When I worked at one of the stores, I got calls about Xbox cards not working. We had a stack of 100 that we had to take out and the assistant managers had no idea why. I took them out early too because I got three calls in an hour and someone came back to Electronics.
This scam is a lot bigger than being reported. How is this even happening? How are these cards being placed back on the shelves un-noticed? Seems like a racket.
they knowingly left scammed gift cards in the aisles for people to buy. everyone was warned this would happen months ago, and it did. i have no idea why they even leave these cards within peoples reach to tamper with them in the first place.
How do the thieves know when the gift card has been activated? That's what I'm not understanding. How do they know when to drain the card of all funds. I also don't see gift cards being displayed behind the register. There's barely enough room for cigarettes, alcohol, and other tobacco products.
I seen on TV that when you load the funds they are sent something telling them that the funds are there it's because most of the card info are replaced(they cover the real Bar code with one of theirs)
The easiest way to do it is run a script that checks all the gift card numbers + pin for value, either through target website or possibly a third party service like a virtual wallet. I'm willing to bet you could get some cybersecurity involved and try to shut down anyone acting suspicious with multiple cards linked to one person across many platforms, but I'm guessing it doesn't bother them much, people are still buying the cards and throwing their money away
As much as it sucks, one solution is to maybe keep the gift cards locked up and/or behind the cash register, so customers have to ask for them instead of picking them out themselves like the simpler times. Have a booklet/tablet of all your gift cards so customers can browse through and request them. Makes it easier to know what gift card they want. Heck, make a counter specifically for gift cards and add a clerk there. Have the gift cards locked and a booklet or a tablet for customers to scan for the one they want. Just an idea. There are things the store can do. Employees not so much, but the people running and managing the store. They are the ones with the power to make a change, but they just aren't thinking. They aren't sitting and planning out possible solutions. Edited spelling.
@Gfysimpletons it's not fucking racist. Is locking things up that are explosive or to protect children from getting their hands on things that could harm them racist? So we cant afford to lose any money to target or anyone else. So please if there is a class action suit in washington state I would like to have the info. About it! Thank you.
All stores should lock all products up and customers hand in order and get the products and CARDs via the clerk with a proper locked protector for the clerk.
Costco has been using cardboards instead of the actual gift cards into the public area. What you do is that after you pay for the gift card you wanted on the cardboard you must show the receipt to security checkpoint and they will get the actual gift card to you.
Thats not how they do it first they buy and activate a real gift card add it to their online target wallet then the reseal it and put it back on the shelf because when you at the checkout lanes if you were to scan a loaded activated gift card during checkout before you press "pay" in most cases some give a notification that its already been activated or invalid to activate but other gift cards like target brand gift cards can be reloaded during the scanning process so they can appear to be new fresh gift cards so a guest will load the tampered gift card with funds they scammers will see that its been loaded then use mobile pay through their target app or wallet and either spend the money or buy something to return it so they can have the funds loaded onto a different gift card so if the victim files a claim the money is already gone
That doesn’t make sense. They were already purchased. The problem is that the fraudulent cards were sold by corporations as being legitimate. That’s on them to remedy and ensure no such large scale fraud happens again. This isn’t just some exclusive or unique situation with gift cards all the sudden. Counterfeit and fraud is something mankind has always and will always face in evolving ways. We still have people buying bibles and believing in a god/Christianity, exploitive capitalism/corporatism, consumerism and are swayed by generations of nonstop marketing, propaganda and emotional rhetoric surrounding brands/logos, sports ect…so we know the opportunity is already there to take advantage of people in other ways. Unfortunately, these things generally affect people/consumers more than corporations. It’s bullshit that one would make some assumptions that such ‘theft’ is burdensome on a corporation like Apple or target. Just sayin
The only way to stop it is for the cashier to physically put an activated number on the card when purchased, but that would required them to update their registers, which would cost money. I think they should do it to stay ahead of criminals.
Imagine tech support scammer asking for their victim to go buy gift card and they end up buying scam card so the scammer end up getting scammed as well. We went full circle now.
When They Purchase The Card Are They Purchasing It Because Someone Told Them Too? Do They Not Understand That They Cannot Pay A Bill With An iTunes Gift Card. Or Is This A New Scam.
The only reason Target customers would buy Gift cards or anything from Target is to get 5% off from the Circle Red cards. If the Gift cards are fake then Target should be held responsible for their lack of security.
This happened with visa gift cards my brother had purchased as well. Turns out the card value was used overseas months before he gave the cards out. Nothing anyone could do…
When gift cards are sold there should be some sort of lock verification key code that is generated when purchased. It should be a radomnized number that is discovered once purchased and printed on the receipt. And when entering the card number you also have to enter the lock key code which would be a 17 digit number printed on your receipt or emailed to your email. However if that was done alot of fraud would slow down!
Actually it's not the fault of apple or Target and they did warn you about the fake gift cards and what to look for is just some of the consumers just didn't get the memo or weren't listening
I would like to know how I get in the class action suit if there is one on the state of washington. I bought $250.00 worth of visa gift card to take with us on a trip. When I arrived in attempted to make a purchase with one and then the other. I was told by the merchant I was attempting to use them through that there was nothing one either of the gift card. So I tried in a couple of days and get the same response....so when my husband and i returned home I went back into the target stores where I purchased the cards and spoke with the manager. He advised me to contact the target customer service number. I did and they advised me to contact the visa cuustomer service no....i called them and they told me then cards had been activated. So I said, i'm sitting right outside of the target stores and so if I go. In there I will be able to purchase something and these cards will work right? Well, like a dumbbell I went shopping and gathered up approx. $89.00 WORTH OF MERCHANDISE...then I have the cards to the clerk and guess what? It was as before...nothing on the cards. I should of just walked out and left the stuff there on the counter...but not me, honest as I am , I played for the items and left! I immediatley got on the phone and called them right back. And if course no one answered the first time. I kept calling and finally a man answered the phone and told me that they were closed.....anyway the story goes in and on...finally I sent back forms they wanted me to fill out and I never heard a word from them! So I finally called my bank to put a stop payment on the cards transaction from target. My bank went ahead and have us the transaction amount back. However, it was pending their investigation. Well then bank called today and said there was nothing they could do. A the cards company said that they cards were activated. So I am out $250.00 for the cards and the tax and activation fees, that never happened! I really think that they have inside people that steal the money off the cards. Because I was able to check the activity on the visa cards for just a minute, and then they shut me out. And I printed that activity sheet out for the cards and the $250. Visa I purchased it approx. 6pm and according to the activity sheet it shows the money taken off the cards at 3:28am. At Target they same night that I purchased the cards. Now last time I know...Target isn't open for shopping at 3am in the morniing!? I believe that target has employees that that take the money off these cards right after purchase. And so nothing about it!

Target should be held responsible. I went to purchase a gift vard and i asjed employee if ut was safe. Her reply was, "You just have to wait and see." Wtf kind if answer is that, they dont care about their customers.
This is such an easy fix. Get rid of the scratch off pin code and replace it with a code linked to your cell phone. When you purchase the card, they text the pin code to the cell number you give them. Easy
They are not knowingly selling fake gift card even the people who are selling the gift cards can't tell the real from the fake they don't care how they get their money back as long as they get them back Unfortunately they have no legal leg to stand on get their money back

Why is Target not responsible, since they are selling them?
I just got defrauded at a target today.😡🤬 I always stick up for myself thus it escalated.
@@jessehoffman2726
The new card seem to have a foil seal.
I guess I’m going to find out if they’re fake or not
The leadership of target needs to be fired! This is idiotic. The store takes the responsibility to assure what they sell isnt fraudulent. Put the cards behind a counter...and reimburse your customers for YOUR failure to protect them from security threats. weak leadership of target... just wrong
This literally happened to me this year!! Once with a $100 one and another with two $15 ones! It was so upsetting. From California
This happened to me. A google search led me to this video. I’m glad I’m not the only one and I hope Apple can correct this
Target should just give the customer back their money. It shouldn't be on the guest to be out their money
I currently represent the North Carolina Subclass of this class action suit. Target knowingly sells these fake gift cards and has done so for years.
I suspect that these are either being switched at the distribution center or at the store by an employee or a shopper/scammer
I’m victim too. Bought 8 gift cards and 6 of them are fake. How to join the lawsuit you know ? Thanks
When I worked at one of the stores, I got calls about Xbox cards not working. We had a stack of 100 that we had to take out and the assistant managers had no idea why. I took them out early too because I got three calls in an hour and someone came back to Electronics.
If you did you wouldnt be commenting here
No, target doesn't knowingly sell these cards. Scammers come in, put up fake cards, and wait for someone to buy them.
I usually get gift cards. Haven't done my usual gift card shopping yet.
Not going to now.
Cash will do just as well. 😉
people---- please get a job and work for the things that you want. STOP STEALING FROM WORKING PEOPLE. !!!
Absolutely!
Ask the dishonest employees. 🤔
What? Lock stuff up? That’s rayciss!
@Gfysimpletons it's not fucking racist. Is locking things up that are explosive or to protect children from getting their hands on things that could harm them racist? What the hell is wrong with people these days? Everything is racist to people like you! If you lock up your guns is that racist? You lock your car up - is that racist? Think before you call something racist please!
I don't know that they have done it for years, but I know they did it to us...a couple that are on social security and my husband is disabled because he has terminal cancer. So we cant afford to lose any money to target or anyone else. So please if there is a class action suit in washington state I would like to have the info. About it! Thank you.
All stores should lock all products up and customers hand in order and get the products and CARDs via the clerk with a proper locked protector for the clerk.
The first time this happened at Costco then target I will never trust target again.
Easy fix, stop buying gift cards.
Just sayin
My gift card has $0 balance. **I HAVE NOT USED IT AT ALL!!**
I dont understand why everyone buys a gift card. Just get $100 cash and they can do what they want with it.
The only way to stop it is for the cashier to physically put an activated number on the card when purchased, but that would required them to update their registers, which would cost money. I think they should do it to stay ahead of criminals.
If companies pay retailers to sell other gift cards they should be kept behind cards
Imagine tech support scammer asking for their victim to go buy gift card and they end up buying scam card so the scammer end up getting scammed as well.
We went full circle now.
Walmart needs a class a lawsuit for this also.
Vending machines or behind Customer Service counter sound like a winner.
Email the giftcards. Don’t even mess with physical ones.
I don't buy gift cards 😊
Don't by gift cards and be careful using ATM Machines. These are dangerous too.
And as usual, all of the costs involved will be passed on to the paying customers.
They need to put the gift cards behind the service desk
If you're shopping at Target, you've already been scammed.
I’m waiting for them to get smart enough and file that same lawsuit on the government over taxes
No one asking why this guys bought $800 in Apple cards instead of just giving Apple the $800 directly?
The poroblem is this is a lawless country.
Funny how Target cannot track the person who used it when everything is trackable.
There should be a safe place to order gift cards where no one will scam you.
Katie out there showing off those fly nails for this story. 💅
This happened with visa gift cards my brother had purchased as well. Turns out the card value was used overseas months before he gave the cards out. Nothing anyone could do…
Those cards should be locked !
Stores are now scamming people
When gift cards are sold there should be some sort of lock verification key code that is generated when purchased. It should be a radomnized number that is discovered once purchased and printed on the receipt. And when entering the card number you also have to enter the lock key code which would be a 17 digit number printed on your receipt or emailed to your email. However if that was done alot of fraud would slow down!
Another good reason not to shop at Target.
Actually it's not the fault of apple or Target and they did warn you about the fake gift cards and what to look for is just some of the consumers just didn't get the memo or weren't listening
It's not targets fault
Why do people suck?
Actually they're not trying to scam anybody especially over something as Tiny as a 25.00
LOL not much they can do about it? maybe secure fund cards the same way you secure your cash drawer.
Funny, it has never happened to me!
I mean they were already buying into a scam
I also believe there are bad actors inside of Targets organization behind this fraud.
They literally explain how the fraud is done in the video.
I worked there, and your absolutely right its an inside job. Theres no other way for this to happen.
You can buy stuff at three in the morning from target online.
Or possibly from a different state in person
Like I stated before. This is an inside job. These criminals were hired during Covid 19 lockdown. They are young criminals. I only use case when dealing with them because their boy friends are offender's. I am sure that they encourage these young girls to do these terrible things.
Who buys $800 in gift cards to buy yourself a phone?
And these are not "fake" gift cards, they are real, controlled by a thief.
If Target was really knowingly selling fake gift cards they would do all the cars not just one or two here and there
Stop Buying Gift Cards! As an aside….Black nail polish is gross
It is going on every day I purchased a 100 dollar apple gift card from CVS that had been used and lost my money in a store in South Carolina
Target received money for a fake card, they are liable. End of story!
How Pathetic. Should have filed a class action Lawsuit against Target for Letting Men use the Women’s Restroom Room. MASS BOYCOTT Target. Pure Media Scum.
Just stop buying gift cards…..
Never buy gift cards just give your friends and family cash because you lose money with the activation fees.
Target has done the same thing with other gift cards such as prepaid phone cards where do you pay for it it says it's activated and it doesn't go through Target says talk to the phone company phone company says talk to Target
Why to target? They’re not the criminals. Oh, I know why. Because they have money, and they are accessible to some lowlife attorneys.
Good
Target should be held responsible. I went to purchase a gift vard and i asjed employee if ut was safe. Her reply was, "You just have to wait and see." Wtf kind if answer is that, they dont care about their customers.
gift cards are a terrible idea for lazy people who don't want to get a gift or give cash they are a pain in the but for people getting them.
The only reason target is being sued, is because some parasite lawyers recognize an opportunity to soak the company.
This is such an easy fix. Get rid of the scratch off pin code and replace it with a code linked to your cell phone. When you purchase the card, they text the pin code to the cell number you give them. Easy
They are not knowingly selling fake gift card even the people who are selling the gift cards can't tell the real from the fake they don't care how they get their money back as long as they get them back Unfortunately they have no legal leg to stand on get their money back
AND People TRUST credit, cards, with their life’s savings? Real greenbacks, put them in your wallet or purse, you know how much money you have.
And when you get mugged? I don't buy gift cards and for sure I don't walk around with cash.
Fake gift card scam? The scam is fake?
Well, pretty much shop at Target and you get what you deserve. At least you won't be able to buy tuck friendly swimsuits for your kids.
Target is the new Wally World
Who the fudge is buying iTunes gift cards??? Like get with the times and start streaming lol
Thats why Taget is going under! They have played a large part in wokeness!
I didn’t know target was going under. I didn’t know that gift card scams were woke.
Maybe you should wake up

Target ain't going nowhere lol they will be around for a long time even if we just cut stores we still going to be Rocking 🎉
Honestly, these companies can care less about the individuals who aren’t aware of their local surroundings. There’s only so much these companies can do, every single time when things like this happens, the ease and way of life just gets disrupted by iron bars and barricades on that one thing we always need at the store that’s behind glass or acrylic panes.
Hearing about the gift card scams this past Christmas made it extremely hard for me. Often times in the past I would suggest getting people gift cards for a quick and easy solution gift idea. This is why I shoplift on a regular. Target is Stealing money and saying oh well. Well FU too gonna shoplift twice as much from target
If u get a fake card from inside of target then the EMPLOYEE IS THE THEIF
You know, speaking personally, its why I NEVER use gift cards. If you have the money to get something, just pay for it.
That said, being a former target employee, and as much as I dont want to, Im going to defend target on this one.
Even though its true, its a dumb idea to keep them out in the open, realistically theres not much the company can do.
Even if they did see someone tampering with the cards they legally cant confront them. Ultimitely their best bet would be stop selling gift cards entirely.
That said, thats why cashiers are so hesitant on doing huge gift card transactions.
That’s pretty genius. Good job scammers.
