During gamma decay, an excited nucleus releases energy in the form of a gamma photon. Gamma radiation is high-energy electromagnetic radiation (light) which has a shorter wavelength and higher frequency than visible light. Gamma rays are ionizing radiation. The number of protons and neutrons in the parent nucleus does not change, so the identity of the daughter nucleus is the same as the parent, but in a lower energy state.
Khan Academy is a nonprofit organization with the mission of providing a free, world-class education for anyone, anywhere. We offer quizzes, questions, instructional videos, and articles on a range of academic subjects, including math, biology, chemistry, physics, history, economics, finance, grammar, preschool learning, and more. So when the elections in the circuit pass this np junction as they pass that junction that's when the photon is created? Are these photons a gamma radiation, but just not of a non ionizing quality

🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation:
00:00 🧠 *Introduction to Gamma Knife Radiosurgery*
    - Discusses how Gamma Knife Radiosurgery is used to treat tumors deep in the brain without damaging healthy tissues.
    - Emphasizes the role of radioactive gamma decay in this procedure.
    02:18 💡 *Energy Levels and Excitation *
    - Explains the concept of atomic electrons occupying different energy levels and the idea of "excited state".
    - Links this concept to LED glow, attributing it to electron transitions from higher to lower energy levels.
03:38 🌈 *Understanding the Electromagnetic Spectrum*
    - Highlights the role of different energy levels in defining the wavelength of electromagnetic waves.
    - Clarifies that gamma radiation is invisible to human eyes due to its very high energy levels.
04:48 🎇 *Proton and Neutron Transitions*
    - Draws a parallel between electron transitions and similar processes in protons and neutrons inside the nucleus.
    - Describes gamma decay as a process of releasing high-energy photons following such transitions.
06:12 🧪 *Example of Gamma Decay with Cobalt-60*
    - Breaks down the process of gamma decay using the example of Cobalt-60 turning into Nickel-60 through beta decay.
    - Highlights that in gamma decay, the proton or neutron number does not change, unlike in alpha or beta decay.
07:08 💥 *Comparing Alpha, Beta, and Gamma Radiations*
    - Compares the penetrating power, ionizing power, and radiative properties of alpha, beta, and gamma radiations.
    - Explains why gamma radiation, despite being the least ionizing, is used in radio surgeries due to its high penetration power.
09:55 🔪 *Gamma Knife Radiosurgery Demonstration*
    - Demonstrates the use of gamma knife radiosurgery, focusing multiple beams of low-intensity gamma radiation to destroy a targeted tumor while sparing healthy tissues.
    - Explains that the procedure's effectiveness relies on the concentration and intersection of low-intensity beams at a specific location.

So on the emission of the gamma ray does the nucleus lose mass?

    • @christinejackson6630
      @christinejackson6630 3 місяці тому

Yes. Mass and energy are related by E=mc^2. When a nucleus loses energy, its mass decreases. The change in nuclear mass during a gamma decay is small, but nonzero.
And E=mc^2 is actually a simplification of a larger equation which includes a momentum term. But that term is only significant for particles moving near or at the speed of light. A gamma photon for example-it has no mass but it has momentum and energy, and moves at the speed of light. So the momentum term is important for calculating its energy.
But for a nucleus at rest, the equation simplifies to E=mc^2.
