Spot On review as always Gareth. I have said before on your pie reviews, local farm shops ect, pack out their pies with the meat content (AND MAKE A PROFIT!!),so why cant the supermarkets???? Rip Off Britain !!!!
To be fair you do tend to pay significantly more in farm shops, but you are generally getting a far superior product. Supermarkets screw their suppliers down to the last penny to maximise their own profits and this kind of thing is often the result.
The way they fill the pie with chicken. They pull a piece of chicken on a string and anything that falls off is for the pie. Anything left is for the rest of the batch.
My dad’s favourite story of the war. They put a cherry on a string and pulled it through 24 buns and then called them cherry buns. Better than a raspberry bun they just used bits of sawdust to pretend they were raspberry seeds.
I was going to buy one of these pies because they do look nice. So thanks to your review, I won’t buy that now. What a disappointment! Please continue trying these things out so we don’t have to.
I buy pies from a local butcher. Costs about £3.50 and you get 3 decent portions crammed full with meat. Can't ever recall buying any pie in a supermarket I was happy with. Pies are a rip off.
Lidl is my usual haunt, being just down the road from me, so this is particularly useful. I'm of an age myself where I really miss those massive, full pies that Morrisons used to do, back when they had fresh food available rather than all packaged, and don't mind paying for what I like, so if the price were high, I'd still be there because I'm getting then what I actually want to eat. With these cheap pies, I always feel you can taste what's missing, if you get me. They dissatisfy, all the time, and merely being cheap is not an actual pleasure, I feel.
There is no way that that tiny bit of chicken was 18% of the volume of ingredients! I'm from the US so maybe I'm missing something but if you told me that the chicken was 18% if the total amount of stuff in that pie, I'd call you a liar
They`re trying to replace the ingredients and keep flavour with loads of fat(78.8 g fat in this pie/112% of your daily allowance). Another thing some supermarkets do is to replace fruit with sugar which keeps the price down and tricks our taste buds. The most appealing thing about this item is the box. lol
Just more flavoured Pastry Gareth… they should rename these as Pie Rip Offs, they get away with because it actually contains what the packaging states, people “really should” learn to cook their own..👍🏻
That would make sense...but it's actually made by Shire Foods, who made a decent quality pie/pasty reviewed here some time ago. They would probably like to make this pie much more satisfying, but Lidl are in control here.
Best thing about that purchase was the foil tray, could be useful as a little seed nursery 😂.The best thing about Lidl in my humble opinion is the freshly baked bread and pastries etc😋. Keep up the good work Gareth 👍.
Glad to see that you now have a local Lidl to compare with other supermarkets. I personally never buy this particular pie, I always prefer the 2 pie packs, Lidl beef and ale/chicken leek are generally much better in my experience,
When you were reading out the percentages, the chicken content was shallow for a pie titled chicken, the amount you would expect in two-for-a-pound deals but the good bit you have saved me even more money by not getting one.👍👍
They are reducing the percentages of the main ingredients and with some other ingredients they are using cheaper ingredients like palm oil. There will only be so far they can go with reducing the main ingredients like beef, chicken and pork before the pie isn't a pie. If the pie is 450g and they claim 18% then it's 81g of chicken per pie. One thing about any product is that they can put the letter E on the packaging meaning that there could be a lot less of the main ingredients in the pie or product. The pie could have as little as 3% chicken and bacon, just a few small pieces and more leeks than anything and they call it a chicken pie. Always look for the letter E on any product this is what the producers do so they can put less of the product in the item and still call it by the main ingredients name i.e. a chicken, bacon and leek pie.
Hi Gareth, Sorry but I thought your X chicken looked 🤮 but we know where the chicken has gone the company are keeping them for Christmas 😂 thanks for sharing all the best Lin ✨
I've had one of those from Lidl, but the chilled rather than frozen variety. Also, I only ever buy them if they are reduced and it's likely that I only paid between 79p and 99p. Lunchtime today I had a Lidl creamy chicken and bacon pasta bake. I bought it 60% off and it cost me £1!!
They are very good tbh, well worth a go if you like fish. I wonder if these videos get watched by any supermarket execs? Would be nice to think it could lead to improving these products (probably a pipe dream).
