Great review Gareth, my ex wife worked at Mornflake Oats here in Crewe for about 30yrs, she worked in the packing room and would tell you, they packed Oats for Asda, Morrisons, Tesco, Aldi, plus many more big stores, have a look at the packaging it used to say packed by Morning Foods, which is Mornflakes trading name.👍
It's the same with dairy products. My husband worked in or and I didn't believe him so he took me on a tour i watch as they filled marks and Spencer yogurt then stopped the machine changed the containers to a well known cheaper store own brand then began pouring exact same yoghurt as had gone into marks and sparks containing ers.
Yeah I worked in a cake factory and most of products were just put in different packaging for different shops' some times the quantity of ingredients were changed also' 🤯
As a Scot, porridge (bring water or milk to the boil then add oats and simmer) cooked on the hob is best the traditional way letting the oats break down, nice review Gareth👍
I was brought up on Scott's Porridge Oats but I love the Aldi oats for 70p. I can't tell the difference! I have mine with fresh raspberries, banana etc... it gives the sweetness 💕
Hi Gareth. Three bowls of porridge, now that has a familiar ring to it 🐻 Porridge is a good winter's breakfast, so warming and keeps you filled up. I only ever use milk (oat milk) when making porridge, and don't add salt. I like Molasses on mine, it makes the porridge go nice and dark, but not too sweet. Mate, you're not going to be short of porridge for a while. There's always other uses for rolled oats. Another fine product review today Gareth. Cheers 🤤👍😀
The great thing about porridge, is that you can have it for dinner as well if you don't feel like cooking much or cooking for one. Fills you up nicely!
I’ve been watching your videos for quite a while now but this’ll be my first time commenting, seeing as everybody is giving their own preferred recipes for porridge I’d like to add something of my own incase anyone’s reading.. I make mine with milk on the stove but one key difference (if I’m in the mood for it) is that once it’s more or less cooked and at my desired thickness (I like mine quite thick) I’ll take it off the heat and crack an egg or two into it, then I’ll quickly stir it in before it scrambles (if you’re too slow you’ll ruin it) then I’ll finish it off with some sugar or some honey for the sweetness. Most people balk at the idea before I explain that milk + eggs +sugar/honey is essentially a custard without the vanilla. The eggs thicken it up and make it really nice and rich, creamy and filling plus they provide a good deal of extra nutrition. I’m really enjoying being a member of this channel, it’s a great thing you’re doing for people, especially in today’s climate. Thanks! :)
My wife and I have been using the Aldi oats for the last 2 years. I measure out 100g of oats and add 400ml water and 100ml milk. Microwave for 3 1/2 minutes, give this a stir and then microwave for another 30 seconds. We add a few sultanas and chopped dates to each plate, lovely!
Microwaves kill 97% of the nutrition in food as it cooks on a cellular level. A conventional cooker will only kill 30% of the nutrition. Don’t cook in a microwave !!
I also microwave mine but it only takes 2 minutes in mine. Mind you, I use half a bowl of water only and find that's enough 🤗I add milk and whatever else afterwards.
I hadn’t eaten porridge oats since I was a child and started eating it again the beginning of this year. I put the oats in a plastic 1litre tub add 200g oats, 30g sultana’s and pour 500ml milk on them. Throw it in the fridge and eat it cold over the next 4 days. No need for any sugar as the sultana’s sweeten it beautifully, by the next morning they are as soft as cooked. It can last for 6 days in a fridge no problem. I’ve now converted a number of people after I got them to try it. 😀
I've been using the Aldi one, made with semi skimmed milk on the hob, then I add a few sunflower seeds on the top for the crunch, and maple syrup. Gorgeous !
If you like a bit of a “bite” to your oats, you should try the Scott’s Old Fashioned Porage Oats. They’re much bigger than these rolled oats!! Or try steel cut oats.
Scots Old Fashioned Porage Oats and Jumbo Whole Oats from Sainsbury are how I like it. Bigger, meatier oats with more bite. Would like to try steel cut but I've never been able to find them in my local stores.
My mum is Scottish, and she always used to have porridge oats but instead of milk, she used water 🤢. I love porridge myself so thank you for doing this comparison. Sending love from the UK 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
It's the traditional way to make porridge in Scotland. Nice and thick base with lovely ice cold milk. Some sprint ole sugar over it when it's i bowl the salt is added to the cooking water. You can't beat a bowl of piping hot porridge on a crisp cold Scottish morning. Personally I can't stand idea of sugar on porridge but that's how husband likes his.
Hi Gareth, great video. I’ve tried SO many different makes of porridge and ALWAYS come back to Aldis everyday essentials 🤷♀️ As a Scot I do 1 cup oats to 2cups milk, I cup water and half a teaspoon of salt. LOW AND SLOW is the best way. Start on a number 4 until it starts to thicken then turn it down to number 2 for the last 7 minutes or so. 21 minutes is the magic number for perfection 😂
Kavanagh's Organic Porridge Oats for me, I like to prepare them the evening before, 40g oats plus 160g milk measured in a large jam jar and then leave in the fridge overnight to soak, then microwave on full power for 1 minute, stir and then microwave on full power for another 1 minute. Serve with a little golden syrup and double cream.
A year later , I’ve made porridge (Aldi Scottish oats) for the 2nd time today- yesterday was stressful and it exploded all over the microwave lol. I then used my brain and thought surely low and slow, after it just started to boil , was the way to go. It definitely was ! They were lovely and I only like instant oats usually. Going to try your way tomorrow though, as I think they could be even better 😊 ( appreciate you likely won’t see this a year on but)
I swapped to those aldi oats a year or two ago and really like them compared to both morrisons and tesco. They have a good consistency to the oat and make a decent breakfast plus being in a paper bag I can use it to hold kindling for starting my fire or stove.
Traditional Scottish was to make porridge is over the hob with water and some salt. You can sprinkle some sugar then add cold milk over the top after it is cooked. It was always Scott’s Porage (they even spelt it differently) in our family and I still think the best due to the type of oats and how they are milled.
I am Scottish so Scott's oats were a staple in the 70s growing up! Still love porridge now but I buy the cheaper versions! I only eat it with hot milk, nothing else added👍
I’ve tried the Idohoan instant mash and it’s not bad at all. Better than Smash. Great when you’ve run out of spuds or you just can’t be bothered with all the peeling. They come in different flavours too. Great video. 👍🏻
Thanks for the review on the old porridge oats, what a price difference, I dont think I will be wasting my hard earned cash on the scots one, cheers Gareth 👍
I like asdas JE porridge, I put salt in before zapping it in the microwave, sugar on top after it's cooken then milk, the old fashioned way, it's also nice with a dollop of syrup or runny honey, I have cereal and fruit for brekkie but often have a bowl of porridge for my tea
Great video. I love the cheaper porridge oats. l like to add cinnamon, nutmeg, pumpkin and sunflower seeds with frozen berries and half chopped fresh apple. All cooked in water, its so tasty and really fills me up. I'm very happy with cheap porridge. Enjoyable video, especially in these difficult times.
For the last ten years , I have always used the cheapest oats I can find . to be honest the Asda is for me the tastiest . I like to add a teaspoon of single cream and half a teaspoon of honey . Love your videos . Entertaining and informative .
We use the golden syrup porridge instant pots as I can get the Free From version as I can't have milk. When I was young it was always Ready Brek at home. My missus is Scottish, and used to tell me off when making natural oat porridge that I didn't leave it long enough for the oats to cook, tasted ok to me though lol. Remember the advert for Ready Brek 'Central heating for kids'...All the best bud.
You are really great how you show appreciation for the food you you are testing and your tips for adjusting the cheaper ones and you bring a dignity to the whole situation that people are facing today with regards to the money in our pockets thank you for your kindness towards people's feelings Carol
Another great comparison Gareth. I always used Scotts porridge oats although I know you'll slate me but I preferred ready brek😂 I've had the Aldi oats and I actually like them.
Hello Gareth, The correct Scottish way to prepare porridge is to boil the oats in water with a pinch of salt, when cooked pour the porridge into a flattish bowl and pour in a little cold milk, the porridge should be thick and in one piece floating on the milk so that you can spin around in the bowl. Eat and enjoy. Porridge is a savoury dish in Scotland, we never add sugar, honey or golden syrup or anything else to sweeten it.
I'm not a big fan of porridge as such but I love porridge oats with cold milk, dried and/or fresh fruit, some nuts, and a little slosh of maple syrup. Yum. I remember getting a full bag of shrimps, jelly snakes, and flying saucers for about 5p! Happy days!
Love porridge, also great for making overnight oats, get a jam jar, chuck some oats in, bit of natural or Greek yogurt then top with fruit of your choice, strawberry, nana, kiwi, blueberry, drizzle of honey leave overnight in fridge, yum brekkie.
Oats in scotland are called porage, oats produced elsewhere are called porridge, the oats used in scotts oats are different. even so you do pay a large amount for scotts porage oats due to branding etc, they are finer cut but look chunkier because they clump together better, so the processing is a bit different, i believe oats is oats but, texture is an important feature so i personally stick with what i know from my childhood ie scotts porage oats. Great video, Cheers. Andy . Scotland. 👍
I've been using the Tesco big bag for 70p/75p for years. I quite like normal porridge, but I much prefer the consistency of Ready Brek (but not prepared to pay for it), so I just use a stick blender to blend the oats with milk and then cook in micro, then add whatever I feel like - honey, sugar, syrup, banana, berries, whatever.
I always have Quaker oats as the Scotts oats are too big for me (I like it smooth). However, following your review, next time I need to get more I thiink I'll give Aldi's a go. I use one teacup oats, one teacup oat milk and one teacup water and make mine on the stove. Thank you so much for the review.
when i was studying production horticulture we learned why grains vary in price and with oats its to do with the protein and carbohydrates when for baking or alcohol production and for consumption higher grade is denoted by a higher fibre content which changes the texture and makes them firmer. but in the end there is not a lot of difference between them in a general nutritional way other than the cheap porage oats hive slightly less fibre. in some ways i like the really cheap oats as it turns to mush it why i blend my porage oats as well i like a smooth texture
Love the videos - I swapped my kids from organic oats to asda just essentials, they literally could not tell the difference. I think it is all about how you make them.
I find that if you leave it on the side for half an hour it goes really thick and lovely ,all you have to do is heat it up for a minute to re warm it .
💕 I LOVE oats, not just for breakfast!! I make my own Oat Flour and Oat Milk🥛! With One large Aldi bag, I use half for flour and half for milk, lasts me a good month if not 6 weeks!!💕
Another ‘Spot On’ review Gareth, thank you. The question has to be ‘what is an oat?’ When I was little, like you I had Scott’s porridge oats, I can’t remember if it was made with milk or water, we were poor! Now, I like mine made with water and really, really, thick so you have to carve it out the bowl. To answer the question; it’s an oat, it doesn’t matter how it’s dressed up in a box or bag, it’s oats! All the best pall to you and yours.
Intresting video while you pointed out that they all pretty much was the same in taste i do believe you get all your moneys worth in the scotts oats probably the best in porridge names out there for me verry healthy to.
Just had Aldi's big bowl of porridge for my tea with mixed of spices and honey. I cook mine in water as I have spring water nearby pumped through my own pump. Oats are very good for you to help lower cholesterol health benefit
I remember the early 80's Gareth. I left school in 1983. We used to go to the local sweet shop after school and buy a 10 penny mix. I can also remember lucky bags. I had an Aunt who used to visit and every time she did, she brought lucky bags with her. We still talk about that to this day!! 😅
I buy Scott's Porage Oats through Amazon as oats here in the States have all sorts of chemicals sprayed on them. But the cost is frightful - 1 Kg $22.99! But worth it as the taste is so good. I enjoy your show and just wish we had as great a variety of food here as you have in the UK.
I eat a lot of porridge, usually from Aldi and LIdl but after watching this I bought the Asda essentials one not expecting much difference. But it is soooo nice and creamy ! And I make my porridge with water and then put milk on top like my mum used to and it is still creamier. Bought my second bag today.
My go-to breakfast for years after my dentist told me muesli and nuts were damaging my teeth with all the grinding. The best breakfast for energy and your heart. I buy Waitrose own brand or Aldi. Recipe: one portion of oats, some water, some soya milk. 3 minutes 20 seconds in the microwave. Stir in a small spoonful of African wild honey ( no added sugar and picked from forests). Add half a sliced banana and some blueberries and/or raspberries. About 50p in costs. I can ride my bike for 2 hours on that and I'm 71! Every schoolchild should be eating porridge before school and not the usual junk.
Porridge is the best breakfast, keeps adults and kids fuller for longer (also good for cholesterol problems). You can make the oats finer in a food processor if you like smooth. Also make your own flapjacks... put in dried fruits/nuts, whatever you like and you have energy bars for lunchboxes/picnics... make your own muesli likewise if you prefer and add your own berries/nuts. Oats make a great crumble topping too. Mackerel is great roasted in an oat batter. Just a few suggestions as you've now got a lot of oats to use up! Lol
I've been buying the aldi essentials oats for years for my kids. They have it pimped up with a bit of (aldi own brand) nutella. Honestly never occurred to me to buy branded when they aren't actually after the taste of the oats but the chocolate that covers it.
Oats are the best value breakfast there is, I do ‘morning oats’ soakng them overnighti in water then in the norning I pop a spoon of honey (any maybe some pumpkis seeds) on top and just warm it in the ding. Strangely I’ve just got gack from Aldi with a bag of these, not used thiers before- so it will be interesting to see how they work out.
Relieved to know you're still getting your Oats, Gareth. You know what, I don't think I have eaten Oat Porridge for over 20 years. So, once again, you have put those seeds in my mind to buy some .... Long overdue ! Cheers, my friend, great review and video ... Thank you 👏👍😉
i have found the best way to make porridge is to put the amount of porridge in a pan, add the milk and leave overnight to soak ,bring to a simmer for a couple of minutes, and if you have it add a small amount of double cream, this makes it nice and warming with abit of honey
Hi Gareth, I was using Quaker oats which are 1.20 now I will be going to Aldi, thanks, I do overnight oats if your interested, half cup oats, half cup milk, tspoon choc protein, apple, cinnamon or blueberries and let me tell you it's another delicious alternative to how I grew up eating them in Scotland.
I use Aldi oats. I make them with home made nut milk, a date for sweetness, a pinch of salt, a finely chopped apple cinnamon and an ounce of berries. Delicious and very filling.
I was brought up on Scott’s or Quaker Oats for porridge . In expensive times these taste testing helps with deciding if things are worthwhile trying. I have been buying KAVANGH’S organic oats from ALDI and they are very very nice but are nearly £2 per kg . I may mix it with some cheaper options.
2 роки тому+1
Kavanaghs make a 1.5kg "not" organic for the same price. They're €1 in Ireland but it's hardly worth the trip.
we always made it this wayin our family... ( scots family in case anyone wonders) usually made at night, 1 cup oats to two cups water, add salt in the water until it was pretty salty tasting, let it sit half an hour, stirring when ever you passed it, to get the starch to come out, then hard boil until it thickens, in to a bowl and leave until morning, in the morning it was set solid to the point you could almost slice it, poured cold milk in and it would then float away from the sides, salty and you got the sweet from the milk, delicious.....in fact im off to make some, im now 58 and have eaten it regular since i can remember, i heard stories in the previous generations it was poured in to a cupboard drawer lined with a clean pillow case and the wooden drawer then removed and wicked away a lot of the moisture during the night and it was actually sliced for the miners before going to work
We used Quaker but it was getting a bit 'gritty', but now use Sainsburys own Scotts porridge. Grind it up in one of them Kenwood mini processor things. Makes lovely smooth porridge. Saucepan on scales, Zero scales, and add 20g of ground oats and top up to 220g with milk. Heat till it just starts to bubble, stirring all the time and then simmer for 2 mins. Sugar to taste. Add topping of choice. Squeezy Strawberry jam for me or sliced ripe banana. (I have the food taste of a child😀). Makes it super quick. Great video and channel. Thank You👍
I love your videos. If you go back to read the contents in the Aldi ingredients states oat flakes, whereas the other ones state rolled oats. The oat flakes may not be the same as rolled oats do to bring processed flatter and would change the texture and consistency. Thanks for all the testing.
oats will vary depending where they are grown, or the wearher they grow in. I have been eating porridge for years, even the same brand will vary from batch to batch. I personaly have settled on Lidls, not their cheapest but the ones in the box at 85p. per kg not dear. I find the cheapest, from either aldi or lidl tend to have more black bits in the oats sometimes. regarding the bite you mentioned in scotts porridge, that is because as you said they where a bigger oats, so takes longer to cook I like smooth porridge, but my partener likes a bit of texture, meaning slightly under cooked for me. I have had a few bad results microwaving porridge over the years what a mess if they boil over or explode I had a mirowave pressure cooking bowl I used fo a while till it exploded!! so now I use a electric pressure cooker that has porridge Button that defaults to 15 minutes cooking but can be changed up or down to taste , plus it has a time delay to allow me to put raw stuff in before I go to Bed, and in morning I wake up to cooked Porridge. for this to work I put water in pressure cooker, then another steel bowl in the water with ingredients in it, not pyrex dish in pressure cookers not reconmended by pyrex, also I cook two days worth at a time. It keeps ok for 24hrs out of fridge. I microwave secound day bowl of porridge for 1min 10 secs.results will differ on micros power ratings This method requires no stirring, but word of warning let the pressure release go down naturally do not release pressure or it will most likely boil over sorry for long winded comment, but I loove this way of making porridge it is so creamy.
Just as personal preference I choose jumbo oats or even better, steel cut oats. Cooked with water and a bit of salt on the hob. I'm from Sweden and I feel that this comes closest to what I used to have at home. In the winter served with cinnamon, ginger nutmeg, stewed apples and sometimes some pan roasted flakes and nuts and cold milk
When I was growing up we used to call it pinngröt - woodchip porridge as it was so harsh and coarse. Here all porridge seems creamier and "softer" but sometimes I get some swedish oats sent over..heaven!
Hi Gareth. I hope all is well with you and your family. I have oats every other day. I buy them from macro and they come from NZ. I convert them to instant oats with an old coffee grinder, just a quick zap is enough. I pre prepare a few bags of the amount I use and use a mix of water and full fat milk and microwave for 5 minutes stirring half way through. Whole oats take a lot longer. Best wishes from Thailand. Don and family. Oats are also a main ingredient in my DIY muesli !!
My wife and I have had oats for breakfast for years. However we don't make them into porridge, but have them uncooked with dried fruit for sweetness. In my case usually chopped dates, but sometimes mixed fruit. My wife prefers raisins or sultanas. We mix with cold full fat milk and the result is akin to muesli, but easier on the teeth. I like them drier and more chewy. She prefers them softer and leaves them longer to soak the milk. Frankly we have not noticed much difference between the cheapest and the more expensive labelled products. As is usually the case with natural products they vary, not only between different suppliers, but from the same supplier, no doubt depending on where the oats had been grown and the weather conditions that pertained through the growing season. Oats are one of the few products we confidently buy solely on price.
Cheers Gareth great review mate. Same as you mate I was bought up on porridge, With whole milk and plenty of Salt . They all look good to me . Cheers buddy see you soon.❤👍❤👍❤👍
I find the cheaper oats to be grittier, though they do taste pretty much the same. I go for cheap on most things, so I'll stick with the slightly dearer porridge. Great vids though.
Yet another great vlog Gareth, I suggest people go out and buy a few packs of the cheapest oats before they start to go up in price the more people buy them. 😁
Had Scott’s growing up. Have tried other versions but much prefer Scottt’s, made with hot milk on the hob, left to rest 4 5 mins with a lid on after gas turned off. Add cream & sugar….. gorgeous x
It's another no brainer, 70p vs £2.30p for basically the same product. I have never tried any brand name porridge/porage in over 58 years and at that price I never will. Another great vid.
I buy Scotts porage oats as I prefer them, I may give the cheaper ones a try though to save some money. I usually make my mine with ratio of 50g porage oats, 300ml half milk and water and zap in the microwave for 5 minutes ( I only use full fat milk). I like mine with a little cold milk over the top, so the porage spins in the bowl....add to that a chopped banana and a drizzle of honey. Since I'm the only one who eats porage in my house, it lasts me quite a while.
@@BaldFoodieGuy you mean cooking them overnight? Can't say I have if that's the case. Edit:- *ahh just checked, it means soaking them overnight lol! No I've never tried doing that
Hi, I live in france. The cheapest porridge oats are 92 euro cents for 500g In Lidl At todays calculation we are paying more than twice as much for the same product . Why? In fact overall we are paying far more than UK consumers for most of our groceries. Thank you for this comparison. Its all the same product.
Hi I’m not new to your channel but first time commenting I think most of the Asda essentials are good and if your on a budget they are just fine appreciate your videos
Can't beat a bowl of warm and creamy porridge and as a special treat, I add a few squares of Cadbury milk chocolate....ooooh its divine. Thank you for your reviews, always enjoy watching.
Growing up in the 70s we had readybrek as kids. I loved that advert central heating for kids, I know it’s ground instant oats but normal oats I always cook on the hob, with a pinch of salt while cooking then pour into a bowl sprinkle sugar and cold milk on top, we only had quakers and Scott’s back then.
porridge with salt and honey slowly cooked with milk... i buy the aldi, cheap and good... or if you want ready break put a load into a blender and chop up until fine... add milk cook and its ready in minutes.
I have been having the golden syrup packets of porridge for years now. It's lovely but works out expensive, so I tried the Aldi 1kg bag like you. It's ok but it " has an effect " on my stomach if you know what I mean. I may give the Asda 1 a try on your recommendation though. Porridge fills me up until lunch I find 👍👍
Porridge oats are porridge oats at the end of the day so I ALWAYS buy a shops own bargain basement brand then add granulated sugar and golden syrup myself because it tastes JUST THE SAME as the 37g sachets but it's also SOOO much cheaper doing it yourself as well.

Are you really from Crewe if you didn't add Cheshire England after it?
In my past job "crewe Cheshire England" was the usual ask of "Where you from" 😄

yes very true
I never knew that was the best way to make it. I've always added the oats to cold water then heated it up. I'll definitely try it your way!
I cook mine in the hay box after bringing milk and oats to a rolling boil. It doesnt catch on the bottom of the pan either.
I just soak oats in yogurt overnight at 42degreeC.
I buy Kavagnah Organic oats from Aldi. Nice big flakes, makes brilliant porridge, and isn't expensive.
Still probably has 100% oats as the only ingredient!
I was brought up on Scott's Porridge Oats but I love the Aldi oats for 70p. I can't tell the difference! I have mine with fresh raspberries, banana etc... it gives the sweetness 💕

Going to try your way tomorrow though, as I think they could be even better 😊 ( appreciate you likely won’t see this a year on but)
@@locket5312 Yey! So glad you liked them! We generally have porridge 6 days a week 😂
I’ve had the Aldi one for a few years now they are excellent value . I add Golden syrup and evaporated milk .
Keep up the good work
Cheers Rob will do 👍👍
Brilliant Gareth, thanks. I love porridge with a dollop of honey.
Hope you enjoy
I swapped to those aldi oats a year or two ago and really like them compared to both morrisons and tesco. They have a good consistency to the oat and make a decent breakfast plus being in a paper bag I can use it to hold kindling for starting my fire or stove.
cheers Andy
Traditional Scottish was to make porridge is over the hob with water and some salt. You can sprinkle some sugar then add cold milk over the top after it is cooked. It was always Scott’s Porage (they even spelt it differently) in our family and I still think the best due to the type of oats and how they are milled.
Cheers Alan
Yes, I like the old fashioned ones- they are thicker cut.
Good to know! thanks Pat
Thanks for the review on the old porridge oats, what a price difference, I dont think I will be wasting my hard earned cash on the scots one, cheers Gareth 👍
I like asdas JE porridge, I put salt in before zapping it in the microwave, sugar on top after it's cooken then milk, the old fashioned way, it's also nice with a dollop of syrup or runny honey, I have cereal and fruit for brekkie but often have a bowl of porridge for my tea
thanks 😊
Great video. I love the cheaper porridge oats. l like to add cinnamon, nutmeg, pumpkin and sunflower seeds with frozen berries and half chopped fresh apple. All cooked in water, its so tasty and really fills me up. I'm very happy with cheap porridge. Enjoyable video, especially in these difficult times.
Cheers Rainbow
For the last ten years , I have always used the cheapest oats I can find . to be honest the Asda is for me the tastiest . I like to add a teaspoon of single cream and half a teaspoon of honey . Love your videos . Entertaining and informative .
Cheers Alan
I'm glad I'm not the only one who puts sugar and salt in my porridge! 😁👍
Haha you're definitely not alone

Goldie Locks had the same problem ... but eventually got the taste "just right." in the end . 👱♀️
Remember the advert for Ready Brek 'Central heating for kids'...All the best bud.
yes its tasty that. I used take the pots into work and have them for breakfast. All the best.
You are really great how you show appreciation for the food you you are testing and your tips for adjusting the cheaper ones and you bring a dignity to the whole situation that people are facing today with regards to the money in our pockets thank you for your kindness towards people's feelings Carol
Thank you kindly
Another great comparison Gareth. I always used Scotts porridge oats although I know you'll slate me but I preferred ready brek😂 I've had the Aldi oats and I actually like them.
Thank you kindly 👍👍
I prefer Ready Brek too.
I miss the different flavours that were available in the 1980s.
Cheers David
Gareth ..great post again !! We are very pleased to hear that you are still getting your oats at age 50 (LOLx soz couldn't resist that one )
Haha cheers
I'm not a big fan of porridge as such but I love porridge oats with cold milk, dried and/or fresh fruit, some nuts, and a little slosh of maple syrup. Yum. I remember getting a full bag of shrimps, jelly snakes, and flying saucers for about 5p! Happy days!
Cheers the good old days 👍👍
Someone else who eats them with cold milk nuts and fruit, makes me feel normal
@@annbilling7036 we are normal its tasty cold with sugar puffs or crunchy nut cornflakes, its a food not wallpaper paste
@Davie not for me no, only for my husband
Love porridge, also great for making overnight oats, get a jam jar, chuck some oats in, bit of natural or Greek yogurt then top with fruit of your choice, strawberry, nana, kiwi, blueberry, drizzle of honey leave overnight in fridge, yum brekkie.
Cheers pal 😋😋😋👌
Yes! I prefer oats cold like that!
I always buy Aldi porridge. As you say add sugar to your own personal taste. Also I like to add a few raisins. Always look forward to your vlogs xx
Great tip!
Yep, same for me, Aldi porridge and raisins , ( one of your 5 a day) no sugar for me but sometimes adding cinnamon 😋
Andy . Scotland. 👍
Cheers Andy 👍👍
I've been using the Tesco big bag for 70p/75p for years. I quite like normal porridge, but I much prefer the consistency of Ready Brek (but not prepared to pay for it), so I just use a stick blender to blend the oats with milk and then cook in micro, then add whatever I feel like - honey, sugar, syrup, banana, berries, whatever.
You do exactly the same as me
I prefer it smoother so blend it, though I heat the milk in the microwave before adding it to the oats.
Cheers Moira 👍👍
For me it's one cup water to just under two cups water teaspoon salt. Nice smooth thick porridge
when i was studying production horticulture we learned why grains vary in price and with oats its to do with the protein and carbohydrates when for baking or alcohol production and for consumption higher grade is denoted by a higher fibre content which changes the texture and makes them firmer. but in the end there is not a lot of difference between them in a general nutritional way other than the cheap porage oats hive slightly less fibre. in some ways i like the really cheap oats as it turns to mush it why i blend my porage oats as well i like a smooth texture
Fantastic information thank you very much 👌👌
Going by your review, I would go for the Asda Essentials. Brilliant review! Thanks Gareth.
Glad it was helpful!
Love the videos - I swapped my kids from organic oats to asda just essentials, they literally could not tell the difference. I think it is all about how you make them.
good point
Best to eat organic oats tho. Because of glyposhate..
Your welcome Gareth, I buy Asda essentials and I can not tell the difference, love these videos.
cheers David, thanks pal
I find that if you leave it on the side for half an hour it goes really thick and lovely ,all you have to do is heat it up for a minute to re warm it .
💕 I LOVE oats, not just for breakfast!! I make my own Oat Flour and Oat Milk🥛! With One large Aldi bag, I use half for flour and half for milk, lasts me a good month if not 6 weeks!!💕
Great idea!!
All the best pall to you and yours.
cheers John, hope all is well with you and the family. All the best 👍
Sound good
I remember the early 80's Gareth. I left school in 1983. We used to go to the local sweet shop after school and buy a 10 penny mix. I can also remember lucky bags. I had an Aunt who used to visit and every time she did, she brought lucky bags with her. We still talk about that to this day!! 😅
Brilliant memories 👌👌
I buy Scott's Porage Oats through Amazon as oats here in the States have all sorts of chemicals sprayed on them. But the cost is frightful - 1 Kg $22.99! But worth it as the taste is so good. I enjoy your show and just wish we had as great a variety of food here as you have in the UK.
Perfect timing video, I love porridge, no sugar or salt for me, and with the current credit crunch in UK, I'm looking for cheaper breakfast options
Sounds great!
Thanks for sharing!
Asda essentials are holding their own aren’t they? Great to know, thanks Gareth x
yes Diane definitely xx
Lovely porridge oats especially with golden syrup, yummy! Defo Scott's for me though, like to make them into flapjacks.
Yes I like the pots with syrup 😋😋👌
My go-to breakfast for years after my dentist told me muesli and nuts were damaging my teeth with all the grinding. The best breakfast for energy and your heart. I buy Waitrose own brand or Aldi. Recipe: one portion of oats, some water, some soya milk. 3 minutes 20 seconds in the microwave. Stir in a small spoonful of African wild honey ( no added sugar and picked from forests). Add half a sliced banana and some blueberries and/or raspberries. About 50p in costs. I can ride my bike for 2 hours on that and I'm 71! Every schoolchild should be eating porridge before school and not the usual junk.
cheers pal
I cannot recall last time I had my oats...but for sure it be ASDA's I get em next!...TY!
Aldi also do Kavanagh's which is my go to now. Others I've found a bit meh or just don't cook right for my taste buds. Great vid 🤘
cheers pal
Porridge is the best breakfast, keeps adults and kids fuller for longer (also good for cholesterol problems). You can make the oats finer in a food processor if you like smooth. Also make your own flapjacks... put in dried fruits/nuts, whatever you like and you have energy bars for lunchboxes/picnics... make your own muesli likewise if you prefer and add your own berries/nuts. Oats make a great crumble topping too. Mackerel is great roasted in an oat batter.
Just a few suggestions as you've now got a lot of oats to use up! Lol
Thanks
I've been buying the aldi essentials oats for years for my kids. They have it pimped up with a bit of (aldi own brand) nutella. Honestly never occurred to me to buy branded when they aren't actually after the taste of the oats but the chocolate that covers it.
Cheers pretty good arnt they
Oats are the best value breakfast there is, I do ‘morning oats’ soakng them overnighti in water then in the norning I pop a spoon of honey (any maybe some pumpkis seeds) on top and just warm it in the ding. Strangely I’ve just got gack from Aldi with a bag of these, not used thiers before- so it will be interesting to see how they work out.
Yes my good lady likes overnight oats
I use the aldi ones and I usually put milk and a small handful of aldis frozen mixed berries in before microwaving tastes delicious
Your doing a grand job lad. I use the Aldi, but I do add a spoon full of apple sauce, a spoon of cinnamon and a squirt of honey. Lovely Jubilee
thanks 😁
Relieved to know you're still getting your Oats, Gareth. You know what, I don't think I have eaten Oat Porridge for over 20 years. So, once again, you have put those seeds in my mind to buy some .... Long overdue ! Cheers, my friend, great review and video ... Thank you 👏👍😉
haha only just cheers Mark
i have found the best way to make porridge is to put the amount of porridge in a pan, add the milk and leave overnight to soak ,bring to a simmer for a couple of minutes, and if you have it add a small amount of double cream, this makes it nice and warming with abit of honey
Cheers Pal good tip
I have the absolute basic Tesco porridge oats, I use milk and add a spoonful of cocoa powder to it , bloody lovely.
That’s a great idea coco
Hi Gareth, I was using Quaker oats which are 1.20 now I will be going to Aldi, thanks, I do overnight oats if your interested, half cup oats, half cup milk, tspoon choc protein, apple, cinnamon or blueberries and let me tell you it's another delicious alternative to how I grew up eating them in Scotland.
thanks Linda, welcome to the channel. All the best, Gareth
I use Aldi oats. I make them with home made nut milk, a date for sweetness, a pinch of salt, a finely chopped apple cinnamon and an ounce of berries. Delicious and very filling.
Sounds great!
Kavanaghs make a 1.5kg "not" organic for the same price. They're €1 in Ireland but it's hardly worth the trip.
I’d definitely stick with organic when it comes to oats. Normal ones are absolutely filled with horrible pesticides
we always made it this wayin our family...
Thank You👍
You're welcome Richard
Mornflake jumbo oats for me every time. Idaho cheesy mash is the biz too!! 👍👍
I love your videos. If you go back to read the contents in the Aldi ingredients states oat flakes, whereas the other ones state rolled oats. The oat flakes may not be the same as rolled oats do to bring processed flatter and would change the texture and consistency.
Thanks for all the testing.
Yes Oat flakes 👌👌
Great review Gareth, I've got a bag of the Asda one to try.
thanks
Yeah crazy that the brand name companies think they can get away with price gouging
oats will vary depending where they are grown, or the wearher they grow in.
Thank you, great comment 👌
I use the slow cooker on the low setting & a 24hr plug in timer.
Switches on at 4am ... Porridge ready 6.30 -7am
Saves LOTS of time on school days .
Great video Gareth, I remember the adverts for Scott's porridge, O I don't like porridge🥴 There was a great TV called Porridge
Haha yes
Have always had Quaker Oats but will give Asda a try thankyou for this one
you're welcome
Just as personal preference I choose jumbo oats or even better, steel cut oats. Cooked with water and a bit of salt on the hob. I'm from Sweden and I feel that this comes closest to what I used to have at home. In the winter served with cinnamon, ginger nutmeg, stewed apples and sometimes some pan roasted flakes and nuts and cold milk
When I was growing up we used to call it pinngröt - woodchip porridge as it was so harsh and coarse. Here all porridge seems creamier and "softer" but sometimes I get some swedish oats sent over..heaven!
Thank you
@@zandraling9121 you can get them here ,they're just called 'jumbo oats' but they're more expensive

Oats are also a main ingredient in my DIY muesli !!
cheers Don, all the best
Great that thank you for sharing 👌👌
Hi Gareth

I find the cheaper oats to be grittier, though they do taste pretty much the same. I go for cheap on most things, so I'll stick with the slightly dearer porridge. Great vids though.
thanks 😊
Yet another great vlog Gareth, I suggest people go out and buy a few packs of the cheapest oats before they start to go up in price the more people buy them. 😁
thanks Peter
Had Scott’s growing up. Have tried other versions but much prefer Scottt’s, made with hot milk on the hob, left to rest 4 5 mins with a lid on after gas turned off. Add cream & sugar….. gorgeous x
Thanks for sharing!
It's another no brainer, 70p vs £2.30p for basically the same product. I have never tried any brand name porridge/porage in over 58 years and at that price I never will. Another great vid.
thanks
I buy Scotts porage oats as I prefer them, I may give the cheaper ones a try though to save some money. I usually make my mine with ratio of 50g porage oats, 300ml half milk and water and zap in the microwave for 5 minutes ( I only use full fat milk). I like mine with a little cold milk over the top, so the porage spins in the bowl....add to that a chopped banana and a drizzle of honey. Since I'm the only one who eats porage in my house, it lasts me quite a while.
cheers James, have you tried overnight oats?

Hi could you do a review of Asda Chocolate fingers vs Cadburys
Growing up in the 70s we had readybrek as kids. I loved that advert central heating for kids, I know it’s ground instant oats but normal oats I always cook on the hob, with a pinch of salt while cooking then pour into a bowl sprinkle sugar and cold milk on top, we only had quakers and Scott’s back then.
readybrek...damn haven't had or even seen that brand in over 20 years. used to love that brand
Yes I remember the adverts an orange outline all around the kids 👍👍😁
My mum has porridge every morning and she puts honey in it
porridge with salt and honey slowly cooked with milk... i buy the aldi, cheap and good...
or if you want ready break put a load into a blender and chop up until fine... add milk cook and its ready in minutes.
Flahaven organic oats do it for me. But your testing at what cost?! Provides useful pointers at much flogged brands,
I have the asda porridge for breakfast most mornings it is spot on, i'm gunna try the aldi one because it's 70pence as well. Good channel.
Sounds great!
I love Lidl instant porridge pots and add a little golden syrup 😋👍. Thanks for another great video 👍
You're welcome
I have been having the golden syrup packets of porridge for years now. It's lovely but works out expensive, so I tried the Aldi 1kg bag like you. It's ok but it " has an effect " on my stomach if you know what I mean. I may give the Asda 1 a try on your recommendation though. Porridge fills me up until lunch I find 👍👍
Yes I like them too 😋😋😋
Scott's porridge every timei soak up the oats over night and cook Inthe morning yummy stuff .I've tried others but igo back to Scott's .
I would prefer you in a white coat and clipboard scientific Gareth. Love it save me money for me . Take care and cant wait for the next one.
Haha I'm afraid of getting taken away by men in white coats 🤣
Possible review suggestion - Iceland Cathedral City BBQ chicken toastie with gherkin.
Porridge oats are porridge oats at the end of the day so I ALWAYS buy a shops own bargain basement brand then add granulated sugar and golden syrup myself because it tastes JUST THE SAME as the 37g sachets but it's also SOOO much cheaper doing it yourself as well.
Absolutely 👌
