the option to change out the snorkel head for different levels of air filtration and engine protection like the manufacturer intended.
The modern Diesel engine certainly does benefit the most from a good quality Aftermarket tuner.
With better fuel economy we can all drive our 4X4’s further off-road.

I don't understand the fuel economy tune. When I tuned my petrol v8 commodores you map the fuel table. The performance and cruising part are different sections of the map. Think of engine loan on one axis and engine speed on the other axis. You could clip the performance off the top to force people to drive good, but if you know how to drive you should be have the performance tune with similar fuel economy.
I also don't think the exhaust will improve fuel economy or power in a fairly stock(non drag car 1500hp) car. Turbo produce alot of back pressure and force the induction anyway. A restrictive DPF can. The only performance and economic gains are in the stock tune being bad. Usually they are super rich to provide cooling to the cylinder, also low on boost.

Hi Andrew! Changing the engine map to gain this fuel benefit, from my basic understanding of engines, made the engine run more lean. More oxygen to fuel ratio. This is what VW was caught doing. If more air is available in the engine performance goes up but the excess O2 bonds with Nitrogen from the air making NOx emissions go up.

An aspect you haven’t addressed, Andrew, is the warranty implications of all this.
I follow a couple of Toyota diesel centric mechanics channels and to a man, they point out what they see as a root cause relationship between the chippers and tuners and cracked pistons.
Yeah you can create lots of extra oomph by over fueling. And lots of extra economy by running the whole shebang somewhat leaner.
But what happens next if the engine goes all poopy in its trousers? Toyota sure as heck won’t be interested. And I bet the chippers and tuners won’t pony up a new engine either. You need to save a shiezen tonne of fuel to pay for a new engine … correct?
The chippers and tuners also rely on, without saying as much, that Toyota engineers have NFI what they’re doing. Toyota employs 350,000 people. If only one tenth of one percent of them are engine designer/engineers, that’s 350 people. How many engineers does Andrew’s chipper/tuner employ that are dedicated to Toyota? I bet it’s not even 3.
My point is warranty and reliability are important to the discussion.

As I often say, if these mods were any good the factory would put them on. I agree, many millions of dollars and countless hours are spent by auto companies on development and then someone outside decides that for a few thousand dollars of development they can add a hundred dollar chip on the motor and all is good.

The 200 makes 200kw from the same engine. I think it's fine, unless your a farmer with a 3.5t trailer and 1.5 tonnes in the back.
I tuned commodore v8s back in the day. The stock afr was 8:1 and 13 degrees advance. The same engine was in the hsv so it needed to be detuned. It would lean out to 20:1 stock at low load for economy/ emissions. stoichiometric afr is 14.7 for petrol and a very save power enriching(for wide open throttle loads) is 11:1. It should have been run at 14.7 and 12 for power enrichment with min 24 deg advance. Modern cars have knock detection so it should detune itself if the engine cylinder is getting to hot and pinging. In a diesel you only need to be concerned about exhaust gas temperatures, and usually you can get an intercooler or if you want big power and exhaust to fix that.

Those issues will generally be from people that asked for a “full send” level of tuning. Safe tunes can be had from plenty of companies that will offer improvements. It’s worth noting some engines can be tuned better than others. The 70 series is one, the 3L Prado allegedly not so much.
